Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium – Home of the Saints – for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.
Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Kempston Rovers FC and we hope you all have an enjoyable, if brief, stay with us before travelling safely back over the county border into Bedfordshire.
First of all, I hope you all enjoyed spending quality time with your friends and
families over the festive period and for those who travelled to Bedford – received the best of Christmas gifts – three valuable points and a performance to be proud of in what was our last game of a somewhat turbulent 2019.
This game was also to be Director of Football Matt Clements’ first game back in the helm as Caretaker Manager and what a way to begin what will hopefully be a brief stint in charge by winning at your local rivals on a bank holiday.
On the subject of Managers, we are very hopeful of bringing you an update on our search for the new man at the top very soon so please keep your eyes peeled on social media etc for further details
Well back to today’s game and a tough match in prospect
against a Kempston side languishing just one place above us in the division and funnily enough, we are looking to achieve our first league double of the season, having beaten the Walnut Boys at Hillgrounds way back in August. Please get behind the lads once again today as your support is going to play a vital part in proceedings as we look to close the gap on our visitors and hopefully continue our rise up the table.
Enjoy the game…..
OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
KEMPSTON ROVERS Year founded: 1885 Chairman: Russell Shreeves Club Website: www.afckempston.com
A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS KEMPSTON ROVERS WHO VISIT US FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 11TH DECEMBER 2007. At the end of the 2007/08 season Kempston were relegated to Division One of the UCL and so in our last three seasons in the Premier Division of that league we did not meet. However, since that league meeting (which was in the final season at our former Rowley Park) we have played each other three times. The first was in the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final on 6th May 2011 at Jubilee Park Huntingdon when Rovers pulled off something of a surprise defeating us by a goal to nil. Earlier this season we met at Kempston on 26th August – Bank Holiday Monday – and courtesy of a goal in each half we won 2-0. Neither of our scorers are able to repeat their feat in this return match because Alfie Connor (a penalty) and Jake Kerins have both moved on. Three weeks after that league victory, St Neots returned to Hillgrounds to record another victory – this time by a goal
to nil in the League Cup with Aaron Smith on the scoresheet – his only goal of the season so far. Kempston returned to the Premier Division of the UCL winning the league title in 2016/17 to move up to Step Four in the Southern League (East Division) and finishing a very creditable seventh in the table – a point ahead of neighbours Bedford Town. That was their best Step Four finish because the following season they finished 13th in the reconstituted Central Division. Kempston are the side immediately above St Neots in the league table but they have an eight points advantage and they most recent victory was away at Berkhamsted who had not been beaten at home until Kempston visited. Club History The club are thought to have been founded in 1884, although the first evidence of their existence dates to 1887 when the Kempston Rovers rugby club played their first football match. At the rugby club’s AGM in 1891, it was decided to create a football team called Kempston Montrose. Three years later
Kempston Montrose folded and its assets transferred to Kempston Association. An 1895 meeting saw another new team formed, Kempston Rovers. They gained the nickname “the Walnut boys” due to Kempston being well known for its walnuts. The club initially played in both the Bedford & District League and the Biggleswade & District League; they won the Bedford & District League in 1907–08 and 1908–09 (a season in which they also won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time) and the Biggleswade & District League in 1910–11 and 1911–12. [2] In 1927 they joined the Bedfordshire & District County League, which became the South Midlands League in 1929, where they remained until switching to Division Two of the United Counties League in 1953. They won the division in 1955–56, and the following season Division Two and One were merged into one league in which Kempston finished runners-up. In 1957–58, the club were United Counties League champions. The league was split into two division again in 1961–62 and Kempston were placed in Division Two. Despite finishing tenth that season, they were promoted to Division One. In 1973, Division One was
renamed the Premier Division and in 1974–75 Kempston were league champions again, also reaching the fifth round of the FA Vase. In 1978–79 Kempston reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, the furthest they have ever got in the competition. They repeated their record FA Vase run in 1980–81, again reaching the fifth round. Rovers were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1982–83 season, having finished bottom of the Premier Division, but were promoted again in 1985–86 after winning Division One. The club won the Huntingdonshire Premier Cup for the first time in 1999–2000, retaining it the following season. The club was relegated again in 2003, and in 2004 were renamed AFC Kempston Rovers name following the merger of Kempston Rovers, Kempston Colts and Kempston Town. After finishing third in Division One in 2006–07 they were promoted to the Premier Division, but were relegated at the end of the following season. In 2010–11, the club was again promoted to the Premier Division after winning Division One for the third time. In 2015–16 the club won the Premier Division, earning promotion to Division One Central of the Southern League for the first time in their history. In 2017 the division was renamed Division One East.
was a member of our 201516 UCL Premier Division and North Beds Cup winning squad. An able deputy, Carl made a more concerted challenge for the number one spot last season.
Player Profiles
Jordan Wright – Defender – Jordan joined on a dual registration with Potton United. He is a tough centre half who takes no prisoners
Carl Knox – Goalkeeper – Carl signed for Kempston in 2014 an experienced goal keeper
Oliver Kirkup – Goalkeeper – Oliver has been with Kempston since he was four years old and has represented the club at every level, still a teenager, he has time on his side to break in to the first team. Michael Hudson – Goalkeeper – Michael made his first team debut last season and has been a key figure in the reserves and under 18s in recent years Robbie Goodman – Defender – Robbie was on the books of Rovers since joining from Ampthill in 2015. He was named player of the year in 2018, but left to join Barton shortly after Tony Joyce took over as manager of Kempston. Having seen the error of his ways, he re-joined in the summer of 2019. He notched his 200th appearance for the Walnut Boys over the festive period in 2019. James Sage – Defender – An autumn recruit from near neighbours Bedford Town, James has added some more depth to the defence. The left footed central defender has made an instant impact in MK42. He has formed a good partnership with Jordan Wright at the heart of the defence.
in the challenge. Jordan has taken on the captain’s armband this season and has demonstrated some really good leadership, despite his relatively young age. Cameron Hyde – Defender – Cameron was part of a very successful youth side at Kempston Rovers, before other commitments led to him spending some time at Bedford FC. He has returned to make his mark on the first team. His marauding style have made him a favourite with the fans at Hillgrounds. Max Marsh – Defender – Max began the season in the successful reserve side but has managed to break through into the first team this season. He is tough and eager to learn his trade with Rovers. Lewis Jones – Defender – Lewis joined Rovers in February 2019 from Bedford FC after training with the club for a while. A strong, determined centre half, Jones has already made a number of key appearances for The Walnut Boys Finlay Brennan – Defender – Fin signed on loan from MK Dons, he has made his first team MK debut this season. Ben Baker – Midfield – Ben, a pacy and tricky wide player, joined Rovers in the Autumn of 2019 as The Walnut Boys sought to re-shape the midfield. Evan Beldon – Midfield – Evan is a product of Kempston Rovers Colts youth system and was part of the U18 Chiltern League Champions of 17/18 season. He has
made a number of cameo appearances for the first team this season as he looks to establish himself in senior football. Gareth Hunt – Midfield – Gareth was initially with Rovers youth set up in 2010, making over sixty appearances for the U18s and the reserves in three seasons, as well as a number of first team run outs. He returned ‘home’ this season to anchor the midfield for Tony Joyce’ team. Stefan Bailey – Midfield – Stefan joined Kempston from Barton Rovers as Tony Joyce added some more steel to midfield. The robust ball winner has experience with a number of local sides as well as having made a handful of appearances for QPR Emmanuel Dahie – Midfield – Manny had featured for the development side under Stuart Mellon, now assistant manager. His technique and eye for goal led him to be top scorer for the Devs in the 2017-18 season. Harry Stratton – Midfield – Harry has re-joined Kempston from Newport Pagnell to pick up where he left off at the end of the 2017-18 season, establishing himself as a fan favourite and enjoying the sounds of Sham69’s classic “Hurry Up Harry” ringing out from the terraces. Sam Johnson – Midfield – The flying winger returned to Rovers in November 2019 after a spell with AFC Rushden & Diamonds. Sam has also played in New Zealand,
earning rave reviews. Callum Shortt – Forward – Still only a teenager, Callum is one of the youngest members of the Rovers squad this season, he impressed while on trial with the reserve side during the summer and has been drafted in to the first team by manager Tony Joyce. Izale McLeod – Forward – Izale arrived at Kempston in November 2018 with one job – score goals. It is something he has done throughout his high profile career. He is the all time top goal-scorer for MK Dons. His goals also kept Barnet in the Football League for two seasons in a row before he joined Portsmouth. He has also had spells at Charlton, Notts County and Crawley among others. Jake Newman – Forward – Jake rejoined the club on the eve of the new season, having been top scorer in the 2017-18 season with over 30 goals. Jake has played for AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Peterborough Sports and St. Ives Town, scoring goals wherever he has been. Jake recently scored his fiftieth goal for the club in eighty games. Tony Joyce – Manager – Tony joined Kempston in the summer of 2016. Tony has a wealth of non-league football having previously been manager at Buckingham Town and Southern League Aylesbury United. He moved up the bench from coach to manager in November following the resignations of the previous joint-managers. Also registered as a player, apparently, he has to pay
into the club fines kitty every time he names himself on the bench. Stuart Mellon – Coach – Stuart came to Rovers in the summer of 2016, he was the first coach of the Development side and after two seasons’ work in the County League, he made the step up to work with the first team. He was promoted to assistant manager after Joyce took the hotseat, making himself indispensable as Joyce’ trusted lieutenant. Jardaine Patel-Joseph Sport Therapist – Jardaine has worked at Rovers for two seasons, shadowing the senior sports therapists during that time He has now taken over the senior role from, the now retired, Colin Hodsden. Kempston Rovers have also registered a number of players from the reserve team on first team forms to provide cover as needed during the season. During the 2018-19 season, a more than a dozen players that have represented Kempston at youth or development level made first team appearances, a philosophy richly encouraged by manager Tony Joyce.

Over recent weeks at NLP Towers, we’ve been reminiscing about the last ten years in NonLeague football and picked out some of the most significant moments and their protagonists. You may have seen the features in the paper and there were plenty of tough calls among those we just had to get in. But it quickly dawned on us that it’s an almost impossible task. When we put the question out on social media the responses came flooding in. From favourite goals to individual matches, cup wins and title triumphs – the list went on and on. In many ways the variety of replies shows just how vast Non-League football is, and how much so many different clubs mean to people. While sometimes we may question standing in the cold on a wet December night, when those big moments come along it makes it all worthwhile. Of course, the debate is subjective. That is also what makes this game so much fun to watch and care about. The discussions that fill a car ride home from an away game or are had over a pint in the bar after a game. The last ten years have gone by in the blink of an eye. The very landscape of Non-League football has changed since the decade began. Clubs have risen through the Pyramid, others have sadly slipped off the map altogether. There are new play-off formats in the National League’s three divisions and there are even play-offs at Step 5. We’ve also seen the introduction of new divisions at Steps 3 and 4 – with the latter to get another – taking the level to eight – next year. The make-up of Step 5 and 6 will also be changing. Without a crystal ball it’s impossible to know exactly how Non-League will look in another ten years. There will surely be plenty of differences and there are issues the game needs to collectively address in the near future. Will the EFL accept three-up, three-down? Will their clubs want to allow the use of artificial surfaces? Will there be rule changes to ensure the sustainability of clubs? Time will tell, but at the heart of it, football fans will hopefully still be enjoying those special, and very personal, moments. So let’s hear your moment, manager and player of the decade – email us at nlp@greenwayspublishing.co.uk or tweet us @NonLeaguePaper and your answer may be featured in the paper!
SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Bedford Town The long-suffering St Neots fans got their perfect Christmas present at Bedford on Boxing day when the reshaped visiting side recorded only their third league victory of the season. Successive weather postponements had decreed that this was to mark caretaker Manager’s Matt Clements delayed return to the hot seat and he first had to select a side without two of the team’s most consistent performers – skipper Lee Watkins and Jonny Butler – both of whom were unavailable for this trip. In all there were four team changes with the Boxer brothers restored – Tom having been unavailable for the previous Senior Cup tie, and Panny after his holiday. Also included in the starting line-up were Prince Mutswunguma and recent re-signing Fernando Bell-Toxtle, replacing departed pair Ben Bradley and Alan Musoke. This proved to be St Neots first away league victory since August Bank Holiday Monday and the three points lifted them to eleven points above the relegation zone with luckless Wantage losing again after leading 2-0 at Kidlington. A goal in each half was sufficient to take the points, despite an added time goal for the hosts who had not been helped for a late show of frustration that saw them pick up six yellow cards. This was a memorable victory for it was the first Boxing Day victory since St Neots attained Southern League status eight seasons ago. St Neots looked confident from the start with Fernando Bell-Toxtle sparking an early attack which was cleared only as far as Prince Mutswunguma who fired in from the edge of the penalty area for Jamie Head to push away at full stretch. Bedford replied with the lively Ryan Sellers going past two defender to cross to the far post where a Joe Steele header was well saved by James Philp. Sam Gomersal should have done better than

St Neots Town finish weakly after good play by Bell-Toxtle and Joe Sutton and after 19 minutes St Neots deservedly forged ahead when a quick break on the left saw the speedy Prince Mutswunguma round the stranded goalkeeper to net from a narrow angle. Gomersal made up for his early effort with a shot well gathered by Head and after 26 minutes Bedford suffered a setback when the dangerous Sellers was injured and had to be replaced. Towards the end of the first half Bedford came into the game and two former St Neots players combined to almost pay them for slack defending as a Ben Ford free kick found its way to Brett Longden whose closerange effort rebounded from a goalpost to be scrambled clear. Mutswunguma scorned a chance to double the lead nine minutes before the break when he could only send a weak effort into the arms of Head, and the half finished with two cautions for home players for at best careless challenges as St Neots sought to extend their narrow advantage. Although the second half was more even from the start with possession shared it was still St Neots that looked more likely to score. Mutswunguma volleyed wide and a Tom Boxer free kick was too high. In a bid to increase their pressure Bedford sent on their two remaining permitted substitutes and tried to adopt a more attacking approach to the match. St Neots took full advantage waiting for the opening which arrived after 66 minutes when a long ball out of defence saw Mutswunguma hugging the right touchline and he went around his marker to cross to the far post where Joe Sutton dived in to get the final close-range touch to double St Neots’ advantage. In the next attack Sutton was injured and unable to continue, replaced by Adrian O’Hara one of the youth team players populating the substitutes bench. Prince

then had a shot blocked whilst the St Neots defence stood firm in the face of home attacks. Still looking dangerous on the break St Neots finally saw their defences breached a minute into added time when Thomas Hitchcock took advantage of hesitancy to knock in a Longden free kick for a late consolation goal and in the remaining time two St Neots attacks were broken up earning further bookings for the frustrated home defenders.
