From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Today the Church enters into the most solemn and holiest of her days. The 40 days of Lenten fasting, prayer, and almsgiving have been preparing us to celebrate the mysteries of our redemption. We experience our Passover from death to life through the saving and loving actions of Jesus.

Palm Sunday is a day of dichotomy. At the beginning of our liturgy, Jesus is hailed as King and the crowd cries out “Hosanna.” But the cries of joy will quickly turn into a call for His death. He will find those who loved and supported Him throughout His public life have run for cover. It is with this understanding that Holy Week begins. You will notice that we end the liturgy in silence as a reminder of the atmosphere we should create in our own lives. In the silence of our prayer, we listen to the words of these days; to experience the ritual and live it anew. Though they may be familiar words and actions, we are different and we must be open to the power of the Holy Spirit that wants to speak to us today and at this moment in our lives.

Holy Thursday celebrates the Institution of the Eucharist (Mass) and the creation of the priesthood. It is in the bread and wine (food for our journey) that Jesus will be remembered for all time. When we gather to worship the Lord at Mass, He becomes present not as a symbol under the Bread and Wine...but really and truly present, His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. We also learn how to live as the Disciples of Jesus. As He, who is Lord, washed the feet of the eleven, so we are called to be “foot washers” to one another. The Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharist) will be solemnly processed from the Church to the Chapel. The Altar of Repose will be in the chapel and the faithful are invited to spend time before the Lord in silence. The doors of the Church will be left open till 11:00 PM for the faithful to “come to sit and pray” before and with the Lord in the Eucharist.

Good Friday recalls when the ultimate act of love is given to us. Jesus willing dies on the cross to save us from our sins and to give us a share in everlasting life. At the 3:00 PM Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion, the Church invites us to venerate the wood of the Cross...that first altar of sacrifice of the New Covenant. At 7:00 PM, we will gather to walk the Stations of the Cross.

Holy Saturday the Church waits in silence for the first light of dawn that heralds the end of death because of that first Easter Morning. At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, (which is called the Mother of all Liturgies of the Church), we gather to hear the words of Sacred Scripture (the Bible). These words tell the history of our salvation. At the Gloria (which has not been sung in Lent) we will ring in Easter Day and the joyful hymns and songs of victory. Purple will be replaced by white and gold and the stark and bare Church will be filled with flowers and beauty as a sign of the joy of the Resurrection and New Life. It is the night that those adults who have been preparing for Baptism will be received into the Church.

Prepare, my sisters and brothers, to truly celebrate these days of wonder and awe. I invite and encourage you to participate in as many of the liturgies as possible. If you have never been to the Easter Vigil, I would encourage you to attend and let yourself be touched by the symbols and ritual. It is truly a moving and joyful night.

You will notice that the Church does not celebrate morning Mass during the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday). But to mark the solemnity and prepare for the celebrations in the evening, we gather at 9:00 AM to celebrate the Morning Prayer of the Church.

I also encourage you to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to confess your sins and enter with purity into these wondrous days. Please note that Monday, April 3rd, is the Diocesan Day of Reconciliation. In every parish throughout the Diocese (and in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn) priests will be available in all churches from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for those wishing to go to Confession. Confessions will also be heard from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Holy Saturday. At Noon we will have the ceremony of the blessing of the baskets of food for your Easter tables.

There is much going on... and many blessings that will be offered to us. Use these days wisely so that together we may encounter the living God. I wish you and your families a blessed and joyful Holy Week.

In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Good Friday Collection

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The pandemic hit particularly hard the Christians in the Holy Land. Most of them depend on pilgrimages for work. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection is also necessary to meet the basic needs of the People of God still living in this Land where the Church was born. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday.

Sunday of Divine Mercy

April 16, 2023

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 12:00 Noon Mass.

Three Consecutive Holy Hours: 1:00-2:00pm 2:00-3:00pm 3:00-4:00pm (Join in any one).

Closing Benediction at 4:00pm.

Jesus’ Message of Mercy is summarized as ABC:

A- Ask for God’s Mercy

B- Be merciful to others

C- Completely trust in God’s mercy.

The Five Elements of the Message are summarized as FINCH:

F- Feast of Divine Mercy

I- Image of Divine Mercy

N- Novena of Divine Mercy

C- Chaplet of Divine Mercy

H- Hour of Mercy

We wish to feature the Chaplet of Divine Mercy this year. Jesus revealed it to Sr. Faustina as a powerful prayer He wants everyone pray. Sr. Faustina was interceding in her own words about a dire situation – to no avail. Then the Lord gave her the words of the chaplet, and as she began to pray those words the hand of the ‘angel of punishment’ was stayed! The Lord directed her to pray in those words, and to teach others to do the same.

“Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you…Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death…When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior…Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy…Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will” (Diary, 687, 1541, 1731).

The Chaplet can be prayed anytime, anywhere. The Lord also asked that it be recited as a novena over the 9 days before the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday). We can pray it for our own personal intentions, for others, for the Lord’s intentions. “By this novena [of chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796).

HAPPY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! May the Divine Mercy ever bless you and yours! And may you ever come to Him with the vessel of Trust – and draw!

The Chaplet of Mercy

Recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner:

First of all, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe in God.

On the Our Father Beads, say the following words:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the Hail Mary Beads, say the following words:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

In conclusion, recite these words three times:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

LENTEN

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Merciful God, as we enter Holy week, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Stir up within us the gift of faith that we may not only praise Him with our lips, but may follow Him in the way of the cross.

Jesus invites us to dwell within His Presence. And there to come to know the breadth and depth of His love, mercy and kindness that He shows to us. While it’s nice to read or study about the love and mercy of God, how radically different it is from experiencing His love and mercy.

So you are invited this Lenten season to carve out a few extra minutes to be still before God in at Adoration. Quiet your heart that you might hear His heart speak: Cor ad Cor. Heart to heart.

Yes, come with all your concerns and worries; come with all your hopes and desires; come with all your fears and unmet dreams; come with all your sin and what burdens you down; come as you are. But most importantly simply come with your heart. Place it all before Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. Quietly sit in His presence. Gaze upon Him as He tenderly gazes upon you. Listen to His quiet voice: Cor ad Cor. Heart to heart. How blessed to experience the love of God in so intimate a way at Adoration.

“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

“Jesus went up on a mountain by himself to pray.” (Matthew 14:22)

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in and eat with that person and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

“My soul finds rest in God.” (Psalm 62:1)

Bishop Barres Makes Pastoral Visit to St. Mary’s

This past Saturday, Fr. Bob joyfully welcomed Bishop John O. Barres to St. Mary’s to celebrate the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass. The Bishop took the time to meet parishioners before the Mass, concelebrated by Fr. Bob, Fr. Dominik, Fr. Kingsley, and Fr. Matthew. After the beautiful celebration of the Eucharist, Bishop Barres went to Immaculata Hall, where he met with students of the High School’s Performing Arts Program. The cast and crew of Cinderella were surprised by the visit and enthusiastically received his words of appreciation for their God-given talents. He prayed with them and asked for God’s blessings upon them before they took their positions to start the show. Thank you to Bishop Barres for the wonderful visit to our church and school. His presence truly blessed us!

If you missed the Bishop’s homily, please visit our livestream tab on www.saintmarysmanhasset.org and select March 25 to view the Mass.

Because No Marriage is Beyond Hope

Phillipians 2:6-11- “Christ, though he was in the form of God did not regard equality iwth God. Rahter he emptied himself...humbled himself.” At times we need to empty ourselves of sin and be humble with our spouse.” God will reward our relationship as we express our love and communicate better with our spouse. Isaiah 50 says, “The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue.” Check out a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience and learn the tools to enrich your relationship.
