CREATING JOBS TO END POVERTY
Others is a Salvation Army initiative using fair trade principles to create jobs and contribute to empowerment and poverty alleviation. We sell beautiful products that are carefully hand-crafted by our artisans in Bangladesh and Kenya.
Others artisans are engaged through relationships with local Salvation Army programs that focus on economic development in rural and urban settings. Examples include self-help groups focusing on women’s empowerment and projects for rehabilitation of sex workers or trafficking victims.
Through training, flexible working conditions and fair wages, our aim is to help our artisans to become more independent, helping them to provide for their families, improve their living conditions, and put their children through school. When supporting Others, you contribute to sustainable development in Bangladesh and Kenya.

MEET NIPA – ONE OF OUR ARTISANS
My name is Nipa and I am 20 years old. I am married with a five year old son. My husband works as a garment worker in Dhaka, which requires him to be away from home and pay rent in Dhaka. He is only able to come home every three months for one week at a time.
When my husband was not employed we had to take a loan out to survive. Working with Others has allowed us to pay off our loan in full and now I am able to care better for my son.

OTHERS IN BANGLADESH
Others began as a local initiative for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh in 1997, and Bangladesh remains our largest producer country, currently involving around 760 artisans (both women and men).
Others Bangladesh produces a wide range of handloomed products, embroidered products, jute products, wooden products, natural fiber and leaf products, and knitted items. Production groups include women’s groups in and around the capital city Dhaka and in a number of villages in Central and Western parts of the country, as well as a handloom unit, carpentry unit and sewing unit in the city of Jashore.
Some artisans are recruited through specific community development projects run by The Salvation Army, such as the Salvation Army’s rehabilitation center in Old Dhaka which provides holistic care and training for women who have been victims of trafficking or exploitation. The Others operation is followed up by the Salvation Army’s local team in Bangladesh, as well as partners from the Others Global network coordinated by the Salvation Army’s International Headquarters.
OTHERS IN KENYA
Others’ first contacts with Kenya were in 1999, with formal connections to some producer groups starting from 2004. Others currently works with nine different production groups in Kenya, located in both urban and rural areas. Products build on locally available raw materials and artisan’s skills, and include bead/ wire products, items made from sisal and leaf, as well as items made from recycled materials such as plastic and paper.
Most artisans are also linked with savings- and loans groups overseen by The Salvation Army locally. In 2020 the partnership with Kenya was expanded to also include small-scale coffee farmers in the area of Matungulu. The first coffee was launched in Norway Christmas 2020, and the goal is to build a long-term partnership to help raise the standard of living for the Matungulu farmers.

These beautiful bags are hand-woven by our groups in Kenya from local sisal plants. Our producers harvest the sisal, extract the fibers, dry them, dye them, spin threads and weave the baskets. The bags have details of genuine leather.

These beautiful wooden shoe horns are designed by the Norwegian product designer Sverre Uhnger and are produced at Others’ carpentry workshop in Jashore, Bangladesh.
Together with our head carpenter Anath and his team, Sverre has developed a functional product of good quality. The shoe horn is made from locally sourced Rain Tree wood and has been treated with a varnish consisting of natural local ingredients.
The shoe horn is available in two sizes, 60 cm and 20 cm. The smallest version is sold in a hand-sewn bag.

Many of our products incorporate embroidery detail, and this skill employs a large number of Others artisans in Bangladesh. This draws on a long tradition of embroidery, that is passed down from generation to generation.
Our artisans are involved in all steps of the production of every product — from sourcing raw materials, to cutting, sewing, finishing and packaging.

Our producers are primarily recruited through the Salvation Army’s local programs. Others has active production groups in Bangladesh and Kenya. Others partners with over 800 artisans. All products are handmade.
The materials for Others products are locally and sustainably sourced. We strive to combine the best of local hand-craft skills and traditions in our products.
