Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium
- Home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match.
Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of both St Ives
Town and Royston Town as we begin the new calendar year with two games against local opposition. We begin with a visit from our old adversaries, going way back to our United Counties League days, near neighbours St Ives Town. The Ives began the season , by their own admission, poorly but recently their form has picked up and they have moved up the table to 13 position (at the time the writing) after a recent win at Tamworth and most recently, a 0-0 draw with Royston town on Boxing Day. Our second opponents, Royston Town, have had an indifferent 2018 and have seen players come and go and will be looking to improve in the second half of the season if they are to finish higher than they did last season, their first in the Premier Division.
What about ourselves I hear you ask? Not the first half to the season we would have liked, apart from the FA Cup run of course, but we are working hard on and off the pitch to make sure we have the best chance of climbing out of the drop zone. Our last two games (not including our visit to Bedworth as these notes were penned prior to that game) have seen improved performances but we have lacked that bit of luck in front of goal. Fortunes in this great game can change on the flip of a coin so hopefully our luck will change in the coming weeks and our talented bunch of lads will get the rewards that their efforts deserve. Please keep on supporting the team as you have done all season, through the highs and lows, and hopefully we will come through this sticky spell and go on to pull away from the bottom three.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy, Healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year and we look forward to your continued support. .

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
Bedworth United This was a match that neither side could afford to lose. Bedworth had failed to record a victory in their first 20 league matches whilst St Neots are being sucked into the relegation scrap, and they travelled knowing that victory would hand them a rare league double. In the end it was decided by a single goal two minutes into added time scored by the oldest man on the field. 42 years old journeyman Iyseden Christie with several Football League clubs including Mansfield Town, Stevenage Borough and Coventry City on his CV plus around a dozen Southern League Clubs, came on as a second half substitute and was in the right place to sweep home a late goal through the tiring St Neots defence to earn Bedworth all three points. Neither side were at their best and it was a rather scrappy encounter that had a goalless draw written all over it until the last few added seconds. St Neots must now regroup and search for confidence as they kick off 2019 with three successive home fixtures. Still in the three-side relegation area they were almost caught by the side below them as Halesowen recorded a surprise 2-0 victory over visiting Banbury. With striker Nabil Shariff opting to return to Stratford where he had started the season, Manager Matt Clements installed Gary Wharton as his principle striker for his tenth start of the season, but he received little support but saw his best chance of glory ruined just four minutes before the winning goal, by the save of the match from home custodian Adam Harrison. Also reinstated in the side was Johnny Herd, who replaced Tom Wood who was on the bench. There was a pedestrian start to the match but after just ten minutes a hotly disputed free

kick awarded twenty yards from goal saw Alexander Troke bend his effort around the wall to bring an outstanding save from Finley Iron at the expense of a corner. Luke Rowe then volleyed over the bar following a second Bedworth corner, and St Neots first effort was a sixteenth minute lengthy shot from skipper Luke Knight that flew harmlessly wide. For a spell there was very little goalmouth action as neither side were able to put together any penetrative attacking play but just past the half hour a cynical tackle on Jack Daldy earned Barry Fitzharris the first caution of the match. Seven minutes before the break Wharton produced an impressive burst of speed to go clear of the home defence but Harrison advanced to the edge of his area to narrow the angle and parry the shot. Just one minute later a volley by Daldy just cleared the Bedworth crossbar and the sides went to the half time break locked at stalemate. St Neots looked the brighter side upon the resumption. A well-constructed three man move involving Jordan NorvilleWilliams and Daldy ended with Matt Miles seeing his net-bound shot deflected for a corner and then Harrison saved well from a Daldy header. After 69 minutes St Neots though they had broken through when Harrison dropped a cross from Norville-Williams, but an offside flag denied St Neots from capitalising. After this spell of pressure Bedworth came more into the game and in one attack both Fitzharris and Rowe had shots blocked as the visiting defence did their job. In the last fifteen minutes Bedworth looked the stronger side. Montal Gibson was left unmarked on the left and he advanced on goal, but Iron saved well with his legs and from the resultant
0
corner Fitzharris outjumped his marker but sent his headed effort wide of the far post. With substitutes on both sides went for the winning goal in a hectic last eight minutes. St Neots saw substitute Andrea Borg send a cross that was deflected, and the same player was skilfully set up by Wharton, but he shot wide. The important late Harrison save from Wharton was St Neots final chance but they were completely deflated when Christie snatched the late, late winner. Bedworth: Harrison, Dudley, Rowe, Parrot, Albrighton, Sharpe, Hancocks, Fitzharris, Gibson, Troke, Blackmore Subs: Christie (for Fitzharris 66 mins), Story (for Gibson 81 mins), Tonge, Whitmore and Abraham Cards: Fitzharris (Y – 32 mins), Albrighton (Y – 88 mins) Goals: Christie (90+2 mins) St Neots: Iron, Short, Herd, Knight, Hughes, Parr, Daldy, Miles, Wharton, Williams, Norville-Williams Subs: Borg (for NorvilleWilliams 73 mins), Wood (for Daldy 83 mins) and Gomes Cards: Parr (Y – 76 mins), Knight (Y – 88 mins) Goals: none Referee: Andrew Ellis (Solihull)
FOOTBALL is a game to be enjoyed but there are times when you really end up questioning what it’s all about. The £5m golden handshake being given by the Premier League clubs to outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore was one of those moments. It also brings home what the lower levels of football in this country is up against when cash of that amount is handed out at the drop of the hat. Yes, the Premier League does give money down to Non-League football and without it many clubs wouldn’t have been able to improve their facilities. But imagine how much more could be achieved and the good it could do for English football. Part of the problem is the disconnect between the top and the bottom. Non-League football couldn’t seem any further away from the riches enjoyed at the elite level. But, more crucially, the top clubs just don’t appear to give a hoot. And that’s what this payment to Scudamore says. Personally, no problem with players being well-paid. They are in an entertainment industry, pulling in the pound notes and they deserve to get their slice in what is a short career. I also don’t ever buy the argument that a player should simply hand over some of his wages just because a club has overspent and hasn’t paid their debts. That’s on them, not Alexis Sanchez, for example. It’s just tough to swallow a sizable hand-out when so many clubs are doing it the right way but still having to beg, borrow and steal to get by. When the news broke I had a rare rant in my NLP column because I feel it’s an insult to all those who put in the hard work throughout the season at our levels. It was from the heart. Let’s hope the Premier League show they have one too in 2019 and restore some lost faith. WREXHAM fans are understandably upset about manager Sam Ricketts leaving to take over at League One side Shrewsbury. The former Bolton and Hull City defender only took over in the summer but quickly showed he’s a boss with a bright future as he led the Welsh club to the top of the National League. But look at the bigger picture and it will hopefully be a boost to Non-League football if he can do well. Managers at this level rarely get a chance to step up. Opportunities are much more available to players. There are so many top bosses outside the Football League – it would be great if more get a shot higher up the ladder. DID you catch the amazing goal-line defending by Dulwich Hamlet last weekend? Wingate & Finchley couldn’t believe they hadn’t scored from a goalmouth scramble in their FA Trophy tie. Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards and some incredible desire from Ibrahim Kargbo kept the ball out as the Wingate peppered their goal – Kargbo finally throwing his head at the feet of an attacker to finally get the ball clear. The clip quickly racked up the viewing figures to well over two million. It shows the power of social media. Hopefully it might even lead to some new fans turning up at their local club over the coming weeks. It’s the sort of commitment to defending we can all appreciate. THE FESTIVE season is here and that can only mean one thing – football! Don’t forget The NLP will still be in your shops every Sunday and still for just £1.50. th The paper is fast-approaching its 1,000 issue. Drop us a line if you there’s anything you’d like to see us mark the occasion with when we hit the milestone! nlp@greenwayspublishing.co.uk

ST IVES TOWN FC Joined League: 1887 Manager: Ricky Marheineke Website: www.stivestownfc.co.uk St Ives Town FC was formed on Thursday 15th September 1887. About 40 people met at the Unicorn Hotel to “consider the desirability of forming a football club”. It was unanimously decided to form a club, to be called St Ives Town FC under Association Rules. The membership subscription decided upon was 3 Shillings & Sixpence including an entrance fee of 1 Shilling to be paid in advance. The kit was chosen to be black with a white star. The club rose to success by the turn of the century, collecting both Huntingdonshire Senior and Junior Cups in 1901. The Senior Cup was won again in 1912 but the club’s most successful era was the twenties. The Cambridgeshire League was won on three successive occasions from 1923 to 1925, there were Hunts Senior Cup successes in 1923 and 1926 with the Scott-Gatty Cup won in 1923 and 1924. Honours continued to be won in the thirties with the Senior Cup (1930), Scott-Gatty Cup (1932) and Peterborough League championship (1938) all won. In 1949 the Saints joined the far-flung Central Amateur League, However 12 months later the club decided to move into the much more local UCL 2nd Division. The team
struggled and two years later they rejoined the Peterborough League. The Scott-Gatty Cup was won in 1961 but league fortunes plummeted as the Saints slid down to the Peterborough League 3rd Division. They won that division in 1978 and then won speedy promotions in the following years. This culminated with a Division One title earning a Premier Division place in 1982. Three years later St Ives moved back into the UCL. Huntingdonshire Senior Cup successes were recorded in 1982, 1987 and 1988 while the revival of the Premier Cup saw the Saints reach the first final in 1989, losing 3-0 to Cambridge United. They also reached the Premier Cup final in 1997 and 1998, losing 5-4 to Potton and 2-1 to Biggleswade Town respectively. After finishing next to bottom in Division One in 2002, St Ives enjoyed improved fortunes under the management of Warren Everdell and Jez Hall. A memorable 2004-05 campaign saw the Saints finish third in Division One to win promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history. Modern History 2007-08 Produced another record breaking season with
the clubs highest pyramid finish, pushing for promotion but fell just short with a 5th place finish. The highlight of the season the run in the FA Vase which saw a 5th round tie at home to Needham Market produce a thrilling 3-3 draw which was witnessed by a then record 767 crowd. This was only beaten eight years later when it was almost doubled by the play-off final. Sadly the run ended in the replay a week later. 2008/09 was again a very successful season for the club, reaching the 5th round of the FA Vase for the second year running, coming 6th in the UCL Premier, and reaching the league cup semi final. The club reached all three county cup finals, but unlike 2006/07, the team picked up two winners trophies, in the Senior and Premier Cup, losing the final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup thus stopping another remarkable treble. 2009/10 saw the Saints once again getting to the fifth round of the FA Vase, before falling at the same hurdle for the third year running. On the domestic front, the Saints won the UCL League Cup for the first time in the clubs history beating Newport Pagnell Town 2-1 in the final. During the season Saints longstanding
Co Managers Warren Everdell and Jez Hall reached their 400 game milestones in charge at Westwood Road. 2010/11 the Saints once again progressed through to the Hunts Senior Cup final but were beaten by League champions; St Neots Town. Also for the second year running they appeared in the final of the League KO Cup but were beaten by the ‘up and coming’ Peterborough Northern Star. A final league position of 11th and one of the highlights in the FA Vase was beating last year’s finalists Wroxham FC away from home with a late goal from Dan Moyes. 2011/12 saw the Saints record their most successful season to date with a third place finish in the UCL Premier Division. After reaching the UCL KO Cup Final for the third successive year, the Saints lifted the trophy for the second time after an impressive 4-1 victory over promoted Kings Lynn Town. Once again the Hunts Senior Challenge Cup was proudly lifted to round off an excellent season with arguably one of the best squads ever to grace Westwood Road. Conor Washington finished the UCL and Club top goal scorer with 52 goals from 50 games. Once again the Saints saw their FA Vase dream shattered but this time after reaching the Quarter Final. 2012/13 saw the Saints First Team once again make history and after a long season the club was promoted to Step 4 of the non-league pyramid for
the first time club’s 125-year history. The Saints finished in second place behind Holbeach United but secured promotion as the highest placed Club with the necessary ground grading. The Saints also reached the League Cup final for the fourth consecutive season, but lost out to third place Spalding United in the final match of the season. This season also saw the sale of Conor Washington in October, he also managed to secure promotion - to the Football League with Newport County. Our Reserves were also crowned Cambridgeshire Division 2B champions finishing12 points clear of second place. During this season Warren Everdell & Jez Hall achieved their 500th game in charge together as CoManagers and Will Fordham and Dan Newman also reached the magnificent milestone of 500 appearances in a Saints shirt. 2013/14 saw the Saints perform well in the Southern League Division One Central against some strong opposition and ended up a healthy 13th in the league. The fans deserve recognition during this season as the stats showed St Ives was the fourth highest attended team in the league. Away from the league the club reached the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, just losing out in a replay to Concord Rangers of the Conference South. In the Trophy, the club also reached the second qualifying round. Finally, the season finished with a trip to St Neots where we ran out runners-up in the Hunts
Senior Cup final. At the end of the season, Warren Everdell and Jez Hall announced they were stepping down from their managerial positions after 12 years at the helm. Most of the club’s successes to date were during their tenure. 2014/15 saw the new management team of Ricky Marheineke, formerly of Huntingdon and Histon and Jack Cassidy, also from Histon take over the First Team squad. The duo re-shuffled the squad bringing in new faces. During this adjustment results slipped, however the second half of the season saw the Saints climb the table and finished a very respectable 9th position. It was decided during this season that the current U18’s team would be replaced by a Scholarship programme, led by assistant manager Jack Cassidy. A Ladies team would also be set up in the close season run by Darren Marjoram. A now fairly settled First Team and two brand new teams will mean a very exciting time for the club for the 2015/16 season. 2015/16 saw the team exceed all expectations by achieving promotion to step 3 of the football pyramid for the first time in their history. The feat was achieved in the most exciting fashion possible via the play offs after finishing a creditable fourth place. Having won their play-off semi-final on penalties at Egham they followed up with a final victory against the mighty Rushden & Diamonds in front of a bumper
crowd of over 1500 at the ProEdge Stadium. A late Danny Watson equalizer topped off by a winner from local lad Ben Seymour-Shove in extra time finished off a fantastic season in the best possible way. 2016/17 saw the team consolidate at step 3 with a creditable fifteenth place finish. This was topped off by a successful run in the League Challenge Cup where, an injury ravaged side, were unlucky to lose in the final to Hayes & Yeading United. The Ives were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by the now famous Westfields. But they enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Trophy getting to the third qualifying round before falling to a single goal at Kings Lynn Town. 2017/18 turned out to be a tough season for the Ives with the team eventually finishing twenty second and only being saved from the drop by the reorganization of the Leagues. Early exits from the FA Cup and Trophy only added to the team’s difficulties as on to many occasions they failed to turn promising displays into points. On a happier note the Ladies side of the Club continued their fantastic run of success with the first team winning the Cambridgeshire Womens Premier League to win themselves promotion into the Eastern Womens Regional League With Jack Cassidy now moved on Ricky has recruited an exciting new number two in ex Biggleswade Town assistant
Craig Adams. The pair have a tough task of recruiting the players to form a competitive outfit in the new and very strong looking Southern League Premier Division Central. Ten of last year’s squad still remain at the Club and some very promising looking players have been recruited around them. It may take a while for the team to gel and a mid-table finish is probably the upper limit of this seasons ambition.
St Ives Town FC Squad – 2018/19 Tim Trebes Position Goalkeeper Tim has worked with manager Ricky Marhineke for over six seasons across two different clubs. At the end of his first season with the Ives he received the supporter’s player of the season following a change in fortunes with the club’s defensive record post him signing. He played a vital role throughout the successful promotion campaign and kept that form going throughout the following season. Everyone at the Club will be delighted to see him back after a short break at the start of last season. Martin Conway Position Goalkeeper Experienced keeper Martin has joined the Ives in November 2018 from Kempston Rovers having been virtually an ever present for The Walnut Boys
over past two seasons. Having first joined Kempston in their UCL days in 2010 he has enjoyed much success with them appearing over 300 times in two stints with the Club. His other previous clubs include Aylestone Park, Leicester Constabulary, Hinkley United and Ampthill Town Tom Smith Position Goalkeeper Eighteen year old Tom is a product of the successful Ives scholarship programme. This highly promising young keeper is a very solid and confident all round keeper. He made his first team debut in 2016/17 season against Biggleswade Town in the third round of the Challenge Cup and also appeared in the Quarter Final win over Barton Rovers. He also made one appearance last season where he starred against promotion chasing Slough Town. Charlie De’ath Position Defender Charlie received all the accolades in the promotion season, a wonderful season for him personally and for the team. The central defender took a little while to settle at step 3. But he came back strong as that season wore on and finished with some outstanding performances something that he took on into last season. The former Northampton Town Scholar has developed well into a very talented central defender who is also capable of coming up with the odd vital goal.
Lloyd Groves Position Defender 28 year old Lloyd joined the Ives last season from high flying Thurlow Nunn League side Newmarket Town. The ball playing centre back adds a formidable presence to the Ives back line. He also has a happy knack of popping up with important goals when he ventures into the opposition box. EUFA B qualified coach Lloyd is a product of the West Ham United academy and has enjoyed successful spells locally with both Godmanchester Rovers and Soham Town Rangers. He is also the present head of the scholarship programme at the Club Jarvis Wilson Position Defender Eighteen year old Jarvis is a quick and powerful centre back that can also operate as a defensive midfielder. He has spent the last two years as a scholar at Northampton Town FC and joins the Ives as he starts a new chapter in his career in the non league game. Jamie Short Position Defender Eighteen year old Jamie is another exciting product of the Ives scholarship programme. He made his debut as at sixteen year old at Merthyr Town and immediately showed his is a very promising player who is an excellent reader of the game with a cool head. He continued his education in the
game with more accomplished performances last season. Vitally importantly for a defender he is very willing to go in where it hurts and put his body on the line when necessary. Daniel Moyes Position Defender Dan is an experienced player having clocked up 250 appearances for the Club. He can play numerous positions and will never let you down. He missed a lot of 2014/15 season with a serious knee injury. But returned fully fit for 2015/16 and played a vital role in the promotion campaign. For the past two seasons his appearances have been limited but he is always available when needed. Life and sole of the party off the pitch and always a man to give 100% when called upon on it. Joe Hood Position Defender Joe is a right back who completed a two year scholar at Peterborough United FC before moving to America for a year. He then spent last season at Mildenhall Town, impressing in their first season at step 4. He looks a very exciting prospect both defensively and roaming forward at every opportunity on the right side. Mark Coulson Position Defender Left back Mark spent a few months with the club the season before last. The vastly experienced former Peterborough United
professional has rejoined the Club in the summer from Biggleswade Town to once more bring valuable experience to the team and defensive line. Sam Cartwright Position Defender Exciting prospect Sam has been signed on loan until the end of the year from League One Peterborough United. He is a ball playing centre back or right back who is in the first year of a three year professional contract with the Posh and appeared in some of their pre-season fixtures. He has arrived at the Ives to increase his experience of men’s football and has settled in well playing a full part in the formidable looking Ives back line in the early season matches. Owen Wallis Position Defender/Midfield Local boy Owen worked his way up through the youth ranks during ten years at Norwich City serving a year as the skipper of their Under 23’s before being released in summer of 2018. He joined fellow Southern League Central side Tamworth and made his debut for the Lambs at Westwood Road on the opening day before being released from his contract to join his local side. He is an excellent reader of the game who is equally at home in the centre of defence or a defensive midfield role and will further strengthen the already solid looking Ives back line.
Ben Jackson
Ty Ward
Jordan Patrick
Position Defender
Position Midfield
Position Midfield/Winger
Former Northampton Town youngster Ben was released by the Cobblers at the end of 2014/15 season and joined Rugby Town where a serious injury put him out of the game for a while. A move to the north at the start of this season saw him sign for Northern League Division One West Widnes FC. But having now settled back in the Northampton area he is keen to rejuvenate his football career with the Ives.
Promising 20 year old midfielder Ty has joined the Ives in November from National Conference South outfit Hemel Hempstead Town. He spent last season as a regular with Dunstable Town at step three but following the Blues relegation the Milton Keynes based youngster joined AFC Rushden & Diamonds at the start of this campaign. His former Clubs also include Colney Heath and Chesham United.
Former Cambridge United professional Jordan who can operate as a wide player or full back has a wealth of knowledge at our level and will bring valuable experience both on and off the pitch. He is another player to follow Craig Adams from Biggleswade Town. His other former Clubs include Bury Town, Bedford Town, Needham Market and St Neots Town.
Robbie Parker Position Midfield Robbie joined the Ives in the summer from fellow Southern League club Biggleswade Town. The hard working and energetic midfield player had been an ever present figure during the last two seasons with Waders and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and understanding of step 3 football to the Club. Gordon Torkornoo Position Defender/Midfield 18 year old local boy Gordon earned himself a position in the squad with some impressive displays for the scholarship team last season. He made his first team debut in the latter stages of last season in a 1-0 away win at Frome Town. If he continues to develop he has a very real prospect of forcing his way into the match day squad either as a defender or defensive midfield player.
Tom McGowan Position Midfield The box to box midfielder originally with Northampton Town as a Scholar, joined Corby Town in 2011 and enjoyed a three year spell with the Steel Men before leaving for Brackley Town in the summer of 2014. That stay proved short lived however as he moved to Stamford in September of that year and went on to complete the season with The Daniels, scoring twice in their dramatic 3-2 win over Witton Albion on the final day of last season to secure the clubs’ Step 3 status. Tom was one of Ricky Marheineke’s first signings for the 2016-17 campaign and his battling qualities quickly made him a fans favourite at the ProEdge. He missed a large part of last season to concentrate on building his business but returns with batteries recharged and raring to go.
Ben Seymour-Shove Position Winger Ben returns to the Club having left in the latter stages of last season to bolster Cambridge City’s promotion push. He is now entering his fourth season with the club. having previously worked with the manager at Huntingdon Town following his Scholarship with Peterborough United. Local boy Ben will always be remembered for scoring the winning goal in the play-off final against AFC Rushden and Diamonds. He continues to have a happy knack of coming up with vital goals just when they are needed. Ollie Snaith Position Midfield/Striker Ollie is an energetic attacking midfielder and a product of Newmarket Town’s youth setup. He made his debut for the Jockeys at the age of 16, and went on to make over a century of first team appearances. He was made their player of the year in 2015/16 and was
subsequently snapped up by Needham Market in 2016. He went on from there to join Cambridge City in January 2017 and made the switch to Ives at Christmas last season going on to grab five goals in 23 appearances Munashe Sundire Position Midfield/Striker 21 year old prospect Munashe has joined the Ives from AFC Kempston Rovers after impressing in pre-season with his direct running style, ability to beat a man and pick a pass. His previous clubs include fellow Southern League Premier Division sides Chesham United and Kettering Town. He is a player that can always make things happen and his never say die attitude will very quickly make him a fans favourite at Westwood Road. Dylan Wilson Position Striker 18 year old Dylan spent last season with Rushden and Higham United in the United Counties League where he hit over 35 goals in less than 40 games in his first season of men’s football. It did not take him long to find the net in pre-season with the Ives as he hit goals in both of the first two pre-season fixtures against Soham Town Rangers and Peterborough Sports in 45 minute appearances before picking up an injury in the third game. The youngster has a bright future ahead of him and both manager Ricky Marheineke and assistant manager Bully Adams are delighted to have him on board
at Westwood Road.
Jake Newman
George Bailey
Position Striker
Position Striker
Jake has joined the Ives in November 2018 from Southern League Division One Central Peterborough Sports where he has scored five goals in twelve appearances this season. The proven goal scorer at steps three and four has also consistently found the net with his previous sides including 34 goals in 51 appearances for Kempston Rovers and 27 goals in 57 appearances spread over two spells with AFC Rushden & Diamonds. His other previous clubs include AFC Stamford, Spalding United, Wellingborough Town, Oadby Town and Kettering Town.
This exciting young attacker can operate as a centre forward or in an advanced midfield position. Twenty year old George spent last season at Biggleswade Town FC, scoring a hat trick on his debut against Farnborough in October. He then went on to show his consistency as he averaged just under one goal in every two games for the remainder of the season with the Waders. Danny Kelly Position Striker After spells with the youth teams at Cambridge United, Peterborough United & Histon, Danny joined Norwich City in 2007. Successful performances in the youth and reserve teams saw him rewarded with a one-year professional contract in 2009. However, he never played for the first team and left to join League Two side Barnet in the summer of 2010 making his debut against Chesterfield. Danny is also a former youth international captain of the Republic of Ireland and has most recently appeared for Cambridge City since 2014, he joined the Ives two seasons ago to strengthen the attack. His selfless running and ability to hold up the ball have quickly made him a vital cog in the manager’s plans to continue to take the Club forward.
Ben Baker Position Striker Ben is no stranger to the Ives having enjoyed a very successful loan spell with them from Kettering Town last season. He departed from the Poppies at the end of 2017-18 season and joined Banbury United but things did not quite work out for him with the Puritans and the Ives supporters will be delighted to welcome back his pace and direct running style
OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
ROYSTON TOWN FC Joined League: 1875 Manager: Steve Castle Website: www.roystontownfc.co.uk So when did it all begin? After some intensive research the evidence is that the club came into existence in 1875 making Royston the third oldest Club in Hertfordshire after Hitchin and Bishop Stortford. The Club’s very first honour came in 1911/12 when they won the Creake Charity Shield beating Wisbech 1-0 in extra time. The Club’s first major honour in more recent times came in the guise of promotion to the Herts County Premier League in 1969/70 and they went on to be champions in 1972/73 and 1976/77. In 1978 we rejoined the South Midlands League and won the Division One title at the first time of asking. Success continued with a final appearance in the Herts Charity Shield for the first time in 1979 and runners up spot in the South Midlands League Premier Division in 1980. The Herts Charity Shield was won in 1981/82 and two years later the Club joined the Isthmian League Division Two North where we remained for 10 seasons before returning to the South Midlands League in 1994. After a period in the doldrums which culminated in relegation from the South Midlands League Premier Division at the
end of 2006/07, Paul Attfield was appointed manager with ex Spurs favourite Tony Galvin returning to Garden Walk as 1st Team Coach in November 2007. Paul immediately set about building a new 1st Team squad and a run of 17 games undefeated saw the Club move from bottom of the table to finish in 5th place in the League. The foundations had been laid for the 2008/09 season and the first team took the South Midlands Division One League title with one of the best set of stats for any Step 6 Club in the country W33, D4, L3, GF138, GA30, GD+108, PTS 103. The 2011/2012 season will be seen as a watershed in our history with the winning of the South Midlands Premier Division title and promotion to Step 4 in the shape of the EvoStik Southern League Division One Central. In our first season back at Step 4 after an absence of 19 years it was hard to know what to expect and how we would perform. Most of our supporters felt a mid-table position would be an acceptable target for the season, but we quickly found ourselves exceeding all expectations as our
performances propelled us towards the top of the table. Four straight wins in the first four games set the tone and a run of nine wins with just one defeat between October and December saw us maintain a play-off position. In the very last game of the season a play-off was still a possibility and having gone 2-1 up away at AFC Hayes with just a few minutes of the game left it looked a near certainty. But it was not to be as Hayes scored an 87 minute equaliser and our play-off place was lost. In our second season at this level our steady progress to claim a place in the play off zone was given a severe jolt when, at the beginning of November, Paul Attfield announced his resignation as first team manager due to ill health. The search for his replacement began almost immediately and we were inundated with applications from some very well know and successful managers. After an exhaustive selection process the Board appointed Steve Castle at the end of November and on Boxing Day Steve officially took over securing a 0 – 0 draw against the League’s form team and eventual champions Dunstable Town. Our 2014/15 season opener was at home against one of the
promotion favourites Rugby Town but an impressive team display ensured their threat was stifled and we ran out winners 2 -1. That victory really did set things buzzing but we were quickly brought back down to earth when on the following Tuesday night Bedworth United were the visitors winning the game 3 – 1. As we all know consistency in performances provides the key to long term success and although the early stages of the season produced good results against the likes of Daventry Town and Beaconsfield these were punctuated by dismal performances against the likes of Aylesbury and Egham Town. From mid November to mid December we really lost our way with six defeats in seven games but our rollercoaster ride saw an incredible run of form over the Christmas period and into the New Year with five straight wins which helped us maintain a position in the play off places. On a miserable Tuesday evening in February we travelled to lowly AFC Hayes and after an abject performance we lost the game 2 – 0. This prompted our Chairman to tell Steve Castle that he had given up on this team making the play – offs and said that we should start preparing instead for next season. That message was conveyed to players and we witnessed a most remarkable transformation in our results with a 14 game unbeaten run during which we scored 29 goals and conceded just seven resulting in us achieving
the runners up spot to league champions Kettering Town and securing our place in the playoff semi finals where we met local rivals Barton Rovers. After an incident packed 90 minutes and extra time the game ended in a goalless draw but it was not to be our night and we lost the shoot out 4-5 and had to suffer the agony of all the emotions which go with being defeated in this way. We started the 2015/16 season strongly and between the end of December and the end of March we produced a rich vein of form with only one defeat in 14 games and this ensured we were sitting on top of the league with just 7 games to go and with the expectation that we could win promotion outright ran high throughout the whole club. However three games in succession proved our down fall when we could only draw 0 – 0 with Bedford and lost to Egham away 3- 1 and Godalming at home 1- 0 and once again we ended up in the play offs against AFC Rushden but we failed to turn up and went out tamely to our opponents 2 - 1. Having finished runners up for two years in succession Steve Castle was determined to make it third time lucky and began to recruit some experienced new blood in the shape of John Frendo and Adam Murray whilst at the same time giving youngsters Gus Scott Morris and Josh C extended runs in the first team. However the season didn’t start well and after four games
we’d only mustered five points whilst promotion rivals Farnborough just couldn’t stop winning. Although results did improve, defeat in the FA Cup to Heybridge Swifts 4 – 1 and a thrashing by Barton Rovers at home 6 – 3 at the end of September didn’t do a great of good for our confidence. Things took a dramatic turn thereafter with 12 successive league wins which ended with defeat 2-1 at Kidlington in early January 2017, interspersed by a magnificent run in the FA Trophy including victory against Step 2 outfit Hampton and Richmond Borough before in the replay against Dulwich Hamlet we eventually went down 1 -0. With cup football out of the way the team put together an incredible run of 16 league games undefeated , including a 5 – 0 thrashing of closest rivals Farnborough which saw us maintain the top spot until the end of the season by a margin of 12 points and the highest number of goals scored, 120, across all three Evostik Leagues. Promotion to the Southern Premier League means that the Club will be playing at its highest level in its 142 year history! The Club’s first of objective as it planned for life at Step 3 was as simple as ‘Let’s make sure we can stay in this League!’ and Steve Castle and Chris Watters immediately set about recruiting players to strengthen the squad. These included James Potton, Sam
Corcoran, Scott Thomas and Lee Chappell, all who had experience of playing at Step 3 and higher. The signing of Adam Marriott a proven goal scorer who had played for Lincoln City, Stevenage and Cambridge United was without a doubt a real coup and he was to play a key role in the progress made by the Club by becoming our leading marksman with 31 goals.
an ill disciplined performance saw us loose to Weymouth 3 – 0 followed immediately by a 1 – 0 away defeat to lowly placed Kings Langley. Although we managed to maintain our hopes of a play off place these were finally put to bed with two successive defeats against the eventually play-off winners Slough Town and we had to be satisfied with a seventh place finish.
There was further good news for the Club just before the season started when we heard that former Royston goalkeeper Will Norris who had gone to Cambridge United had been sold to Wolves with our ‘sell on’ clause with United still in place. Will played as number two to John Ruddy for most of the season and was the only goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in normal time against a full strength Manchester City team in the League Cup.
Our results in cup competitions were mixed. In the FA Cup we played Braintree Town away and were unlucky not to win the game outright after a brilliant performance saw us draw 2 – 2 and then loose the replay 2- l. A good run in the FA Trophy with wins against Enfield Town and Leatherhead came to an end against Eastbourne when having managed to draw at their place we lost the replay on penalties. We managed to get to the final of the Herts Senior Cup were we played Boreham Wood from Step 2 and in spite of a brave performance we never really had the power to compete and lost 2 – 1
When the season kicked off with our home game against Stratford Town we immediately realised how tough playing at this level was going to be as they used all their experience to chisel out a 2-1 win against us. As the season progressed results proved inconsistent with good wins against the likes of Kings Lynn and Farnborough interspersed with defeats to Hereford,Merthyr Town, Hitchin and St Neots. An undefeated run during October and another during December and into the New Year not only saw us consolidate our League position but put us in striking distance of the play off spots. Our chances for securing that spot were severly dented after
Given were we had started from, we definitely exceeded our own and many other peoples’ expectations and this has provided us with the building blocks to face this season in the newly constituted Southern Premier Central League. A comprehensive history of the Club can be found in The History of Royston Town FC 1875 - 2012 first published in 2013. The book was written by the Club’s President, Alan Barlow after over five years of
painstaking research and can be purchase via the Club on by visiting www.avbarlow.com.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds 2 St Neots Town 0 A Tom Lorraine brace for AFC Rushden & Diamonds proved to be the difference between the sides at Hayden Road on Boxing Day, with Saints playing more than half the match with only 10 men after Tom Wood was harshly dismissed before the break. Whilst it was always going to be an uphill battle for St Neots after the sending off, coming as it did moments after they had fallen behind, it was still disappointing that they failed to force one save from home keeper Heath throughout the ninety minutes. For the first twenty minutes the teams were evenly matched with very little goalmouth action. Saints best goal bound effort came in the opening minute from Norville-Williams whose twenty five yard effort whistled over the bar, whilst Diamond had the best chance for the hosts but his header was well wide. In what proved to be Saints best move of the match, Parr combined with Miles down the right in the twentieth minute and drove in a great cross that was met by Shariff but his header just cleared the bar. Diamond then had another chance for the hosts as the game started to open up and should have done better with a free header from a Reynolds cross but he directed his effort straight in to the arms of Iron, whilst a free kick by Hicks sailed over.
It was a thirteen minute spell just before the break that proved to be pivotal in determining the outcome of the match. Firstly two late challenges from Farrell saw the home midfielder booked in the twentieth eighth minute, and just six minutes later an even later challenge on Wood resulted in a free kick to Saints but surprisingly no further action was taken against the home player. Williams put the resulting free kick just over the bar. On Forty minutes the hosts took the lead when a corner from the left was met by Hopkins and although his header was cleared off the line, LORRAINE was on hand to tap home from close range. Less than a minute later Saints were down to ten men when Wood was shown a straight red card for what the Referee adjudged to be a dangerous tackle even though he won the ball in a fifty -fifty challenge.
from close range yet again after Diamond met a Hicks cross and his blocked shot fell at the feet of the striker. The home team had the ball in the net again four minutes later was Brown was adjudged to have pushed the Saints defender as he met a Rogers cross. The final fifteen minutes was non -eventful, broken up by no less than five substitutions as Rushden & Diamonds seemed to settle for their two goal advantage and Saints, despite never giving up, lacked any creativity to open up the home defence.
Despite their numerical advantage the home side failed to test Iron in the Saints goal in the early stages of the second half, although former Saints Declan Rogers was only denied by the woodwork when his twenty yard free kick looked goal bound. It was the sixty ninth minute when Rushden & Diamonds doubled their advantage and effectively ended any hope that Saints might force an unlikely equaliser, and it was Tom LORRAINE that struck

St Neots Town After their sixth home defeat in ten starts this season, St Neots go into 2019 now desperate for a change in their fortunes. Manager Matt Clements claims that his squad is now not far from his hopes, and the addition of two more loan players – one in attack and the other in defence – seemed to achieve his initial objective. However, for new players to gel within the team on their first outing is a tall order regardless of their individual ability and now St Neots must improve swiftly if they are not doomed to spending the next four months locked in a relegation dog fight. The main problem is statistically obvious – a return of just seven goals in ten home outings speaks for itself – and although the side creates openings the finishing is not good enough. The two latest squad additions were loan signings from Northampton Town and both were thrown in at the deep end, one of them striker Jack Daldy who looked promising but lacked service. The other, Ryan Hughes a tall defender, slotted comfortably into a defensive back three as Clements shuffled his team tactics and he also recalled Tom Wood and Matt Miles in midfield with Devante Stanley, Jordan NorvilleWilliams, Andrea Borg and Lee Watkins making way. The end result was an improvement on the team performance at Barwell in midweek, but the truth is that results are now more important than performances. The match only went ahead after a very late pitch inspection with the heavy overnight rain making the centre of the pitch rather boggy.
St Neots began confidently enough and in their first attack an effort by skipper Luke Knight was deflected for a corner. Russell Short then headed narrowly over from a second corner and Nabil Shariff set up Tom Wood for a 20 yards effort that was only inches over the bar with the visiting

keeper beaten. Stratford did get the ball in the St Neots net but only after an offside whistle, and little was seen of the visiting attack until the half hour when Finley Iron was first called into serious action to save a Shane Benjamin header from a William Grocott free kick. Shariff attempted an acrobatic volley that flew over the bar and then Stratford set up the best chance of the first half when Grocott and Wilson Carvalho combined to set up Benjamin, but he shot wide when he should have at least tested the home keeper. St Neots won several corner from one of which Russell Short was cautioned for a late challenge on the keeper and the half ended with Benjamin again shooting wide after good work by former St Neots player, Lewis Wilson.
Stratford substitute Shawn Richards in space and he skilfully rounded the advancing Iron to double the visitors’ lead. That wrapped up the result despite St Neots’ late surge that included a goal from Taylor Parr that was too little too late to have any effect on the outcome. St Neots are deep in trouble in the relegation zone, but Stratford now up to eighth are only goal difference away from a play-off place.
After Dylan Williams had sprinted down the left immediately after the resumption to set up Jack Daldy for a shot comfortable saved by Natja Sarkic the game boiled over in an off-the-ball incident that produced three bookings and that seemed to ruin what rhythm there was in the contest. For around fifteen minutes there was little progress for either side, but two free kicks conceded in as many minutes on the edge of the St Neots area proved significant. The first was cleared by Ryan Hughes and the second by Russell Short but on this occasion the ball fell to Wilson Carvalho who was unmarked on the edge of the area and he produced a sublime curling shot into the roof of the net giving Finley Iron no chance. St Neots tried to respond with Johnny Herd bringing two excellent saves from Sarkic – one from a dipping cross and the second from a well hit shot from 18 yards. Williams also saw the keeper save comfortably and it became a keen contest with the visiting defence seeming happy to hang on to their narrow advantage. Then out of nothing, a hopeful through pass found
