Intro

Hello and welcome to our April edition.

First up an apology to Gareth at The Real Ale Corner, we missed them off the Pubs of Brampton article in our last edition, they are proud to be Chesterfield's oldest, and the UK's second oldest micropub, opening in 2009 on Chatsworth Road.

2009, was quite a year for S40 Local as this was the year we started up! This edition is our 14th anniversary, and what surprises me is how these things creep up on you; I've forgotten to do anything special!

S40 Local was launched in a year of recession and I was told by a business adviser that he'd give it six months, so I'm rather pleased to hit 14 years and 136 editions, I love proving people wrong. We've survived COVID, missing seven editions; but are now back at full steam after a couple of rough years.

I'm proud to have launched S41 Local working with Simon Paterson. This is an additional 6000 copies delivered north of my area, we work closely together, share many advertisers and editorial, and I'm really pleased to say that he's now in his fourth year and his publication is growing in popularity.

Unhampered was kicked off in 2019, a coming together of three like-minded businesses, Defeye Creative, S40 & S41 Local. This website (www.unhampered-chesterfield.co.uk) showcases many of Chesterfield's fab independent businesses and we have much more to bring you through this platform. All I can say is watch this space!

Last up a LARGE THANK YOU, to every one of the great independent businesses who have allowed me to reach 14 years by advertising with me, to Beccy for getting my invoices out, to all my delivery team, my suffering family, anyone who has ever contacted me to contribute, and finally to you the reader for taking note of what I do and responding, by calling an advertiser and mentioning S40 Local you're helping make sure I'm still here in 2037, another 14 years. Happy birthday me.

Paul.

Women United An exibition by Sue Dickins

Words & Images: Sue Dickins

Just thought I’d send you a few of my latest paintings that are ready for my second solo exhibition, Women United. The opening evening is Sat 15th April so I'm working hard to be ready in time!

The idea to paint women from around the world wearing traditional dress came to me last year during my first exhibition. I found that I had developed a newfound interest in painting fabric with my models who had modelled for me for my first collection, and as I love figurative work I decided to combine the two.

I already had several friends from different parts of the world who now live here in the UK with us; they have all been extremely supportive and have modelled for me wearing traditional dress where possible. Ines who worked at West Studios for example was my French representative, modelling a wonderful bright red beret. I took photos of her on a bright sunny morning in Westwood. She is such a beautiful person inside and out, I just had to ask her if she would help with my idea, she was delighted! I also have a Polish friend, Marzenna, who modelled a vibrant Polish traditional shawl. I visited London recently to meet a wonderful lady from the Philippines. She was home for a short time last year and brought back some traditional dresses especially for this project.

During my first exhibition, 'This Woman’s Work', I met a young woman, Alex. We became good friends and I meet up with her quite often in The Hub at Chesterfield. She has been on a incredible journey after being desperately ill and inspires me so much.

I asked her if she would like to be part of this and she said yes. We had a lovely morning at Bolsover Castle, what better place than an English Heritage site and a proper English girl! As we entered the Star Chamber, I knew I’d found the perfect location as she gazed through one of the windows; she looked like a princess. The painting that I did of her is being used as my advert. I wanted to give her back some confidence which I’m delighted to say, it did.

I’m hoping this exhibition will again bring people together and hopefully be an exciting experience. All the new works are large, some a meter high, and are very bright and bold.

I read a quote saying 'we all look at the same stars, it’s how we see them that’s different', I’ve kept this thought in mind as I’ve met new friends from all over the world. Yes, we may be from different cultures and have different colour skin, but we are all human and should be treated equally.

I keep popping into see Joby at West Studios as he has also become a good friend and has continually offered his help and support! I’m doing a portrait of him as a Thank you!

Barre & Yoga... What's that then?

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Amy Gear

Fancy getting fit, increasing flexibility, and building strength? Amy Gear at Chesterfield Barre & Yoga might just be able to help. I popped in for a chat at her new (ish) studio at 622 Chatsworth Road (the studio space above Londis) and to learn a bit about Barre & Yoga.

"Barre is a fun, full body workout suitable for all levels of ability and no dance experience is required!

"We use light weights mixed with high repitations to get our muscle to absolute fatigue and experience the much loved Barre Burn.

"Barre is dynamic, empowering, strong and low impact, meaning it's great for the hips, shoulders and spine.

"We work at our own pace and rest when we need to, gone are the days of boring, rigid, perfectionist, inaccessible workouts.

"Our yoga classes consist of either Vinyasa Yoga or Yin Yoga, again both suitable for all levels of ability depending on what you want to achieve out of your class.

"Vinyasa Yoga is an active style of yoga that matches movement and breath together. You'll work into standing and seated poses to challenge your strength, flexibility, mobility and balance. You'll also work towards a calmer state of mind.

"Yin Yoga is more of a slower practice but it can still be very intense, you'll use your own body weight and props to experience longer holds (3 to 5 minutes) in an all floor based sequence, applying a gentle pressure to the target areas, usually the hips and spine. This pressure will increase over time, it is when this pressure is released that the healing qualities of yin are absorbed into the body, shifting stuck, stagnant energy and working into the joints, ligaments and tendons making them stronger.

"This is a really great body maintenance practice." Amy runs classes seven days a week, check out her online timetable for details. Right now, she is offering 3 classes for £15 which allows you to book sessions for three weeks running to give it a go.

"Don’t worry if you’ve never done yoga before, we don’t expect people to be amazing from day one but are here to help you progress, to tailor things to your abilities and long term to see results in your flexibility and strength.

"If you’re interested to see what we do, book a session, come along, and give it a try. We’ll make you welcome and I’m sure we’ll see you back again."

The Holme Hall Inn

A Community Hub!

Words: Simon Paterson

Images: Rachel Williamson

Rachel and Taylor are the entrepreneurial mother and daughter team behind the newly refurbished Holme Hall Inn.

Rachel, local teacher and mother of three, knows the power of community, the value of family and an opportunity when she sees one and Taylor, a Gen-Z with her finger on the pulse of cool and a progressive mindset, make the perfect team to transform the Holme Hall Inn into a thriving community hub for people from all walks of life!

Rachel and Taylor embarked on this adventure with their partners Russ and Isaac. Russ grew up in Holmehall and knows many of the locals; his charm and friendly banter keeps everyone entertained.

I caught up with Rachel and Taylor to discuss what the future holds for The Holme Hall and what it’s like to work with your mum!

When the Holme Hall Inn was up for grabs, what made you want to take it on?

"I just wanted Taylor to move out and this was an opportunity... I’m joking Taylor! Taylor and I have worked in hospitality for a while for Jason at Spire Inns. Taylor felt she wasn’t fulfilling her potential in the supermarket she worked at, and I thought this was a great chance for her to step out of her comfort zone and be professionally challenged. Being a teacher, I know all about that," smiles Rachel.

"For me, it's great to be able to live independently (Taylor lives upstairs with her partner, Isaac) as a young person the cost of running your own home at the minute is almost impossible. Living and working at the Holme Hall has enabled me to move out and broaden my skillset! Plus, we used to live around here so it’s great to come back."

Immediately, it’s clear to see how strong the mother and daughter bond is between Rachel and Taylor, but I was keen to find out what’s it’s like working with your mum.

"Working together has been difficult at times. Taylor is great with the customers, chatty, outgoing and approachable. Cleaning the toilets on the other hand, not a big fan, but she does it," grins Rachel.

"Nobody likes cleaning toilets Mother. I love talking with locals. We have a few who come in on their own and they all have a story tell. I am just happy to listen," says Taylor.

Since taking on the Holme Hall Inn the team has already established a strong community, based on family values and fun events for all. We have been to several events at the pub including the Christmas Market, Santa's Grotto and we saw a great live band on a Saturday night.

"Christmas was an opportunity for us to show the community what we were capable of and establish ourselves as not only a family pub, but a community hub as well," says Rachel with pride.

"We all loved Octoberfest, Mum and I had previously worked at a German bar, so we know the history and tradition of the festival. We got some great live acts on including an Oom-pah Band and it was so much fun," grins Taylor.

"Brunch and Bingo launches soon on the last Friday of the month, I’m looking forward to that one," says Rachel.

Another new feature of the pub is food which is receiving some great reviews. I can personally recommend the Sunday dinners but be sure to book early because they have been selling out fast!

The future is bright at The Holme Hall Inn with plans in place to hold a small community festival this summer to raise money for local mental health charities. I wish Rachel, Taylor and the whole team the best of luck and I look forward to sporting my lederhosen later this year! Mine's a pint of mild.

Rescue Dogs From Cape Verde to Chesterfield

Words: Jess Draper

Images: Jess & Adobe Stock

Jess Draper joined the team at S40 Local for a few days on work experience recently and one of the jobs we gave her was to put an article together about something she enjoys. What follows is a rather unusual holiday activity!

Last August, for our summer holiday

I was lucky enough to go to the beautiful island of Sal in Cape Verde. Something peculiar about this island is that unlike Cyprus, which is filled with stray cats, Sal is filled with semi-

wild dogs. Being someone who believes that there is only one correct answer to “Are you a dog person or a cat person?” this delighted me. No matter where you went on the island there was at least one dog either roaming down the street, or asleep under a sunbed.

Page 20 www.chesterfieldlocal.com Animals

Whilst there I didn’t meet a vicious dog, although many were cautious of humans, all the dogs I met, although wild, were friendly and merely longing for love. Not only did seeing these dogs help with the extreme longing I felt for my two fur babies at home, Ted and Poppy, but it also, in a way, made my holiday, being able to see a dog no matter where I went!

Although this island does sound like heaven for many dog lovers (like me), due to the impoverished nature of the country of Cape Verde, many of these dogs are malnourished and/or require veterinary care, this breaks my heart. Therefore, my mum and I decided to try to help. So, for one day of our holiday, we decided to venture away from the buffet, swap our bikinis for actual clothes and go and help at Organização Salense Proteção Animais (OSPA). OSPA is a non-profit organisation in Sal that gives shelter, food, warmth, and play for many of the stray dogs in Cape Verde. The charity’s aim is to find forever homes for their dogs, with families who have the capability to properly home and take care of one of these dogs.

When we arrived, we met the dogs, all of them eager to be cuddled and fussed. After making sure we spoke to every single dog we took two Rosie and Oito, out for a walk. Rosie and Oito are two black and white sisters that had been found by the charity as puppies, in a box that had been abandoned in the centre of Sal. They were extremely excited to be given the luxury of a quick walk (that many of our pet dogs at home receive daily). They ran and played, like it was the best day of their lives, jumping up for hugs and strokes along the way. You wouldn’t believe that these dogs were once abandoned puppies, considering how tame and friendly they both were. After 45 minutes or so, we were reluctant to take them back to their home, I believe we would’ve rather had them stay with us in our hotel room, or better, to have bought them back home with us. But reluctantly, we took them back to the rest of their friends.

That day of helping was one for the best days of my holiday. I loved helping those wonderful dogs who should never have been

on the streets, even if it was only a small part I played. I also simply loved visiting the shelter, they work to do as much as they can, helping as many street dogs as possible. Without this shelter, it is heartbreaking to think that so many more innocent dogs would be injured and fighting for food to survive. I just want to mention my great gratitude for OSPA for helping.

If you're inspired to get involved or adopt a rescue animal locally there are a number of organisations who can help, see below.

Rediscover Chesterfield

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Unhampered-Chesterfield

Chesterfield is being recognised as a destination for independence... a place to visit for it's independent businesses.

Our high street, Chatsworth Road and Sheffield Road, are doing well, with new and exciting ventures popping up all the time. Despite the odd negative comment on social media, Chesterfield remains a positive place with lots to offer its residents and visitors.

Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk is the place to go to find over 200 independent businesses based in and around Chesterfield, that are delivering excellence and experiences that keep people coming back, time and time again.

When I was younger, our weekends were filled just doing everyday tasks, shopping, visiting the bank, sorting out your insurance, and you only had the one day, everywhere was closed on Sunday... Today we have the internet, we can now spend every night doing tasks online, when I was a teenager it didn't exist!

We talk about the web being quicker and more convenient, am I the only one that feels this has been mis-sold?

If it's all so quick and convenient why does it seem to take over my life, and sorting out a problem that occurs can soak up whole days! I find the online experience a bit soulless, not to mention

the carbon footprint of all the individual deliveries being driven around, personally it all feels a bit wrong!

I'm not a complete evangelist, I order stuff from the web but I try and reserve it for things I can't get locally or over the counter, I try not to use it for everyday stuff. I like the opportunity to browse, to try things on, to talk to knowledgeable people who can help, not some AI generated BOT at the bottom of my screen.

I like to walk away with what I want there and then, ideally purchased from an independent business, do my bit to support the local economy. I'm not the world's best shopper, if I'm out browsing, I'm looking for something in particular, or coffee and food!

Chesterfield has a fab range of independent businesses, find yourself some time, pop into town and give them some support... the more we do this, the more it will encourage new businesses to open up.

Be sure to take a browse of the Unhampered website (www.unhampered-chesterfield.co.uk) before you go to help plan out your day and find something new..

But most of all, enjoy, and keep supporting the town in which you live.

Something special

There is something special about giving a book as a gift - it’s the sense of giving an object that will hold its emotional value, that you chose it specifically. Some people write in their books, others don’t and won’t. But, of old books the ones we often like and appreciate the most are those with inscriptions in them.

A lady came past the shop the other day and handed me a small pamphlet of a book - a collection of English poems. It’s an old schoolbook, the type used in Victorian schoolrooms to teach and learn poetry - specifically English poetry. The book has virtually no value but is quaint and nice to the touch and it sits warmly in your hand.

As she handed it to me I opened it and saw the inscription - the name of the previous owner and the date 1886. As I paused to appreciate the attractive ink handwriting - the lady said - “I knew her” - pointing at the name - “she was lovely, and I didn’t want the book to end up in a skip”.

Here was I holding a book that spanned almost 140 years of two women who knew each other and between whom this book had passed - the least I could do was respect that. I promised the lady it would not go in a skip and have put it to one side. For me, interactions such as this is what a secondhand book shop is all about. There are few books that have to go in a skip - and we pride ourselves on repurposing. Old redundant atlases are now made into map bags, we have wall-papered part of our own house with a broken copy of Lord of the Rings, and we have a scheme to make postcards and book marks out of broken books.

And of course, you can buy these books and more and give them second and third lives. The covers may not be perfect, the condition may not be immaculate - but the collected story and journey that those books have themselves had, gives us joy and wonder.

If you love books, have a friend whom you haven’t seen for a while, want a gift that is unlikely, fun and even a bit different - we can help. We are the ultimate shop for all-year-round secret-Santa’s. Please don’t leave it to Christmas - we need your help and support all year around to make this business venture work, so call in any time.

We are open on Chesterfield’s Market DaysMonday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays broadly 9am-4pm. Please do find time to come and browse.

And as for that poetry book - we are pleased to say that poetry is probably our biggest line of sale. Your love and exploration of the craft and curated word is huge. And we ourselves are huge advocates of John Clare, John Donne and Carol Ann Duffy to name but three. We are huge fans of local poet Helen Mort and hope to have exciting news for the town about that soon.

So that little poetry book is going into a lucky draw - if you like poetry or old previously loved books - pop into the shop - place your name and phone number into our March draw and one of you will win the poetry book with our compliments. Our one request is that you love it and keep it out of the skip for someone else to enjoy.

See you soon, Ed Fordham, Proprietor.

nspirations Theatre Company was founded in 1999 under the direction of Dorothy Clarke and was originally based in Bolsover. Next year they are looking forward to celebrating 25 years of “Inspiring Future Stars” after struggling through everything that the COVID pandemic could throw at a small community based group. I caught up with the smiling, friendly, whirlwind that is Joshua Mason, the now Owner and Creative Director, to see how things are going ahead of their silver anniversary and what they have planned for 2023.

Joshua joined Inspirations as a performer in 2001 before taking over in 2016, "Dorothy really wanted to create a group that offered opportunities for young people to produce high-end, musical shows at professional venues," explains Joshua.

“Some of our first shows were ‘Return To the Forbidden Planet’ and ‘Fame’ before we moved on to monumental productions like ‘Les Miserablés’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ earning sold out audiences and best production awards from the National Operatics and Dramatics Association. The group also enjoyed performances at The Palladium in London and for Her Majesty The Queen at Derby’s Pride Park.”

"Today however we’ve made the break back into the small time!” laughs Joshua. “We’re now focussed on being a community group, and want anyone interested in performance to get involved - regardless of experience or ability. We pride ourselves on our inclusivity and family-feel with new members being accepted all year round.”

"Anyone is welcome to attend a free taster session to see what Inspirations is all about. Our venues may have become smaller, but this has opened up unique performance opportunities around the county from stages in theatres and fields to galas, and festivals.”

Joshua was keen to point out that Inspirations encompasses all types of performance; they have accompanied brass and silver bands, performed at charity events, helped with music videos for local musicians and even sung at weddings. "We like to think outside the box," says Joshua, "last May we were involved in a fund-raising event at The Crucible Theatre where we performed alongside West-End stars and we continue to seek out diverse opportunities."

“However, you don’t have to be a performer to get involved, we have volunteering positions which access an entire spectrum of jobs that help to make our productions a reality. We are excited to also be working with Chesterfield College and West Notts College to offer work experience placements within a theatrical environment."

Inspirations suffered, like most small communitybased groups, during the pandemic, but

have recovered their numbers and Joshua is overwhelmed by the new people getting involved. The group presently has about 70 performers involved across all age groups...but more are always welcome.

“During the lockdowns we were forced online but continued to run regular rehearsals. We also offered free, online, theatre activities which people from all over the world took part in including several charity concerts which raised nearly £2000 for the NHS and Acting For Others.” says Joshua. “Mental health struggles have become more apparent since the pandemic and being part of the arts can help people massively. If people want to get involved, we don’t hold any type of audition and we welcome everyone regardless of age, gender, sexuality, background, religion, etc," Joshua explains.

"It was noticeable when we restarted face to face sessions how people had been impacted and it’s been a slow recovery process, however today most are back to full strength.”

Inspirations aim to produce several shows each year, one for the senior group, one for the juniors (age 6 to 15) and then a joint performance, this is typically towards the end of the year and has recently been over the festive season. Right now, the senior group are rehearsing for ‘Sister Act’ taking place at The Hasland Playhouse at the end of May, the junior group are then performing Disney’s Aladdin at The Dronfield Civic Hall. Tickets for both are on sale and they have plenty of opportunities for people to get involved.

Joshua was excited to add that Inspirations have been awarded Theatre Company Of The Year for this region for the last three years running! “We have been anonymously nominated so I have no idea who keeps putting us forward but I’m really chuffed to have picked this award up for three consecutive years.”

All rehearsals take place at The Eagle Club in Newbold, Juniors meeting on Tuesday’s between 6:30 and 8:30pm and the seniors, Thursday’s from 7 to 9pm every week.

I finished by asking what’s the best thing about running Inspirations for him? “Watching members progress within the group, from a young child turning up wanting to hide behind parents to standing on stage singing a solo in the spotlight.”

"I also love the way the whole team pull together to produce our shows and perform, it’s an amazingly fulfilling thing to do as my career.”

Words & Images: S40 Team

Boys Bottle Up-dated

The Brookfield BBU Young Enterprise team have had a busy two months raising awareness of mental health issues and developing their business model. Following successful pre-show and interval sales at performances of Grease, they have broadened their range of products to include t-shirts as well as the iconic key-ring, touting their message and merchandise at a Trade Fair with other groups.

The team has also identified its core beneficiaries from profits; these are:

• Derbyshire Mind: the local iteration of this vital mental health charity

• P3: a charity, based locally in Ilkeston, specialising in homelessness prevention, mental health and well-being and services for young people

• Derbyshire Federation for Mental Health: a Matlock-established charity aiming to promote mental health, reduce stigma and promote independence

At time of writing the group was also pulling together their final business plan in preparation for the Young Enterprise Derbyshire County Finals on the 30th March. We hope to bring news of success next time.

You can follow the progress of the team on BoysBottleUp

Born to Hand Jive

A cast of 21st century teens turned the clock back to the 50s in a week of rock’n’roll recreation as Brookfield’s talented Performing Arts team brought Grease to the school stage and a new generation of hand-jivers to the aisles.

Two casts – Mustangs and Cadillacs – brought double the pleasure to audiences attending across the four performances. Set against the rivalries of Rydell High, the show features all those hits some readers will be familiar with from the film featuring the recently passed Olivia Newton-John as straight-laced “Sandra Dee” coming to terms with the apparent insouciance of Danny, her summer romance. Year 11 drama stalwart Joe Carter brought a touch of John Travolta and a lot of himself to the role of Danny; while Y13 leading lights - our very own Olivia Gilthorpe and Isabelle Bambrick - alternated as Sandy.

We Go Together: A strong ensemble cast, with excellent choreography by dance teacher Mrs Carter and dance captains Ava Kimpton and Ruby Waring, made it an occasion to remember for the sell-out audiences. Amazing sound, imaginative lighting and an invisibly seamless stage-crew were also co-ordinated by students. The music, conducted in performance by Head of Music Mr Davey, was co-ordinated through the autumn term rehearsals by keyboard player James Smith and the talented band of students from all year groups. There are Worse Things I Could Do: Artistic Director, Head of Performing Arts Mrs Ashley, called the show “exhausting” but “a triumph”. Excellent pre-performance and interval snacks –including 50s-style popcorn cones perfect for a drive-in show were provided by the Brookfield PFA. Summer Nights: If you missed out on Grease, be sure to look out for publicity about our Summer Showcase. On the evidence of the talent illuminating this show, it will be one not to miss.

The South

Saturday 25 February Jayne attended The Buxton Opera House to see The South, winner of our ticket giveaway courtesy of Maria at MP Promotions. She sent the text and pictures from her night.

"Thanks for the opportunity to see The South last Saturday. Thanks to S40 for choosing my text to win two tickets to see The South.

"Beautiful may no longer be in the name of the band but Buxton Opera House as a venue made up for that - beautiful in all its decorative splendour.

"I thought the audience generally seemed somewhat older than I recalled but then I remembered that in 2002, the last time I saw Beautiful South, I was 20 years younger too!!

"The band played two sets of around 50 minutes, starting with some new songs and slower well known ones and working into a much rockier second half. They played the hits: Rotterdam, Old Red Eyes, Prettiest Eyes, A Little Time and lots more.

"A great gig but Paul Heaton and Jackie Abbott are still missed.

"Thanks for the chance to see them again. "Best Wishes Jayne."

Many thanks to Jayne for letting us know she had a great night, please look out for our future giveaways, this edition it's Scouting for Girls at Uttoxeter Race Course.

A Little Puzzling

Last edition's cover artists Daria and Olya received a rather interesting gift from an S40 Local reader, impressed by their artwork.

Andrew from JHG Puzzles is originally from Ukraine loved the artwork so much he decided to add Daria and Olya to the list of names he's done puzzles for that include Donny Osmond and the National Trust. Andrew's fabulous puzzles are pictured, and I'll look, forward to pictures of the completed puzzles one day!

Huge thanks Andrew and glad to know you like what the ladies do.

Crafters Bazaar

Last July Transition Chesterfield ran their first Crafters Bazaar on Chesterfield market. It was very successful, attracting many artists and crafters from the local area to sell their surplus art and craft materials. Stall holders and visitors all agreed that it was a great success and there were calls for another Crafters Bazaar.

The good news is that it has been announced that there will be another Crafters Bazaar on the main market in Chesterfield on Sunday 21 May 2023 between 10am and 4pm.

Stash Busting

Any artists or crafters who have a large stash of materials e.g. fabric, yarn, paper, card, beads, buttons, threads, crafting tools, art and craft magazines and books who want to have a clear out are welcome to book a stall for just £10. Contact: craftersbazaar@transitionchesterfield. org.uk for an application form. If you don’t want a stall this time, put the date in your diary so you can come and buy some things to add to your own stash!

The Chesterfield Bowling Club has a special place in the history of bowling and the history of Chesterfield. It is a place to be enjoyed and preserved for future generations of residents.

The club is holding a series of Open Days on 15 and 29 April between 11am and 1pm where anybody interested in joining or enjoying a game

It’s not a craft fair selling finished items. It is the place to buy and sell surplus art and craft materials.

Transformation Challenge

This time a new feature will be the Transformation challenge open to all artists and crafters. You don’t need to have a stall or pay to join in. The challenge is to take one old pillowcase and transform it into something else either useful or decorative. Use your artist and crafting skills and your creativity to make something original. There will be a display area at Crafters Bazaar on 21 May to showcase all your creations.

The aims of Crafters Bazaar are to encourage repurposing, upcycling, recycling and keeping things either from languishing in boxes forever or going to landfill.

For more information on Crafters Bazaar and/or the Transformation Challenge see below (advert opposite).

APRIL GARDEN TIPS

Words: Transition Chesterfield

It should be properly spring and noticeably warmer by the time you read this. We've had a generally mild winter where lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators and more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus.

If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes. They are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most types are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.

Lots of vegetables (and many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go directly into the soil, but that may depend on if you've had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil.

If you're not confident about growing things from seed, many seedlings will be sold in garden centres. These will have been raised in a benign environment. They won't appreciate going straight outside, especially if it's chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don't keep them in a heated house.

Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover: tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. If they need watering, it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the soil's surface appears damp; spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres, but they can be pretty expensive for what you get, plus it's far more satisfying to grow things from scratch.

If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year, now is the time to save space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops an excellent start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month.

Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can't produce enough or haven't got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertilisers spread around above where their roots will be and gently forked in – don't overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth sprouts. If you have fruit trees or shrubs, their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will, to some extent, provide their own micro-climate, so they will only suffer minor damage (depending on the severity of the frost) and can be left to take their chances.

Lawns should be growing faster now, so they may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first and rake the surface. Protect any newly sown areas from pigeons.

There isn't a month when you shouldn't be weeding, but it's much more important if the weather is mild!

On the home straight

Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Well, what an up and down, roller coaster of a month it's been for the olde emotions. What happened? Let's have a closer look.

New signings: After Ryan Colclough joined the Spireites following Tshimangas departure. Cookie then also signed two additional strikers, Paul McCallum from Dag & Red and Andrew Dallas from Solihull. The fresh blood seems to be finally adding to the promotion push.

Recap: 17th January was the day it all went south, at the West Bromwich FA Cup replay defeat. Before this we were scoring left right and centre, from all over the park. Jeff King was our top scorer for a while. Chesterfield even held the Championship side to a 3-3 draw. There were countless players on town's scoresheet up until that point of the season. But then things dried up. Things are seemingly on the mend now though.

Just in time to still aim for that 3rd place play off spot though. We can kiss goodbye to automatic promotion or even finishing second. Yes, new signing Colclough is starting to find the back of the net with 4 goals in 6 now, but the previous contributors have all stalled. The big question, given the last 6 weeks or so, was why? Was it due to confidence levels dropping from the 4-0 exit from the cup? Did Cook lose the dressing room? Issues behind the scenes? Or is it just a few bad weeks at the office? We don't know. What we do know is, fans weren't happy. Social media was doing what social media does and caused many heated debates between fans. What is certain though is Paul Cook's determination to get us back into the football league. When Cookie does speak to the press he does speak from the heart and in my view that's good. He's as honest as the day is long. He's been here now for just over a year and I still think he's the right guy for the job. Funny,

Page 62 www.chesterfieldlocal.com Sport

no one was critical of him when we went on our unbeaten runs before the 3rd round exit were they?

Between 24 Jan and 4 March, the Spireites didn't win a game, only scoring 6 goals. Within that time came the two games against Deadpool FC and Notts County. We lost both 2-1 but the Notts Co game, now that was an entertaining home tie! Put simply, Dobra did his best to wind up the travelling fans. Naturally that didn't go down well, well not as easily as Dobra himself did anyway. But having come off the bench Dobra did in fact get on the scoresheet. Oh, and King was sent off. Despite all that - 'It would be the proudest day of my life to take this club back in the Football League' - Paul Cook said after in the post match interview. And against Gateshead we turned the corner, just. Just like the Wrexham game Colclough scored in injury time to steal the win, and his second Spireite goal.

Then 3 days later he claimed his 3rd goal and the winner, against Southend Utd. Both away wins too. But the following home tie against Yeovil we only managed a 1-1 draw from McCullum's penalty straight down the middle. At least this game got played as this was the weekend the snow came, and the frost covers saved the day as well as the amazing volunteers clearing the white stuff to get the game on! Next came the Wealdstone 4-0 win. No that's not a typo it really was a 4 nil away win! With 4 different goalscorers too. This hasn't happened for months. McCallum, Mandeville, Dallas (first Spireite goal) and then Ryan Colclough chipped in the game's fourth, for his 4th goal. At the time of writing, we have just played away at Woking and won 1-0 with a Banks' 37th min penalty. An important 3 points and a clean sheet. So, with only 8 games remaining let's consider the remaining season.

The playoffs: Currently our 5 playoff opponents are Woking, Barnet, Boreham Wood, Eastleigh and Notts County. Personally (woke readers close your eyes here) given the 2-horse race for the automatic promotion spot between Deadpool FC and Notts County, I can't see any other teams getting promoted this season. Yes, I understand the playoff games are similar to the early rounds of the FA Cup where anything is possible. But look at their consistent form. Currently 91 and 90 points a piece with 8 games left to play. And yes, I hear you now saying "last season's playoff winners were Grimsby who finished 6th in the league" but, I just have a feeling they'll both be in League 2 next season. Anyway, regardless of my personal opinion we shall see what occurs in the coming weeks, but I hope the Spireites prove me wrong.

Mud Fairies Wanted

High Ashes Rural Project (HARP) is a place that changes lives, a farm on the edge of Chesterfield that offers a wide and varied range of training and experiences. They allow people of any level to develop skills they never knew they had and give them the confidence to share these skills and their time with others.

If you'd like to help support their work you can do so by taking part in their Spring family friendly 5 and 10k mud run, the next date is Sunday 16 April 2023.

Slide, crawl and run around this great obstacle course. This event is family-friendly and perfect for all abilities. The event isn't about finishing times, although they don't want to be sending out search parties in the dark, but being part of something, hanging around for cake and coffee afterwards, and sharing experiences of your run. All finishers get a medal and leave with an enormous amount of satisfaction! I remember the last one I did! Being waist deep in freezing cold water did bring a tear to my eye but I soon got through it and warmed up... although I don't think my trainers ever recovered!

Adult entry is £13.99 (£25.99 with a T shirt), juniors (12 to 16 years) are £10 (£22 with a T shirt), juniors (7 to 12 years) are £5 (£17 with a T shirt) and under 7's go free (£12 for T shirt). See online for 10k prices.
