Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Heveryone and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium for the second

/ third of four consecutive home BetVictor Southern League Divison One Central matches.

Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Didcot Town / Corby Town for today’s fixture and we hope you enjoy your brief stay with us.

Well it seems I was right in my recent predictions on social media where I claimed

that after watching last Saturday’s unfortunate, unlucky defeat away at AFC Dunstable, when we finally clicked as a team, we would give someone a good hiding. This happened on Tuesday evening when we entertained Coleshill Town, who were sitting in 9th place and our game plan was executed perfectly, playing a high tempo pressing game. Nice to see youngsters Tom Dickens and Joe Neal get themselves on the score sheet and Lewis Simper can count himself very unlucky to see his rocket cannon back off the crossbar. It was an all round great team performance but quite rightly, Fin Iron took the man of the match plaudits with a quite outstanding display of goalkeeping. Lets hope the boys have now set the bar for future performances and we can look forward to a successful run in .

Also very pleased for Barry Corr and the rest of his

management team as this was indeed his first ever win as a manager and hopefully the first of many to come.

Back to today and as always, get behind the lads from the first whistle. Your participation in the game is as crucial as the efforts shown on the pitch. A hard game is expected in both games with Didcot currently one place and four points above us and Corby flying high at the top of the table.

Come On You Saints

On behalf of everyone here at St Neots Town, we would like to welcome all involved at both Didcot Town and Corby Town to our stadium. I’m writing these notes after a good performance and a great win over Coleshill Town on Tuesday evening. I thought there were some really impressive individual performances but more importantly it was the best I’ve seen from the team as a unit. I’m obviously pleased by this but also excited because I really believe we can still improve so much. When you win football matches I always think it’s down to the players. No matter how good your tactics are they won’t count for much if the players don’t bring energy, passion, commitment and a willingness to suffer on the pitch. I think I’m very lucky as the players have brought all these things. Sam Gomarsall is a good example. I thought he was exceptional on Tuesday night. The work he done for the team was outstanding and he also brought a lot of quality in possession. Sam is so enthusiastic and would run all day. Maybe previously, a lot of Sam’s running wasn’t as effective as it could have been but was much improved on Tuesday. This is where I hope I can add value, not just with Sam but with the team. I hope to harness our energy and commitment so that we run hard, but we do as a unit from an organised shape and at an intensity and structure that the opposition will struggle with, in and out of possession. I want the players to know exactly what is expected of them so there’s real clarity of what a good performance looks like.

All of these things will improve with time on the training pitch. This is why I’m so positive about our future. With time on the training pitch and with the players passion and commitment I’m convinced we’ll win football matches. Thank you for your support. And please get behind the lads again and create a positive atmosphere. I’m sure you’ll see passion and commitment, I hope that will bring two victories.

HEARD the one about the football team that have to play 16 games away and only eight at home? Meet Alderney FC – the club who have to raise £50,000 in an Island Games year, play four double headers a season in Guernsey’s Priaulx League and haven’t won a Muratti Vase game in 100 years. That’s only part of an amazing football story being played out on the small Channel Island located 60 miles from the south coast of England and less than ten miles from France. But despite their declining resident population clocking in at just under 1,800 people, Alderney football is in a positive place. Having finished runners-up in their league last year, they are once again battling it out for the title and they’re dreaming of ending their century long wait for a win in the Muratti when they take on Guernsey in March. A recent email into The NLP inbox asked if we’d fancy telling the story of football on Alderney. It was an interesting piece to write. My knowledge of the Muratti pretty much started and finished with Guernsey and Jersey playing in the final every year and the rivalry being fierce. But Alderney have been getting closer to a final appearance and they dream of upsetting the odds – and the programme printers, with chairman Reg Atkins joking they are printed before the result of Alderney’s semi-final is even played out! . “Twoand-a-half years ago we were playing Jersey and we were 1-0 down,” Atkins told me. “We equalised in the second minute of injury time. They went mad, the crowd went mad, I went mad. Unfortunately we then went and conceded a minute later! “So we have run them close. In 2002 was the first time we had a chance of winning when, would you believe, Chopper Harris was Jersey manager.” “We got it back to 2-1 and hit the bar in the 90th-minute. They hadn’t allowed for extra time and booked to be on the earlier plane.” Travel on and off Alderney can be an issue. It’s not uncommon for players to get stuck off the island when the fog sets in. In the winter flights don’t run so their regular leagues games in Guernsey are crammed in before October to avoid a late season pileup. When The NLP speaks to Atkins, he’s just off the phone after rearranging an away game that can’t be played because of a waterlogged pitch. The alternative of playing on an artificial surface would have only allowed for 30 minutes to get changed and back to the airport. And that wasn’t taking stoppage time into consideration. What is also remarkable is the players’ commitment to the cause and their league programme. Of the 24 games, they have to play two-thirds away. Each player forks out £900 towards the costs of flights and hotels for the double-headers. They’ll play one game on the Friday night before the second Saturday lunch time – imagine that in the Premier League! “No one is ever whinging about it – we all enjoy our football that much that we just get on with it,” manager Josh Concanen says. “We’re happy to help the club out financially because it’s a huge expense for an amateur football team. Especially with how much flights are to get off the island. You get fogged in but that’s just part of it.” Atkins has big ambition off the pitch. They want to extend the clubhouse, which currently only holds 35, while improving their changing rooms before eventually laying a 3G pitch. He also hopes an sports hall will be built one day as, currently, there is nowhere to train indoors. Jumble sales bring in funds and people can also pay £10 to become a Vice President. Whether 100 years of Muratti hurt will end this spring remains to be seen. But imagine the scenes in Victoria Street, which is always decked out in blue & white ahead of the big game. “They have the programmes printed before the semi-final has finished,” Atkins says. “It will be printed Jersey v Guernsey before the game is played. One year we’ll really upset them. It will just be lovely.”

DIDCOT TOWN Year founded: 1907 Chairman: John Bailey Club Website: www.didcottownfc.co.uk

A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR OXFORSHIRE VISITORS DIDCOT TOWN WHO VISIT US FOR THE FIRST TIME. Didcot are one of the quintet of Oxfordshire teams in our Division of the Southern League and that is a turnabout for us for in our previous history the only team from that County we had faced in league opposition was Banbury United. Our first meeting with Didcot was last September when we travelled to their Meadow Stadium where we were beaten by the odd goal in three after taking an early lead through Joe Sutton. Didcot levelled just before the break and went on to claim the winning goal nine minutes from time after we had been reduced to ten men. Since then both sides have struggled with results and our visitors currently two places ahead of us in the league table, lead us by just seven points having played one more match. A decade ago, Didcot had a brief stay at Step Three in the Southern

League Premier Division but the highlight in their history came four seasons ago when they reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup, beaten at home by Exeter City. Last season Didcot finished seventh in the table – just two places and four points shy of the play-off places. Earlier this season they progressed to the First Round Qualifying of the FA Cup where they were beaten at home by Poole Town, and in the FA Trophy they were beaten at home in the Preliminary Round by Larkhall Athletic. Club History The club was founded in 1907 and in their early days competed in the North Berks League from the 1910–11 season. They left the North Berks league at the end of the 1927–28 campaign and later joined the Reading League and then the Metropolitan League. They then became founder members of the Hellenic League in 1953, where they won the championship at the first attempt. Although they returned to the Metropolitan

League for the 1957–58 season they rejoined the Hellenic League Premier Division in 1963. They spent the next thirteen seasons in the premier division before being relegated to Division one at the end of the 1975–76 season, the same season they made their debut in the FA Cup; however, they bounced back up as champions of Division one the next season. They moved between the Hellenic League’s two divisions on two more occasions before they established themselves for the rest of their time in the top-flight of the Hellenic league from the 1995–96 season. In 2004–05, under manager Stuart Peace, they were only denied the title due to the deduction of one point for fielding an ineligible player in a 1–1 draw at Tuffley Rovers at the start of the season, but made up for it by beating A.F.C. Sudbury to claim the FA Vase. The following season they finally claimed the league title, becoming the first team in Hellenic League history to accrue 100 points in a season, and were thus promoted to the Southern League Division

One South & West. In May 2009 they gained promotion to the Southern League Premier Division, when they beat AFC Totton 2–1 after extra time in the play-off final. Didcot reached the play-offs after finishing fifth in the league and, in consecutive matches, beating the first- (Truro City), second- (Windsor and Eton) and third-placed (AFC Totton) teams, all away from home. The 2010–11 season saw long-term manager Stuart Peace leave the club in January, to be replaced by Adrian Williams; however, he could not save them from relegation. Manager Ady Williams then resigned in May 2011 to be replaced by Francis Vines, but he only stayed until September 2011, after a poor start to the season. He was replaced with Dave Mudge, who guided the club to the first round of the FA Trophy for the first time, but resigned at the start of the 2012–13 season for personal reasons to be replaced by Gary Elkins. Elkins was replaced by former Didcot FA Vase winners Ian Concannon and Jamie Heapy, who were appointed as joint managers in November 2013. The football club gained nationwide attention when it reached the FA Cup First Round Proper in season 2015–16 and was awarded a home tie with Exeter City, which was shown live on

BT Sport. At the end of the 2018-19 season, Didcot reappointed Jamie Heapy as their first team manager after Andy Ballard resigned. Player Profiles Jamie Heapy – Manager ‘Mr Didcot Town’ returned to the club this summer for his second stint as Manager. Jamie amassed an incredible 848 games as a player before stepping up as manager alongside Didcot legend Ian Concannon in 2014. As he player, won everything on offer at the club including The FA Vase in 2005 and promotion from Hellenic Premier Division in 2006. As a manager, he made more history as Didcot reached the first round of The FA Cup for the first time in 2005.

Strong in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet Joe has a very bright future ahead of him.

Started his career at Oxford United before spells at Banbury and Farnborough. A very talented box to box midfielder, Lewis is very comfortable on the ball as well as a good leader on the field. A pacey and direct striker George ended the season in excellent form and scored 2 absolutely superb free kicks against Hereford and Slimbridge amongst his goals. Caught the eye with a handful of substitute appearances for the first team in cup competition’s last season. Connor made over 50 appearances for the ‘Freds last season as Wantage won the double. A quick and direct player with an eye for goal Connor will be looking to make a big impact at Didcot. Jack Powell – Striker Jack returns to Didcot for his second spell at the club after three seasons away. Son of Oxford and Didcot Legend Paul Powell, Jack will mostly be remembered for his goal that sealed progression into The FA Cup 1st Round in 2015.

Denilson Silva – Striker Signed from Banbury United in October, Denilson is looking to make the step up to Southern League football following a successful season with Kidlington’s Development Team last season. Tom Stanley – Striker Signed from Wantage Town in September, Tom Stanley has played most of his football for local side Saxton Rovers where he has scored an incredible 124 goals in 96 games helping them win numerous trophies. Tom made the step up to Southern League football in the summer moving to Wantage Town and despite the ‘Freds’ struggles he has managed to score 2 goals this season in a handful of starts.

CORBY TOWN Year founded: 1948 Chairman: Steve Noble Club Website: www.corbytown.co.uk

WELCOME ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS CORBY TOWN WHO VISIT US FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR A LEAGUE FIXTURE SINCE BOXING DAY 2014.

At that time both of our Club were competing at Step Three in the Southern League Premier Division and Corby went on to finish Champions and gain promotion to the Conference North. However subsequent relegations now find them at Step Four where they are mounting a determined move to regaining Step Three status. With close to half of the season complete Corby lead the league table by two points and have lost only two of their16 completed league matches – both of them at home! Only last week they were beaten by Thame United having previously lost to Kempston Rovers but away from home it is a

different story. Unbeaten on their league travels they are hoping today to maintain a 100% league record at the Premier Plus Stadium for this is their third league visit having won here in both 2013/14 and 2014/15. However, since our club reformation in 1994, two Corby cup visits have been far less successful with out lads knocking out the Steelmen in the Southern League Cup in 2013/14 and the FA Trophy four years later. Going back even further there were two FA Cup matches at St Neots between our two sides. In 1970/71 Corby beat us 4-1 at Shortsands in a first Qualifying Round tie but six seasons later in the Second Qualifying Round we were the winners by three goals to nil. On a very wet and windy evening earlier this week a few brave souls witnessed our most recent match here in the

Hunts Senior Cup against our neighbours Eynesbury Rovers. After a thrilling 3-3 draw it was our visitors who progressed to the semi-final with a 4-1 penalty shoot-out victory courtesy of some inspired goalkeeping by a former Saint – Jamie Greygoose who saved our first two spot kicks.

Club History During the 1930s Corby was represented in the United Counties League by steelworks side Stewarts & Lloyds. But by the 1948 it was decided that the expanding town could support an independent football club and Corby Town was formed. Their nickname of the Steelmen derives from the link with Stewarts & Lloyds. Corby Town played their first game in August 1948 at Occupation Road, which

was to be their home until 1985. They won the United Counties League championship in both 1950–51 and 1951–52, and these successes prompted a step up the Midland Football League in 1952. The Steelmen spent five seasons in the Midland League before switching to the Southern League. They were promoted to the League’s top division in 1965 and making several applications for Football League membership without success. Corby was relegated from the Premier Division in 1968 and remained in various forms of Division One until league reorganization in 1982 saw them placed in the newlook Premier Division. The Steelmen were relegated again in 1990 – by which time they had moved to a new home at the multipurpose Rockingham Triangle sports complex and for the remainder of the 90s the club struggled to stay in the Southern League. Since 2002, however, the club’s fortunes have turned around, culminating in a return to the Southern League Premier Division in 2006. Following a

tough year back in the Premier Division the club was saved from relegation by Farnborough Town’s demise from the Conference South. 2007–08 looked really positive for The Steelmen, however the side assembled by Kevin Wilson vastly underachieved and following his sacking by the club and an influx of new players by new manager Graham Drury, The Steelmen avoided relegation with just one week of the season remaining. Following a number of new signings and complete team restructuring the Steelmen, promotion to the Conference North was achieved on 25 April 2009, at the Rockingham Triangle in front of a strong crowd of 1,990. The record gate at the Triangle was set in a pre-season game with Rangers with 2,300 supporters present. The record at Occupation Road was 10,239 against Peterborough United. In May 2012, manager Graham Drury left the club, after the board decided not to offer him a new contract. He was replaced by former

Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson a few weeks later. However after five straight defeats at the start of the 201213 season Ian Sampson resigned as manager and former QPR and Peterborough United defender Chris Plummer took charge. However, after four seasons in the Conference North, they were relegated on the final day of the season. Just two games into the 2013/14 season Chris Plummer resigned as manager of Corby Town, following defeats to Hemel Hempstead Town (6-0) and Burnham (3-0). Plummer’s assistant Mark Peters was placed in interim charge of the first team on August 21, 2013. Despite Peters steadying the ship with 3 wins and a draw from his 5 games in charge on the 9th September Chairman Kevin Ingram made the surprise announcement that a managerial duo, Andrew Wilson and Tommy Wright, would take charge of the Steelmen. They made a dream start to life at Steel Park with a 3-0 home win over Barwell in the FA Cup.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town St Neots took full advantage of their match in hand over Kempston Rovers as they clambered above them to the relative safety of 18th position with this impressive victory over visiting Coleshill Town. It was the first ever meeting of the two sides and the victory lifted St Neots out of the bottom two for the first time since 11th September. It was new Manager Barry Corr’s first league points and with three further consecutive home matches to follow, he will be looking for his side to capitalise on this confidence boost to move further away from the relegation zone. Ironically the St Neots man-of-the-match was goalkeeper Finlay Iron who made a string of inspired saves, but this should not detract from what was a competent and well-deserved victory. Coleshill arrived at St Neots in ninth place in the table and were looking to push on towards the play-off places but on the night, they were well beaten by a side gradually beginning to find an exciting rhythm in their play. Corr opted for just one change to his previous line-up, with Jonny Butler recalled and Prince Mutswunguma rested after his trial with Watford the previous day. Apart from Iron’s stellar display there were also excellent personal performances from Joe Neal whose two welltaken penalty goals opened his account at St Neots and Lewis Simper in midfield who was behind most of St Neots attacking moves. The visitors made the better start taking the game to St Neots and shading early possession, but they threatened little with St Neots speedy on the break. A low cross by Joe Sutton deflected off a defender requiring visiting keeper Paul Hathaway to make a smart save and Panny Boxer then had a net bound effort deflected for a corner. After 23 minutes

3

Coleshill Town

Tommy Boxer joined the home attack to have his searching cross cleared off the line by Shay Palmer but the ball was only returned to the St Neots defender and his second cross was forced in at the far post by fellow defender Thomas Dickens – his debut goal for St Neots. Less than two minutes later in their next attack, St Neots doubled their lead as Lewis Simper was pulled down in the penalty area and Joe Neal confidently smashed the ball into the net from the spot for a 2-0 lead. Lewis Rankin was proving the main threat to the St Neots defence, and from one of his inswinging corners, a Matthew Jackson header was well saved by Iron. Rankin then was played clear of the defence, but the keeper held his nerve to block his shot when a goal looked inevitable. At the other end a Joe Sutton corner was deflected wide and the first half ended with Joseph Smith being played clear wide on the right, but his finish was high and off target. Coleshill began the second half in defiant mode sending on an additional striker, but this left a gap in defence that was quickly exploited just four minutes after the restart when the speedy Neal was cruelly upended as he went around Jackson. The visiting player was booked, and Joe Neal got to his feet to confidently net his second penalty of the match. After 65 minutes with Coleshill trying hard to get back into the match their hearts were broken when Iron produced the save of the match to deny Jordan Francis who was clear and should have scored, but this did not really deter the visitors and Iron had to produce a back breaking save to turn a Rankin free kick over the bar. St Neots almost got a fourth goal when a 25 yards shot from Lewis Simper left the keeper motionless but rebounded from

0

the crossbar and then substitute Prince Mutswunguma saw his shot cleared off the line from an Aaron Smith corner. The high momentum of play never really ceased, and the one sour moment came seven minutes from time when visiting full back Shay Palmer was sent off after aiming a kick - off the ball at Joe Neal. Reduced to ten men for the final few minutes Coleshill never gave up and still managed to test Iron in the closing minutes, but this was a match in which the youngster was determined to keep a clean sheet.
