Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium – Home of the Saints, for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.
Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bedworth United and we hope you enjoy your brief stay with us here in Cambridgeshire this afternoon.
It’s been a busy past ten days here at the Club both on and off the pitch. First up
was the New Year’s Day demolition of Kempston Rovers where we run in five goals and in all honesty it could and reallt should have been more. Then, last Saturday, we travelled up to Yaxley and were soundly brought crashing back to earth with a polar opposite performance from which we had served up just a few days prior. I will let you read Johh Walker’s match report, which can be found elsewhere in this edition, to fill you in on all the proceedings of the afternoon. Monday saw us name our new \first Team Manager and to any Cambridge United fans reading this, he will be no stranger to you all. BARRY CORR joins us in an exciting new partnership with the U’s to take the reigns and today’s game will be his first in charge. At the same time, we must thank Iain Parr and Matt Clements for holding the fort for the past three games – a spell where we have picked up six of the available nine points on offer. Iain will now continue with his role as Director / Academy Manager and Matt will concentrate of his duties as Director of Football. So, please join us in wishing Barry every success in his tenure with ourselves and we look forward to what we hope will be an enjoyable and fruitful time.
As ever, I ask you to get behind
the lads from the first whistle. The atmosphere here on New Years Day was awesome – let’s have some more of that today please.
Be Loud, Be Proud, Be A Saint
The introduction of VAR is causing a significant stir at the top levels of the game, but how has the launch of sin-bins in NonLeague faired this season? The FA trialled the scheme, where a referee can temporarily dismiss a player for ten minutes as punishment for dissent, across 31 grassroots leagues during the two campaigns prior to this one. During that time, 25 reported a reduction in dissent with a 38 per cent fall in the competitions that took part in the pilot, with a survey finding the majority of 1,500 participants wanted the sin-bin rule to become permanent. Following the feedback, the FA chose to implement the change up to Step 5 of the National League System from this season and figures so far have revealed it’s having a positive impact. By the end of November, in the North West Counties League, there were 95 recorded instances of dissent that resulted in a player being dismissed temporarily. At this stage last season, a total of 246 yellow cards had been shown for the same offence. “It’s hard to argue with the numbers,” the league’s chairman Paul Lawlor told The NLP. “The bigger picture, beyond the data collected so far, goes further; lads are changing how they conduct themselves on the field. “The feedback we’ve had so far from our members it that the impact has been positive. However it’s probably too early yet to draw firm conclusions.” “It’s been brilliant,” said Steve Wilkes, manager at Northwich Victoria, who saw midfielder Harvey Whyte sent to the sinbin as punishment for sarcastically applauding a decision by the referee when Vics visited Longridge for a Premier Division fixture in October. Elliot Pond scored the winning goal for the hosts while Whyte watched from the touchline. Wilkes believes his players are even less likely to err as a result. It is a view shared by Joe Doran, his counterpart at Bootle. Ryan Jones was the first goalkeeper to fall victim of the new rule during the Bucks’ defeat at Runcorn Town back in August. However he returned wearing an outfield shirt, having to wait for a stoppage in play before putting his gloves back on. Doran said: “When it happens to one of your players, it’s definitely an effective deterrent. He’s 6ft 5in and we put him up top until there was a throw-in. “I’m all for nipping it in the bud, but dissent has always been a bookable offence, it’s just referees have been too scared to caution people for it. “This feels like a halfway house.” What do you think? Have you witnessed a player being sent to the sin-bin this season? Email us at nlp@greenwayspublishing.co.uk
Iain Parr - Director (St Neots Town Football Club) commented as follows: "We are delighted to announce Barry Corr as our new 1st team manager. Barry will work closely with our current coaching staff - Sean Greygoose, Matty Joseph and Gary Dean and will have support behind the scenes from DOF Matt Clemence. We have always had a strong relationship with Cambridge United and the new partnership will see us add strength and depth to the club both on and off the pitch". Below is the press release issued by Cambridge United BARRY CORR APPOINTED ST NEOTS TOWN FC MANAGER AS CAMBRIDGE UNITED ANNOUNCE NEW STRATEGIC COLLABORATION Cambridge United can today confirm that Barry Corr has joined St Neots Town as First Team Manager, as part of a new strategic collaboration between both Football Clubs. Corr takes the helm at the Premier Plus Stadium with immediate effect whilst also continuing in his position as Development Coach at Cambridge United, where he remains responsible for managing the transition of the Club’s young professionals from youth team to senior football. The appointment therefore marks what Cambridge United hopes is the beginning of a long term strategic partnership between the two Clubs, with Barry set to combine his roles for the benefit of both parties, and enabling young players progressing from the Club's Academy to benefit from an additional pathway of gaining crucial experience of men's football. St Neots Town also gain the expertise and vast footballing experience that Barry himself will bring to the position, having played over 300 professional games through his playing career and also attained his UEFA A Licence and coaching qualifications in recent years. Barry will be assisted by the existing St Neots Town coaching staff and the link will be closely overseen by Cambridge United Head of Football Ben Strang. Strang commented: “We have observed a similar model between Colchester United and Maldon & Tiptree, and think that there is significant value to both clubs of working together. This link provides a further developmental pathway for our young players and exposes them to a senior football environment, with direction from Cambridge United.” St Neots Town FC MD Lee Kearns added: “This presents a fantastic opportunity to work closer with Cambridge United and in particular Barry and Ben. St Neots Town FC view this as a long term project that will undoubtedly have huge benefits to both clubs.“ Four Cambridge United young professionals will be joining St Neots on loan in the coming days and will be announced in due course. Please join us in welcoming Barry to St Neots Town Football Club and we look forward to seeing the benefits of what could be a great tie-up between both clubs.

BEDWORTH UNITED Year founded: 1895 Chairman: Neill Rayson-Randle Club Website :www.bedworthunited.com
WELCOME TO ALL, ESPECIALLY TO THE PLAYERS, OFFICIALS AND SUPPORTERS OF BEDWORTH UNITED WHOM WE MET ON THE OPENING DAY OF THIS SEASON. For our first Premier Plus Stadium Saturday visitors’ in this new decade we are delighted to welcome the players, officials and supporters of BEDWORTH UNITED who make their sixth visit to the Stadium. This is to be our second meeting with Bedworth in the Central Division (the previous one was eight seasons ago) but we also played out three Premier Division match and one in the FA Trophy. Our four league meetings have always previewed a season of significance for either or both of our sides. In 2011/12 – Bedworth’s only victory here so far – our lads went on to win the Southern League Central, and we were promoted to the Premier Division joined as play-off winners by our visitors. Our three Premier Division meetings resulted in two wins for us and one draw, but each time Bedworth suffered relegation at the end of that
season. The one additional tie was an FA Trophy First Qualifying Round tie in 2015/16 and that resulted in a 2-0 home victory. With both sides relegated from the Premier Division at the end of last season both were looking to bounce back to Step Three at the first opportunity but sadly that is looking unlikely despite half the season remaining. Bedworth are currently nine points adrift of the play-off places but that is thirteen points better off than our lads, following their 3-2 home victory over Barton Rovers last Saturday. Club History The first Bedworth Town football club is believed to have been formed in 1895 when several matches were played against other local teams. They became founder members of the Nuneaton and District League in 1898, but by 1900 the club had disbanded. Another team, Bedworth Evening Combination School became forerunners of the second Bedworth Town club five years later in 1905 finishing runners up in the Second Division of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League in 1904/5 season. The ECS
changed their name to Bedworth Town on winning promotion and stayed in existence until the early 1920’s. A third club came on the scene in 1925, when Collycroft United, formed in 1916 became the third team to name themselves Bedworth Town. This was the most successful of the pre-war clubs, they were members of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League and spent one season in 1936/7 in the Central Amateur League. They played as Bedworth Central for the 1938/39 seasons but unfortunately folded in 1940. The last club to become Bedworth Town was formed in 1947 and as a semipro club secured membership of the Birmingham Combination league winning the Championship in successive seasons 1948/49 and the 1949/50 seasons. In 1951/52 they had their best FA Cup ever. After defeating Nuneaton, the 3rd Qualifying round they lost to Kettering when a victory would have given them an away tie at Bristol Rovers. A lack of success and problems off the field saw Bedworth Town change their name to Bedworth United in 1968. In 1972 they obtained membership of the Southern League Division One North
floodlights having been erected at The Oval in 1970/1. The club made rapid strides into the Premier Division when the league was reformed in 1982 and they finished 5th in 1982 and were stable in that division until a poor run saw them relegated at the end of the 1988/9 season. After two years away (including one in the Southern Premier League and one in the Northern League), Bedworth returned to the Southern League Division One Central ahead of the 2014/15 season. In their first season back at Division One Central level, Bedworth were promoted via the play-offs with a 2-0 win against Barton Rovers in the final on 4 May 2015. Season 2015-16 in the Southern Premier was disrupted by continued squad issues (injuries & suspension) which saw The Greenbacks struggling to avoid relegation, despite a late-rally they were relegated as 4th-bottom club, just failing to avoid the ‘dreaded drop’. United returned to play in the 201617 season in the Northern Premier First Division South. Player Profiles STUART STORER (manager) Stuart took over the managers’ role at Bedworth at Christmas 2013. The club were looking doomed at the foot of the table. Fortunately with the staff and players he brought to the club all rallied around to fight off relegation. Stuart played professional football for 19 years. Birmingham City, Wigan, Everton, Bolton Wanderers,
Exeter City and Brighton and Hove Albion amassing 400 first class appearances. He played non league with Kettering, Chesham and Hinckley, before becoming a coach, he holds an A licence in coaching. ADAM HARRISON Adam is a 20 year old goal keeper; he started his football career at Leicester City, where after serving an apprenticeship was released. He then joined BUFC and had a very successful season with the under 21 team, also making several appearances for the first team too, where he performed very well. DAN CRANE Dan returned to the club after taking a brief foray into managing being the Assistant at Gresley but has decided that its not time to hang up the gloves yet. Dans footballing CV includes West Brom as a youngster and a wealth of other non league clubs. Dan is great at controlling his back line and his voice can be heard all over the park his experience is great to have around the club. LUKE ROWE Luke is a local lad and he has grown in stature under the guidance of the coaching team. The 26 year old left sided player was one of the managers‘ first signings from Hinckley 5 years ago, where he played under our manager there. He has played in New Zealand for Wellington making several appearances for the New Zealand national youth team. He always seem
to feature in the end of year award ceremonies. ELLIOT PARROTT Elliot is becoming quite an experienced player despite his young age. The combative midfielder was a youngster at Coventry City and played for Nuneaton Town youth team before joining Bedworth. He will have made approximately 100 appearances for the club and can play in a number of positions with relative ease. He swept up all the awards at last season’s promotion presentation evening. TOM SHARPE Tom is a calm assured defender; the 30 year old has had good football league experience earlier in his career at Bury before spending time with Kidderminister Harriers and Worcester City making an abundance of appearances in the conference leagues. His stop start season last year still led to him showing his quality when we needed it and we feel his experience will be valuable in this seasons campaign. RICARDO DUDLEY Ricardo joined Bedworth at the beginning of the 2017/18 promotion season from Boldmere St Michael. This strong defender started off his time at Bedworth a tad shaky but once he settled his development for this 19 year old has been quite rapid with some strong performances during the season and is fast becoming a fan favourite he has no problems with putting his body on the line for the
team as his recent head wound is testament to. ALEX TROKE Alex started out at Walsall before accepting a scholarship at Notts County Paul Ince offered him a contract but unfortunately cost saving measures led to all first year professionals being released. Alex then moved on to Eastwood Town for 2 seasons then to Grantham and 2 very successful years at Carlton, then signed for Coalville where he was the clubs top scorer. Joined Bedworth at the start of the 2017-18 season and was instrumental in the promotion winning season.
Ashanti at only 20 years old is a quick direct technical striker with quick feet and an eye for goal, having Bromsgrove Sporting, Solihull Moors, Mansfield Town and Birmingham City on his footballing CV Ashanti is definitely one to watch this season. CAL TEMPLETON Cal has represented Northern Ireland at both U17 and U19 level an is a product of Leicester City Academy having spent 9 years there. A tough tackling centre half with a no nonsense attitude to the game Cal will no doubt be one to watch this season.
REECE BLACKMORE
MITCH PIGGON
Reece is now in his 3rd season with Bedworth, Reece as a youngster up until U16 was playing at Derby county where he then moved on to play youth football at Kettering Town. Bedworth signed him from Coventry Sphinx and since then he has been a regular in the team becoming a fan favourite because of his combative style of play.
Mitch has already wrote his name in the Greenbacks history books having scored here in his previous seasons with us in the Playoff final against Beaconsfield. Mitch is a good old fashioned centre forward who knows where the goal is and has no problem putting the ball in the net with either foot.
LYNUS KING Lynus joined us from Oadby Town as a junior he had a spell with Stoke before moving to Holland and becoming part of both Ajax and Feyonoords youth systems. On returning to the Uk he has had spells at Leicester Nirvana, Nuneaton,Stamford and Gresley. Lynus preferred position is as either a Right Back or a holding midfielder ASHANTI PRYCE
RICHARD BLYTHE Richard is a centre midfielder who is happy to mix it but is equally good with the ball at his feet, Richard is another player who has returned to the club after a season at Rugby. He was club captain in the promotion winning season and hopes that he can relieve that glory again this season. KHAELLEM BAILEY_NICHOLS Khaellem was unlucky with injuries in his last season with Bedworth but still
managed a return of 10 goals in 17 appearances a lot of which was from the bench. Khaellem is a strong attacking player with lots of pace who defenders will dread coming up against. JOSH STEELE Josh is a new signing for this season and has impressed down the left side in preseason both defensively and going forward and will no doubt bring a lot of energy to the squad. Previous clubs include Nuneaton and last season at Rugby BLAIZE PUNTER Blaize is an Antigua and Barbados international he is a strong reliable centre half who has joined us from Rushden and Diamonds. He started his footballing career at Mansfield then moved on to Quorn and Rugby before settling at Rushden and Diamonds where he made over 50 appearances before joining the Greenbacks early this season. DAN PRESTON Dan started his career at Birmingham and has played at numerous non league clubs both at this level and higher. He can list Hereford, Telford, Tamworth and Stratford amongst others on his footballing CV . Dan is a no nonsense defender who doesn’t mind putting his head in where it hurts and has proved that since joining us from Nuneaton.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town For the first time in a year St Neots recorded back to back league victories completing their first league ‘double’ of the season in the process. The three points elevated them to within two points of their victims’ Kempston Rovers, with two matches in hand, and not even the news that bottom side Wantage had won for the first time this season, dented the ‘feel good’ warmth instilled by the three valuable league points, thanks to the influence of caretaker Manager Matt Clements. Two first half goals put the host side well in control and they went on to score five times in a match for only the second time since December 2017. Without regular goalkeeper James Philp unavailable for the first time this season, St Neots called upon U18 keeper Jacob Crosby who will be deservedly able to remember his senior debut with great pride. He was one of two changes made in the starting line-up, with Jonny Butler returning in place of Lewis Foster. Joe Sutton and Sam Gomersall both contributed two goals apiece in what could prove to be a significant springboard towards a much improved second half of the season. St Neots had the first chance with Panny Boxer just unable to reach an early cross in front of goal. The visitors clearly keen to compete also had an early chance but Stefan Bailey up for a set piece shot over the bar. The first half took some time to find rhythm with injuries causing unusually lengthy delays and no less than eight minutes added time prior to the break. Visiting keeper Michael Hudson was lucky not to concede a goal when he mishandled but recovered but he was helpless and 29 minutes when Sam Gomersall advanced om goal to unleash an unstoppable finish into the corner of the

net to put St Neots deservedly ahead. Nine minutes later the advantage was doubled when the impressive Ferdinand BellToxtle sped down the left leaving two defenders in his wake, to cross to the near post for Joe Sutton to claim his second goal in successive holiday matches. Gomersall then volleyed high over the bar following a corner and St Neots ended the half in control although their young keeper had to produce an impressive added time save to deny Kempston’s leading scorer Jake Newman an unlikely reply.
St Neots: Crosby, Shaw, Smith, Butler, Goode, Boxer (T), Gomersal, Bell-Toxtle, Mutswunguma, Boxer (P), Sutton
After a tight start to the second half St Neots settled nerves with a well-conceived third goal – the produce of a sweet move, as Sam Gomersall turned in a Sutton low cross for a 3-0 lead. St Neots then made their first substitution introducing Lee Watkins for the limping Panny Boxer. Kempston should have reduced the arrears on the hour when an uncharacteristic lapse in the St Neots defence saw Newman with the goal at his mercy and the home keeper stranded. Fortunately for St Neots his lob passed the wrong side of the far post, and two minutes later the visitors were made to pay for this slip when Prince Mutswunguma darted into the penalty area to finish a clever move involving BellToxtle and Sutton for a 3-0 lead. Crosby then distinguished himself with a full length save to deny a Newman free kick, but the visiting player was not to be denied because on 72 minutes he netted from close range to pull back a consolation goal. However, that did little to deny the inevitable because after 78 minutes St Neots’ four goals advantage was restored when the tenacious Joe Sutton claimed his second goal of the match directly from a corner. Crosby continued to impress saving bravely at the feet of Sam Johnson and St Neots cruised to victory.
Kempston: Hudson, Stratton, Brennan, Wright, Bailey, Sage, Goodman, Newman, McLeod, Baker

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Yaxley
3
Yaxley’s Christmas came a few days late as the visiting St Neots’ defence needlessly gifted them two first half goals and then added the bonus of a carelessly conceded penalty just before the hour. It was totally unexplained how a side that had picked up six points in their two holiday matches could just three days later produce such an inept performance. Yaxley had themselves been struggling with just on win in their last seven outings but they dominated the match for the first hour against a visiting side that had little method or challenge. Beaten to almost all second balls and outmuscled in the tackles, St Neots were a pale shadow of their previous two performances, despite there being only one team change from the New Year’s Day thumping victory over Kempston. That one change saw the predictable return of regular keeper James Philp to replace U18 custodian Jake Crosby, but the remaining lineup was unchanged. However, the confidence had drained away and St Neots were a side without belief or ideas. Then in an amazing turnaround having been reduced to ten men, with substitute Lee Watkins picking up a straight red card after a fourteen minutes substitute appearance, they roared back in the final fifteen minutes to score twice and lay siege to the Yaxley goal. The final twist in the tale was in added time as defender Tom Boxer picked up his second yellow card to join Watkins in an early bath and both will face suspensions in the important January fixtures. Neither side began well with little positive play in the first quarter of an hour except a booking for home defender Dalton Bettles for upending Joe Sutton. Then a very naive display of defending gifted the first goal as Liam Hook lifted a 50 yards cross field ball over the St Neots defence
St Neots Town to home skipper Dan Cotton in acres of space. He skipped past flat-footed defender Stevan Shaw and beat James Philp with a low shot inside his near post that the keeper could only help into the net. This buoyed Yaxley and in the next ten minutes both former St Neots player Sam Bennett and Cotton were left with time and space, but both directed their efforts over the cross bar. St Neots had not managed a single shot on goal when after 23 minutes the host side doubled their lead. It was another goal that should never have been conceded as Joe Butterworth floated in an inswinging corner that Philp totally misjudged, and the ball went over his head to the far post where the unmarked Dalton Bettles headed joyfully home. Sam Gomersall tried to get St Neots moving but he lacked support when the ball was in the Yaxley half and the closest St Neots came to reduce the arrears was from a 37th minute Aaron Smith corner that was only cleared as far as Tom Boxer whose lob was mishandled by home keeper Aaron Butcher but a defender came to his aid to clear. The second half saw an early lengthy effort by Aaron Smith comfortably saved but St Neots clearly had to up their game, so Manager Matt Clements made a positive move replacing defensive midfielder Jonny Butler with Lee Watkins to adopt a more attacking approach. However, within three minutes of the change Tom Boxer clumsily brought down Dan Jarvis in the penalty area and from the spot home skipper Dan Cotton stoked the ball home for his second goal of the match and a 3-0 advantage for his side. Sadly, Watkins’ period on the pitch lasted just fourteen minutes before a misjudged tackle earned him a sending off and reduced St Neots to ten men. The final
2 fifteen minutes saw the match turned on its head. After 78 minutes St Neots pulled a goal back as from a Smith corner, Panny Boxer forced home from close range, and this sent the home defence into a panic. Then with four minutes left the lively Sam Gomersall converted a cross from the left to make it 3-2. St Neots maintained the pressure for the limited remaining time but a flurry of late yellow cards including the dismissal of Tom Boxer saw play sporadic, leaving Yaxley relieved to have taken full points despite the surrender of the early domination. St Neots: Philp, Shaw, Smith, Butler, Goode, Boxer (T), Gomersal, Bell-Toxtle, Mutswunguma, Boxer (P), Sutton Subs: Watkins (for Butler 53 mins), Foster (for Sutton 59 mins), Massaro, Clarke and O’Hara. Cards: Watkins (RED 69 mins), Boxer (T) (RED – 2 x Y – 59 & 90+3 mins), Boxer (P) (Y – 85 mins), Shaw (Y – 90 mins) Goals: Boxer (P) (77 mins), Gomersall (86 mins) Yaxley: Butcher, Duncliffe, Garner, Butterworth, Bettles, Salmon, Bennett, Hook, Earps, Cotton, Jarvis Subs: N’Kala (for Earps 78 mins), Watson, Waumsley and Nolan Cards: Bettles (Y – 12 mins), Hook (Y – 90+1 mins) Goals: Cotton 2 (15 & 59 mins), Bettles (23 mins) Referee: Mark Tinsley (Nottingham) Attendance: 175
