A Refection by Father Anthony

THE EUCHARIST FULFILLS GOD’S PROMISES

Today’s Liturgy of the Word weaves together various themes from the Old Testament to unveil Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and King of Israel - the Lord who has come to nourish and sustain His people.

Notice the parallels between todays’ First Reading and the Gospel Reading:

• Both Elisha in the Old Testament and Jesus in the New Testament face a crowd of hungry people with only a few “barley” loaves.

• We hear similar words about how impossible it will be to feed the crowd with so little.

• In both stories, bread is miraculously multiplied. Tis symbolizes God’s abundant provision and satisfying the hungry with food left over. It also reminds us of the Eucharist, where a small amount of bread and wine is transformed into the abundant presence of Christ.

In the First Reading, the prophet Elisha feeds God’s people in the wilderness. Tis event foreshadowed the Eucharist, where Jesus feeds His people with His Body and Blood.

Te miraculous feeding in today’s Gospel Reading, then, is a sign that God has begun to fulfll His promise, which we sing of in today’s Psalm—to give His people food in due season and satisfy their desire (cf. Psalm 81:17). Jesus himself indicates that the Eucharist fulflls God’s promise. In fact, he takes the loaves in his hands, gives a blessing of thanksgiving (literally, “eucharist”) and then distributes that same bread to the people.

He would repeat these three actions later, at the Last Supper, when He instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and instituted the Catholic priesthood.

Te leftover twelve baskets of bread, one for each of the Apostles, further symbolize the Eucharist’s connection to the Last Supper.

All these signs point us to the Eucharist, where the Church founded on the Apostles continues to feed us with His living bread.

Finally, today’s Epistle (2nd Reading) reminds us that we are nourished and united with the Lord in the Eucharist. Tis unity and communion with the Lord in the Eucharist should inspire us to live lives that refect the greatness of this calling.

Sunday, July 28th - World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Te Catholic Church celebrates the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly each year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus’ grandparents. Tis year that day is July 28. Pope Francis has chosen a line from Psalm 71: “Do not cast me of in my old age” as the theme for the 2024 celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Te choice was “meant to call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throwaway culture. By cherishing the charisms of grandparents and the elderly, and the contribution they make to the life of the Church, the World Day seeks to support the eforts of every ecclesial community to forge bonds between the generations and to combat loneliness,” said a statement made by the Vatican for the occasion.

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Gospel, Jesus feeds the multitude with just fve barley loaves and two fsh. Trust in Jesus!

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Hospitality: As St. Paul reminds us today in the second reading, live your life with humility, gentleness and patience. Let the actions and words in your life attract others to the Church.

Te collection for Sunday, July 23, 2023 amounted to $21,761.00.

Saturday, August 3rd, is the First Saturday of the Month

Please consider attending the 9:00 AM Mass at St. Mary’s that day in accordance with the First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady. Te fve First Saturdays Devotion is a request made by Our Lady of Fatima in her appearances to the three children there. Te Blessed Mother promised to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all who, as an act of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on the frst fve Saturdays of consecutive months:

1. Go to confession

2. Receive Holy Communion

3. Say fve decades of the Rosary

4. Keep Mary company for ffteen minutes meditating on the ffteen mysteries of the Rosary**

In 2002, Pope John Paul II instituted the Luminous Mysteries, stating “the Rosary is at heart a Christocentric prayer” and it had an “important place in his spiritual life during his youth.”

**We now keep Mary company for 20 minutes meditating on the 20 mysteries of the Rosary.**

Te sacramental confession can be received within eight days either before or after the reception of Communion, provided the communicant is in a state of grace for Communion. Reception of Holy Communion must take place within 24 hours of the frst Saturday. Te reception of Communion need not be part of a Mass.

In Tanksgiving for Blessings Unknown

God our protector, God our hope, We turn to you in times of hardship, But in our struggles and fears, We often forget to thank you For the grace you have given us to overcome hardship. For countless unknown blessings, … we give you thanks.

For walking with us as we have prepared for storms and for sharing our joy when disaster is averted … … we give you thanks.

For wars that never happened, where tempers fared but reason and mercy prevailed … … we give you thanks.

For the crops that have fourished, and the child who now knows nothing of hunger … … we give you thanks.

For all the nights we spent in fear, but by your grace saw mornings flled with hope … … we give you thanks.

For all the joys of this year, Te moments when light shone through the darkness When angels stood triumphant When we saw past our sin and strife And glimpsed beyond the veil At what the kingdom of God truly could be … … we give you thanks.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

High School Readiness Course Prepares Students for Success

Earlier this month, more than 30 members of the Saint Mary’s High School Class of 2028 attended a summer course to teach them how to have a successful freshman year. Topics covered included study and organizational skills, familiarization with the school, and problem-solving for typical challenges facing freshmen. One of the highlights of the course was the opportunity for incoming first-year students to meet their principal, Mr. Buckley, and other staff members, which underscores our school's commitment to student engagement. Best of all, the students ended the course by gaining more friends than they had come in with! These St. Mary’s Gaels are off to a terrific start, and we look forward to seeing more members of the Class of 2028 during Freshman Camp in August.
