From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21) In our parable today, Jesus introduces us to three stewards of a wealthy man. The first two, entrusted with his greater wealth, return to him more than they received. The issue is with the one who does not increase the wealth that was entrusted to him. His punishment is to be “thrown out in the darkness where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” It seems sort of harsh since the servant was so afraid of his master. But if you think about it, aren’t we all called to use whatever gifts have been entrusted to us for the glory of God? At our baptism, we are commissioned by those words we heard Jesus speak on Ascension Thursday: “Go forth to all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit and teaching them to carry out everything I have commanded you.” This commission of the Faithful is the responsibility of all who claim the name of Jesus. Our Catholic Christian faith challenges us to be preachers to the world. While how we do that preaching will be different and as varied as there are gifts, we are all called to that preaching. Preaching, as St. Francis of Assisi tells us, is not always words. So often, it is our actions that more deeply reflect our faith in Jesus. God has gifted us all in our Time, Talent and Treasure. We either grow in our sharing of our gifts or we stand still, paralyzed if you will, as was the third steward. W can never allow the gifts of the Holy Spirit to lie dormant, but rather, we must cooperate and allow the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in our lives. The fruit that our lives bear is the gift we return to God. As we come to the end of our Liturgical Year, the Church focuses our attention on the end of our days. It is fitting that we take time to reflect on what return we make to God for the blessings in this life. To be that faithful servant, we make a deliberate choice to do what is commanded. To follow Jesus is, of course, not easy, but rather a daily commitment. Remember that for believers it is not a “once saved always saved.” It is making the choice to grow in the love of God and responding to a love that bears fruit for the world. What is this parable trying to tell us? I believe it is that, at times, Christian living demands choices which go against the prevailing thinking and ways of acting. Many of the great saints whom we venerate made those choices to bear fruit in their own lives. Even the age of the Martyrs is a wonderful testimony to the many simple persons who made the same choices. The choice for our lives must be based in the secure belief and hope that this life is not the end; there is something much larger and Someone who awaits us. May we all have that faith and hope so that our choices will be choices after the heart of God. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in our lives so we may be worthy to hear the words of today’s Gospel: “Well done, good and faithful servant, come share your Master’s joy.” On behalf of myself, Fr. Dominik, Fr. Eddy, the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, the teachers and staff of the Schools and Religious Education Program of St. Mary’s parish and the entire staff, we wish you and your families a blessed and truly thankful Thanksgiving Day! In Jesus, Fr. Bob

The Apostle of the Impossible: the Tour of the Relics of St. Jude the Apostle Is Coming to Brooklyn All Are Invited to Join with the Parish of Most Precious Blood-Sts. Simon and Jude on the Feast of Christ the King to Honor St. Jude and Seek His Intercession Sunday, November 26th Mass at 3:00 PM Followed by Veneration of the Relic until 9:00 PM Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, Celebrant Sts. Simon and Jude Church 185 Van Sicklen Street, Brooklyn (handicapped accessible) 718-375-9600 Last summer, Treasures of the Church, an evangelization ministry of the Catholic Church, proudly announced a major event for US Catholics: a pilgrimage of the arm of the Apostle, St. Jude Thaddeus. From September 2023 to May 2024, the nation will host the Apostle of the Impossible: the Tour of the Relics of St. Jude the Apostle. Father Carlos Martins, CC, a Custos Reliquiarum (ecclesiastically-appointed curate of relics) and director of Treasures of the Church, is leading the tour of the relic of one of Jesus Christ’s closest collaborators to cities across the county. This marks the first time the relic has left Italy. For more information and an up-to-date list on exposition times and locations, visit www.apostleoftheimpossible.com.

About Saint Jude As the son of Mary of Clopas (Cleophas), the sister of the Blessed Virgin Mary and one of the “three Marys” who stood by Jesus during His Crucifixion, Jude is the Lord’s first cousin. Saint Jude’s visit offers a unique opportunity for devotees and the curious alike to experience a connection with one of the most venerated figures in Christian history. “Regarded as the patron saint of lost causes and desperate situations,” Martins notes, “the visit provides an opportunity for individuals to experience intimacy with someone who dwells in Heaven and beholds God face-to-face. It allows devotees to receive his blessing and entrust him with their petitions.”

About the Relics Saint Jude’s body was buried in the place of his martyrdom but was transferred to Rome during the time of Emperor Constantine. His tomb rests directly below the main altar of the left transept of St. Peter’s Basilica. Several centuries ago, his arm was removed and placed in a simple wooden reliquary carved in the shape of a priestly arm, imparting a blessing. They reside within the same today.

About the Tour When asked why the tour is happening now, Martins responded, “This pilgrimage comes to a nation still reeling from the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many still grieve a loved one claimed by the virus, numerous folks suffer the effects of long-Covid and other pandemic-related medical conditions, long-term isolation has led to depression for many and deterioration in mental health, there is widespread distrust of public policy and media reporting, and many face economic hardship due to closed businesses and inflation. The Apostle’s visit is an effort by the Catholic Church to give comfort and hope to all who need it.”

Extraordinary Papal Plenary Indulgence Pilgrims will be able to receive an extraordinary Plenary Indulgence issued by Pope Francis and published by the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary. The Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | November 19, 2023

Respect Life Ministry Please Join St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry as We Pray

One Thousand Hail Marys

for Peace in the Holy Land, in our country, and around the world

Saturday, December 9th Following the 9:00 AM Mass, until mid-afternoon, in the side Chapel Our Blessed Mother has promised that with prayer, there can be peace in the world. Please join us, if only for a few minutes!

Each life is precious. As Catholics, we know something many of our brothers and sisters in the Middle East do not know: the power of Our Lady’s intercession for peace, in particular through the Rosary. With so many lives lost, countless lives in turmoil, and atrocities committed against babies and people of all ages in the Holy Land, we ask that you pray particularly for peace. St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, at 7:00 PM, in the St. John Paul II Room of the Parish Center. Newcomers welcome! Please consider joining us — and bring friends and family. Very often a simple invitation is enough to encourage someone to participate. We will discuss ways we can follow and implement for St. Mary’s the three important steps outlined by Bishop Barres: (1) stay informed and educated, (2) get involved, and (3) PRAY! St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry encourages you to share in our pro-life efforts — your help is needed now more than ever! YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! At Fr. Bob’s direction, a new project has begun to update and add to the history of the parish of St. Mary, Manhasset. ALL PARISHIONERS are asked to support this endeavor, as we search for documents, photos, and other items related to events during the past 170 years of St. Mary. If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated: Photos Journals, Programs Announcements Newspaper articles Family remembrances Information regarding: The Elementary and High School (s) Past pastors, priests, nuns, school principals Clergy & Religious who were parish residents Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, and other ministries Celebrations, graduations, sacraments, galas, etc. Any and all of these would be very helpful. PLEASE NOTE: Any article of information which you wish to be returned can be “digitized” (scanned) and saved, then returned to you. Society of St. Vincent de Paul The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayer for O God, Creator of the universe, who extends your paternal concern over every creature and guides the events of history to goals of salvation, we acknowledge your Fatherly love when you break the resistance of mankind and, in a world torn by strife and discord, you make us ready for reconciliation. Renew for us the wonders of your MERCY; send forth your Spirit that He may work in the intimacy of our hearts, that enemies may begin to dialogue, that adversaries may shake hands and peoples may encounter one another in harmony. May all commit themselves to the sincere search for true peace which will extinguish all arguments, for charity which overcomes hatred, for pardon which disarms revenge. Parish Social Ministry Good Samaritan House would like to extend another heartfelt thank you to the parishioners of St. Mary’s. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, all of the underprivileged families we serve out of our office will receive a fresh Thanksgiving meal. They will have turkey or chicken, fresh potatoes, rolls, some fresh fruit and vegetables, desserts and more. They will be able to celebrate the holiday with their families, without the stress of purchasing this meal. Hopefully, this will help to spread the joy of Christ into their homes. Our office would also like to thank the many students who made this food collection a success. The students were members of the Good Samaritan Service Club from St. Mary’s and our Religious Education Program from the community. These kids were so focused on the tasks at hand, working for hours to help those in need. They were collecting and stocking food items, in addition to helping our office prepare for the Christmas rush. We could not have done it without them! Thank you, students, for your time and dedication to this cause! May God bless all of the families who benefit from the generosity of the Manhasset community. And may He bless all those who give so generously to those in need. Kathleen Kosciusko Director of Parish Social Ministry

In the day of trouble, the Lord delivers him.” Psalm 41:1 This is the 27th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others. We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to. Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include:

Marshalls/TJ Maxx Raindew American Express

Amazon Macy’s Target

Visa

If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list. Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 14th. As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments. Return the form below to Parish Social Ministry by November 27th Name:
