Greeny’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.

Today we extend a warm welcome to our newest of neighbours, Biggleswade FC and we hope their players, officials and supporters enjoy their first ever visit To St Neots Town before travelling safely back over the County border later this tea time. A defeat on our last outing against promotion favourites and current league

leader Corby Town but we were by no means disgraced even though the scoreline would suggest an easy win for the Ravens. There were spells in the game where we looked more than a match for Corby, getting the ball down and playing through the thirds rather than trying a direct route against their giant centre halves and we were finally rewarded with a deserved goal when SAM GOMARSALL earned and converted a penalty in the 88th minute to show some reward for the lads efforts. Our best wishes go to young Jacob Joseph who suffered a hamstring injury in this game and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Last Saturday saw us edge a tight affair when we entertained Didcot Town and this

game was settled by a solitary strike from skipper TOM BOXER on the stroke of half time. Not the prettiest of games but we were dogged and resolute and I’m not being unkind if I say maybe we would have crumbled as the game went on a month or so back so in my opinion, we are making good progress.

Back to today’s game then and as always, get behind the

lads from the first whistle. Your support can and does make a difference on the pitch.

BE LOUD, BE PROUD, BE A SAINT

On behalf of everyone involved at St Neots Town FC, I would like to welcome all involved from Biggleswade to our Premier Plus Stadium this afternoon for our latest Betvictor Southern League match. I write these notes on the back of a win against Didcot Town and a loss against Corby Town. I was pleased with the result against Didcot although I felt we didn’t actually put in a performance to the levels we are capable of, but we were still worthy of winning the three points. The players showed real character and game intelligence to win despite not being at their best. The game I was really excited about was the Corby Town game. They are, of course, top of the league and I was keen to see what they would look like and how we would fair against them. In truth, they were the better side overall and deserved their three points. They’re the first team in my time here who I felt were better than us. They were big, strong, energetic and played some really good football at times too. I believe they have a big budget for the level and have some very experienced players, the polar opposite to ourselves, we don’t have a big budget and we have a young team but as I’ve said already, I’m convinced that with hard work on the training ground we can get to that level for sure. That’s what our aim must be, to be competing at the top end of the division. I keep saying it, but I’m still very excited for our future and really look forward to every single game. Thank you for your support in my brief time so far at the club and please get behind the boys again today.

Late postponements are sometimes going to happen in Non-League football. A sudden downpour, drop in temperature or even a fast-setting fog. But Farsley Celtic’s FA Trophy replay at Barnet last Tuesday night st (January 21 ) was called off just minutes before kick-off because of a frozen pitch. It meant a 380-mile round trip for the part-time visitors was completely wasted. You can imagine how annoyed they would have been. They had to make the same trip this Tuesday night! We accept that there will be times when games have to be postponed but so soon before kick-off in these circumstances is a bitter pill to swallow. Farsley say they are going to push for answers to make sure it’s not repeated and incidents like this will often spark the debate on Trophy replays. But that doesn’t help the fans who made the long trek and will do so again. Part-time players will have to take the time off work all over again, but it’s the fans, who will also be left out of pocket from the first trip. At least the National League Bees offered free admission and a couple of Barnet fans were also sure to buy them a drink after the game had been called off. Football gives the impression that it forgets its fans at times. Escalating prices are forcing Premier League followers out of stadiums and into Non-League grounds. They should be embraced and welcomed. But stories like this don’t show Non-League off in its best light. Barnet have had issues with their pitch this season and we can only hope Tuesday’s game goes ahead as scheduled. We want to be talking about great moments in the FA Trophy, like Halesowen’s great run that saw them knock out National League Maidenhead on the same evening. We must do better all round! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------All our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jordan Sinnott, who passed away aged 25 following an assault last Friday night. The outpouring of emotion from his current club Matlock Town show just how much he meant to them. Former club Alfreton Town released a moving message and former team-mates have paid their tributes to the man they call ‘Sinbad’. Jordan’s dad Lee is well-known to so many in football after a successful playing and management career. He has helped to shape many careers and no doubt the football family will now wrap their arms around him and his family at this awful time.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

BIGGLESWADE FC Year founded: 2016 Chairman: Jeremy Reynolds

WELCOME ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS BIGGLESWADE FC WHO VISIT US FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR INAUGURAL SEASON AT STEP FOUR. The rise of Biggleswade FC to Step Four has been meteoric because just four seasons ago the club (along with several existing players) were a very successful U18 side plying their trade in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League. One of three clubs based in Biggleswade, our visitors are competing for local talent with Biggleswade Town (Step Three) who are their present landlords, and Biggleswade United (Step Five). Currently 13th in the league table they have won as many games as they have lost so far, and after years of non-stop success they will be delighted to be competing at this level – the highest ever in their embryonic history. Earlier this season our first meeting at Biggleswade resulted in a very competitive 0-0 draw and since then they have grown in confidence and are enjoying their first experience of Southern League football. The last meeting of our two clubs on this ground was on 17th September 2015 and was the fourth match of the season in the Thurlow Nunn U18 league. We were unbeaten and top of

Club Website: www.biggleswadefc.co.uk

the division – until that night – for our lads were beaten 9-0 – their heaviest ever defeat in the Youth League. Of course, Biggleswade went on to win the division. They have had some notable success away from home this season – winning at Daventry, Kempston and Wantage and drawing at Bedford, Kidlington and Yaxley. In midweek after these notes were written Biggleswade played an outstanding home game with Bedworth United. Club History Biggleswade FC was formed in May 2016 from the very successful Biggleswade Town Under 18s side that competed in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League. In their very first season in senior football (2016/17), Biggleswade FC’s squad of young, talented players won the SSMFL Division One title. They finished with 99 points, six clear of Harpenden Town in second place and were duly promoted to the Premier Division - totally vindicating the decision to start off at Step 6 football. The 2017/18 season, the Club’s second full season in senior football, will probably be remembered for our exploits in the FA Vase.

Victories over Northampton Sileby Rangers (5-3), Basildon United (2-0), Crawley Green (2-0) and eventual SSML Premier Division champions Welwyn Garden City (2-1 after extra time) saw FC reach the last 32. In 2018/19, the club really announced itself on the local and national stage. For the second time in three seasons, FC were league champions - this time clinching the SSMFL’s Premier Division title by six points after a four-way tussle with Tring Athletic, Hadley and Biggleswade United for much of the season. They made it a league and cup treble lifting the Premier Division Cup with a 2-0 win over Baldock Town in front of over 300 spectators and in excess of 200 turned out to see FC lift the North Beds Charity Cup for the first time with a 5-1 demolition of Ampthill Town at Bedford FC. Promoted to the Southern League (Division One Central) to play at Step Four for the first time after only three seasons at senior level is an incredible achievement – akin to a fairy story! Player Profiles Tyler Josephs (Goalkeeper) Following the departure of Ross Tompkins, FC’s

management team identified Tyler as their number one target to replace him. The young keeper arrived this summer from neighbours Potton United where he made 80+ appearances over the past two seasons. Luke Oswick (Defender) 20-year-old Luke is a promising local youngster who fits the profile of what we are trying to do here at Biggleswade FC. Previously with Royston Town, he is good at going forward and has become a regular feature at left-back after starting the season in the reserves. Michael Simpson (Defender) “Simo” arrived from Stotfold in July 2018. A player that was on Dave Northfield’s wanted list for a while. Started last season in the Reserves, but he grew in confidence and quickly became a solid and dependable member of the 1st Team’s back line. Adam Hunt (Defender) An exciting attacking right back, “Hunty” captained FC to the SSML Division One title in the club’s debut season in 2016/17. His performances got him a move to Welwyn Garden City for 2018/19 and despite some good performances for The Citizens, Adam decided to “come home” and became the first FC player to reach 100 appearances. Nathan George (Defender) Played in the club’s first-ever

game in 2016. An impressive goalscoring record reaching double-figures in two out of three campaigns, mainly down to him being the club’s regular penalty-taker. An influx of new centre-halves saw him lose his place in the side earlier in the 2018/19 season, but he returned with some big performances in the run to the Treble. Daniel Newton (Defender) Another of FC’s summer defensive recruits. Previously with Northwood, the young defender has already shown he is up for the battle despite only being 19. A good talker who has been a mainstay in the FC backline so far this term. Joe Gauge (Defender) A January 2020 arrival from Southern League neighbours Hitchin Town. Joe caught the eye of the FC management team at cross-town rivals Biggleswade United where he scooped three awards at the club’s End of Season Presentation in his first season of senior football. Michael Fisher (Defender/ Midfield) 24-year-old “Fish” was a long-term target of the FC management team and they finally got their man from Bedford FC this summer. A no-nonsense, throwback of a player who enjoys a physical battle. Started the season at centre-half, but has turned in some fine performances in the middle of the park of late.

Lawrie Marsh (Defender/ Midfield) University commitments limited his involvement before last season, but Lawrie clocked over 50 appearances for the club alone last term with some eye-catching displays – particularly from left back. He was also one of seven FC players to hit double-figures in the goalscoring charts. Last season’s Managers and Players Player of the Year. Pat McCafferty (Midfield) Pat spent all of his youth playing days with Luton Town, but was released as a 16-yearold. Their loss has certainly been FC’s gain though, making over 120 appearances for the club to date. Always in the right place to break up play, but equally as adept at driving from midfield with the ball at his feet. An all-action class act, who will be essential to FC’s future successes. Matt Richardson (Midfield) 20-year-old Matt already has Senior Football experience with Ampthill Town under his belt and has shown plenty of promise since arriving at the club. He has had to be patient, but some solid performances last season has seen him nail a regular starting berth in the FC midfield this term. Joe Bradbury (Midfield) An experienced midfield player who has formerly been with Eynesbury Rovers, Crawley Green and Bedford FC. He maybe one of the older

members of the squad, but he is undoubtedly one of the fittest. His opponents always know they’ve been in a game when they come up against his all-action and energetic style of play. Matt Reynolds (Midfield) Another former Luton Town academy player who was a key cog in Biggleswade Town’s successful under 18 side. University commitments have limited his involvement in the FC setup, but having now completed his studies he will be keen to stake his claim. An accomplished and hardworking midfielder who does the simple things well. Kye Andrews (Midfield) 26-year-old Kye is a late2019 addition to the squad from fellow Southern League neighbours Kempston Rovers. Made his FC debut as a late substitute in the defeat at Thame United. A hard-working midfielder with spells at Eynesbury Rovers and Bedford Town also on his footballing CV. Lee Northfield (Midfield/ Forward) “One of the originals” from the all-conquering Biggleswade Town under 18s side. Lee spent six years at Ipswich Town before moving on to Stevenage FC. Over 40 goals and 25 assists for FC to date and despite getting a bit of stick for being the manager’s son, he is certainly a creative cog in the free-scoring FC machine.

Tom Coles (Midfield/Forward) Club Captain A mid-season arrival from Eynesbury Rovers in 2017/18 where he had scored over 100 goals in just over six seasons, “Colesy” averages just over a goal every other game for FC. Following Adam Hunt’s departure, he took up the captain’s armband and excelled as one of the club’s star performers. Excellent in the air and a good finisher in and around the box. Tom Cookman (Forward) “Cookie” is a talismanic forward who leads from the front. Although his goal return has dwindled over the past three seasons, there is no doubting his importance and experience to this young squad. One of only three players to score over 50 goals for the club so far. He is a nightmare for defenders (and referees ;-p). Ryan Inskip (Forward) First FC player to reach 150 appearances for the club. “Skippy” was one of FC’s star performers in 2018/19 chipping in with 20 goals including a cup final brace against Baldock Town. His quick feet and close control make him equally adept at creating goals as he is at scoring them. Scott Joseph (Forward) Recent capture from neighbours Bedford Town. The 31-year-old forward has bags of experience with spells at AFC Rushden & Diamonds,

Bedford Town, St Ives Town and Barton Rovers to name a few. The strong and powerful front man has made an immediate impact scoring five goals including at hat-trick at Wantage Town. Joe Leslie (Forward) An exciting work experience addition from Stevenage FC. The third-year scholar has impressed with some eyecatching displays and some excellent goals so far. Joe will be looking to gain senior football experience whilst with the club as he continues to find his way in the game. Daniel Bond (Forward) “Bondy” arrived from neighbours Langford in November 2019 having scored 12 goals in 16 appearances in a short stint down the road at Forde Park. He also has Step 4 experience though having had spells goalscoring spells with both Hertford Town and Welwyn Garden City in recent seasons. Sean McMonagle (Forward) Sean is another player who had a spell in the youth ranks at Luton Town. University took him to the South Coast where he scored an impressive 13 goals in 18 appearances for Step 5 Wessex League outfit Horndean in the second half of last season. A hard-working forward and decent in the air.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town Back to back wins without conceding a goal, for more than a year, earned three valuable points to take St Neots within one point of visitors Didcot as their gradual climb up the table continues, and will have boosted confidence as the newly assembled line-up progresses. It was a hard fought but welldeserved victory with single goal from skipper Tom Boxer – his first for the club – enough to separate the sides. Didcot proved to be hard-working and resilient opponents with their two tall central defenders Luke Carnell and Joe Green snuffing out the most promising St Neots attacks, but St Neots had their own excellent defenders in the two Tom’s – Boxer and Dickens as well as dependable shot stopper Fin Iron in goal. St Neots still have some weak points to work on with too many promising openings falling due to a poor final ball, and once again they made a very slow start to the match, taking far too long to find their rhythm. However, the second half improvement was impressive, and the narrow one goal advantage always looked likely to deliver the victory. For the first time since September there were no changes to the starting line-up, and just one on the bench with Lee Watkins reinstated after suspension. The first 45 minutes were uninspiring and pallid with neither sides producing much to warm their followers on a cold afternoon. There was a general lack of intensity in the play with St Neots guilty of some careless passing when they were in possession. An early typical snapshot from distance by Lewis Simper sailed agonisingly the wrong side of a post but Didcot were

1

creating their own openings with Cameron McNeill heading tamely wide from a Humphries free kick and Jack Dark firing high over the bar after neat work by George Reid. Visiting keeper Leigh Bedwell did well to parry a rising shot from Panny Boxer and he then claimed an Aaron Smith free kick amidst a crowd of players. Jonny Butler needlessly picked up a caution pulling back an opponent and the first half looked to be a stalemate until the clock ticked over into the 45th minute. Then a cross from the right was only cleared as far as home skipper Tom Boxer and he hit a low shot through the crowded penalty area to put his side ahead and claim his first goal for the club.

side, replacing him with Prince Mutswunguma who was only caught inches offside as he went clear from a Simper through pass. Iron made a very significant save to deny Reid, who had been the pick of the visiting players, but play switched quickly to the other end where Simper brought the save of the match from Bedwell. Simper then limped off to be replaced by Lewis Foster and St Neots thought they should have had a late penalty when Mutswunguma was upended but the Referee waved play on.

Thankfully, the second half proved far more entertaining and competitive. It began with the substitution of Butler by former skipper Lee Watkins, who beefed up the midfield attacking options for the home side, and as a result St Neots began to manage the game in a more confident manner. Just past the hour, Joe Sutton after a quiet first half, cut inside past two defenders and saw his rising shot pass across the face of goal, and then Tom Boxer broke up a Didcot attack to forge forward to set up Simper whose shot was well saved by Bedwell. The keeper then had to be brave to leave his line to claim the ball at the feet of Watkins, but Didcot too had their moments with Finley Iron twice in action in the same attack, pushing away a Reid corner before saving a firm Luke Carnell header. Sixteen minutes from time St Neots Manager Barry Corr withdrew hardworking striker Joe Neal who had received next to no service from his
