HEALTHCARE, PHARMA

The pharmaceutical market in Turkey is set to rise from $5 billion in 2015 to $5.53 billion by 2020, representing a compound annual growth rate of 2%. Accor­ ding to IMS Health Report, Turkey is one of the top 20 “pharmerging” countries, having been ranked 19th in 2014, and expected to be ranked 17th in 2019. The Turkish market is expected to grow by 11-14 percent between 2015-2019.

Short summary of sectors

During 2009-2015, pharma sales grew by 27.8 percent and 43 multinational pharmaceutical companies entered the Turkish market, bringing the number of foreign entities in the market to 116. Pharma exports, which stood at USD 612 million in 2010, have grown by 53.4 percent over the past five years to reach USD 939 million in 2015. Turkish pharmaceuticals are now sold in 144 countries, which include member nations of the European Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), North Africa, and the Middle East Turkey has one of the largest and youngest labor pools in Europe, with more than 42 percent of the population aged between 24 and 54, and the strength of Turkey’s labor force is reflected in the pharmaceutical sector. In the 2011-2012 academic year, more than 41,000 students graduated from vocational training­ schools and universities in fields related to the pharmaceutical sector.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Turkey has discovered a new and very lucrative revenue stream – medical tourism – but still needs to put a high level of investment to position itself as a global player. Turkey has become one of the most popular medical tourism destinations. The number of healthcare tourists visiting Turkey reached 746,000 and the revenue they brought in reached $5.8 billion in 2015. A total of 60 percent of these tourists came from the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region; 20 percent from Central Asian republics and the remaining 20 per­ cent from Europe and other countries. The sector expects a 15 percent rise in the number of healthcare tourists this year. The public sector plans to build hospitals in 15 cities in 2017 – giving a total capacity of 25,000 beds. “Turkey aims to increase the hospital bed capacity to 28 per 10,000 in population by 2018, and to 30 by 2023, according to Turkey’s Minister of Health, Mehmet Muezzinoglu. The investment total of the envisioned PPP projects to be realized in Turkey’s healthcare sector is expected to hit USD 200 billion by 2023. Private providers have already identified Turkey as an attractive destination for medical tourists. International companies from Malaysia, Qatar and the USA already have a presence in Turkey and are also prepared to put further investment into the area. As a result of this, attractive new business op­ portunities are set to open up for Swiss companies.

BIOTECHNOLOGY

The term biotechnology first appeared in the programs of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) in 1982. Turkey has been researching and investing in biotechnology for almost four decades. Al­ though biotechnology has been highlighted as important in the Economic de­ velopment plan, the industry is still largely in the imitation phase of wes­ tern countries with little original research being conducted. Most life science companies in Turkey are generics companies, distributors and subsidiaries of big pharmaceutical, with biotechnology playing a very limited role Further­ more, related industries are mostly focused on cost saving rather than tech­ nology development, lowering the overall level of genuine innovation in the country. Innovation and startups are the most recent economic fads in Tur­ key, as in most of the world. To the Western eye, the reasons for this success can be devoted to ‘fast product development time’, ‘new generation services’, ‘fast growth rates’, etc. However, this is Turkey, which is perched on the gate of the Orient. There are different market dynamics in this part of the world. Competition prefers, as the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated by his last visit to Turkey, ‘know-who’, instead of know-how’. The majority of bio­ technology activity in Turkey is focused on agribio research and development. The main revenue generating companies in Turkey are large organizations producing and researching seed and animal feed technologies.
