We celebrate Baptism at 1:30 PM on the second Sunday of the month and at 12:30 PM on the fourth Saturday of the month as scheduled. Please call the Parish Office at least one month in advance to see if a date is available and to arrange to fill out pre-baptismal paperwork. New parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation session held once every month. Those chosen as sponsors for Baptism should lead lives in harmony with the Catholic faith and the role of Godparent.”

At least six months before you plan to be married and before you make arrangements for the reception, please make an appointment with one of the priests to begin the necessary preparations.

Children’s Education

Saint Mary’s Elementary School offers excellent education in the spirit of the Gospel from grades N, Pre-K to Eighth grade. For information call 627-0184.

The Religious Education Program provides excellent formation in the Catholic Faith for children in public or private schools. Preparation for First Holy Communion and Confirmation requires two years. Classes are held at St. Mary’s for Grades 1 through 5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Opportunities For Prayer

The Church is open Monday to Friday until 8:45 PM, on Saturday until the end of the 5:00 PM Mass, and on Sunday until 6:00 PM so that we may have the opportunity for quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. The Miraculous Medal Novena is said each Monday following the 9:00 AM Mass. Monday to Saturday the Rosary is said following the 9:00 AM Mass. Eucharistic Adoration is held every Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Chapel. On First Saturdays, the Scriptural Rosary is recited following the 9:00 AM Mass.

EXPOSITION AND ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT WITH BENEDICTION is held on Mondays from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Church.

Lent is a special time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Priests are available for confession each Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 4:45 PM in the chapel or by appointment. Call the Parish Office at 627-0385 to make an appointment.

*FAST AND ABSTINENCE - Those who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine are also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means to limit oneself to a single full meal and avoid food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

“Lent is a time when we rediscover that we are our brothers’ keepers, called to be Good Shepherds who protect others from harm and Good Samaritans who cross the road to care for those in need. St. Joseph shows us how. He guarded Mary’s life and reputation against the possibility of death by stoning as a result of her having become pregnant outside of marital intimacy. He protected Jesus and Mary from Herod’s henchmen. He provided for them through his hard work, which was a constant almsgiving done out of love. Pope Leo XIII, commenting on why Pius IX declared St. Joseph patron of the Universal Church, said: ‘The reasons why St. Joseph must be considered the special patron of the Church... chiefly arise from his having been ... in his day the lawful and natural guardian, head and defender of the Holy Family.... It is thus fitting and most worthy of Joseph’s dignity that, in the same way that he once kept unceasing holy watch over the family of Nazareth, so now does he protect and defend with his heavenly patronage the Church of Christ.’

St. Mary’s Students Host Tremendous Food Drive at King Kullen in Manhasset

Students from the 8th grade religious education class and St. Mary’s High School teamed up for a wonderful and impactful food collection at King Kullen this past weekend. They worked hard in the cold with great attitudes to collect enough food to fill our pantry shelves for many weeks to come. It was also fun to see so many of St. Mary’s parishioners donate items outside the store for the effort as well. As always, all food collected for our office goes directly to the underserved population right here in Manhasset. Thank you, kids, for your selfless dedication to this effort and for doing your part to help those in need. Many blessings to you all!

THIS IS MY BODY

The year ending June 30, 2023 has been designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as the first of a three-year National Eucharistic Revival. Our pastor, Fr. Bob, asked me to write a series of articles on the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. - Frank De Lucia

Citing the Council of Trent in the 16th century, the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines Real Presence as follows: “In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.’”

(CCC 1374). In other words, in some mystical way a miracle is performed at every Mass. During the consecration by the Catholic priest, the substance of bread made without yeast and ordinary wine are converted into the actual Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Savior, while they only still appear as ordinary bread and wine.

The Real Presence is a dogmatic truth of the Catholic Church, a truth revealed by God Himself and binding on all Catholics. It was initially revealed in what has come to be known as the Bread of Life Discourse in the gospel of St. John, where Jesus said to His followers outside a temple in Capernaum, “’Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day’…As a result of this,

many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” (John 6:53-54,66). Some many months later, and in answer to the question at Capernaum “How can this man give us [His] flesh to eat?” (John 6:52), Jesus instituted the Eucharist we celebrate today. During the Last Supper, a Passover Seder, Saint Luke records the following: “Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.’ And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.’” (Luke 22:19-20) Note that Jesus did not say that the bread and wine were “like” His

Corinthians, written in the 50s A.D., St. Paul writes “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10:16). Around 110 A.D., St. Ignatius of Antioch writes “I have no taste for corruptible food or for the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ . . . and for drink I desire his blood, which is love incorruptible” (Letter to the Romans 7:3). Justin Martyr, in chapter 66 of his First Apology, written in 151 A.D., states, “For not as common bread nor common drink do we receive these…the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by him…is both the flesh and the blood of that incarnated Jesus.” And finally, St. Irenaeus in 189 A.D. wrote, “[Jesus] has declared the cup, a part of creation, to be his own blood, from which he causes our blood to flow; and the bread, a part of creation, he has established as his own body, from which he gives increase unto our bodies” (Against the Heresies).

Many Protestant denominations do not believe in the Real Presence, and interpret these Bible passages metaphorically rather than literally. However, there is ample evidence that the early Church did in fact believe in the Real Presence as declared by the Catholic Church today. In his First Letter to the

The list of witnesses to belief in the Real Presence in the early Church is too voluminous to list here. However, our brothers in the Eastern, non-Catholic denominations, such as the Eastern Orthodox Church, believe in the Real Presence, demonstrating that the belief goes back to a time when there was only one Church.

In a future bulletin, we will explore the times when God, through grace and charity to the faithful, removed the appearances of the bread and wine in the Eucharist, exposing the true substance of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood, the Soul and Divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

“Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.” (Proverbs 29:17)

Parents today have so many questions about how to parent effectively so their child can develop to the best of his/her potential, with sound, faithfilled, and moral values. and most importantly, with the ability to love. With the many changing norms and with the influence of group think in today’s environment, how does a parent influence their child so he/she will listen and conduct himself in a healthy, productive, faith-filled, and self-directed manner?

Let’s look at the messages that Mary has given us in terms of parenting. Her parenting was one of surrender to the will of God as she was bestowed with God’s grace to handle all the ups and downs, the joys, the sadness, the losses, and the gains of parenting in faith, hope and love. To lose a son or daughter is the most painful loss. A parent is not supposed to bury a child. Journeying with the Lord, you are graced with his blessings, and you will be able to handle your road, as long as you journey with HIM, no matter what the situation.

When you walk with God at your side you will develop the strength to be a “Good Enough Parent” who is imperfect and rears an imperfect child who can learn to be resilient no matter what the situation. You can teach your child that he can learn to call upon God to offer him strength to follow the path of love, discipline,

and productivity in our ever-changing world.

As your child learns resilience, he learns to “bounce forward” as he deals with the challenges of life and develops an “I can do it attitude.” Teaching your child to take healthy risks and believe in himself means there are no negative consequences for who he is and what he does when based on God’s teachings. Teach your child to ask himself before he decides that which he is unsure of: “What would GOD say?” How would HE guide me? You are giving your child a framework and roadmap on how to navigate life and make choices based on GOD’S love. This will strengthen your child/teen to believe in himself and how he acts and thinks, and his sense of self-esteem will grow.

To parent effectively means to model the love of GOD through prayer and practice of your faith and your child will follow. As a parent is present and that is essential (put the phone aside), a parent listens respectfully which means giving your child no matter what the age, eye contact, repeat what he says, so he knows he is heard and then you respond in a loving way. As you state the rules and follow through with loving discipline, the roadmap is further defined.

Loving discipline means to be consistent in directing, supervising, correcting, and modeling appropriate behaviors without judgment. When we judge, our child’s selfesteem plummets, and their resilience becomes compromised. As your child walks in truth with GOD and follows a parent’s rules and values, he will be able to succeed as he sets realistic goals. Being realistic is essential because setting goals that are unattainable leads to unnecessary disappointments and frustrations.

As a child becomes more aware of his relationship with GOD and those around him, disappointments, which are part of life, are dealt with strength and the child can look at what is left and not focus on what is lost. As a result, he develops the strength to rebuild and relearn. Parents enable this faith-filled and resilient coping style by expressing empathy, warmth, safety, and connection, no matter what your child does or says. He knows you have his back, and you will lead with the love of God and consistency of discipline which enables your child to feel connected to you and God. He can learn to transform how he acts, thinks, feels, and loves and the possibilities are endless.

So. as you see, set the model, live the model you talk about with God and Mary at your side. Pray with your child for what he has and the changes he wants to make. See a prayer below.

The holy Season of Lent is a time of spiritual preparation for the celebration of our Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection at Easter, the holiest of days. Through prayer, fasting and works of charity, we draw closer to the Lord, deepen our faith, and prepare for eternal life.

The obligation of abstinence from meat on Fridays of Lent is an important element of the Church’s observance of the penitential nature of this holy season. However, if you choose not to abstain from meat on Friday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day), please substitute some other penance, prayer, and work of charity in its place.
