Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green G

ood afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Redditch United and we hope your brief stay with us here in Cambridgeshire is a pleasant one before a safe trip home later this evening.

Last Saturday saw us entertain second placed Stourbridge and for the first 45 minutes, it would

have been near on impossible for the uninformed to have known which team was at which end of the table. The lads worked so hard, playing with tempo and gusto in closing their opponents down and we deservedly took the lead with an absolute corker from Dylan Williams form outside the box, hopefully now back to his best. Sadly we couldn’t add to our tally or hold onto the slender lead and we succumbed to another good goal and a poorly defended effort so , over all , a better performance but not quite good enough to gain anything from the game. Today we welcome back Mssrs Parr and Short from suspension and this will undoubtedly strengthen the spine of the team. Talking of welcomes, it gives me great pleasure to welcome both ANDREA BORG, who joins us on loan from Peterborough United and JORGINHO GOMEZ, Who both arrived last week and featured in Saturday’s squad.

Congratulations to DEVANTE STANLEY, sadly currently sidelined through injury, who, after a string of excellent displays at right back, has been voted Supporters’ Player of the Month for November. All being well, Devante will receive his bottle of fizz prior to kick off at tomorrow’s game. Don’t forget that mechandise is on sale both on the Gregory Suite and online at:

https://stneotstownfc.ktckts.com

S

o don’t miss out on those last minute pressies and of course tickets to future matches and events can also be purchase here too at .

Back to the game and as ever, please do get behind the lads from the off.

From the Dugout‌ With

A warm welcome to our visitors today and of course to all the Saints fans. After a very good performance against a very good Stourbridge side I praise my players as I feel

a point was deserved at least, but when things are against you, you don’t always get the rub of the green. There it is though, but whilst it is fair and entitled to criticise, I want to thank all my staff for their amazing, professional efforts and the ethic they show and the core group of this squad who have been honest, hard working and despite the knocks and position we find ourselves in they are a credit to the club. What I see behind the scenes week to week, I know the combination of staff and players will turn this corner and reap the rewards they deserve.

With Andrea Borg, Jorginhio and the returning Finn Iron into the ranks it will be one to two

more players one hundred percent added still. Those players will all appear by our next game on the 18th away to Barwell to strengthen, aid the core of this squad and add more importantly help us climb the table.

So I back and thank my staff and players and we will stick together and performances will turn into points and they will get what they deserve. Hope you all enjoy the game

ANOTHER new record was equalled in the National League this week. Chesterfield's 1-1 draw with Bromley on Tuesday night was their NINTH successive stalemate, breaking a club record and matching the longest ever sequence in the top five divisions in English football, joining the feat of Woking in the 2003-04 Conference season. It's a run that sees Martin Allen's men ensconced in the relegation zone in their first ever season of Non-League football, although bizarrely they are currently on the best and worst run of form in club history. The Spireites are 19 league games without a win – breaking a new club record for the longest winless run – but Zavon Hines' injury-time penalty which helped secure a share of the spoils against Bromley at the Proact Stadium also means the club are unbeaten in 12 games – their best run of form for 12 years. Such a strange sequence will naturally draw both positive and negative reactions but does express how fine lines can determine the short-term future of both club and individual. If the Spireites could have turned just four of those nine draws into wins they would have turned their 20-point haul from 22 matches into a top-ten place and play-off contention. And look at the manager himself. Allen is under intense pressure at the Proact for their underwhelming start to the season, although it's interesting that no-one in the know is writing off the Spireites off just yet. You need only look back to see Tranmere Rovers turn a struggling start into promotion back to the elite 92 and with the top seven competing for promotion places these days, anything can happen. And let's face it, who would want to face Chesterfield in a knockout encounter at the Proact in front of 8,000 roaring home supporters? Allen remains a man of mystery in football. He does things slightly differently to the rest, hence his 'Mad Dog' nickname but few could argue his methods are effective. He's already taken Barnet to the Conference title, in 2014-15, having won the League Two title with Gillingham a year earlier. Chesterfield's season will reach the halfway stage when they entertain title favourites Salford City at the Proact on December 8. Who would bet against them stunning the Ammies and launching a second-half surge up the table? Fine lines remember.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

REDDITCH UNITED FC Joined League: 1870 Chairman: Chris Swan Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/redditchunitedfootballclub

The Reds are one of the longest established football clubs in the Midlands, starting out as Redditch Town in the Birmingham Combination League in 1891 and being crowned first winners of the Worcestershire Senior Cup in 1894. The club prospered as Redditch in the 1930s and again 20 years later when they were Birmingham Combination champions in 1952 and 1955. In 1971, United was added to the name and in November of that year, the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. A record crowd of 4,500 rammed into the Valley Stadium to see the Reds draw 1-1 with Division Four side Peterborough United before losing 6-0 in the reply. The following season saw them join the Southern League and were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 1975-76 campaign having scored more than 100 goals in the process. They were founder members of the Alliance Premier League at the start of the 1979/80 but struggled against the likes of Barnet and Yeovil Town in what would evolve into the Football Conference. The club then plied its trade in the Southern League for more than 20 years the highlight

of which was another run to the first round of the FA Cup in 1989 before losing 3-1 to Conference side Merthyr Tydfil in front of another sell-out crowd. The club made the headlines at the end of the 1997-98 season, playing nine games in nine days due to a backlog of fixtures brought about by the poor weather.

Double promotion At the end of the 2003/04 season, the Reds clinched an historic double promotion under the guidance of manager Rod Brown. Having secured the Southern League Western Division, the club then won two play-off matches to secure a place in the newly formed Conference North where they stayed for seven seasons. Entrepreneur Chris Swan took control of the club in March 2011, clearing outstanding debts to guarantee its continued survival. Together with his wife Sallie in her role as vice-chairman, Swan began a strategy of developing the club’s community links, working with schools and other organisations across the town and surrounding area. The Junior section was relaunched and there are 50 teams playing under the Redditch United banner including boys, girls and

disabled sides in addition to a thriving academy set-up offering full-time courses at the club.

Strategic alliances The Club has worked hard to forge strategic alliances with the likes of Redditch Borough Council, West Mercia Police, Birmingham City Girls and West Bromwich Albion Foundation with the first community hub established offering football to disadvantaged youngsters. With manager Liam McDonald in charge, the Reds won the Worcestershire Senior Cup and a number of players made the move into full-time football including Jermaine Hylton who joined Swindon Town and Omari Sterling-James who went to Cheltenham Town. Having just missed out on the play-offs in 2014/15, the club finished runners-up the following year only to lose out to neighbours Leamington in the play-offs. In 2016, the club worked with Redditch Borough Council, the FA and the Football Foundation as a ÂŁ900,000 investment programme was carried out which saw a state-of-the-art 3G playing surface installed as well as substantial upgrades to changing facilities. The newlook facilities were officially

opened by Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch. The start of the 2016/17 season saw a number of exciting commercial deals signed including one with new stadium sponsors Trico. A long-term partnership with kit suppliers Sondico was also agreed ahead of the new campaign. A thousand people play on the 3G pitch each week, we have excellent community links and an exciting first team looking to challenge under the guidance of newly-appointed manager Paul Smith. We have ambitious plans in place, both on and off the field. The future for the Reds is looking bright.

St. Neots Town versus Hayes and Yeading FC

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots Town After a tepid first half performance and a half-time deficit, comeback kings Stourbridge moved closer to league leaders Kettering with two second half goals in a four minutes spell. St Neots seemed to be coping well before the break without their two suspended central defenders Taylor Parr and Russell Short, but after half time the strong visiting side moved fully into gear to show just why they are in the top two places in the table. Based on previous performances this was a muchimproved overall showing by St Neots and Manager Matt Clements will have been pleased the way that the versatile Tom Wood and occasionally selected Dan Olaniran coped with the potent Stourbridge attack that is the best in the league. Clements also introduced loan player Andrea Borg from Peterborough United and he had a quiet debut. Once again back in goal Finlay Iron made several good saves whilst at the other end St Neots carved out a host of half chances but once again, they were let down by their finishing. After a quiet start with much of the play in midfield it was St Neots who made the important break through after 14 minutes. Gary Wharton drifted from left to right to pick up a pass and his cross was knocked down by Stuart Pierpoint, but only to the edge of the area where Dylan Williams picked up the ball to score with a low crisp shot beyond the dive of visiting keeper James Wren. Nabil Shariff then shot wide after neat play by Lee Watkins but Stourbridge created openings on the break and just before the half hour Finlay Iron at to dive

Stourbridge

bravely amongst flying boots to smother the ball after Luke Benbow had directed a Robbie Thompson-Brown free kick across goal. St Neots should have extended their lead before the break as Williams sent an ambitious effort high over the bar, Andrea Borg saw his effort blocked and Gary Wharton should have done better than shoot wide after neat play by Johnny Herd. However the visitors always looked sharp in attack when they did break forward and the lively Benbow forced an important save from Iron in time added at the end of the first 45 minutes. It looked a different Stourbridge side that emerged after the break. They looked full of the confidence they seemed to have lacked in the first half and the St Neots side were pushed back on the defensive. Iron became the busiest man on the field saving efforts by Benbow and Callum Powell, but St Neots did show some counter-attacking tendencies with Williams firing wildly over the bar after visiting keeper James Wren had saved well from Nabil Shariff, and Gary Wharton being only inches from a Watkins cross in front of a gaping goal. However, it was the visiting side who were beginning to boss the game and after 58 minutes following a quickly taken free kick Luke Benbow levelled the scores with a smart finish. Then just four minutes later St Neots conceded a second goal from a set piece. A ThompsonBrown free kick found the head of Pierpoint drawing a fingertip save over the bar by Iron but from the result corner Paul McCone rose above the defence to put his side ahead. Iron then produced a full-length save from

2

Powell to keep St Neots hopes alive, and St Neots thought they had created an equaliser following a Herd corner, as Dan Olaniran curled in a shot that beat the keeper but clipped the crossbar. St Neots then sent on two substitutes to freshen up their attack, but the experienced Stourbridge defence funnelled back to stifle their best efforts and the home side looked unable to seriously threaten the visitors’ goal.
