Backyard DIY Projects
Summer is just around the corner so it’s the perfect time to start planning some fun projects for your backyard. Whether you are looking for new ways to entertain and host friends or you want to surprise your spouse or family with an improved aesthetic, here are some DIY projects that can help make your backyard even more spectacular
1. Fire Pit. If you buy the stones and materials yourself, you can make a firepit in less than a day and for under $100. Get ready for some s’mores and scary stories around the campfire right from your backyard
2. Tree Swing. Making a tire swing is another cheap project that can be completed in less than a day You will need a chain, rope, drill, wood for the seat, and a healthy tree to hang it from Buy a pre-made tree swing seat to make this process even easier
3. Garden Bed . This is a great project for DIY lovers with a green thumb Get ready to eat your own homegrown herbs and vegetables when you create a garden bed in your yard Make sure to use cedar for the boundary because it is rot resistant.
4. Outdoor Lighting. Brighten up your backyard with some easy lighting ideas, such as hanging lanterns, lining wired lights on your trees, or adding some fixtures along your walkway. Make your backyard a soothing retreat with some ambient lighting
5. Bird Feeder. Show some love to your neighborhood birds by creating a bird feeder for your backyard Make sure to place your feeder away from any windows and in a high area so no other animals can reach it Get ready for some lovely bird songs.
Many things in our world are out of our control, but one thing you can control is you home environment. There many simple changes you make to instill some much needed peace into your liv space. In order to create a peaceful environment in th home, make sure everythin you see, smell, hear, and to gives you a calm feeling ins
It can be stressful and overwhelming to see all your knick-knacks and papers sprawled across you desk or table Make it a hab to declutter and organize each room at least once a week to keep a zen-like state of mind
Another way to increase the peace in your home is making sure it smells wonderful Candles and air fresheners work well, but if you want to give your home a truly soothing scent, consider an essential oil
diffuser There is a huge variety of essential oils, but hints of lemon, peppermint, or sandalwood can really help introduce a sense of calm in your home.
On to the ears! To add soothing sounds into your home atmosphere, find a good speaker system to play smooth jazz or natural sounds as you
work or relax at home Or, if you prefer silence, consider soundproofing a room to cancel out outside noise. Finally, consider adding a plush blanket to your couch or bed to settle down with in the evenings or add a soft rug to hug your toes as you walk around!

CERTIFIED LIFE COACH (JAY SHETTY LIFE COACHING PROGRAM) WILL BE AN UPCOMING FEATURE COVER STORY FOR THE ONTARIO SOUTH ASIAN HEALTH MAGAZINE
Rekha was born and raised in Ontario, Canada to parents who immigrated independently and met here in Canada. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario, and then proceeded to become a Registered Nurse.
Rekha has been a nurse for 24 years and she’s a consultant with a B-Corp company that specializes in clean, vegan skincare, nutrition and cosmetics.
She recently graduated from Jay Shetty’s Certification School and is now a Certified Life Coach. Rekha is a twice-divorced mom of 6 and a domestic-abuse survivor.
After her second divorce, she felt a lot of shame and humiliation. Not only shame for being divorced twice, but also shame around her husband cheating on her. He tried to make me believe that something was wrong with her. After being in a very dark place for quite some time, she finally decided to take control over her life and emotions. Rekha realized that narcissists are very good at making themselves look good, even when they are doing bad things. She realized that she is an amazing person and am much stronger than she thought.
Rekha started sharing her story on social media in hopes of helping other women who were feeling unworthy after their divorce. Instagram account grew to over 30,000 followers, however she had to stop using that account because of the amount of South Asian men who were attacking her for speaking up for women. It was then that she realized the huge need, especially in the South Asian community, for women to be courageous and stand up for themselves. They need a voice. Rekha has made it her mission to help other moms gain the confidence and skills needed to overcome the shame and stigma that comes with being a divorced mom, so that they can hold their heads high and be proud of who they are.
She has created a free resource online for divorced moms called "5 Tips To Help You Get Unstuck After Your Divorce".
SAVE K BRAR
The Savek Brar story is a testament of perseverance and determination. Savek started off playing house hockey, he never gave up on his dreams of excelling in the sport despite facing challenges. He slowly worked his way up the sports ladder, eventually being selected to play rep hockey. Savek continued to improve on his talent and began to realize that hard work paid off in any form. Whether it was hockey or volleyball, Savek quickly excelled in both sports. He reached new heights in volleyball as well. Savek came just came short of a gold medal in the BC provincial championships ending up with a silver medal instead with his volleyball team. Showcasing his skills on a national level he performed well and advanced his athletic achievements by gaining a medal on a national
stage. Savek was selected to play Team BC volleyball the following year. When the games started Savek had to compete for playing time and learned to shine with the time he was given. Savek’s coaches believed he could take them to the gold medal match, proving his consistency and ability to perform under pressure, which Savek did as he helped secure the gold. During this time Savek’s journey in hockey took another positive turn when he was selected into WHL (Western Hockey League) camps and eventually making it onto a Junior B hockey club team. This achievement opened new doors for him and provided him a stepping stone with more opportunities to showcase his talent.
The pinnacle of his hockey career came when Savek was selected to join the prestigious Delta Hockey Academy where he offered his specialties of "hard nose hockey" to his team. Brar's hockey style of physical, gritty and skilled hockey caught the eye of many scouts in the SJHL, MJHL and CCHL. Delta spoke volumes about his skills and potential, as he was chosen to be a part of an elite program, that nurtures and develops promising young players like Brar.
Currently, Savek Brar is playing for the BCHL Surrey Eagles, a team in the British Columbia hockey league. His inclusion in this team, signifies his growth and progress as a hockey player. With every game, Savek continues to soar to new heights displaying his skills, determination, and passion for the sport. Registering three goals and five assist eight points during rookie season, Brar is projected to double or triple these numbers next season after a hard offseason of training. Seeking a division 1 offer to further education and hockey this is just the beginning for Brar.
Ron Brar the father of Savek shared his thoughts "Savek is a very hardworking kid. I've watched his tremendous growth in such a short time. He's a major hard worker and competitor who has never been afraid of another player or team". Surrey Eagles head coach Cam Keith shared his thoughts as well, "Savek is a high energy player and an agitator who can really get underneath an opponent's skin. He can draw penalties, play physically and help shut down players on the opposition".
Savek’s story is an inspiration to aspiring athletes, reminding them that hard work, dedication, and never giving up on their dreams can lead to incredible achievements.

PASSION & HEALTH
Passion is a driving force that fuels our dreams, motivates our actions, and ultimately leads us to success. Throughout our lives, we discover strengths that define us, and for many, this strength lies in a deep-rooted passion for a particular craft. For me, that passion has always resided in the world of art and drawing. However, it wasn't until high school that I discovered my true calling – the art of cutting hair.
As I started experimenting with haircuts on my friends, I quickly realized the satisfaction that came from transforming their appearances. This ignited a fire within me, and I took it upon myself to master the skill of creating the best fades. It was this passion and commitment to excellence that set me apart from others. Cutting hair wasn't just a job; it was a form of artistic expression that allowed me to make a positive impact on people's lives.
Another crucial aspect of my success in the hair industry is my ability to connect with clients on a personal level. When someone steps into my shop, they place their trust in me to enhance their appearance. This trust is not something I take lightly. I believe that being personable and attentive to my clients' needs is essential. I take pride in creating a comfortable environment where they can relax, knowing they are in capable hands. The joy I feel when my clients leave the shop feeling confident and looking good is immeasurable. However, as we journey through life, we come to realize that health plays an increasingly significant role. With a schedule filled with appointments, it can be challenging to prioritize self-care. That's why I've made it a point to incorporate health into my daily routine. Mornings at the gym and a well-balanced diet have become non-negotiables. Taking care of my physical well-being not only ensures that I can continue to pursue my passion, but it also enhances my overall quality of life. In my quest for optimal health, I recently discovered the incredible benefits of sea moss. This natural superfood has become an integral part of my daily nutritional intake. Packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, sea moss has boosted my energy levels and strengthened my immune system. Incorporating such nutrient-rich elements into our routines can significantly contribute to our long-term wellbeing.
Lastly, I firmly believe that finding one's passion and pursuing it relentlessly is the key to a fulfilling life. When we are passionate about something, our commitment and dedication know no bounds. It becomes the driving force that propels us forward, even in the face of challenges. Alongside this,
surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals who share our vision is equally crucial. Our immediate circle of friends should inspire and motivate us to be better versions of ourselves. Together, we can uplift one another and reach new heights.
In conclusion, the combination of passion, health, and a supportive network lays the foundation for success in any endeavor. By wholeheartedly pursuing our passions, prioritizing our well-being, and surrounding ourselves with those who inspire us, we unlock our true potential. Embrace your passion, take care of yourself, and let your surroundings fuel your journey. With these elements in place, you are bound to create a life that is both fulfilling and extraordinary.

the Natural Health Industry
Nature’s Source, a traditional health food store founded by Sanjiv and Mona Jagota, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It has three stand-alone locations in the greater Toronto area. Additionally, Sanjiv owns and operates 13 Nature’s Signature stores, all located inside Metro grocery stores, spanning across Southern Ontario.
1)Tell us about both of your backgrounds and what inspired you to start Nature’s Source?
Sanjiv – I studied Health Sciences in both University and College and worked in the pharmaceutical industry. From there, I transitioned into the Health Food Industry where my passion was.
Mona – I studied Commerce and have worked with Nature’s Source from day one. I oversee the finance department.
2)Over the past 25 years in the natural foods industry, what are some of the key observations, challenges and how have things progressed?
We have seen more emphasis on research and more awareness to natural health. One of the most pressing issues is pricing. Some health food store owners don’t have business expertise, and they think everything is about offering product at a low price. We spend too much time competing against discounters. Low pricing doesn’t get us anywhere. Margins continue to be an issue for retailers, he adds, along with finding ways to keep staff in the industry. Attracting and keeping clients is also an everevolving quandary. I also believe the future for health food retailers is based on the exchanges taking place between customers and store staff. I think if retailers are going to exist in the marketplace, we have to get stronger in customer service, in how we do things in the retail selling space. We have to offer more on the retail floor than we do today. We have to give people a reason to shop in our stores, and not seek other methods or destinations to buy their supplements.”
3)How is Nature’s Source different from other natural health stores?
Our approach has been to carry evidence-based products that are therapeutic and free of artificial colours and flavours. The vast majority of our store staff are health professionals, such as registered nutritionists, naturopathic doctors, and sports nutritionists.
4)What supplements are most important for children, men, women, and seniors in general?
To begin with, the basics should be Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Magnesium and a Vitamin B Complex. The supplements needed by people change as their nutritional needs change as we go through various stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy, post-partum, middle age, and elderly.
5)What are some of the common health issues the South Asian community is dealing with and which products do you recommend?
Our community is generally concerned with diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and mental illness. It is best to speak with our in-store experts
to ensure the correct mix of natural health products and to avoid conflicts with medications, which is often underplayed.
6)Food lacks nutritional value, so (in your opinion) which supplements are most required in today’s environment, based on the western diet?
Probiotics and digestive enzymes are very important. Probiotics help maintain the correct microbiome for efficient digestion, supporting immune functions, and making vitamins B and K available for the rest of the body. Digestive enzymes help break down various foods of lower nutritive value, and make the nutrients available to be absorbed by the intestines.
7)What is the most common/ popular supplement sold in your stores and why?
Plant-based protein has recently become very popular among all age groups. Many people use it to make sure they get enough energy and protein in the diets. Some people find it easier to digest than whey protein.
8)In your opinion, what is the greatest factor to determine good health beyond supplements?
Avoiding white sugar, white flour, and pop! Exercise and good sleep go a long way to promoting better health. Working closely with a practitioner is a big bonus!
9)As a husband-wife team working together in business, are there any tips you can share with our readers?
We stay out of each other’s lanes; Mona is much smarter than me in many areas of the business which I try to stay out of and vice versa.
10)What are your future plans/goals for the company?
We will continue to serve the communities we are in the best we can and continue to grow into new communities across Ontario.
11)What are your thoughts on the www.saveoursupplements.ca campaign?
Health Canada is purposing new regulations which will have a negative impact on the availability of natural health products in Canada. I am not sure our vendors will be able to keep up with the costs of adapting. With their costs going up, consumers will be impacted, making their health journey that much more expensive. One thing for sure is that we will lose the depth of range of products.
You’re Not Alone
Peer Support connects Canadians affected by kidney disease.
Being diagnosed with kidney disease is life-changing and can happen with little or no warning. The Kidney Foundation provides support and resources to help people live well with kidney disease.
Peer Support can help make the journey easier to bear. Talking to others with similar life experiences about what to expect when learning to live with kidney disease can be an important step in the journey. The Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Connect peer support program offers one-to-one support, where you are paired with a trained volunteer; online support through kidneyconnect.ca and numerous group support meetings each month held virtually. There has been tremendous growth in group support in Ontario, including niche groups for those early in their kidney journey living with reduced kidney function, caregivers, parents of children living with kidney disease and those living with a kidney transplant.
Peer Support volunteers do not offer medical advice, but they can tell you about their experience with kidney disease and how they balance family life, work and social activities. They’ll be able to answer many of your questions, because they’ve been there too. We have patient volunteers who speak a variety of different languages and can offer support in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi.
No matter where you are in your journey with kidney disease, help is a phone call away. Learn more by calling 1.866.390.7337 email ontario.programs@kidney.ca or visit our website.

Rosie Kaur
As a primary caregiver to my family, I never anticipated progress in life and barely survived as I managed ongoing anxiety, bronchitis, pneumonia and depression. However, at my initial turning point, I discovered Bob Proctor’s teachings and discovered the connection disease has to your body and was able to remove every last ounce of disease from my own body. For the first time in my life, I had no stress about what my responsibilities were and allowed the universe to guide me. I wouldn’t be here today if it was not for my persistence and determination of my inner being.
Today I am a transformational life coach to those who are ready to free themselves from the grasp of their limited minds. Today I live the life I deserve, but that I only used to dream of daily. Now I strive every day to bring that same reality to fruition for each of my clients.
