From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, “If you love Me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)

The call of discipleship is one that seeks the will of God. To discern that will, we have to be open to the presence of God in our lives. A willingness to invite God into our lives demands a response on our part. That response is to live in obedience to God’s will. How often the very word “obedience” can cause us, as Christians in the twenty-first century, to cringe. Obedience is not an attribute that many might see as worthy of embracing. Haven’t we been taught that we create our own destinies...that our actions only affect our personal life? AND, my favorite...well, I am a good person, so I can do it my way. Yet, obedient is what we are called to be. Jesus says in today’s Gospel that if we want to love Him, we must keep His commandments. It is in following the teaching of Jesus and His example that we express that love.

So what do we learn from Sacred Scripture? Of course, there is much that shows us Jesus. But let us go back to recent memory. Six weeks ago, we celebrated the glorious Resurrection of Jesus. A few days before that, we commemorated the death and crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday. The path that led Jesus to that cross was one of total obedience to the will and desire of the Father. The readings that preceded the Crucifixion speak of Jesus’ struggle to accept that will. Even Peter, when he hears Jesus talk about the suffering that awaits Him in Jerusalem, tries to talk Jesus out of going there. I am sure that for one instant Jesus must have thought how easy it would have been for Him to stay away from Jerusalem. But He didn’t, and He utters those powerful words to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane...Not as I will, but as you will.

The first step in accepting Jesus as Lord is willingness to be obedient to His teachings. When we establish the importance of that obedience, then we can move on to more specific teachings. Many of those teachings I am sure we are all familiar with...love, forgiveness, generosity, compassion and, of course, the list continues and changes as we deepen our faith life. BUT it all has to begin with a desire (and yes, sometimes a struggle), to be obedient to the will of the Father and the teachings of Jesus as expressed through the teaching office of the Church. The more we come to know Jesus in prayer and Scripture the more, I think, obedience becomes less of an issue. St. Ignatius of Loyola says it so beautifully: “It is not hard to obey when we love the one whom we obey.” When we fall in love with Jesus as Brother, Messiah, and Friend, it makes sense that we desire and seek out His Will for our lives. Discovering that Will, we strive to follow it.

So in spite of possible misgivings and apprehension over the word obedience, there is a peace that comes from giving our lives to Jesus. We become open to the path that He wants us to walk. When we are walking in obedience the plan and purpose that God has for us, we become free to be what He created us to be. In that freedom to be more like Jesus lies the true path to happiness. But it starts with those words...not as I will, but as You will. Don’t be afraid of giving yourself to Jesus...and don’t, out of fear, water down His Words. His Words are life!

When we look at the world and all that is happening around us, we can rightfully ask and wonder…where is God in all this. Well, maybe He is right next to us, whispering His song of love and hope. Maybe God’s response to our longings becomes clearer when we take the time to get to know Him better. Find the time to spend alone reading the Sacred Scriptures that are sent to you each day, ponder what God is trying to say, and most certainly incorporate it into your everyday life.

This was the last weekend of our beautiful celebrations of First Holy Communion. I am grateful to the teachers in our school and our Religious Education Catechists for all their work in preparing our children for this most important day. A very special thank you to our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, assisted by Ms. Catherine Abbatangelo, for coordinating the First Communion Masses.

In this month of May dedicated to Our Lady, I encourage you to pray the Rosary. Let Mary be the vehicle to lead you to Jesus.

In Jesus, our Risen Lord, and Mary, our Mother, Fr. Bob

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that He will send the Holy Spirit to remain with them and guide them.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Prayer: As Catholics, we should make a habit out of praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance. When we pray to the Spirit, we are asking God to help us make the right decisions in life. If you ever feel stressed or don’t know what to do in your life—ask the Holy Spirit for guidance!

St. Mary’s High School Students Venerate Relic

Saint Mary’s High School students traveled to Rockville Centre for a special Mass that brought schools together from across the Diocese.

OnMonday, May 2, 2023, ten St. Mary’s students represented our school community at the Mass and Veneration of the Relic of Blessed Michael McGivney. Bl. Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, is a central figure in the growth of Catholicism in America, and is on his way to sainthood. The day began with a presentation about his life in the Msgr. Kelly Center at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. Students then venerated the relic in the Cathedral and then attended the celebration of Mass. Proudly, one of our students, Brooke Flannelly ’24, read the prayer of the faithful during the Cathedral Mass. What a beautiful way to learn more about their Catholic faith and participate in the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist with their peers.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments…Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and through us into the hearts of those who are poor.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Clothing Drive Fills a Truck and Our Hearts

After several weeks of planning, on Sunday, May 7, our Spring Clothing Drive bloomed on campus when parishioners, school community families, and friends of St. Mary’s arrived to leave their donations of gently used and new clothing to benefit the Long Island Society of St. Vincent de Paul. It was a beautiful day and a fantastic opportunity to come together and give back to those in need. Our parish SVDP Conference, St. Mary’s Elementary School’s National Junior Honor Society, and the Rosary Society’s Daughters of Mary collaboratively sponsored the event. According to organizer Rosa Stein, the parish SVDP president, “The combined efforts to promote this Clothing Drive resulted in a successful turnout of donors and helped us fill the SVDP truck. The event created an impactful way for all of us to help those who may not have the resources to purchase new items and ultimately will provide dignity to our underserved neighbors.”

Volunteers were on hand to welcome donors and assist with their items. Michelle Tripi, assistant principal for the Elementary School, mobilized students to help before and during the collection. “We gathered to attend the 10:30 AM Mass together and transferred an abundance of donations received at the School during the week from our families. It was great seeing the students in action – interacting with the adult volunteers and assisting those dropping off their items to make the Clothing Drive a success.”

Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers who helped us make a positive impact in our community and beyond. Besides filling the truck, you filled our hearts with your generosity!

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta

Living in and through Discipline: in a Turbulent Environment

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11)

Only to be disciplined. What does that mean? When I think about discipline, I envision a person who can deal with life’s challenges in an emotionally regulated manner. Can you be depended upon, no matter what is happening? Are you a person of your word? Are you kind, considerate, and compassionate to your fellow human being? Do your actions and values align themselves with the definition of discipline with love at the core? Are you able to plan and follow through and sometimes with a price of sacrifice? Are you able to say “No” to yourself and others?

So many questions to think about. Where do you start? Yes, our world seems to be in a flux riddled with change, anger, and more violence than we are used to hearing about or subjected to. Regulating our emotions in the face of these uncertainties is difficult to say the least. Regulating your emotions can be accomplished through prayer, meditation, exercise, relaxing, and listening to music or an integration of all these activities. I like to use prayer as a first line of defense since I can then connect to the love of Jesus, the protection of the Father, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I will share a secret with you. When I sit to write my articles for the

church, I pray to the Holy Spirit for his guidance about what to write. It works!

Physical expression for the mind and body is very important in dealing with the stresses of life. You need to reduce your stress levels, so you can become disciplined in your actions. I know if you are less stressed, you can count on yourself to follow through in that which you commit to and to fulfill your word. The more you are in touch with what you value based on Christ’s teachings, which includes being considerate and compassionate in your actions as Jesus was, the more you can offer those you interact with a sense of attachment and dependability that provides a sense of safety and gentility.

Becoming more introspective, which means knowing who you are and what you value, you will be able to make informed plans with the Holy Spirit as your guide and you will be able to follow through even when the times are difficult. And, most importantly, the ability to say “No” to your lack of conviction and follow through is essential. If you can keep yourself on the path of conducting yourself in accordance with the teachings of Christ, you will be able to say “Yes” when appropriate and “No” when necessary to create a more organized, planned out life based on the teachings in the Bible. As a result, you will be able to interact with yourself and others in a more disciplined manner.

To be an effective parent means to be disciplined in how you approach and teach your child so he/she can become the richest in mind, spirit,

and acquire the love of learning according to the Lord’s Word. As a result, he/she will be able to navigate the challenges present in life and will face and enjoy the successes he/she will experience. You can also say it with your family.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers, Grandmothers, and those who Mother in many ways.

Dear Lord, you provide me with armor every day as I pray to you for the protection of the Holy Spirit as I navigate the known and unknown. Give me the strength to I approach my life and those I touch with loving discipline so I may live according to your Word in kindness and compassion and may be strengthened to deal with the ups and downs of life in protection of the Lord.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

A PENTECOST NOVENA

One of the great and oldest prayers of the Church is below. It was a prayer of longing and anticipation and openness as given by Jesus to His closest followers.

Daily Scriptural Prayer:

At Your Ascension, Jesus, You commanded Your followers not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for The Gift of which the Father has promised, to wait to be clothed from On High. For (as You prophesied) that Your people would receive power when the Holy Spirit would come upon them, and so to be Your witnesses, beginning in Jerusalem, and then forth to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1)

I am Your follower, Lord Jesus. I need Your Gift of the Spirit to be moving in me. I repent of my sins, including any inaction on my part to live fully Catholic, or in any lack of response to Your teachings and promptings for me to spread the Gospel or live out the Faith obediently, as by Your revealed truth. Amen.

Holy Spirit Prayers to use for nine days in a row after the traditional Ascension Thursday (May 18, 2023) up to Pentecost Sunday (May 28, 2023). Pray one prayer of the nine below, daily, consecutively, for the Spirit’s Gift. Pause after the prayer to reflect on its meaning and petition, then conclude with the Final Prayer

Prayer 1 O Lord, Sweet Spirit, as Isaiah 11 prophesied, Christ’ anointing would be seven-fold, with the start being granted as wisdom. Please give me wisdom to see the big picture of life as You see it.

Prayer 2 O Lord, grant me understanding to live out Your holy plan and Your good will for my life.

Prayer 3 Dear Lord, please also enlighten me to exercise right judgment, in my figuring in what is most good and just for each situation of which I come upon, to Glorify Your Name by my actions, and to best bless the community of faith.

Prayer 4 Holy God, grant me knowledge of You and of Your ways, in direction to You, Father, and with knowing Christ Jesus well and His purposes of His Holy Church, and for a mind blessed in Your Spirit to live the Word of God, the Catechism, and an inspired lived-out manner.

Prayer 5 O Lord, united with other Spirit-filled believers in community, may I share the way of courage, showing a conviction to firm purpose of life. May I be not ashamed to honor Jesus, The Eternal Son.

Prayer 6 Holy Spirit, I also petition You to help me to live in piety, as in my being reverent in life, and to all life made in Your Grace. May I sense the sacred in my spirit, by means of prayerful humility, as here.

Prayer 7 Spirit of Christ, so inspire an awe and wonder of the Divine Trinity in me, and light up my whole life. May I have an alive faith to what it is to be a child of God and to be formed within Thy will.

Prayer 8 O God, having asked for the 7-fold Gift, help me so then practice the theological virtues; as in love to be ever strong in me, matching an ardent faith in me as being Your follower, and always led forth in hope with the eternal in mind.

Prayer 9 I pray, dear Lord, that my actions will honor you, so I beg for the moral virtues to grow in me. I pray You help me increase in my being sharp in prudence, balanced in temperance, vigorous in fortitude, and your servant for justice to be done in Your Name.

Holy Spirit Closing Prayer:

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the Fire of Your Love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be (re)created, and You shall renew the face of the earth! O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
