Briggs & Forrester to make significant carbon saving by switching to Green Fleet provider

Briggs & Forrester are proud

The Group will be making an initial saving of 1,702 tonnes of carbon per annum, which will improve year on year as the existing fleet is converted to electric, plug-in hybrid and traditional hybrid vehicles. Morgan Sindall awarded A grade for action on climate change

Morgan Sindall Group plc has

been awarded an A Grade by CDP, formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project, in recognition of its actions to tackle climate change. The Group is the only major UKbased contractor to achieve the grade in 2020 for its climate change initiatives. The ranking acknowledges the company’s continued efforts to meet its environmental targets and make its businesses more sustainable. CDP is an independent and voluntary carbon reporting scheme which assesses how companies cut emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop low-carbon alternatives. Of some 5,800 companies to take part this year, only 270 worldwide made the A list. ‘Bute’ and ‘Iona’ sail effortlessly into Junk It’s 100% Isuzu fleet

In just four years since they acquired their first ever Isuzu, Scottish house clearing company ‘Junk It’ is now 100% Isuzu with its fleet of collection vehicles. During 2020, Junk It has added two further new Isuzu Grafter 3.5 tonne rigids, with a third Grafter scheduled for delivery later this month.

When they join the Junk It collection fleet, each Isuzu truck is given its own individual name that is taken from the Western Isles of Scotland, with the latest two Grafters being christened ‘Bute’ and ‘Iona’ respectively. Commenting on the arrival of the new Isuzu Grafters, David Malcolm from Junk It said, “Part of our company strategy from day one has been to present a clean and professional image to our customers at all times, setting us apart as a business. We feel that the Isuzu Grafter trucks are a professional mobile advertisement for our business and by having them individually named, we find that even the customers now refer to the trucks by their Island name.” All the Isuzu Grafter N35.125 collection trucks at Junk It have been supplied by local Isuzu truck dealer

HHIC ‘welcomes with caution’ ambitious CCC report

Council, HHIC, are pleased to see the Climate Change Committee, CCC outline the ambition for Heat Pumps and Hydrogen for heat whilst recognising the changes needed to decarbonise. Stewart Clements, Director, HHIC said; “We welcome the CCC’s ambition to have 5.5 million Heat Pumps installed by 2030 and also the recognition of hydrogen and the real potential it offers to decarbonise heat, affordably.”

“However, we must proceed with caution. Having ambition is positive but we have to be prepared for what happens if we can’t meet that ambition. The accelerated timelines will be very difficult to achieve in practice. BEIS need to urgently engage with the heating industry to fully understand what we can start to deliver, and what we will need to put into place.”

“For example more work is going to be needed on reskilling the workforce and developing supply chains. Red tape will need to be reduced to allow greater participation in government support schemes like the RHI and Green Homes Grant.” “If a collaborative approach is adopted the heating industry is confident it can reduce emissions to meet our net zero goals.”

CCC recognise benefit of Hydrogen but need to go further

Alliance, EUA, welcomes the recommendations in the Climate Change Committee’s, CCC, 6th Carbon Budget, in particular the move to mandate hydrogen ready boilers in 2025 as it recognises the longer-term benefit of hydrogen in decarbonising heating. However, they need to match the pace of innovation and start listening to industry and consumers. The world is waking up to the potential of a hydrogen future, but it seems the CCC is wedded to the past in some of its analysis and recommendations. We should be leading the world not waiting for our official advisors to play catch up. Mike Foster, CEO, EUA said; “We all know that decarbonising heat is tricky, but necessary if we are to meet our climate change obligations, and low carbon gases such as hydrogen have a critical role to play in the process.

JMS Engineers give insight into the importance of MMC

JMS have been ahead of the

game in construction methods, using MMC since 2003. We speak to Andy Kenyon, Midlands Director of engineering consultancy JMS, who gives further insight offsite construction: What is Modern Methods of Construction? Offsite manufacture and modern methods of construction (MMC) can be defined as the design, planning, manufacture and pre-assembly of construction elements or components in a factory environment, prior to installation on site at their intended, final location. It brings multiple benefits to the housebuilding sector, as they can be constructed 50% quicker than using traditional methods, which keeps costs lower, timescales shorter and facilitates a faster return on investment. A growing proportion of JMS projects are now using or considering this affordable and sustainable option. Plus, the government’s plan to deliver an additional 300,000 homes by 2022, means offsite manufacturing is fast becoming a mainstream method of construction. What opportunities do you see within the MMC industry? MMC allows for remarkable levels of accuracy and precision, meaning developments can be delivered with minimal defects or flaws. This is especially important given the current shortage of affordable housing. MMC requires far less time on site, which leads to reduced expenditure and improved delivery timescales. For a large, national homebuilder, it provides significant advantages and poses a solution to many of the challenges facing the building industry. What do you perceive to be the biggest disadvantages to offsite construction? The unique nature of every construction project and the different approaches used by each developer

or manufacturer, mean that specific disadvantages are difficult to assess. However, traditional property developers are concerned changes in plans are not always possible once the project starts, so customisation becomes limited. Plus, the lack of expert knowledge in the industry is one of the main barriers preventing MMC to be quickly adopted.

business as normal with the threat of tariffs and quotas avoided thanks to the trading agreement struck with the EU last month. Trade bodies across the industry are pleased continuity in costs and availability of products and materials is now in place. Construction Leadership Council’s Brexit working group chair James Butcher said: “The mutual cooperation in respect of reducing technical trade barriers and cooperation at the border will also undoubtedly help to avoid some of the risks of delay and disruption. “What this means is that we will not see the inflationary shock of tariff and quota introductions or the expected currency depreciation associated with a no-deal. This deal delivers certainty at a time when it is needed most and represents a good day for British construction.” The agreement secures a continuation of rules of origin where

Schöck Combar improves sonar test tank performance

Schöck Combar glass fibre reinforcement is fast becoming

the preferred choice over traditional steel rebar for a variety of new projects in unusual and demanding environments. Combar (composite rebar) is a ribbed reinforcing bar made of corrosion resistant glass fibres that are bound by a vinyl ester resin. The high quality components and the unique manufacturing process result in an outstanding material. One of the latest applications is for a sonar test tank facility for assessing detection apparatus performance. There were two main considerations in the selection process. Primarily Combar was chosen for its nonmagnetic properties, as the product offers no risk of any electromagnetic interference with the test results. Hydroacoustic devices are measured over a range of frequencies and tests are highly diverse, ranging from the acoustic characteristics of a transducer, to the reflective characteristics of acoustic materials. So electromagnetic sensitivity is a critical issue and normal steel rebar would interfere with the results due to its magnetic properties – and even stainless steel would also compromise the test results. The secondary issue involved the ability to overcome loading issues within the structure itself. The tensile strength of Schöck Combar is far better than that of reinforcing steel and there is also the ability to design the product to different shaped bar types. The ‘Z’ bar within the wall structure on this project is a very unusual bar shape and also radiused. A special two-part manufacturing process It is the two-part manufacturing process that enables the ribbed GRP bars to meet the reinforcement requirements. First, in the pultrusion process, densely bundled highstrength glass fibres are pulled through a closed chamber and impregnated with a synthetic resin. The parallel alignment of the fibres results in optimum strength of the material. The ribs are then cut into hardened bars and given a final coating. As the vinyl ester resin is diffusion tight and every glass fibre is embedded in resin, the result is a durability of up to 100 years in concrete. Exceptional versatility Schöck Combar application examples include taking advantage of its easy machinability in tunnel construction, whereby boring machines used in shaft walls of tunnels, cannot drill through steel reinforced walls. With Combar the machine can cut directly through the head wall. In high voltage transformers and power plant reactors, inductive currents are generated within the reinforcing steel. The heat will affect the rebar strength if too close to the coils, but Combar remains unaffected. And its corrosion resistance – even from salt – is unrivalled when building bridge, marine and harbour constructions. Development progresses on £45m North East Lincolnshire site

Work is underway on one of North

East Lincolnshire’s largest residential sites with developer E5 Living UK enlisting the help of Greater Grimsby MP Lia Nici to launch the project. The first phase of King’s Park in Scartho will see 78 bungalows built by constructor JemBuild, which secured the contract with E5 thanks in part to its commitment of using local labour and suppliers. E5 Director Kevin Stevens was on site last week with JemBuild managing director Paul Barker as Lia Nici MP unveiled the names of the roads on the new village-style community, located next to Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales hospital. The roads – Williams Way and Harrys Drive - that run off the newly named King’s Park Road have been named in tribute to the princess’s sons. A retail centre including a convenience store will serve the new neighbourhood. The homes are part of a wider £45m scheme with outline planning permission for apartments for the over-55s and ‘step down’ and social care unit to support patients leaving hospital but who require

on-going nursing care before returning home. E5 Director Kevin Stevens said: “It’s been a difficult year with Covid and restrictions and the builders have had to cope with a lot. We’ve had supplier issues like everybody throughout the UK but progress is happening and so far it’s going very well. We are on target to deliver everything within two years so we have some challenges but so far, so good.” Paul Barker added: “We’re currently working on five sites across the region but King’s Park is our largest project. It’s a great scheme for local businesses securing an initial two years of work which is rare in the construction industry and ultimately will offer huge benefit to the local community. “We have experienced significant supply chain issues with shortages in blocks, plaster and timber with potential shortages in insulation but good procurement has avoided delays to the project with the industry shortages. Fortunately, the 500,000 bricks for the whole development were purchased at project commencement in March 2020 so at least we won’t run out of bricks!”

King’s Park was designed by Cleethorpes-based Hodson Architects, is being built by Humberston firm JemBuild and marketed by Crofts Estate Agents, which has offices in Cleethorpes, Immingham and Louth. Lia, who viewed the show home and met the developers, architects and builders delivering the scheme during a socially distanced tour on December 11, said: “This new development has some really thoughtful planning and house design, which helps to keep a village feel to the area. It nicely compliments the surrounding village and area’s architecture around Scartho. “The two new road names also reflect the site’s history, connecting with Diana, Princess of Wale’s sons Princes William and Harry, which is a nice touch.”

Supermarket sweep for Stepnell as it completes new Aldi store

Construction firm Stepnell has

delivered a new £2.2 million scheme for global, budget supermarket chain Aldi in the East Midlands. The new 1,315 sq. metre retail store, located in Edwalton, Nottingham, is the second Aldi store that Stepnell has delivered in five years – with the first store opening in Kettering in 2015. The brand-new store, which opened its doors to the public earlier this month, was completed in under a year and features a modern interior with a concrete slab floor, concrete block internal walls, curtain walling and an entrance canopy, as well as a new entrance road, car park and external landscaping works. Designed by national architects The Harris Partnership, the single storey supermarket also comprises of a steel frame, insulated cladding and roof insulated cladding.

Works begin on pivotal build of West Midlands SEND school

has been selected by the Department for Education (DfE) to design and build a brand-new facility for the modernisation of Oscott Manor School in Birmingham, as part of the DfE’s Priority School Building Programme. Oscott Manor School, located in Old Oscott Hill, Birmingham, is a SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disability) secondary school supporting pupils with autism. Rated ‘Good’ in the most recent Ofsted inspection, the school has outgrown its current building following an increase in the demand for places, and due to site constraints which has meant the current site is too small to develop. This has resulted in the relocation and the construction of a new school at nearby Reservoir Road in Erdington, Birmingham. Due for completion in winter 2021, the new educational facility will be a community school for 120 young people aged 11-19, with autism as their primary diagnosis. The school will provide educational, health and care plans for each student. Construction works will involve the

demolition of existing buildings at the 2.8 acre Reservoir Road site; the former Bridge SEND School, Fairfield Children’s Home and the Children’s Bungalow, followed by the construction of the new 29,923 sq. ft two-storey modern educational facility with a range of versatile teaching spaces for ICT, design and technology, science and music, as well as general staff facilities, external play areas and associated access roads. It will also include a multi-use games area (MUGA), a forest school with associated lighting and secure boundaries, staff parking and safe drop off and pick up areas for pupils. As you enter the site, the school is adjacent to the Elwood Day Centre which will remain open throughout the works, and G F Tomlinson has worked closely with the centre to ensure access will be maintained at all times and there is minimum disruption to service users. Network Rail is situated on the left and residential properties are located to the right and to the rear. This project will mark the 13th scheme delivered by G F Tomlinson

Stepnell hits major milestones on three southern school schemes

The £3.9 million development, which also includes a garage and external works such as paving, asphalt, fencing and top soiling, is due to be complete in June 2021. Rob continued: “Despite this project commencing on the first day of national lockdown back in March, we were able to maintain our build schedule and complete site work through the implementation of stringent health and safety precautions that - we believe - have been central to our recent successes.” Stepnell has also demonstrated its success in the educational sector with its latest project with The Woodroffe School, won through Dorset Council’s Smaller Capital Works Framework, that is also due to start on site in January 2021. The £2 million development will include a new, twostorey teaching block with classrooms and a group learning space, library resource centre and additional office


space to help expand the school’s academic offering. Landscape work will also be undertaken to include the creation of new footpaths in the surrounding areas, providing full accessible circulation to the ground floor and accompanying lifts for disabled users. The year-long scheme will pose a number of challenges, including the navigation of a live site and logistical difficulties - with the standalone new build cut into a hillside to accommodate for the elevated terrain.

hardware has recently been specified for a luxury hotel built within Shanghai’s new National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC) in China. Built in 2019, the Intercontinental Shanghai Hongqiao NECC features 536 rooms across 10 floors and is the only hotel to be located within the NECC. The hotel boasts many luxurious features including a fitness spa and wellness centre, a grand ballroom and a signature restaurant which offers an array of international cuisines. The design brief required a sliding door system for each of the 536 rooms to create a partition wall between the bathroom and bedroom. A range of P C Henderson’s sliding door hardware systems were specified for the project including 504 Husky Sliding systems for the standard guest bedrooms and 85 Husky Telescopic systems for the hotels executive rooms.

Family business SMART Balustrades specialises in the fitting and manufacturing of bespoke glass and stainless-steel balustrades, Juliet and platform balconies, and handrails for the commercial and residential sectors. Recently named as the third fastest growing balustrades company in the UK by Plimsoll, the company reported record months in July, August and November this year, with turnover up 20% from 2019. After making a number of key hires earlier this year, the firm is now nine strong, with further plans to expand its team in the new year, as it continues to invest in the manufacturing side of the business. Data suggests construction sector won’t meet government’s environmental targets

industry believes that the sector’s climate objectives are unachievable unless there is a major overhaul to how homes in the UK are built and refurbished, research has revealed. The government has set a number of environmental targets for the construction industry in order to meet its overall objective of reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050i. In a survey of over 200 construction industry professionals, 77% of respondents agreed that these environmental goals will not be achieved without significant changes in the approach to retrofitting existing homes and developing new homes. The research by Uponor, the total solutions provider of systems for the safe transportation of water around a building, is detailed in the whitepaper ‘High-Rise and Net-Zero Buildings of Tomorrow: Is the Construction Industry Ready?’ii. This research aligns with recent criticism by independent housing organisations, which believe that government policies do not sufficiently support sustainable building practises. This includes the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) iiii, which recently raised concerns about the government’s Planning White Paper and its ability to help reduce carbon emissions. Constructing sustainable and durable residential buildings

In a survey by Home Quality Mark,

over two thirds of respondents said sustainable features are important in a prospective property. For a home to be sustainable, it must have elements that lower environmental impact, but must also be built to last. Here, Nick Cowley, managing director at aluminium building product supplier, Endurawood, explores how to construct sustainable and durable new builds. Government research has found that the UK needs to build up to 345,000 new homes per year to fulfil demand. While new homes must be produced quickly and sustainably, housebuilders must not compromise quality. Therefore, property developers need to examine new build features that both lower the environmental impact of a home and increase its lifespan. Location The location of new builds can be as important for sustainability and durability as building methods and materials. With UK flooding becoming common in recent years, housing area drainage must be considered. Flooding can cause structural damage, electrical faults, mould and debris. To prevent flooding, property developers can incorporate specially landscaped natural drainage points, such as ponds and ditches, which minimise the risk of flooding while creating a varied wildlife habitat. Trees are another natural feature that reduce flooding by intercepting rainwater as it falls and evaporate it back into the atmosphere before it reaches the ground. Their roots help infiltrate water into the soil, reducing water runoff. This can also be reduced with permeable paving, such as pervious concrete and interlocking grass pavers. Energy Another consideration when constructing sustainable new builds is energy optimisation. Solar power is a renewable energy source that

Wildlife Trust unveils ambitious post-Covid wildscape to replace notoriously bleak shopping mall

Today sees the launch of a bold vision to rewild the heart of Nottingham and green-up the historic city centre following the decision to demolish the much-derided Broadmarsh shopping centre. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has worked with landscape architects to reimagine the imposing grey urban jungle and replace the concrete with 100% natural greenspace – the start of a big idea to reconnect the city to Sherwood Forest and invoke the spirit of Robin Hood – bringing wildlife to nature-poor city dwellers and the millions of visitors it attracts every year. Paul Wilkinson, CEO of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts says: “Transforming the Broadmarsh into a natural greenspace would bring people together and start putting the city’s nature into recovery at a time when natural greenspace has never been more valued or needed. Stora Enso invests EUR 80 million in wood handling at Imatra mills

Stora Enso has decided to invest

in centralising and modernising the wood handling capacity at its Imatra mills in Finland. The investment of EUR 80 million will enhance Stora Enso’s production capabilities for premium packaging board. The investment supports the Group’s strategy of sustainable profitable growth through packaging in strong customer segments. The investment is planned to start in Q1 2021 and to be completed in Q3 2022. The Imatra mills produce premium packaging boards for food, beverage and luxury packaging. The purpose of the investment is to modernise the wood handling process in Imatra and centralise it in one of the existing wood yards. The project includes the installation of a new, third debarking line, improvements to chip handling systems, and modifications to the existing wood yard infrastructure. The centralised and modernised wood handling capacity will improve

the stability and efficiency of the process. In addition, the new, more efficient debarking line will reduce water consumption of the process and lower the environmental impact.

Midlands landscape architect ends the year on a (green) high

Nottinghamshire and London-based landscape architect Influence is ending what has been a record year following a 50% increase in projects, compared to this time last year.

The practice recently hit the headlines with its bold and ambitious green vision for Nottingham’s now redundant Broadmarsh, on behalf of Nottingham Wildlife Trust. The plans showed a transformed and reimagined Nottingham city centre, with a proposed 100% greenspace in place of the shopping centre. Put forward to Nottingham City Council, the plans have attracted hundreds of comments from members of the public backing the scheme. Despite the challenging conditions of this year, the chartered landscape architect – which delivers landscape architecture, urban design, environment planning and expert witness services - has had a record 12 months in business and plans for further team expansion in the new year. This year, the company has worked on major developments across the country. In the midlands projects

include; Special Educational Needs schools in Lincolnshire, the county’s major flood defence scheme the university’s medical school. In Northamptonshire the team have worked on the recently designated High-Street Heritage Action Zones. The team are also delivering residential developments in Manchester and are the go-to practice for specialist tall building assessments in London - protecting the capital’s famous skyline. How will the furlough scheme effect my workers?

After what seems like a lifetime

ago when the UK was first put into lockdown, in March at the start of the pandemic, workers agreed with their employers to be temporarily furloughed with a view to return to work once the initial Covid-19 spike had passed. Fast forward around nine months later and the government has announced that the furlough scheme will AGAIN be extended and remain in place until the end of April 2021. The government will still be contributing 80% towards worker’s wages to offer some form of stability for business and employee as we head into the New Year. Fantastic news for some but are a percentage of workers developing a furlough fever? As the colder months set in - are some taking advantage of this system in order to put their feet up? This for many business owners will be the difference between keeping workers employed rather than widespread redundancies being made. Being furloughed for such a long period of time however is naturally going to have some negative side effects in regard to business in the long run. To put things into perspective those

who have been furloughed since March 2020 may still remain on furlough until the end of 2021 – meaning they will have taken over a year out of work and ‘Off the tools’. For the construction industry that heavily relies on people power along with being alert when working in hazardous environments, alert when operating plant or heavy machinery – this could lead to dangerous situation when they return. Many of whom are lucky enough to have gone on a long holiday abroad and not driving for 2/3 weeks will know that the drive home from the airport feels a little odd. Imagine not operating heavy machinery for 12/13 months and then hopping back driving seat… this could be an issue! For workers with many years of experience under their belt returning to work shouldn’t be an issue, however younger or less experienced workers within the trades may struggle to get back to a decent level of safe productivity. There will be some workers who will have benefited from this situation – being furloughed from one job and legally being able to work elsewhere which remarkably will leave those particular workers potentially with surplus income compared to

previous years of working. There have been reports from business owners around the UK that their workers are asking to be furloughed as they seem happy to stay at home and get paid to do so. With infection rates still climbing in some areas - should workers be looked down on or demonized for not wanting to return to work? Is this a mindset of ‘Better-Safe-ThanSorry’ or it is just abusing furlough scheme? Despite the government stating that trades can still continue to work despite tier restrictions there are different factors that business owners must consider before making judgement. Workers may share their homes with vulnerable people and arguably their only option is to isolate themselves from the rest of the public as much as possible to minimise risk of contamination. This leaves owners in a sticky situation as there will naturally be some workers who are happy to be furloughed and essentially get paid for doing nothing! With hundreds of thousands of jobs set to disappear if they have not already across the UK - the question has to be asked: where do business owners draw the line?

Spotlight on: Lisa Watson Design Consultant at UK Bathrooms

This month we’re chatting to Lisa

Watson, Design Consultant, 3D Design Services at UK Bathrooms. Lisa lives in the North Yorkshire countryside with her children, dogs, cats and horses. Any spare time she has is spent drawing, painting and horse riding. Q: How long have you been with UK Bathrooms and what is your role for the online bathroom store based in Ripon, North Yorkshire. A: I’ve been with UK Bathrooms for nearly 2 years initially in Product Marketing before beginning my current role as a Design Consultant for our 3D Design Service. I work with customers on a one to one basis, guiding and advising from the planning and layout of their new bathroom to bespoke product sourcing if needed. I use over 20 years of interior design experience and architectural drawing skills to develop a 3D visual of their brand new bathroom, without them having to leave their home. Q: How has your career path led you to this role? A: Throughout the last 20 years I have worked in Interior Architecture. I have experience with virtual software and this coupled with my design skills allows me to offer our customers a service which brings their new bathroom to life – before they purchase!

Q: What specific qualifications and experience do you have for your role? A: I graduated with a BA Hons in Interiors Architecture and have worked with architects, interior designers, bespoke manufacturers of kitchens and bathrooms and bespoke manufacturers of hardwood orangeries both in the UK and abroad. Q: How do you balance your career with your home life? A: My hours are flexible at UK Bathrooms and I have a peaceful art room at home which allows me time for myself when needed and gives an ideal environment to design and be creative. Q: What do you find most challenging at work? A: Ha-ha that’s really easy – time! The 3D Design Service at UK Bathrooms is a new service but a service that is already proving very popular! Q: What do you like most about working for UK Bathrooms? A: 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone. What I like best about my role at UK Bathrooms is that it is means I can continue to work with customers and continue to design new bathrooms which they love and

which they will enjoy for many years. All from the comfort of their own home. Q: Looking at ukbathrooms.com you have many brands, do you have favourites? A: Most definitely, though perhaps I shouldn’t divulge! Spa in West Jutland, Denmark refurbished with focus on aesthetics

Following a refurbishment, Hotel

Fjordgaarden in Ringkøbing now boasts an exclusive new spa that is already attracting visitors from near and far. Aesthetics were a top priority in this project which is reflected in the luxurious solutions chosen; these include the elegant linear drains, covered with custom-cut tiles that blend almost invisibly in with the flooring. West Jutland has a new attraction to tempt tourists. Situated next to the Ringkøbing Fjord is the Hotel Fjordgaarden; originally built in 1967, the hotel has undergone an expansion and total refurbishment and now includes a luxurious new spa. COVID-19 and travel restrictions may have slightly affected visitor numbers, but guests have still been flocking to Fjordgaarden, and the hotel recoreded its busiest summer ever. The majority of this success can be attributed to the spa, which opened in June and was officially inaugurated in August.

“With the refurbishment, we wanted to attract a new segment of customers to the hotel; the spa definitely helps with this. We want our guests to feel that Fjordgaarden is worth the journey, and we think they will when they see our new superelegant spa,” says Fjordgaarden’s manager Brian Madsen. Luxurious style – exclusive details According to Brian Madsen, every detail of the spa has been carefully considered. The style is well thoughtout, with large, rustic tiles, wood panelling as well as sand and lyme grass: “The refurbishment has a strong focus on aesthetics; from the outset this was the top priority throughout the hotel. We want visitors to experience sheer luxury and elegance; this is reflected both in the design and the materials used. We’re delighted to report we’ve already had a lot of positive feedback from the guests.”

The spa was fitted with linear drains from the design company Unidrain, which is renowned for its stylish, minimalistic products. The hotel chose Unidrain’s HighLine Custom drain, to suit the spa’s fashionable look. “Invisible” linear drains provide a stylish finish The solution provides a discreet drain, where the familiar grate is replaced by custom-cut tiles that match the surrounding floor: “We’re extremely pleased that our drains were chosen to help create the right experience in the spa. Our Highline Custom drain with the tile covering produces an elegant finish and a beautiful style. It’s barely noticeable, because it slopes so discreetly into the floor,” says Anders W. Christensen, Unidrain’s Area Sales Manager. The discreet drain has been installed around both the pools as well as in the sauna and shower areas. The lounge area is


also equipped with the stylish linear drains, which have been placed with great care: “Based on drawings of all the rooms, we made recommendations on the length and number of the drains. We also provided advice on their optimal location. The focus was on creating a result that merges form and function. We took water drainage into account to make sure the drains had the right capacity. In addition, we took care to create the right slope without cutting the tiles into pieces.
