Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good evening everyone and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium for the first on four consecutive home BetVictor Southern League Divison One Central matches.

This evening we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Coleshill Town for tonight’s rearranged fixture and we hope you enjoy your brief stay with us.

Well here we go then, four home games on the spin beginning with tonight’s first

ever visit of Coleshill Town, closely followed by Didcot Town (Saturday), Corby Town (Tuesday) and then a local derby with Biggleswade FC the following Saturday (February 1st).

The new era under the leadership of Barry Corr is now well under way and despite not picking up any points in his first two games, performances have seen an immediate improvement. I’d like to welcome the four lads who have joined us on long term loans from Cambridge United as part of our collaboration – Finley Iron, Tom Dickens, Lewis Simper and Joe Neal and I hope your time here with us is, as always, enjoyable and productive and if recent showings have been anything to go by,, we are in for a decent second half of the season. Away from the pitch we have a few decent events coming

up, flyers of which can be found elsewhere in this edition and keep an eye out for more announcements of events in the coming weeks.

As always, I ask you all to get behind the lads from the first whistle. Performances are now there and points will surely follow, Keep The Faith and be part of the Saints CORR-poration

Come On You Saints

Firstly, on behalf of everyone at St Neots Town I’d like to welcome everyone from Coleshill Town to our stadium this evening. I’m so excited to be the new manager of this football club and am really appreciative to be given the opportunity. I’m not long retired from a playing career and this is my first managerial role but it’s something I’ve been preparing for, for a long time. Football has always been my passion. I think that showed when I played and I hope now it will show in my team. I come in as part of a new collaboration between St Neots and Cambridge United. We hope that this will be beneficial for both clubs, bringing extra financial stability to St Neots and giving some of the young professionals at Cambridge exposure to senior football. I’m aware that some supporters may have reservations about this link up, but I want to assure you all that I will be totally committed to St Neots. I know about the traditions of the club and how much St Neots means to so many people. I do hope to develop both Cambridge and St Neots players, but ultimately, I want to win football matches and will do everything with the best interests of St Neots Town Football Club in mind. I’m writing these notes on Saturday evening having just lost to Dunstable in a really competitive game. Whilst I’m disappointed about the result, there were certainly many positives to take from the game. I really think that given time we will start winning football matches and climb the table as I’m sure we’re better than our league position would suggest. Thank you for welcoming me to the club. Let’s get behind the lads tonight. I’m sure of a hard-working and committed performance and hopefully that will lead to a win.

With Barry Corr

The managers probably won’t thank us for saying it but it’s always great to see Non-League talent move up into the Football League. We’ve seen a host of players make the step up just in this past week – all with their own stories to tell. Josh March has worked his way up the divisions with Alvechurch and, after hitting 24 goals in 27 games for Leamington, is moving up to League Two with Forest Green. March told us in last week’s paper of how NonLeague football has prepared him for the step-up – one he wasn’t ever sure he’d get a crack at a few years ago. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild quickly made an impression with Bromley during this campaign and he’s been snapped up by Portsmouth. Then Barnet’s Jack Taylor is stepping up to Peterborough United – a club well known for mining Non-League over the years with great success – for a fee of £500,000 which could rise to £1 million with add-ons. Our columnist and BT Sport commentator Adam Virgo recently wrote that Taylor is the best midfielder in the National League. Perhaps Posh were reading! The moves didn’t stop there with Rob Atkinson joining Oxford United from Eastleigh. The young defender has impressed for the Spitfires this season having joined in the summer from Basingstoke Town. It just goes to show how much talent there is throughout Non-League football. Of course, for the managers it’s not great timing. They’ve lost important players at an important part of the season. It’s not as straightforward as just going out and handpicking a replacement. It does, however, reflect well on them and their clubs. Non-League football thrives and survives on giving young footballers the opportunity to showcase their talent and the platform to push onto the League. Are there more footballers just waiting for their chance? You can be sure of it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Matlock Town have had their ground broken into for the third time in three months. They certainly aren’t the only Non-League club to suffer at the hands of mindless thieves. It is soul destroying for the hard-working volunteers that put in all the hours they can to their club only to have to clear up the mess. Unfortunately many Non-League clubs and grounds are soft targets. Often tucked away and with alcohol and other stock, or the prospect of cash left inside – they are an appealing proposition. Clubs no doubt have insurance but the costs of additional security only add an extra burden.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

COLESHILL TOWN Year founded: 1894 Chairman: Paul Billing Club Website: www.coleshilltownfc.co.uk

WELCOME TO ALL, ESPECIALLY TO THE PLAYERS, OFFICIALS AND SUPPORTERS OF COLESHILL TOWN. Club History

Promotion to the top flight of the Combination soon followed in 1975 and there they stayed, apart from one season in Div 1, for more than thirty years. Coleshill’s greatest achievements during that time saw them as M.F.C. Premiership runners up in 1983/84 and winning the Walsall Senior Cup in 1983. Other highlights included a run in the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1988/89 beating Birmingham City then holding Wolverhampton Wanderers to a draw. The replay at Molineux was against the Wolves first team including the outstanding young strikers Steve Bull and Andy Mutch. The Colemen more than matched their Black Country opponents for over an hour. Although Town tired and conceded late goals they prevented Steve Bull from

scoring, something that the Scottish International team failed to achieve at Hampden Park a few weeks later. Old Boys include Danny Hagen, the former Irish International who played in the U.E.F.A. Cup Final for Wolves in 1972, but our greatest son is without doubt Gary Shaw who was picked up by Villa whilst playing for Coleshill as a sixteen year old. In more recent times the club enjoyed the 1997/98 season under Martin Socket who led the side to the top of the Premiership before leaving to join Dr Martin’s VS Rugby. A succession of managers have come and gone, usually taking all the players with them. Mick Beadle steadily improved the side in the four years he was with the club, but former Kettering player and Bedworth Ass Manager, Carl Adams was appointed manager in September 2008 and he led Coleshill to the Midland Combination Premiership Championship for the first time in the club’s history, clawing back a 22

point deficit and beating Highgate United to the title on goal difference, on the last day of the season. Fifteen games into the new season Carl Adams stood down quoting family and work commitments the reason for his departure. Neil Kitching and Martin Socket were quickly installed as a joint management with the Reserve team that season winning the Challenge Bowl. In October 2005 Coleshill were awarded Adult Standard Charter status by the football Association and in 2012 awarded Junior Standard Chartered Status and maintain those standards today. In 2011-12, Coleshill Town reserves won the MFC Reserve Division Two tile and were runners up in the Challenge Bowl cup final, in 2013-14 finished runner ups in the MFL Reserve Division One and in 2015-16 were crowned champions of the Reserve League and were runners in in their League Cup. In 2012-13 the club had

three managers with Paul Casey being appointed mid way through the season with the thankless task of saving the club from relegation with two games to go this task was achieved. The U18’s finished a credible third in the floodlight league and were finalists in the Birmingham Youth Cup. 2013-14 was a record breaking season, finishing 4th the Midland Football alliance the highest ever position in the clubs history breaking all previous win, goal scored etc stats and he took the team to the fourth round of the FA Vase narrowly missing out on victory in the North east at Dunston. 2014-2015 was yet again a record breaking season, finishing 2nd the newly formed Midland Football League breaking the 201314 season records for the highest ever position in the clubs history breaking all previous win, goal scored etc. stats and he took the team to the semi-final of the Birmingham Senior cup missing out on a place in the final taking Birmingham City all the way to penalties. 2015-16 proved a little more difficult, with a new state of the art 3G pitch not completed until October, the first two months of the season the Coleman spent their time playing all game’s

away from home. However the team finished in 5th reaching the fourth round of the FA Vase and the third qualifying round in the FA Cup.

Southern League, our manager Cameron has high expectations for the season and to create a basis of moving higher in the nonleague pyramid system.

2016-17 the development of players from feeder teams worked well with the first half of the season under Paul Casey consolidated performances in the league, Paul left before the Christmas period with assistant Manager Simon Lyons taking over the manager’s role. Under Simon he further consolidated performances narrowly missing out on promotion finishing in second place and reaching the semifinal of the FA Vase losing the aggregate tie over two legs to the eventual winners South Shields. The first home leg tie saw a record crowd of 3,465 at the Pack Meadow.

In total at senior level and junior team status, we have a number of teams all supported by a professional and dedicated board of directors and volunteers who believe in developing and offering the ability for all to play the wonderful game at Coleshill Town Football Club.

In 2017-18 ex Aston Villa player Cameron Stuart took over the reins along with his challenge to bring promotion to club, this he achieved along with an appearance at Walsall FC in the Midland Football League, League Cup final. For the season 2019 -20 the club enjoyed a successful season and challenged for a play-off place only to fade away in the final few games. So, here we are in our second season in the

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town Sadly, for recently appointed St Neots Manager Barry Corr, his reign did not start well, as he watched his reshaped side beaten at home by the odd goal in three. Having said that, the home produced overall a better performance than their previous at Yaxley, but goals win games and despite having the better share of play in both halves, St Neots were left without anything to show for themselves except disappointment. Bedworth was reduced to ten men 25 minutes from time when Cal Templeton picked up a second yellow card with a desperately late tackle to break up a very promising St Neots attack, and that set the scene for the remainder of the match as the visitors pulled off their strikers who had contributed both goals, packed their defence and wasted as much time as possible, picking up four late cautions to their cost. With both former St Neots’ skippers this season, Tam Boxer and Lee Watkins both suspended, the Manager made four team changes leaving out goalkeeper James Philp, Panny Boxer and the departing Fernando Bell-Toxtle and bringing in Cambridge United loanees Finley Iron and Thomas Dickens and recalling Jacob Joseph and Joe Massaro. With other loan players set to join the squad, there is bound to be further changes as St Neots seek to move away from the wrong end of the league table. The match was preceded by a minutes’ silence in memory of Club record scorer Francis Brand who had passed away earlier in the week. St Neots began really brightly and dominated play for the opening 25 minutes. Faster to the ball and able to push the visitors back in defence they created openings as Jacob Joseph’s telling cross found Sam Gomersall and only a brave block by Elliot Parrott prevented

1

Bedworth United

an early goal. Joe Massaro then shot disappointingly over the bar after a good build up and then an off-balance Joseph screwed his shot wide. However, after 17 minutes St Neots were deservedly ahead as Prince Mutswunguma ghosted into the area to head home Aaron Smith’s searching cross, claiming his eighth league goal of the campaign. Prince then had a second effort cleared off the line by a defender, but St Neots were failing to find an end product to their possession, and the visitors grew in confidence. Then after 28 minutes the home side failed to pick up Luke Keen who cut inside his marker to cross for Mitchell Piggon to send a low shot through a crowd of players past the unsighted goalkeeper – their first significant shot on target! Confidence seemed to drain from the St Neots players who were now having to concentrate on defence as Bedworth looked rejuvenated. It was then little surprise when the visitors scored a second goal three minutes before half time when Iron seemed to hesitate as tried to close down Luke Keen who was clear of the defence, but the visiting forward skilfully netted with an angled finish. Early in the second half St Neots introduced Panny Boxer to replace Joe Massaro to try to rediscover their early sparkle, and then the home side seemed to be handed a lifeline with the dismissal of Templeton but the variation in tactics by the visitors proved to be significant. Now with their superiority in numbers, St Neots should have taken full advantage, but they lacked the guile and imagination to test the packed visiting defence. A Prince effort was scraped off the line and the visitors seemed intent on stopping at nothing to preserve their narrow advantage. Following a corner Sam Goode shot wide and St Neots best effort was when

2

Stevan Shaw powered forward to take a return pass to breach the visiting defence, only for a defender to clear off the line with his goalkeeper beaten. St Neots just failed to make their extra player pay and although they never stopped trying, the home defence seldom looked threatened. Their final effort was a free kick within striking distance of goal, but Aaron Smith wasted the chance with an off-target finish. No doubt Mr Corr will seek to improve both the confidence and finishing of his new charges. St Neots: Iron, Shaw, Smith, Butler, Goode, Dickens, Joseph, Massaro, Gomersal, Sutton, Mutswunguma Subs: Boxer (P) (for Massaro 55 mins), Foster (for Joseph 84 mins), Badiani, Clarke and O’Hara. Cards: Boxer (P) (Y – 77 mins) Goals: Mutswunguma (17 mins) Bedworth: Crane, Dudley, Rowe, Parrott, Templeton, Preston, Truslove, Mulders, Piggon, Keen, Blythe Subs: Troke (for Piggon 68 mins), King (for Keen 79 mins), Harrison, Blackmore and Punter. SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL AFC Dunstable A penalty goal early in the second half, converted by former Saint Nathan Frater was sufficient to give the host side all three points in a closely fought match – the first in change for new St Neots boss Barry Corr. It was Dunstable’s first win in ten matches although they have drawn three in that sequence, and for St Neots it was disappointment again after competing well but failing to find the back of the net. Records show that it was the fifth time in their last seven league defeats that the margin of defeat has been just a single goal. Delight then for the home club and particularly for striker Nathan Frater who has scored in both matches against his former club this season, and frustration for St Neots who were hoping to move out of the bottom two in the league table for the first time since 7th September last year, with a win, with Kempston’s match at Welwyn waterlogged. Manager Corr made four changes to his first line up bringing in loanees Lewis Simper and Joe Neal from his ‘other’ club Cambridge United, and restoring back to the side the Boxer brothers Tom (after his one match ban) and Panny. Giving way were Sam Goode, Jonny Butler and Jacob Joseph (all on the bench) and Joe Massaro. The sides looked evenly matched early in the match on a very heavy pitch that had required a late inspection before it was declared fit for play. It was competitive with three cautions issued by the Referee in the opening half hour, but there was little significant goalmouth action. Tyler Fry had the first real chance for the home side after 12 minutes but his finish weak and easily covered by Finlay Iron. The keeper then had to be on his toes 11 minutes later when the lively Nick Elliot went around a defender to send in a low angled

1

St Neots Town

shot that was well saved. St Neots was sharing possession fairly evenly, but they never seemed to get players forward enough to seriously test the home defence and new striker Joe Neal was clearly lacking support. Prince Mutswunguma threatened briefly but lacked the finish required to test the Dunstable back line and St Neots’ general approach was far too predictable. The closest St Neots got to testing Dan Green in the home goal came ten minutes before the break when a three man move split the home defence to free Neal and he finished well putting the ball in the net, before being flagged offside. Dunstable began the second half with a flourish and St Neots was quickly penned back in their own half of the field. They paid the price for their dalliance when just seven minutes after the restart, Aaron Smith clumsily brought down Fry as he was heading away from goal and the Referee awarded a penalty kick that was efficiently despatched by Nathan Frater to give his side the lead. That setback seemed to jerk St Neots into some positive reaction and after a powerful downward Ryan Frater header from a Newman Carney corner had been luckily deflected wide, St Neots began to look more confident. Mutswunguma twice closed in on goal but both his efforts were wide of the target and then a Panny Boxer cross was well gathered by Green under pressure from two attacking St Neots players. Dunstable seemed content to preserve their narrow advantage pulling players back behind the ball to defend as a Lewis Simper shot was deflected with the home keeper out of position. Simper then honed-in on goal to be brought down earning the home player a caution, but St Neots wasted most of their possession by employing too

0

many long ball attacking moves that were snuffed out by the tall home defenders. St Neots tried to raise the tempo in the last ten minutes and following a corner a Sam Gomersall volley from outside the area was pushed away at full stretch by Green and the same visiting player then sent another effort narrowly over the crossbar. The home side were employing every timewasting tactic in the book as they clung on to their narrow lead as the six added minutes indicated, and during that additional period Green preserved his sides’ three points haul as he pushed a Joe Sutton volley over the crossbar. St Neots now have four consecutive home matches and harvesting points from these is now a gathering priority. St Neots: Iron, Shaw, Smith, Boxer (P), Dickens, Boxer (T), Gomersal, Simper, Neal, Sutton, Mutswunguma Subs: Foster (for Boxer (P) 89 mins), Goode, Butler, Joseph and Clarke.
