Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for tonight’s league

match in the newly sponsored BetVictor Southern League Division One Central. Tonight we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Yaxley FC and we hope you all spend an enjoyable evening with us here in St Neots before travelling safely back up the A1 later tonight.

Well here we go again, another nine months of ups and downs, highs and lows, jubilation and despair, all things we can relate to I’m sure following a non league football club and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support going forward. So then, we embark on a new adventure in Division One Central with our new squad and

management team and the campaign began on Saturday when we travelled to Bedworth United however, these notes were penned prior to this game so I’m hoping for a positive result in the season’s opener. So many new faces joining us during the summer recess but please join me in welcoming them all to the club and I hope we can again grow that bond between supporters and playing staff like we have in the past. Early signs are that we will do as our Player/ Management Sponsorship programme has been very well supported with only a few lads left to find a sponsor so once again, thank you all for supporting us.

As well as a new division for the First Team this season, the same can be said for our

Reserves and Under 18s. Our Second String won a reprieve from relegation during the summer after Brampton and Bar Hill announced they would no longer be competing in the Cambridgeshire FA County League Kershaw Premier Division so we once again take our place in this division, rather than in the Senior A Division. Our Under 18s have this season been placed into a very strong looking Thurlow Nunn Youth League West Division. The official line is the move was neccessary so we fit into the travelling boundaries however, after winning the Cambridge Division for the past three seasons, I think the powers that be wanted more competitive divisions. Home games for the youngsters will also change from Mondays to Thursday evenings and as always, admission will be free, via Reedmans Bar

Right then, back to tonight’s game. I’m sure Yaxley will be coming here

to upset the apple cart so please get behind the lads from the off and hopefully you will cheer the lads on to three very welcome points. Until next time…

From The Dugout‌ With Manager

Tonight we welcome Yaxley FC to the Premier Plus Stadium, in what will be one of a

number of local games this coming season. We hope all off the supporters, club officials present to watch the match enjoy their visit. It’s been a very busy and productive summer since the end of April (our last home game) where there has been a lot of change along the way. We have lost staff members and players which unfortunately with relegation is very natural and we wish all of those very well in the future as they were fantastic for the football club throughout their time. Myself, Sean and Matty have made sure we have recruited the right types of people / players in turn to match the way we want to deliver things on and off the pitch. So far we are happy with the progress we have made in terms of a smoother transition with each player coming into the club buying into our ethos. With preseason finished and a distant memory for supporters, its one that's been hugely beneficial for the staff & players - we created a pre-season schedule that would challenge the players correctly, were we could be in possession for longer periods, where we had to defend for longer periods and that certainly delivered expectations. The MK Dons in particular was an experience that some players / staff may not be fortunate to experience on many occasions; playing / managing against top class people who have done exceptional things in the game and then for the first 60 mins at Haverhill we showed what a threat we can be in possession - we now hope to continually grow, get better and most importantly win football games. Lee Watkins will be 1st Team Captain, with Jake Kerins being Vice Captain and Ben Bradley / Jake Noble being given the Club Captaincy for the current campaign - four very good players, good people - that will demand excellence on and off the pitch.

We hope to see as many supporters at the game tonight - continuing the fantastic support from last season and beyond, trust me the players appreciate every bit of positive support given to them... Please back them! Myself, Sean & Matty look forward to the jouney.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

YAXLEY FC Year founded: 1962 Chairman: Malcolm Clements Club Website: www.yaxleyfc.com

Welcome to our Huntingdonshire friends Yaxley- for the first time at Step Four after a long history including membership of the former Hunts League. This is to be Yaxley’s second season at Step Four after finishing 11th in their first season following promotion from the United Counties League. They began this season with a victory in the group round on the Hunts Premier Cup beating out lads in a penalty shoot-out to reach a final berth against St Ives Town (yet to be played). A glance at the records shows that the last visit Yaxley made to the Premier Plus Stadium was 26th November 2005 when our lads won a thriller 4-3 in a Senior Cup tie (report elsewhere in this programme) but we have met half a dozen times since then either at Yaxley or at a neutral venue in cup competition. In the past decade Huntingdonshire football has made a significant stride forward following St Neots’ elevation to Step Four in the 2011/12 season. Since then St Ives Town and Yaxley have joined us in the Southern League with other clubs challenging for further promotion. Yaxley

of course was the first club to install a 3G surface on their main pitch and we look forward to our visit there in January next year. Yaxley kicked of their season on Saturday with a visit from Halesowen Town – one of the two other clubs relegated with us from the Premier Division at the end of last season. The result will have been interesting for the Midlands club begin the new season as one of the bookies favourites for promotion come next May. We shall see……. Next weekend is FA Cup weekend for both of our clubs. Our lads make the short trip to Godmanchester where we shall face around five players who were formerly with the club including the Hall twins and Micky Hyem. Meantime Yaxley are also on the road and have an interesting tie at Biggleswade FC – one of the local rising stars also in our league following their promotion last season.

as well as the Hinchingbrooke and County Cups. However, more recently we met in July this year in the Hunts Premier Cup. My records show fifteen cup meetings since 1997 plus fourteen meetings in the United Counties League – making Yaxley our most regular opponents in all football in the past 22 years. Our four most recent meetings were: 2009/10 (Hunts Senior Cup) Yaxley 0-1 St Neots (Cup Final at Huntingdon) 2015/16 (Hunts Senior Cup) Yaxle 1-6 St Neots 2018/19 (Hunts Senior Cup) Yaxley 2-2 St Neots (St Neots won 3-2 on pens) 2019/20 (Hunts Premier Cup) Yaxley 1-1 St Neots (Yaxley won 4-1 on pens)

History - Yaxley The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers,

being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902/03 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came about in 1950/51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950’s. The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues which, over the years have been sponsored and known by many names such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975/76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title. The 1983/84 season was a superb one with the first team winning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987/88 season and made the step up to the Eastern

League at the start of the following season. 1993/94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994/95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the ill-fated West Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. The Reserves also won Division One of the same competition, thus emulating the feat of 1984/85. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. The ‘02/03 season saw the Reserve and Youth teams win the lion’s share of league and cup silverware whilst Jim Watson took over the management of the First Team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that are part of a five years objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) league. Plans were also made to incorporate Yaxley Juniors and establish a new Ladies team to assist in creating a community

orientated football club. The ‘03/04, 04/05 and 05/06 seasons have undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the 1st, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 06. The club has achieved FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g. new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled, and the project restarted in August ’06. Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The 09/10 season was one of the toughest in the clubs’ history and against most of the league pundit’s opinions, Clippo and the lads pulled survival from the jaws of relegation. The 2010-11 season was equally as hard but with the team finishing 16th in the league and completing the season with a massive 7-0 victory over Rothwell Corinthians (the biggest league score ever for the Cuckoos). Investment developments through 2010 and early 2011 resulted in the completion of our new facility in time for the 2011-12 season - at long last!

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION ONE

Bedworth United 0 A draw to this season opener between two of the relegated teams was a fair outcome but St Neots boss Marc Abbott probably finished the happier of the two Managers. A clean sheet is always good for morale but both sides had their chances with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested. Last season at Bedworth St Neots lost to an injury time single goal so this was an improvement, but Abbott will be pondering over where his sides’ goals are going to come from. Defensively St Neots looked sound and had the luxury of loanee defender Mikkel Fosu spectating from the bench but in the first half they looked nervous and unsure despite having wind advantage which they failed to exploit. However, they finished the game the stronger of the two sides but still lacked the cutting edge in attack that could have produced a deciding goal. The first twenty minutes were largely uneventful with the two sides cancelling each other out in midfield. Bedworth wide man Lewis Chester looked capable of breaking the deadlock with some searching runs down either flank, but the finish was missing. St Neots were guilty of conceding too many free kicks inside their own half which put them under unnecessary pressure and after 26 minutes a breakthrough looked imminent when a delightful cross field pass by Luke Rowe played Chester clear and only a last ditch recovery by Stevan Shaw saved the day for the visitors. Rowe was then left unmarked from a set piece but headed tamely wide and from a Richard Blythe cross,

St Neots Town 0

Alexander Troke had his shot comfortably saved by James Philp. As half time approached St Neots began to look more assured and when Joe Sutton was brought down on the edge of his opponents’ penalty area, Alfie Conner’s free kick was well saved by home custodian Adam Harrison who also parried another set piece from the same St Neots player. Lee Watkins then sent a fierce shot just the wrong side of a post and the half ended with Troke heading over when he should have at least tested the keeper. If St Neots had finished the first half on top, the home side exploded into life upon the restart with the widely travelled Mitchell Piggon having two headed attempts, but both were off target. Tim N’Kala having a quiet match for the visitors did set up Sam Bennett on the hour but Harrison dived at his feet to save and shortly afterwards an injury to Conner forced St Neots into their first change with Mason Rhiney substituting. Sam Gomersall also came on for N’Kala and these changes led to a change in fortune with St Neots beginning to dictate the pattern of play. Bedworth replied with two substitutes of their own, but St Neots were creating openings and Harrison had to produce the first significant save of the match as he turned an Aaron Smith shot over the bar at full stretch, Bennett then headed wide and the game lost some of its momentum with Referee James Cox losing patience and booking several players for relatively minor misdemeanours. Having a quiet second half Bedworth

danger man Chester had their final chance to snatch victory after a swift team move, but he shot wide and at the other end St Neots lengthy efforts by Rhiney and Watkins were comfortably saved by the home keeper. ‘It is always good to get a clean sheet and an away point to kick off the season’ commented St Neots Assistant boss Sean Greygoose. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Conner, Goode, Shaw, Watkins, Sutton, N’Kala, Bennett, Mutswunguma Subs: Gomersall (for N’Kala 63 mins), Rhiney (for Conner 63 mins), Fosu and Joseph. THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE WEST DIVISION 2019/20

Why we love the start of the Non-League season……. So here we are again, the summer is finally done and competitive football is back for us all to enjoy. As a football fan this is the time of year that we all love. It is the moment where anything seems possible, a battle for the play-offs or maybe even a push against all the odds for promotion. Nothing beats that feeling on the season’s opening day. Watching a raft of new signings take to the pitch, reconnecting with old friends after a long summer away and of course, tucking into a pre (and sometimes even post-match) pie. Personally, I feel as though this excitement at the start of the season is amplified in Non-League, more so than in the country’s higher divisions. Open any sports publication over the next few weeks and you will be treated to page after page of Premier League previews, analyzing to the finest detail every single signing, formation and style of a play that a team could possibly adopt. Sure it can be interesting but it means that when the season kicks off there are no unknown quantities. In Non-League the opposite is true. There is a reason why the overall conclusion of every single league is so hard to call, from down at the bottom of the pyramid to right up in the National League. Of course we go to great lengths to preview the leagues and over the past few weeks we have brought out a lot of material looking ahead to the upcoming campaign but in truth there are just so many aspects which make the new Non-League season so unpredictable. With unproven new signings, previously unknown managers and even entirely new squads taking to the field, nothing can beat the start of the Non-League season for excitement!

Another Channel Island club! It was brilliant to see new Step 6 side Jersey Bulls take to the field for their first ever professional match at the weekend. They have followed Guernsey to become the second Channel Island club to enter the Non-League pyramid. Having spoken extensively to Guernsey manager Tony Vince over the last few years I have become well accustomed to the huge logistical challenges that are involved with running a side just a matter of the kilometres from the French coast. Early morning flights and accommodation need to be regularly booked, which certainly doesn’t come cheap, so I take my hat off to those behind the formation of the new club. Over the last few years Guernsey have managed to galvanise a brilliant level of support from within the island and I feel confident that Jersey will be able to do exactly the same!
