A Refection by Father Raphael
REFLECTION FOR THE 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
THEME: AN INVITATION TO THE HOLY EUCHARIST AS WISDOM
Our frst reading from the Book of Proverbs 9:1-6 is a personifcation of wisdom as a lady of high status who sets a banquet and invites guests to table. In this reading, wisdom is found in a house of seven pillars. Tat is the frst observation. Te house represents the universe and the seven pillars correspond to the seven days of creation. Tis number represents completeness and perfection. Tus, wisdom is found in the universe complete and perfect, lacking nothing.
Te second observation is the meal which is set before the guests. It includes wine (the fruit of the vine) and meat (animal product): plant and animal for food. So, the gift of wisdom provides man dominion over the entirety of creation. Tis is what true wisdom assigns man: authority over creation. Man is; therefore, not a slave to created things. He must dominate it. He must master it. Te meals represent the Eucharist we are always invited to eat.
Te third observation is where wisdom calls from: it is from the highest point of the city. Te invitation is to the ignorant (the young and the inexperienced person) to choose the path that leads to wisdom. Tat is the food that leads to life. Any other path or food will lead to death. Terefore, to enter the home of wisdom is turn away from the path of foolishness and error and walk in the path of God’s truth. Similarly, the second reading of today draws our attention to this invitation.
In the second reading, from the Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 5:15-20, Paul invites us to the path of wisdom and not foolishness, to the Spirit and not to drunkenness. We need the sense of urgency, wisdom, to keep our standards high, act wisely, and do good whenever we can. Wisdom will lead us to that long-lasting happiness in the spirit. Terefore, we must submit ourselves daily to the Spirit leading us to constantly to draw wisdom from the Eucharist.
Te Gospel continues our refection from John 6:51-58. John Chapter 6, read on the last three Sundays, reaches a high point today with Jesus’ Eucharistic discourse. At this point, there is the transition from Jesus as God’s self-revelation (the bread of life) to Christ as the Eucharistic bread: “My fesh for the life of the world.”
Te comparison between the two tables also continues in a most subtle manner; the table of the Jews and the table of Christians. Te frst and foremost meal of the Jews is the Passover. Tis meal is the meal in which every Jew must eat of the fesh of the lamb and have the blood marking the lintels on the door posts. Closely linked to this Passover meal (Flesh and Blood) is bread; the unleavened bread. Tese elements of fesh, blood, and bread form the principal elements of the Passover celebration.
However, Jesus now refers each of these three elements to Himself. He is the living bread; His fesh is the real food and His blood is the real drink. Jesus Himself is now the Passover of the Jews. So, Jesus is inviting his listeners to move from the table of their ancestors to the table that He provides. Only in Jesus is true life communicated and that is obtained by eating the fesh and drinking the blood that He gives.
If the frst reading is an invitation to shun the pagan table of folly and to dine at the Jewish table of wisdom, the Gospel reading is then an invitation of a change of tables from the Jewish Passover to the Christian Eucharist. It is in the Eucharist that we fnd the true wisdom. We should not let anything become more important than our search for God’s wisdom. “For the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). Te satisfaction wisdom brings lasts forever; hence the Eucharist. God is the source of all wisdom, instructing and guiding us on the path of life. Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, leading us in all wisdom.
Te Eucharist is our pledge of eternity. Christian wisdom avoids loose conduct or debauchery (second reading). Te Eucharist is our source of strength for the journey. May we always be blessed with wisdom each day we encounter the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. I, therefore, invite you to participate in the Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction every Monday as stated in this bulletin (see page 12).
Stay blessed, Father Raphael

Tursday, August 22nd - Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Te Tradition of the Queenship of Mary is found in Holy Scripture. Te mother of a king is highly honored and respected in many Old Testament stories. Te Angel Gabriel proclaimed to Mary at the Annunciation that her child would inherit the throne of King David, and rule forever. When visiting her cousin Elizabeth soon after, Mary is called the “mother of my Lord.”
Our Lady shares in the kingship of her Son, Jesus. Te “Hail, Holy Queen” (“Salve Regina”) prayer dates to the 11th century.
Tis feast was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1954, as a follow-up to the feast of Mary’s Assumption. Te pope stated that as “Queen of Heaven,” Mary deserves the title as the Mother of God, her intercession to God, and her close association with Jesus’s work for the redemption of souls.
May the Virgin Mary, crowned Queen, intercede for us… that we may imitate her in faithfully fulflling God’s will on earth, to join her one day in the heavenly Jerusalem. In every situation of our life, let us invoke her with trust: ‘Queen of all saints, pray for us!’ - Pope St. John Paul II

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that “Whoever eats my fesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” As we know, our loving God cannot be seen by our eyes, but only experienced through loving people. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group
A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.
The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.
The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Te Real Presence of Jesus St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)
Te whole world should tremble and heaven rejoice, when Christ, the Son of the living God, is present on the altar in the hands of the priest. What wonderful majesty! What stupendous condescension! O sublime humility! O humble sublimity! Tat the Lord of the whole universe, God and the Son of God, should humble himself like this and hide under the form of a little bread for our salvation. Look at God’s condescension, my brothers, and pour out your hearts before him, humble yourselves that you may be exalted by him.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
O Jesus, present in the Sacrament of the Altar, teach all nations to serve you with a willing heart, knowing that to serve God is to reign. May your sacrament, O Jesus, be light to the mind, strength to the will, joy to the heart. May it be the support for the weak, the comfort for the sufering, the wayfaring bread of salvation for the dying, and, for all, the pledge of future glory.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.
The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.
In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.

During Mass the priest changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. He uses the same words that Jesus did at the Last Supper. “This is my body. This is my blood.” When you receive the holy Eucharist, Jesus lives inside you. You live in Jesus. His being with you will help you say, “No,” to evil and “Yes,” to good.
