From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“But do not have love, then I am nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:3) In our Catholic faith we hear so much about love and the challenge to be loving people. Sometimes, it may seem that the word love becomes so overused that the profoundness of its significance can be lost to us. Even what love is can be drowned out by the various meanings we give to it. But here is St. Paul spelling out pretty clearly what love is in the context of faith. Love is not a warm fuzzy feeling, but rather a dynamic power that calls us to action. St. Paul tells us that love is working for what is right. It is a force that doesn’t take pleasure in the failings of others, but works for righteousness. It doesn’t cut down; it builds up. Love can be described as wanting and willing what is truly best for another human being. Easier said than done for most of us, I think. Yet that is what is expected of us. So how do we take these profound thoughts of St. Paul and make them more than mere words, but a force by which we live? We look to the Old Testament today where the prophet Jeremiah is commanded by God to “Gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you. They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you.” Love, as described by St. Paul, is the power by which we have the strength and knowledge to bear truth and hope to a wanting world. Like Jeremiah, we may, at times, lose hope, but God gives us His promise that even though people may “fight against us,” if we remain in the truth, “they will never overcome us.” We know that the work for justice so often goes unrewarded. At times, it may feel like it falls on deaf ears. Added to that is the difficulty of speaking the truth to the people we know. As we hear in the Gospel, “no prophet is accepted in his own country (town).” How often have we felt ineffectual when speaking about Jesus to our own families or friends? They may pick out our faults or failings and use them as the premise to ignore our words. But again, that should not let us loose heart...we have been given a pledge and a promise from Jesus to remain faithful and not to lose heart. All is accomplished in God’s time, not our own. So our job is to continue to live and preach as we have been commanded. It is that faithfulness that springs out of our desire for all to know Jesus that love is truly found and lived. That is all that is expected of us...to remain faithful to what has been entrusted to us. Difficult, yes, but surely possible in the power of Jesus! The power by which we should live this is outlined in the attribute of Mercy called for by Our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Compassion and love springs forth as the power of God. Read St. Paul’s letter and learn the power of love. Jeremiah’s extoling us to stay faithful in the midst of opposition can be related, as many of you remember, to the Bill for Late Term Abortion in our state. A bill that was “celebrated” by some in our Legislature. This new bill goes way beyond the protection of Roe vs. Wade. It allows, in some instances, an abortion as late as the due date of the child within the womb. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Metropolitan and Archbishop of New York, called this bill “horrendous and grisly.” He asked that we not celebrate being the “abortion state.” Medical science now tells us that the child within the womb feels pain as well as hears and responds to stimuli. Jeremiah relates the words of God in our first reading: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” We must continue to stand up and pray for the respect and sanctity of all human life, especially the voiceless in our society. No matter where you stand on this issue, celebrating the signing of this bill with a standing ovation seems to me to be callous and cold. Many, many women who have made the difficult decision to have an abortion did not “celebrate” that moment. It is usually a difficult and emotional decision. We need to deepen our prayers that this law will be repealed and that this malignancy does not extend to other states. NEVER forget to pray for those women and men who have experienced abortion, that they come to healing in the merciful God. If you know anyone who suffers from the posttraumatic emotional effects of an abortion, our Diocese offers a journey of healing called “Project Rachel.” You should call the Diocese and ask for the office of Project Rachel (516-678-5800). Please know I am here for anyone who needs that healing...myself and the other priests always want to be minsters of the Mercy of God. I know you join me in thanking Fr. Jude for his priestly presence these past six years. We have all benefited from his deep spirituality, his humble presence, his dedication to the causes of life, and his prayerful demeanor. Let us wish him well as he returns home and that God may grant him many more years. Ad Multos Anos! In Jesus, Fr. Bob

We are delighted to report that our Parish Blood Drive, held on January 23rd, was a wonderful success! Eighty nine pints of whole blood were collected and were quickly dispatched to hospitals across Long Island. As you know, each pint has the potential to help four individuals. Since, at this time, Covid has taken such a devastating toll on blood donations, this was a tremendous accomplishment . It is the largest amount that has been collected in the past twenty years!. We sincerely thank all those who chose to give the gift of life.

Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel The Church as the Mystical Body of Christ The greatest obstacle for the Church today, in my opinion, is the Church herself. Many in my own generation have left the Church, not because they no longer believe in Christ, but they no longer believe in the Church. When I was in Stony Brook, I asked many Christians what church they belonged to and they would say, “none.” The emphasis for them was on a personal relationship with Christ without any need of a larger or institutional community. To the American spirit, which is hyper-individualistic, this is very attractive. It has all the benefits of spirituality without the historical baggage of an institution. This is all summarized by the popular phrase “Spiritual, but not religious.” However, I argue that Jesus, from the beginning, envisioned a hierarchical Church which is both human and mystical. St. Paul persecuted and killed the early Christians. When Paul was on the road to Damascus, he had this vision of Jesus who said to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4). What a strange question! Jesus does not say why are you persecuting my followers; he says why are you persecuting me! It reminds us of Jesus’ famous sermon of judgment in Matthew 25. The righteous are saved because Jesus said that when he was hungry, thirsty, and naked, they gave him food, water and clothing. The righteous asked, when was it Lord that we did this? Jesus responds, “Truly, I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:4). Jesus reveals that there is a mystical bond between himself and the Church. We have a responsibility to know Jesus and a responsibility to have a relationship with the Church because Jesus and the Church are one.
“I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church” The Early Church and the Creed testify that the Church has four marks. It is one, holy, catholic and apostolic. What do these four marks teach us? When St. Joan of Arc was on trial, she was asked about the nature of the Church and she said, “About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they’re just one thing, and we shouldn’t complicate the matter” (Quoted in Barron, 151). The Church is one, because God is one and she is the instrument of gathering the sheep into his flock. The word Church comes from the Greek word, ekklesia. Barron writes, “It is derived from two terms: ek (from) and kalein (to call). Hence, an ekklesia is a group that has been called out from something into something else, that has been set apart” (Barron, 151). We are being called out of the world and into the Church. Jesus says, “I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world” (John 17:14). The world, which is characterized by selflove, is filled with sin which separates the human race from God. The Church is called to unite the human family in the name of Jesus. The Church is holy. This might seem hard to believe. How can the Church be holy and, at the same time, sponsored the inquisition, and been guilty of covering up sexual abuse by her own priests? Looking at the Church’s history, we see great manifestations of her unholiness. Besides her public scandals, there is still the reality of every Christian’s own struggle with sin. Bishop Barron writes, “Every single person up and down the centuries who has ever been a member of the Church (with the exception of the Blessed Mother) has been a sinner” (Barron, 159). The doctrine of original sin reveals the ugliness and dysfunction of humanity from which the Church is, by no

Reflections on the Creed (con’t.) means, immune. The holiness of the Church is not dependent on her members, but rather on the Holy Spirit. The Church is the means by which God communicates his grace and holiness to the world through the sacraments. The Church is filled with Peters and Judases, with broken people who betray and seek God’s mercy. The Church is also filled with the Holy Spirit. It was true in the beginning, it is true now. The third mark of the Church is her catholicity. The word “catholic” comes from the Greek term kata holos which would translate as something like universal or all embracing (Barron, 160). The Church calls her members out from the world, but it does not discard all that is good from the world. To be catholic does not mean to adopt a European identity. Throughout the centuries, the Church has embraced cultures from Europe, South America, Africa, etc. The great basilicas come from Roman Civilization. The vibrant Church in Africa has assimilated their culture into their own liturgies and devotions. The Church is meant to encompass the whole world and incorporate all that is good, true, and beautiful from every corner of the world. final mark of the Church is apostolic. Bishop Barron writes, “The one, holy, and catholic Church is grounded in the small band of twelve men whom Jesus called to himself and shaped according to his own mind and heart” (Barron, 163). Jesus specifically appointed twelve men as his closest friends and gave them authority. The Apostles took on the great responsibility to evangelize the world, and govern the followers of Christ. Were the twelve apostles the smartest and most morally upright men? Not exactly. What is true of the Apostles is true of all the bishops who have succeeded them. Bishop Barron explains, “Thomas Aquinas was a greater theologian than any bishop of his time; Mother Teresa served the poor more effectively and dramatically than any bishop of her time. But it does mean that the successors of the Apostles play a refereeing and supervisory role in the Church” (Barron, 164). The Church is both human and divine with a complicated history and a mystical reality. The response to the Church’s scandals is not to run away, but to love her even more. During the Civil War, the response of President Lincoln was not to abandon the South and its scandalous system of slavery, but rather, at all costs, to fight for the unity of the country. If we truly love Jesus, our response is to fight for what he loves and Jesus loves his Church. We are called to fight and challenge the Church and to help gather the world into the loving arms of the Father.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence, and contempt, behold us prostrate before You, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which Your loving Heart is everywhere subjected. Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask Your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow you, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their Baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of Your law. We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against You; we are determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in indecent dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holy days, and for the shocking blasphemies uttered against You and your Saints. We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Your Vicar on earth and Your priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of Your divine love, and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which You have founded. Would that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of Your divine honor, the satisfaction You once made to Your Eternal Father on the cross and which You continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of Your Virgin Mother and all the saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of Your grace, for all neglect of Your great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past. Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity. We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending You and to bring as many as possible to follow You.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to You, that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit You live and reign, forever and ever. Amen.
