From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“I pray also for those who will believe in me through their word.” (John. 17:20)
We are preparing in our Scriptures for the glorious Solemnity of Pentecost. For the last few weeks in St. John’s Gospel, Jesus is preparing His Disciples for the reception of the Power that will come from on high. One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is unity. Unity in belief and unity in our actions. This unity is not expressed by each of us doing the “same thing,” but is seen as a sharing of hearts. It is an invitation to live and act in the one mind of Jesus. God has blessed each of us with gifts and talents. Each of the gifts we have received is different and unique, and we are called to share them freely with Jesus and His life lived out in the Church. So, as we come to celebrate Pentecost next weekend, think about the gifts Jesus has blessed you with during your life.
The first line of the Gospel, “those who believe in me through their words,” is certainly a way of living the unity that Jesus prays for us. It is for us the believers in Jesus who are called to make a difference in our world. We are not just called to act in kindness and mercy, though those are certainly important attributes. The Scripture is a little more specific: “through their word.” Our words are now compared to the Word of Jesus. We are invited to act, not just in goodness, but also in the WORD. So this means that acts of kindness, mercy, and forgiveness are now part and parcel of the life of a believer. Those “good actions” are now done in the Name and Power of Jesus Christ.
We are reminded that we must provide witness to those around us. This probably doesn’t mean in a pulpit, but certainly in our everyday dealings with those who come into our lives. To live as a witness to those around us can undoubtedly be a more daunting and difficult task. Maybe we can begin by focusing on how well we witness to our family members. It’s easy, at times, to be forgiving to those we do not see very often; the challenge comes with offering that mercy to those we see and deal with each day. Maybe they have hurt us and continue to do so. Our forgiveness should not be based on whether they have sought it or not. It is a gift freely given. Wow, how challenging is that! But that, my dear Sisters and Brothers, is what it means to live by our words.
We profess faith in Jesus, not just as a title, but also as the WORD of God that invites us to a way of living and responding. So our “word” must stem from the WORD of God. So, in all we do and say, we can respond in unity with the heart of Jesus. That heart, which calls us to act in compassion for all God’s people. In a genuine and concrete way, it means a submission of our will to that of the Father. If we become so hardened in what we want/ desire, we can break or weaken that bond of unity Jesus so earnestly prayed for.
As I mentioned, next Sunday is Pentecost. I would like to invite all people to wear something red that day. My hope is that the “external” may truly touch that which is called to be “internal” in our lives. Prepare your hearts during this week for the coming of the Holy Spirit in your own heart.

PSP Committee Aims to “Nourish the Flock” and Relaunches
Guest Speaker Program with Jennifer Hubbard
Our Pastoral Strategic Planning (PSP) Committee reconvened in February after a two-year break caused by COVID. Before the pandemic, the Committee set forth a plan to offer a programming series and organized their first event, a successful presentation featuring evangelist Gus Lloyd, the host of Sirius XM Radio’s morning show “Seize the Day” on the Catholic Channel. The Committee’s goal is again in motion to bring people of strong faith back to St. Mary’s and provide spiritual nourishment to the community.
incredible strength, conviction, and deep faith are examples for anyone facing the toughest challenges.”
At the event’s closing, Muffin Sauvigne felt even stronger about the truly transformative inspiration that led her to suggest bringing Hubbard to St. Mary’s. “If we are always walking with God, He will get us through the darkest of times as well as the joys in life.”
Committee Member Muffin Sauvigne shared how the recent guest speaker was selected. “Jennifer Hubbard was a name I was familiar with as I am a long-time subscriber to the Magnificat. Jenny has been writing monthly reflections in the publication since 2012. Her reflections were always incredibly paralleled with my religious beliefs. Jenny published her book Finding Sanctuary in 2021. After reading it, she uplifted my faith by demonstrating how Christ’s redemptive suffering provides a path of hope, even in the darkest moments of our lives. Her story was one of faith and affirmation, something we could always use.”
With nearly 100 guests in attendance on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Jennifer Hubbard bravely shared her story of losing her six-year-old daughter Catherine Violet, a first grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School, recounting the turn from tragedy to the reinforcement of her Catholic faith. After the presentation, Jennifer happily sat down and engaged in conversation with attendees eager to purchase her book to be autographed.
Parishioner Danielle Cisek attended the event and offered her thoughts. “The word inspiration literally means to be in the Spirit. Clearly, Jennifer Hubbard has been inspired throughout her life’s journey. Faced with such a devastating loss of her little daughter, Jennifer had to make a choice. Either she could succumb to anger and despair or she could embrace Christ. Jennifer chose Christ and His great gift to us, the love and guidance of the Holy Spirit.”
Fr. Bob was pleased to report that “the Committee received accolades for bringing Jennifer Hubbard to St. Mary’s to speak to our community. Her unthinkable loss affirmed our need as Catholics for an ongoing relationship with God. Jennifer’s
With Fr. Bob’s blessing, the PSP Committee hopes that the success of this event will serve as the springboard needed to offer presentations on a regular basis at the Church of St. Mary. We’re grateful to all who helped make this evening possible and to Jennifer Hubbard for giving us the foresight to seek more profound, spiritual relationships with God.
The Schools of Saint Mary
Elementary Students & Faculty Got Talent!
Saint Mary’s Elementary School students and faculty amazed us with their incredible talent during their recent show.
One of the most highly anticipated school activities has become the annual Talent Show. Since 2018, students and yes, teachers, too – get on stage in Immaculata Hall to perform for their peers and the entire school. With 16 different performances and skits, the audience was impressed with each passing minute. From ballet, dancing, singing, guitar solos, and even bagpipes, everyone was so enthusiastic and supportive of each performer and group. Way to go!
the 2023 St. Mary’s Elementary Talent Show was a fantastic success! For an hour and a half, everyone in attendance was smiling, laughing, and applauding each other’s talents and efforts. The show would not have been possible without the students and faculty who so willingly volunteered to be a part of it, and for that I’m incredibly grateful! – Ms. Bakewell

Religious Education
Dear Parish Families,
We celebrated two very special days in April and May as the children received their First Holy Communion at several Masses. Filled with excitement and wonder, they beautifully expressed the joy of receiving Christ for the first time. Holy Communion actually becomes the moment of closest union with God that we can reach on earth. With Him, all that we are is in God. Seeing the children seated alongside their decorated Communion banners warmed our hearts with love.
We are so grateful to all the support given by Catechists, parents, parish priests and staff.
It was blessing as well to participate in the special Crowning of the Blessed Mother by Mrs. Toher’s Grade 4 class. The children offered prayers, sang hymns and left humble petitions with her Immaculate Heart.
May the grace of God bless St. Mary First Communicants, all our students and parish.
Enjoy this beautiful month of May!

THE KNIGHTS
Add a subheading Knights Help Make the Future Shine Brightly
Since 2010, the Knights of Columbus Fr. William A. Daly Council #2122 has generously donated proceeds of their “Keep Christ in Christmas” car magnet sales to the Schools of Saint Mary Tuition Assistance Fund.
Established to help deserving students continue their education at St. Mary’s, the Fund provides relief to families facing financial challenges and brightly ensures the future for students of St. Mary’s through examples of named gifts. Once again, sales this past Christmas season nearly depleted their inventory, which enabled the generous donation to continue for the 13th consecutive year. GK Mark Sauvigne (L) and DGK Tony Racioppo (R) presented this year’s gift to Father Dominik during the Council’s May meeting.
We remain tremendously grateful to the Knights’ admirably generous ministry in the Church of St. Mary. For more information on the Fr. William A. Daly Council #2122, please visit www.kofc2122.org.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
What is Adoration?
When Catholics say they are “going to Adoration,” they are typically referring to Eucharistic Adoration. Which, in the most basic terms, is the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass. The Eucharistic Host is displayed in a monstrance on the altar so that all can see and pray in the presence of Christ.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) tells us that, “Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God. Adoration of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives assurance to our supplications.” (CCC 2628)
We can show our adoration to God in many ways, but in Eucharistic Adoration, we spend time adoring the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
The Saints Encourage Us to Go to Adoration
“Whenever I go to the chapel, I put myself in the presence of our good Lord, and I say to him, ‘Lord, I am here. Tell me what you would have me to do’ . . . And then, I tell God everything that is in my heart. I tell him about my pains and my joys, and then I listen. If you listen, God will also speak to you, for with the good Lord, you have to both speak and listen. God always speaks to you when you approach him plainly and simply.” –
St. Catherine Labouré
“The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time that you will spend on earth. Each moment that you spend with Jesus will deepen your union with Him and make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in heaven, and will help bring about an everlasting peace on earth.” –
St. Teresa of Calcutta
“Know also that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual exercises of the day. True, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, for He has made the promise, ‘Ask, and you shall receive,’ but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace.” –
St. Alphonsus Liguori
“O Christ, let my greatest delight be to see You loved and Your praise and glory proclaimed, especially the honor of Your mercy. O Christ, let me glorify Your goodness and mercy to the last moment of my life, with every drop of my blood and every beat of my heart. Would that I be transformed into a hymn of adoration of You. When I find myself on my deathbed, may the last beat of my heart be a loving hymn glorifying Your unfathomable mercy. Amen.” –
St. Faustina

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith.
