From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners, “Even when you saw this, you did not believe.” (Matthew 21:32)
In our Gospel today, Jesus teaches us through the parable of the two sons. This parable is about two brothers whose father asks them to go work in his vineyard. One son tells his father that he will go as he is told, but decides against it. The other son first responds that he will not go, but ends up following his father’s will and works all day among the vines. Jesus asks the crowd, “Which of the two did the will of the father?” The answer is, of course, clear: the one who actually did the work, though initially refused to do.
Jesus speaks these words at a critical point in His ministry, the final days of His life. Jesus goes into Jerusalem and even the Temple where the leaders were waiting for a valid reason to have Him arrested. Jesus teaches in the courtyard of the Temple right under the nose of the leaders He criticizes. They become outraged at His “insolence” and challenge Him to explain by what authority He is teaching. Jesus replies by using one of His favorite techniques, a hypothetical story to “trap” people into uncomfortable admissions.
This parable is an indictment of the religious leaders who loudly and publically proclaim themselves as followers of God, but who, in secret, are selfish, judgmental, and lacking in the love with which the vineyard of God must be tended. Their lack of true piety makes it impossible for them to truthfully and accurately accomplish the spiritual work to which they are called. They have become not instruments and bridges to the God of mercy, but rather hindrances as they place burdens on others.
In our work and personal relationships, we are reminded that actions speak louder than words. Many organizations have mission statements declaring that their top aims are customer service, product quality, civic integrity, putting their people first, and the like. Yet, we still can encounter in these companies poor service, quality, integrity, and employee relations. Individuals may do the same thing, extolling their plans, yet failing to implement them. Organizations and individuals falling into this trap may have good intentions, and they may not recognize that they are failing to live up to their rhetoric. Workplaces need both effective systems for implementing their mission and goals, and impartial monitoring systems to give unvarnished feedback.
The same should be true for us as believers. Our lives and certainly our presence in Church should bear witness to our own mission statement. It presumes that we are followers of Jesus and hence ones who live in truth the way of Jesus. A response that, at times, we may not live as we should.
The response of both sons is probably more common than we like to admit. I don’t think it makes us evil or even “bad” Christians. It may mean that, at times, we are weak or even prideful. I dare say that in the end most of us, like the good son, turn back to God and do what is expected of us. A good reminder can be found in the words today of St. Paul: “Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, looking out for the interests of others.” A mindset of service can be a great assistance in keeping us on the path of our own spiritual mission as tenders and workers in the vineyard. We sin, certainly, but God doesn’t leave us in our own muck. He has given us the Sacrament of Reconciliation, that place that refocuses our vision again to the spiritual work of God. Ezekiel offers us powerful and hopeful words: “If the sinner turns from his sin and does what is right, he shall preserve his life, and shall live and not die.”
We know that we can recognize in our selves attributes and responses of both sons. How we live depends on which attitude, toward God and our spiritual purpose, we choose to embrace and affirm. So never despair, my dear sisters and brothers, God holds out His arms and gently calls us back to Himself.
I am pleased to announce that I have hired Daniel Maimone as the Music Director here at St. Mary’s. Danny is no stranger to St Mary’s. This was his home parish growing up and he served for many years as a cantor and substitute organist. During the COVID-19 shutdown, Dan put together a beautiful schola to sing at our live-streamed Masses. I am sure you will all join me in welcoming Dan to our staff

New members are always welcome! We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.
The Gospel today is a great example of saying, “actions speak louder than words.” As you put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s poor box, know that you are putting your faith into action.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Every Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass
Let the little children come to me... (Matt 19:14)
What is it? After the Opening Prayer, children are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel, hear the Sunday Readings and participate in an interactive reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that young children can understand. They return to the church at the beginning of the Creed. There is no age range and no preregistration is required.
Adults (especially catechists): We would love to have some new people get involved in this ministry. Materials and training are provided; scheduling is flexible. If interested, please contact Jane Clifford at bulletin@stmary. ws or sit in with us on Sunday.

Rosary Society
Our Mission Statement:
The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart
Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life.
If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.
September was a busy month for our Rosarians!
Inspired by a suggestion from Toni Sanzeri, Sue Mellen organized an impromptu celebration for the Nativity of Our Blessed Mother on September 8th. Marian hymns were sung during the 9:00 AM Mass, with Fr. Bob presiding. Following the usual recitation of the daily Rosary, members of the Rosary Society hosted a simple reception in Our Lady’s honor, which included breakfast treats, a spiritual bouquet for Mother Mary, and, of course, a birthday cake!
The Ranger Rosary Group met on Wednesday, September 20th, where they packaged 720 Rosaries made by the group and shipped them to Annapolis. From there, the Rosaries will be distributed to the various branches of the military. Since our group’s inception in 2014, they have made almost 18,000 Rosaries. They would love to increase their membership and invite any parishioner interested in learning how to make Ranger Rosaries to contact Judy Iacono at jiacono1@aol.com. The next group meeting will be on January 17th at 10:00 AM in the Library.
We held our Opening Mass on September 21st, followed by lunch in the Marian room, with over 50 women in attendance. It was a great way to kick off the year and catch up with fellow Rosarians. Those in attendance had the opportunity to sing Happy Birthday to our long time Rosarian, Florence Parrella, who celebrated her 99th birthday.
October is the Month of the Holy Rosary
“With the Rosary, the Christian people sit at the school of Mary and are led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of His love. Through the Rosary, the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.” - St. John Paul II, 2002, as the Year of the Rosary and addition of the Luminous Mysteries were announced.
Friday, October 7th, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
The Catholic Church dedicates the entire month of October to the Holy Rosary. This month-long observance is largely due to the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, celebrated on October 7th. According to legend, Mary entrusted the Rosary to St. Dominic in the 13th century to aid in conflicts with the Albigensians (who held that the physical world was inherently evil). Later, the Dominican Pope, St. Pius V, extended the popularity of the Rosary by introducing this feast day in 1571. Toward the end of the 19th century, Pope Leo XIII promoted the practice of dedicating the entire month of October to the Rosary.
Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Pray for Us!
Friday, October 13th - Our first monthly meeting will be held in the John Paul II Room at 10:15 AM. All members are welcome. We will discuss our plans for 2023-2024 as well as discuss our annual Christmas dinner which will be held on Wednesday, December 6th. Look out for email updates in your mailbox.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Prayers for Adoration
O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
ACT OF REPENTANCE
We recall that we can never be worthy of God and that his mercy is an undeserved gift. “This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10).
(You can choose to make an examination of conscience, recalling specific sins and asking for God’s forgiveness and healing.)
O my God, I repent of all my sins from my heart, and I detest them, not only because I deserve the just penalties, but most of all because I have offended you, the highest Good who are worthy to be loved above all things. Therefore, I firmly propose, by the help of your grace, not to sin again and to flee near occasions of sin. Amen. (from the Rite of Penance)
PRAYER
HYMN
Jesus, the very thought of thee With sweetness fills the breast; But sweeter far thy face to see, And in thy presence rest. No voice can sing, no heart can frame, Nor can the memory find A sweeter sound than thy blest Name, O Savior of mankind!
O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, To those who fall, how kind thou art! How good to those who seek! All those who find thee find a bliss Nor tongue nor pen can show; The love of Jesus, what it is, None but his loved ones know. Jesus, our only joy be thou, As thou our prize will be; Jesus, be thou our glory now, And through eternity.
- Jesu dulcis memoria, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, tr. Edward Caswall, 1849
O God, who established your only-begotten Son as the Savior of mankind and decreed that he be called Jesus, mercifully grant that we who venerate his Name on earth may also behold his face in heaven. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Despite the weather preventing what is typically an outdoor event to view the sunrise over Marist Hall, students and teachers gathered in the cafeteria to share breakfast and a mutual excitement for the upcoming year. Thank you to all who helped to continue this tradition for our senior class. We know it's going to be a great year!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.
Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
