First and foremost, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all SACR colleagues in 2020.

I hope and trust that all enjoyed a blessed and restful festive season with their loved ones.

Before we delve into the new year of work ahead of us, may we reflect on and appreciate the year that was. 2019 was indeed a great year for the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. Last year came with many exciting developments in the communications and events management space. We have made great strides in ensuring that SACR moves with the times and becomes an active participant in the 4th Industrial Revolution agenda.

Thank you to our MEC Mbali Hlophe for your impassioned leadership and thank you to all of you for your support and appreciation of our communication efforts. With renewed energy and focus, let us use the success of our past to inspire us go that extra mile in the present in ensuring an even more prosperous future.

The new year brings new opportunities 2020 brings yet another opportunity to intensify our support to the core line functions and enhance our efforts in ensuring that the people of Gauteng and SACR colleagues are informed of the programmes and activities of the department. May we all work together in repositioning our department and ensuring it becomes top of mind amongst our stakeholders and communities that we serve. Let us continue working together and elevating the department to greater heights of success in ‘Growing Gauteng Together’, all in service to the citizens of the Gauteng province, the ‘Home of Champions’.

Celebrating 50 years of living canon: Case of Kaizer Chiefs

S

port has potential to bring the divided nation and fragmented tribes together.

In 1994, South Africa celebrated the democratic breakthrough, which ushered the government of national unity with attempt to discarding address the legacy of colonial and apartheid projects.

Sport, particularly soccer and Rugby has been symbolic value to building a united and prosperous nation.

The united democratic nation and prosperous society will not ascend from benevolent sky but requires necessary effort by South Africans to unite. Unity is important for our country with inherent nature of state that was built on exclusion and subjugation of black people.

Therefore, sport in South Africa potential addresses the relics of fragmented nation and ethnic consciousness as planted by colonial and apartheid system.

Moreover, on the 7th of January 2020 one of the greatest soccer team in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs, celebrated 50 years. Indeed, it has been half of century since Kaizer Chiefs was founded

by Kaizer Motaung who was a great soccer player in his time. The attribution of celebrating the building of a remarkable team like Kaizer Chiefs is owed to Kaizer Motaung.

Kaizer Motaung was an incredible footballer locally and globally, after playing for abroad.

Premier David Makhura and I (MEC Hlophe) visited Kaizer Chiefs territory at Naturena to pay respect to the relentless and remarkable work done by Kaizer Motaung and his family to building soccer team that South Africans can patriotically find vanity in it.

Today, I would like to take a stand and congratulate Chairman Motaung and his family in building successful soccer team like Kaizer Chiefs which enjoys support of South Africans

particularly black people. It is an inspiration to our generation and the younger generation of our country to seeing the soccer team as Amakhosi celebrate half a century of success.

Amakhosi has remarkable records in our continent and the world and continues to enjoy immense support in the Southern Africa with a support base of over 16 000 000 fans, it is also the only team amongst best teams in South Africa that has won 50 trophies.

The legacy of Kaizer Chiefs is immortal canon that continues to sustain itself through dedication with complementary leadership provided by Ntate Motaung and loyal fans’ support.

The work of Ntate Motaung must inspire the future generation, not only those in the sporting fraternity, but also those coming from marginalised communities aspiring to establish Arts and Heritage Empires. Kaizer Chiefs did not only contribute to the sport as one of the great teams in Africa, but also contributed to the economy of our country through megasport events.

To conclude, I would like to wish Kaizer Chiefs many more years of success and developing of more players who can best represent our nation through our national soccer team Bafana Bafana. It is through soccer teams like Kaizer Chiefs that we enhance our national democratic society and building of cohesive democratic nation.

MEC Hlophe visits Ratanda to officiate school re-opening

O

n Wednesday, 15 January 2020, MEC Mbali Hlophe together with Team SACR and the delegation from Lesedi Municipality joined the Gauteng Provincial Government in marking the start of 2020 academic year. This was part of the efforts to oversee the first day’s proceedings and provide learners and teachers with Learning and Teaching Support Material.

MEC Hlophe visited Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School and Thandisizwe Early Child Development situated at Ratanda in Lesedi Municipality to ensure the readiness of the school. During the visits, mobile libraries, indigenous games material and various sporting equipment were donated to the schools.

On Thursday, the 16th of January, the team returned to Ratanda at Lethabo Siyanqoba Primary and Bertha Gxowa Primary where yet again, sporting and cultural affairs equipment are donated.

Furthermore, part of the Department’s plans is the revival of the School Sports Wednesdays where the Department will be working with various Sport legends to make it a success.

To wrap up the days’ proceedings, a stakeholder engagement meeting took place between the Department, Lesedi Municipality, School Governing Bodies, parents and the community to discuss the state of sport, arts, culture and its impact on Education in Ratanda.

Execute excellently, understand how things start and end. Learn as much as you can, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Don’t be comfortable.

FAREWELL Martin Chaka worked for the department within the Asset Management Unit. He left the department in November 2019. Started his new Job in December 2019 at the Department of Water and sanitation

How long have you worked for the department?

I had the pleasure of working at the Department for a total of nine wonderful years.

What challenges have you encountered since working for the department?

The biggest challenges I have faced during my time there would be the workload that came with being in Asset management and compliance with Asset management processes.

Any advice you would love to share with staff?

I were to give any advice, I’d say, create the right environment for yourself. You spend the majority of your time at work so make sure you keep it professional, develop a solid working relationship with your team and always keep it civil no matter what happens.

Where do you currently work now?

I am currently working for the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Explanatory Manual on the Code of Conduct Note the below discussions and familiarise yourself with the full content of the manual shared with you via email.

1.

In order to give practical effect to the relevant constitutional provisions relating to the Public Service, all employees are expected to comply with the Code of Conduct ('the Code').

2.

The purpose of a code of conduct is to develop and maintain a standard of conduct that is acceptable to the company, its vendors, customers and other employees.

3.

The most common sections to include in a code of conduct are; ethical principles - includes workplace behaviour and respect for all people, standard of conduct - includes complying with the job description, commitment to the organisation and proper computer, internet and email usage etc.

4.

The need exists to provide guidelines to employees with regard to their relationship with the legislature ,political and executive office-bearers, other employees and the public and to indicate the spirit in which employees should perform their duties, what should be done to avoid conflicts of interests and what is expected of them in terms of their personal conduct in public and private life.

5.

The Code should act as a guideline to employees as to what is expected of them from an ethical point of view, both in their individual conduct and in their relationship with others. Compliance with the Code can be expected to enhance professionalism and help to ensure confidence in the Public Service.

Employee Relations will be conducting awareness workshops on the code of conduct for all employees. Dates of the awareness workshops will be communicated once confirmed.

6 ways to make your 2020 fitness resolutions last This year, set yourself some attainable goals and take small steps to become your best self. Here are six easy ways to start.

1. Count every step

Record your daily steps with a wearable fitness device or your smartphone (just make sure to take it everywhere!). Taking the stairs will up your heart rate and increase your steps. As your daily steps increase, you won’t stop walking to reach the next level.

2. Drink more water

Your body is made up of 60% water, which helps maintain digestion and body temperature, and absorb nutrients. Skip the carbonated drinks and keep a refillable water bottle at your desk or in your bag.

3. Mix it up

Join an exercise class (or two!) with a friend or colleague to keep you motivated and really drive results.

4. Build your core

Make a habit to flex your stomach muscles before you get out of bed in the morning. Lay on your back and pull your stomach toward your spine, lift your pelvis gently then lower it again.

Repeat 15 times each day for a strong core.

5. Breathe in deeply

Very few of us breathe correctly. Do this simple exercise twice a day to improve blood flow, digestion, posture and more: Take air in through your nose for 2 seconds and fill your stomach, then breathe out slowly through your lips.

6. Track your progress

Use your smartphone health app to keep track of your progress.

aking up early, every day to arrive at work on time is one of the most significant challenges I have been facing ever since I joined the Department as an Intern. In the early days of joining the Department, I thought it was the fact that I was still at my tender age and needed more sleep, but as the years went by, I realised that the habit was now becoming entrenched in me. So as part of my “leadership ladderclimbing trajectory,� I then sought for ways of instilling a new habit of getting up right on time, which, if all things equal, would get me to work on time and reward me with enormous productivity.

Fortunately, I recently learnt about The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma, which has been shaping many lives when it comes to developing selfmastery of waking up early and owning your mornings.

In this book, Robin Sharma, advocates for early mornings, which should be achieved through, amongst other things, early rest and switching off of gadgets, such as mobile phones, tablets and computers at least one hour before dozing off.

Sharma outlines the model of instilling the habit of waking up early and how to make the new habit stick. Furthermore, the book brings out exciting and beneficial concepts for any person in their growth path. The following are important learnings from the book: -
