Welcome

Welcome to our Autumn season. The 2023/24 season is particularly significant as it is our 10th birthday. Since 2016 the Hall has existed without regular funding and there have been times when I wondered if we would make it to our tenth season. It is therefore a huge relief and delight to me that the 2023/24 Autumn season is not only happening, but probably one of the strongest we have ever presented.

Our programme spans orchestral music, gospel, jazz, early music, new music, big band, brass band and spoken word. We are constantly diversifying our presentations and many of our new initiatives do not make it into our brochure. Please do sign up to our newsletter or keep checking our website for new events. Additional talks, musical shows, off-site events and new foyer activity are the kinds of events that might be added after we go to print, so please make sure you keep in touch.

This season we welcome back artists who have been on this journey with us from the very start. Resident Orchestras the London Philharmonic and Britten Sinfonia form the backbone of a quality line-up of orchestras and ensembles each season. This autumn they are joined by Arcangelo, the Hallé, BBC Concert Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Roomful of Teeth, the Sixteen and Tenebrae.

Many of the world’s great artists have visited Saffron Hall and, indeed, we are delighted to welcome back Paul Lewis, the Brodsky Quartet and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt. But making their Saffron Hall debuts this season are Nigel Kennedy, Víkingur Ólafsson and Piotr Anderszewski. There is a strong Bach theme running through this year’s programme with Víkingur’s Goldberg Variations and Nigel Kennedy play/directing four violin concertos, including the sumptuous double violin concerto.

The jazz, world and folk programme this autumn features awardwinning saxophonist and presenter YolanDa Brown, super-star folk collective Gigspanner Big Band, and Aurora Orchestra who are joined by hang player Manu Delago. Talks this autumn include cricket commentating legend Henry Blofeld and poet laureate Simon Armitage. If you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and good street food, our excellent Foyer Jazz and Folk evenings are very popular, so book early.

As this is our 10th birthday, we invite you to join us for a celebratory weekend of events in early December. Jess Gillam, Iestyn Davies and jazz vocalist Juliet Kelly are just a few of the artists who have been regular visitors to the Hall over the last ten years and they will join us in a long weekend of concerts and workshops featuring world-class artists alongside young people and local amateur musicians. We hope to represent every area of our public, schools and community programmes.

A glamorous older aristocrat is torn between keeping Octavian, her young lover, for herself or helping him win the girl of his dreams. The plot thickens when the lecherous Baron Ochs pursues both Octavian, disguised as a chambermaid, and his intended bride. Accompanied by a sumptuously melodic score, this concert performance of Richard Strauss’ bittersweet comic masterpiece concludes with one of opera’s most ravishing trios.

A programme full of the rhythms, dances and melodies of central and eastern Europe, and a visit from one of the world’s great violinists. Bartók’s flamboyant concerto is a love letter to his beloved Hungary before leaving his homeland forever, brought to life by the rich-toned and breathtakingly agile playing of Christian Tetzlaff. In Dvorák’s brooding, impassioned symphony the cross rhythms of Bohemia’s peasant dances are underpinned by a melancholy undertow. An appropriately stormy Beethoven overture sets the scene.

This virtuosic British brass quintet harness the delicate intimacy of chamber music and the rich toned power reminiscent of a full brass band. They are making waves at home and abroad; after prestige appearances at the Lucerne Festival and the Wigmore Hall they return with a characteristically bold and vibrant programme, from folk-tinged miniatures from Northern Europe to the lush Romanticism of the African-American Florence Price.

An Audience with Henry Blofeld Thoughts & Talks

Adored as the voice of English cricket, ‘Blowers’ brings his wit and wisdom to the stage. This is the story of a colourful life behind and away from the commentary booth, as well as his behind the scenes of the real Marigold Hotel experience as seen on TV, told in his own inimitable irrepressible style. There are enough irreverent anecdotes and meandering digressions to fill many a Test Match Special rain break. A special evening in the company of a quintessential Englishman and of the great raconteurs.

Pioneering virtuoso percussionist collaborates with Aurora Orchestra for the first live orchestrated performance of his stunning 2021 audiovisual album Environ Me, weaving his trademark acoustic instruments with field recordings of the natural world and electronica. Environ Us is preceded by music exploring our relationship with light, from seventeenth-century England to twenty-first-century Iceland and Delago’s radiant, euphoric Newton’s Rainbow.

‘One of the most beautiful voices Britain has produced in a generation’ (International Record Review), soprano Elizabeth Watts joins Britten Sinfonia to perform Finzi’s charming song cycle celebrating the joy and innocence of a baby’s view of the world. Richard Blackford’s new songs set powerfully moving poems of love, longing and fury by Afghan writer Nadia Anjuman, whose courageous life was tragically cut short when she was killed, aged 25, by her husband.

With music and characterisation which still feel strikingly modern, Monteverdi’s darkly troubling depiction of violence and intrigue at the court of the Emperor Nero was one of the first operatic masterpieces. Multi-genre musician and composer Yshani

Perinpanayagam conducts a new arrangement of the score, with an English translation of the libretto from poet and classicist Helen Eastman.

On the surface Rossini’s opera is a vivacious retelling of the Cinderella story, complete with a murderously wicked stepfather and astonishingly virtuosic vocal parts for Angelina – Cinderella –and the Prince Ramiro. However beneath the wholesome moral triumph of goodness and kindness lurks a more biting commentary on status and desire.

But these two sextets are linked by impassioned directness and sumptuous, romantic string-writing.

Nicolas Altstaedt is a cellist of dynamic flair and vivid imagination, and in the period ensemble orchestra Arcangelo he finds an ideal sparring partner for Boccherini’s delightful concertos, with their mixture of suave elegance and zest for life. YolanDa Brown

Award-winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown brings her delicious fusion of reggae, jazz and soul. She has toured with artists such as The Temptations, Jools Holland and Billy Ocean and is currently composing music for the iconic Sesame Street. She was awarded an OBE for services to music, music education and broadcasting in the 2023 New Year Honours List. A BAFTA nominated broadcaster, you would have seen her on TV shows like Celebrity Mastermind or Portrait Artist of the Year. Join YolanDa Brown and her band for some sunshine music.

Elgar was inspired to write this moving choral and orchestral music after reading the poem by Cardinal Newman. The poem and Elgar’s music follow the story of Gerontius approaching death and of his soul’s journey to meet his guardian Angel and face the judgement of God. On the way he meets choruses of angels and of demons. Eventually he is taken to purgatory before attaining everlasting glory.

Haydn’s mighty Mass setting gained its nickname after Nelson’s victory in Egypt checked Napoleon’s advance across Europe.

Mozart’s ‘solemn’ Vespers often seem anything but, and they share with Haydn’s mass a joyous affirmation of faith in music both uplifting and serene. In both works, it is the choir who has the star role, and who better to present two classical choral masterpieces than Harry Christophers’ superb forces. Mozart’s famous little string divertimento provides more balm for the soul, should any be needed.

Mixing exquisitely detailed hand-drawn animations with live performers and some memorable melodies, Tchaikovsky’s glittering ballet is given new life in an ingenious intimate staging for solo pianist, dancer, and digital animation. Cinderella longs for a more happy and exciting life away from her wicked stepsisters. Thankfully, she has her loveable companion, Buttons, there to look after her. When the dashing Prince Charming decides to hold a ball to find his future wife, this may just be the chance Cinderella has been waiting for. Can the Fairy Godmother help Cinderella get to the ball? With the help of some mice and a pumpkin – anything is possible!

Admired for his crystal clarity and spontaneous freshness, Piotr Anderszewski presents music that traces his Polish-Hungarian roots framed by some of Bach’s most florid and adventurous large-scale keyboard works. Bach’s buoyant rhythms are echoed in a selection inspired by Poland’s national dance and in the vivacity and impish humour of Bartók’s miniatures.

The New Year tradition comes with Viennese decadence and a little Spanish sunshine. Rodrigo’s instantly recognisable and beloved guitar concerto adds Spanish flair to the swirling dances of 19thcentury Vienna, its famous slow movement a gorgeous moment of calm amongst the hurly-burly, the Iberian dance rhythms of outer movements every bit as spritely as the music produced by Johann Strauss II and his contemporaries. Like any good festive celebration, this party has elegance, excess, changes of pace and mood and a few surprises!

Brahms Clarinet Trio in A minor Op.114

Beethoven Piano Trio in E flat major Op.38

Three musicians from Young Concert Artists Trust combine in two chamber music masterpieces written for a special instrumental combination. Brahms’ late work, full of autumnal serenity and muscular vigour, combines one of his characteristically beautiful slow movements with music imbued with a dash of gypsy style. Beethoven’s trio is actually an arrangement of his own large-scale septet, but the reduction in forces seems only to reinforce the work’s dark-hued colouration, lyrical inspiration and fizzing energy.

Refunds & exchanges

We will continue to offer bookers the opportunity to request a refund of the ticket value if an event is postponed, cancelled or abandoned less than half way through. If a Saffron Hall-presented event is sold out, we are able to return tickets in exchange for venue credit if informed more than 72 hours in advance of the event. In either case, booking fees cannot be refunded or returned as credit.

For most Saffron Hall-presented events tickets for Under 25s are half price or discounted.

Getting here by car

Saffron Hall is easy to get to. We’re a half-hour drive from Cambridge and Bishop’s Stortford and easily accessible from the M11. Once you’re here, we have over 400 free car parking spaces on site, including allocated blue badge and accessible parking.

Getting here by train & shuttle bus

The nearest station is Audley End Station, two miles away. Regular services run from London Liverpool Street and Cambridge. We run a free shuttle bus service between Audley End Station and the Hall for most Saffron Hall-presented events. To check if this service is available for the event you have booked, please visit our website.

Food & drink

Saffron Hall’s bar is open for 1 hour prior to each performance and during the interval, serving a selection of drinks and light snacks. We serve street food for selected events, which is available to pre-order via our website.

Accessibility

For most events we can offer bookers access to allocated wheelchair spaces, wheelchair companion seats and step-free seating which can be found in rows D and Z. These seats are not on sale to the general public, but can be booked online following a one-time setup process you can request by getting in touch with us. Alternatively, access tickets can be booked by emailing access@saffronhall.com or calling 01799 588545.
