From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” ( John 18:37)
How do we as Americans understand the kingship of Jesus in our lives? We fought a war to rid ourselves of monarchy. And while there have been some kings and queens who have acted in justice and mercy towards their people, we cannot ignore the image of those who have abused power. Well, the Jesus we honor is not a king who rules through power and force; rather, His authority comes when He is welcomed into the hearts of men and women. Our hearts become the throne of Jesus. It is when Jesus comes into our hearts that we can truly see the way that Christ wants to rule as our King. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus “loves us and has freed us from our sins by His Blood.” He is the one who goes looking for those who are lost, feeling alone, hurt; and when He fnds them, He brings them back to Himself. Te Messiah is a Shepherd King who sufered for us. He has come to those whose hearts are flled with compassion toward those who need Him most.
Te Gospel, while building on this image, reminds us of another role of Jesus as King of the Universe. Tis universal kingship is that of the voice of truth. At the end of time, we will stand before God and give account of our lives. We know that it is faith in Jesus alone that saves us. But proclaiming Jesus as our Lord and Savior demands from us a response. Tat response is how well we have loved. Te Gospels remind us that whatever we do to those in most need we do for Jesus Himself. So the question posed to us is how open are our lives to those most in need? When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort those in sorrow, do we see in them the face of Jesus? If we can see in them the face of Jesus, it changes the heart by which we give. We then see and understand that those in need deserve more than “our leftovers” or those things we don’t want or would never wear. Tey deserve what we would give to Jesus Himself. In embracing this mindset with an open heart, we now have the possibility to ofer to those who have been so often “expected” to accept what is second best and return to them their God-given dignity. Each act of kindness and mercy we do in the Name of Jesus not only fulflls the commands of faith, but also proclaims to the world the King we follow.
Te “works of faith” are so important to what it means to be a Christian that we are told that, at the end of time, Jesus will separate the sheep (those who act in mercy to the needy) from the goats (those who do not). Te sheep are invited to share the joy of the Father, while the goats…well you know what happens to them! So which group will you be in when Jesus our King comes in glory? Remember, it’s never too late to change and open yourself to the loving Shepherd.
Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. I encourage you to use the four weeks of Advent as a time of deep spiritual preparation for Christmas. Pray each night around your Advent Wreath at home as you light the candles of each week. You can fnd some great prayers and activities online. Make the memories of our faith for your children at home…you won’t regret it.
You are all invited to bring your family Advent Wreaths to Mass next Sunday and place them in the Sanctuary. As the priest blesses the parish wreath, he will also bless those you will use at home.
We are beginning a Garden Club to assist in the beautifcation of our parish grounds. Please see the ad on page 9 of this bulletin for additional information.

CHRIST PANTOKRATOR
On this great solemnity of JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE, celebrated throughout the Catholic Church and with which we bring to an end the Liturgical year, I would like to share with you on the cover of our Parish Bulletin the important mosaic of CHRIST PANTOKRATOR, found in the Cathedral Church of MONREALE, in SICILY, ITALY.
Te Cathedral of Monreale, majestically perched above Palermo in Sicily (Italy), was erected by King William II (1167/71-1189) in a royal park on the site of an earlier Greek church. Te grandeur of the structure and its rich decoration, largely completed by the king’s death in 1189, is a sight to behold. Te church was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, a testament to the grandeur of the faith it represents.
Te interior of the Cathedral is a testament to human skill and devotion, with its spaciousness and rich décor, especially the incredible mosaics covering the upper portions of the walls of the sanctuary and the nave: a surface area of roughly 7.600 square meters! Tese mosaics, containing more than 4,850 pounds of pure gold, were crafted by skilled artisans from Constantinople (today’s Istanbul) in the Byzantine style, making them among the most magnifcent in the world.
Te apse of the Monreale Cathedral is graced by the representation of CHRIST PANTOKRATOR in its halfdome. Tis specifc depiction of Christ, typical of Byzantine art, is rich in symbolism. Te name Pantokrator, derived from the Greek words pas(all) and kràtein(power), means ‘All-powerful,’ a profound insight into the divinity of Christ.
Tis beautiful icon of the Monreale Cathedral shows Christ fully frontal, sternly, and seated on the throne, holding Scripture with his left hand and three fngers of the right hand raised in the gesture of blessing, according to the Orthodox tradition. It’s fascinating to point out that the book is open to John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not wander in darkness.” Te left page of the book has the verse in Latin, and the right page has it in Greek. Te Greek words on the left and right of Christ’s head, IH∑OC XPI∑TOC O ∏ANTOKPATOP, mean “Jesus Christ the Pantocrator, (the Ruler of All).”

On November 27th, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.”
Te Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a Sister of Charity, (St.) Catherine Laboure, numerous times in her convent’s chapel in Paris during 1830. Our Lady warned St. Catherine of wars to come, in 1830, and again in 1860. On November 27th, 1830, Mary appeared standing on a globe. Rays of light shone from her hands, and she explained to St. Catherine that these were the graces that would be given to anyone who asked for them. St. Catherine was shown an image, now familiar to every Catholic as the Miraculous Medal. Mary asked her to have a medal struck after a model of this image, and to spread devotion to this medal. After two years of investigation, approval was given for the medals to be struck and distributed. So many stories of healings quickly circulated that the medal soon became known as “miraculous.” Te chapel, where St. Catherine experienced her visions, is located at the mother house of the Daughters of Charity in Paris. Te incorrupt bodies of both St. Catherine Labouré and Saint Louise de Marrillac (a co-founder of the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul), are interred in the chapel.
A New Ministry at St. Mary’s: GARDEN CLUB
As many parishioners know, our now-retired Facilities Manager, Vincent Hartley, established and maintained the beautiful seasonal plantings and outdoor decor around our church buildings. Fr. Bob would now like to start a Garden Club to offer parishioners with “green thumbs” the opportunity to select, organize, plant, and maintain garden areas around the church. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Operations, Rob Cammarata, at 516-627-0385, ext 1037 or email him at rcammarata@stmary.ws.

Wall of Honor Created to Celebrate Our Veterans
In commemoration of Veterans Day, our St. Mary’s Middle School Service Club, a special elective offered during recess for students–unveiled a heartfelt Wall of Honor in Immaculata Hall dedicated to our Veterans. Students from all grades joined together to read the names, pray, and honor those who have served. It was inspiring to see our community come together, remembering the sacrifices made by our heroes. We are deeply grateful to the Service Club for their heartfelt and meaningful tribute. Thank you for your dedication and hard work!
Senior Shepherds Share their Experiences
Before the TACHS Exam was administered earlier this month for entrance into Catholic high schools, our St. Mary’s High School Senior Shepherds had the opportunity to visit our Middle School and meet the 8th-grade students. The Shepherds, who serve as role models for their community in faith and academics, talked about their high school experience, mental health tips for testing day, and exam preparation. High School Principal Gerard Buckley, in a role of inspiration and motivation, also had the pleasure of addressing the class with his words of wisdom and excitement for their future.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, child, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

SAINT MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL
Catholic Highlights of Spain Fundraising Raffle
St. Mary’s High School is excited to be bringing 23 students to Spain on a Pilgrimage in February 2025. Several faculty members will chaperone our students as they experience the religious and classical highlights of Spain, seeing various sites in Madrid, Avila, Toledo, Granada and Seville. We are happy to welcome our new Campus Minister, Mr. Brieg Bevilacque, as he joins us on his first pilgrimage with the students.
In order to help offset the cost of the trip, St. Mary’s High School is hosting a Fundraising Raffle. There will be one grand prize of $500, and a second place prize of $200. Each ticket is $20, and the drawing will take place January 31st.
Please consider buying a raffle and helping fund this amazing opportunity for our students. Look for our tables after all Masses on Dec. 7 and 8! Thank you!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
