From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21)

In these days of celebration, as we reflect on the power of the Resurrection of Jesus, we always need to ask ourselves what it means for us. In today’s Gospel, St. Thomas doubted the Resurrection of Jesus. He needed proof, physical proof. Touching and seeing would be the only things to convince him. It seems that the sight of Jesus is enough; St. Thomas bows and says, “My Lord and my God.” Such great words and a deep profession of faith. One that each believer must, in their own life, come to grips with. When we can truly profess Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then we can believe His message for us. What does He do in today’s Gospel? He sends the disciples out into the world. They are to go with a message proclaiming to all the words of St. Thomas . . . MY LORD AND MY GOD.

The Holy Spirit that Jesus breathed on those frightened people huddled in the Upper Room is the same Holy Spirit that has been given to us. The Holy Spirit doesn’t give us a power of fear, but one of strength and faith. He is there to help us in our doubts, fears, and weaknesses. BUT the Spirit works in us if we, like St. Thomas, fall before the Lord and proclaim Him as Lord. If we cannot do that right now in certainty of belief, then we need to fall again before Jesus and ask for the gift of deep faith. Ask the Holy Spirit to remove the doubt or need for “proof” to believe. The proof is certainly around us if we have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. Look around and see the hand of God. Faith in Jesus then calls us to share His love with the entire world. As He sends the disciples out, He does the same for us. Do not be afraid, Jesus did for the eleven as He does for us...He offers His peace. DO NOT BE AFRAID!

As the Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday, we bring to mind that the Jesus we worship is Mercy to all who embrace His love. Never be afraid to turn to Jesus’ Mercy. This is most completely lived out in the Sacrament of Confession. There the mercy forgives our sins and frees us from our past. What a great Savior we have!

There have been so many beautiful events surrounding our Easter preparations and celebrations. The beautiful decorations in the church, the liturgies, music, and liturgical ministers. To all who helped in the Holy Week and Easter Liturgies, I want to thank you all.

CHRIST IS RISEN…HE IS TRULY RISEN!

In Jesus, our Resurrected Lord, Fr. Bob

On Holy Saturday morning, Fr. Bob blessed baskets of Easter food in celebration of Święconka, one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions for that day.

The Second Sunday of Easter | April 7, 2024

In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of Doubting Thomas. May we learn to put all of our faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Sunday of Divine Mercy

THIS SUNDAY APRIL 7TH

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 12:00 Noon Mass.

Three Consecutive Holy Hours: 1:00-2:00pm 2:00-3:00pm 3:00-4:00pm (Join in any one).

Closing Benediction at 4:00pm.

Jesus’ Message of Mercy is summarized as ABC:

A- Ask for God’s Mercy

B- Be merciful to others

C- Completely trust in God’s mercy.

The Five Elements of the Message are summarized as FINCH:

F- Feast of Divine Mercy

I- Image of Divine Mercy

N- Novena of Divine Mercy

C- Chaplet of Divine Mercy

H- Hour of Mercy

We wish to feature the Chaplet of Divine Mercy this year. Jesus revealed it to Sr. Faustina as a powerful prayer He wants everyone pray. Sr. Faustina was interceding in her own words about a dire situation – to no avail. Then the Lord gave her the words of the chaplet, and as she began to pray those words the hand of the ‘angel of punishment’ was stayed! The Lord directed her to pray in those words, and to teach others to do the same.

“Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you…Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death…When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior…Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy…Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will” (Diary, 687, 1541, 1731).

The Chaplet can be prayed anytime, anywhere. The Lord also asked that it be recited as a novena over the 9 days before the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday). We can pray it for our own personal intentions, for others, for the Lord’s intentions. “By this novena [of chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796).

HAPPY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! May the Divine Mercy ever bless you and yours! And may you ever come to Him with the vessel of Trust – and draw!

The Chaplet of Mercy

Recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner:

First of all, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe in God.

On the Our Father Beads, say the following words:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the Hail Mary Beads, say the following words:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

In conclusion, recite these words three times:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

1 John 5:1-6: “In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is thins, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.” Let us all have faith in God and faith in one another. Jesus tells us to love one another and to obey his commandments. Take a leap of faith, and trust God to nourish your relationship. Sign up for a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience and you will learn the tools to transform your marriage. Monday, April 8th - Solemnity of the Annunciation of Our Lord

The Solemnity of the Annunciation of Our Lord is normally celebrated on March 25th, but was moved this year due to the liturgical precedence of Holy Week and the Octave of Easter. The story of the Annunciation is recounted in St. Luke’s Gospel in the first chapter, and describes the news given to Mary by the angel Gabriel that she was to become the mother of the Incarnation of God.

“Hail, thou who art highly favored. The Lord is with thee.”

This is the origin of the “Hail Mary” prayer of the Most Holy Rosary. This feast day calls to mind Our Lady’s YES to God’s will for her life, a moment that changed the course of salvation for the human race.

In celebrating this great Marian feast, let us ask Mary to guide and strengthen all people in embracing God’s plan for their lives by responding with her spirit of humility and complete surrender to God’s will for their lives.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in the midst of us and says: “Peace be with you!” During Mass we turn to each other and say “Peace be with you!” As you put your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul box you say “Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

The Origin of the Divine Mercy Chaplet

In the 1930s, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska, a humble and kind Polish nun, and revealed to her the depths of His mercy. St. Faustina entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925, but she passed away just thirteen years later from tuberculosis in 1938.

Throughout her life of holiness, she continually received revelations from Jesus and diligently wrote down what He told her in her diary. St. Faustina was canonized by St. (Pope) John Paul II on April 30, 2000.

In 1935, an angel appeared to St. Faustina, and she heard the call to pray for mercy. The next day, Christ appeared and urged her to pray the Chaplet herself and with others at the hour of death. She wrote down this revelation in her diary:

Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this Chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. -St. Faustina’s Diary

We pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet for mercy — in our own lives and in our neighbors, too. And we also pray to remind ourselves that we must rely on God; we must recognize our weakness and replace our anxieties and worries with abounding trust in God. We pray so that we might honestly live out the words “Jesus, I trust in You.”

Those who sincerely say ‘Jesus, I trust in You’ will find comfort in all their anxieties and fears … There is nothing more man needs than Divine Mercy – that love which is benevolent, which is compassionate, which raises man above his weakness to the infinite heights to the holiness of God. -Saint (Pope) John Paul II (Krakow, Poland – June 7, 1997)

The Chaplet may be prayed at any time, but our Lord specifically told St. Faustina to recite it as a novena during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy (the first Sunday after Easter.)
