Farewell Father Dominik

In June 2021, the Church and Schools of Saint Mary received a tremendous blessing as a young, newly ordained priest named Fr. Dominik Wegiel was assigned to our community.

St. Mary’s was no stranger to Fr. Dominik. In 2017, our Knights of Columbus Fr. William A. Daly Council #2122 and Don Bosco Squires had the privilege of meeting him when they raised funds to support the Seminary of St. Joseph and those studying for the priesthood. Fast forward to June 23, 2021, when Fr. Dominik, now a newly ordained priest, officially began his assignment. He celebrated his first Mass at St. Mary’s on June 27, 2021, showering blessings upon the parishioners, family, and friends who gathered to celebrate the Eucharist and welcome him with open arms.

Since he arrived in Manhasset, Fr. Dominik’s ministry has left a lasting impact on our community. He demonstrated the tenets of our Catholic faith while shaping his priestly ministry through his joyful, loving service to our parish and schools. Most notably, working with students from the Schools of St. Mary who wished to fulfill their Sacramental journey or become Catholics, Fr. Dominik shared his love of God and helped prepare them for their Sacraments. From our elderly to our youngest learners on campus, “Fr. Dominik served from the heart and became part of the fabric of life at St. Mary’s. His prayerful celebration of Holy Mass and his insightful preaching has inspired many. On a personal note, he has been a wonderful addition to the life of the Rectory. His humor added life and laughter to our meals together,” noted Fr. Bob.

Fr. Dominik’s first priestly assignment was like a diamond with many facets. On the heels of a global pandemic, he immersed himself in his daily work and grew in service, touching the hearts, minds, and spirits of all he encountered. These facets included preaching the Gospel, visiting with the sick, introducing pre-schoolers to the joy of praying the Rosary, teaching our youth in Religious Education and our Schools, and celebrating weddings, funerals, and baptisms—all for the glory of God’s kingdom. We cannot forget his spiritual leadership during pilgrimages to Italy and Greece, where he introduced our high schoolers to the rich history of our Catholic faith and the beautiful landmarks and churches along the way, where he celebrated daily Mass for the pilgrims.

As Fr. Dominik prepares to embark on a new chapter in his priestly journey, we cannot help but feel a profound sense of loss. Fr. Bob noted, “His departure is undoubtedly a sad moment for our parish and schools, but we are grateful to Almighty God for his time with us. Let us pray for a continued fruitful ministry in his new assignment.”

Thank you, Fr. Dominik, for all the gifts you shared with us during your ministry. As you continue your priestly journey, know that you carry the love and support of our community. We are confident that your future endeavors will be filled with blessings and success. May all who seek Jesus find their path through your vocation!

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Praise Our Creator

“Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; cry out to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with a song of praise, joyfully sing out our psalms. For the Lord is the great God, the great king over all gods, Whose hand holds the depths of the earth; who owns the tops of the mountains. The sea and dry land belong to God, who made them, formed them by hand.

Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us. For he is our God, we are the people he shepherds, the sheep in his hands.”

— Psalm 95:1-7

Praise the Lord Our Refuge

“Blessed be the Lord, who has heard the sound of my pleading. The Lord is my strength and my shield, in whom my heart trusts. I am helped, so my heart rejoices; with my song I praise him.

Lord, you are a strength for your people, the saving refuge of your anointed. Save your people, bless your inheritance; pasture and carry them forever!”

— Psalm 28:6-9

Praise the Lord in Times of

Trouble

“My wanderings you have noted; are my tears not stored in your flask, recorded in your book?

My foes turn back when I call on you. This I know: God is on my side. I praise the word of God, I praise the word of the Lord. In God I trust, I do not fear. What can man do to me?” — Psalm 56:9-12

Praise Our Mighty God

“You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; chant the praises of the Lord. Who rides the heights of the ancient heavens, Who sends forth his voice as a mighty voice?

Confess the power of God, whose majesty protects Israel, whose power is in the sky. Awesome is God in his holy place, the God of Israel, who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!” — Psalm 68:33-36

“May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord be glad in his works! Who looks at the earth and it trembles, touches the mountains and they smoke! I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live.

May my meditation be pleasing to him; I will rejoice in the Lord. May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, my soul! Hallelujah!” — Psalm 104:31-35

2023-24 Season Ends with Generous Gifts to the Schools and Parish

Our Closing Mass was held on Thursday, June 13th. It was our last official Mass of the season with Father Bob and Father Dom Concelebrating. Lunch followed in the Marian Room. We had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Edward Short, VP of Development, speak about the scholarship monies the Rosarians have donated in the past.

Father Bob was presented with three checks from the Rosary Society as follows:

Our Lady of Fatima Scholarship for the High School in the amount of $4,000.00

Our Lady of the Rosary Scholarship for the Elementary School in the amount of $4,000.00

Parish General Fund in the amount of $3,000.00

It is through the generosity of the Rosarians that we are able to provide the above monies to support our schools and our parish.

Thursday, June 27th - Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Just as the Child Jesus fled into the arms of his Mother when he was frightened, so too do we flee into the arms of our Blessed Mother with child-like confidence whenever fear envelopes our hearts. Just as the Virgin Mother consoled and comforted her Divine Child, so too does she console and comfort us, her spiritual children, in our afflictions. We can always come to her in our time of need and receive her help.

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke thy most powerful name, which is the safeguard of the living and the salvation of the dying.

O Purest Mary, O Sweetest Mary, let thy name henceforth be ever on my lips. Delay not, O Blessed Lady, to help me whenever I call on thee, for, in all my needs, in all my temptations I shall never cease to call on thee, ever repeating thy sacred name, Mary, Mary.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In the Gospel today, Jesus calms the sea and then asks the disciples “Why are you lacking in faith.” In our life’s journey, we also must learn to believe in God’s presence and to trust in his care. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to continue show God’s love and care to others by assisting families, providing food and assistance with utility and rent bills.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY, MANHASSET HISTORY ARCHIVES PROJECT

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.

As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.

If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:

Twelth Sunday In Ordinary Time

2 Corinthians 5:14-17:The love of Christ impels us. He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. As a couple, we can be transformed and become a new creation in Christ. Check out a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience today. It will help your relationship and teach you tools to love one another. This will transform your marriage. What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
