Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium – The home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for this re-arranged Evostik League South Premier Division Central Match.

Tonight we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Leiston FC and we hope your stay with us this evening is a pleasant one before embarking on a safe trip home later tonight.

It was back to winning ways on Saturday with a very well deserved win over Royston Town with a

performance that contained all the characteristics which have become synonymous with St Neots Town FC over the years; the game being played at tempo, the ball being kept on the floor and using the full width of the pitch, added with ingredients containing a little bit of luck, which we have been lacking in recent weeks, bravery and passion gave us our first win since the 8th December, when we defeated Redditch United 3-1.

There have been a few changes in personnel since my last notes were penned after the sudden departure of Nabil Shariff back to Stratford Town, so may I take this, opportunity to welcome back to the Club striker James Hall, striker Mason Rhiney, Scott Sinclair, who had taken time out away from the game and most recently, midfielder Scott Pollock, who joins us on loan from Northampton Town.

We of course face tonight’s visitors again on Saturday over at their place and then next Tuesday, January 15th, we travel to Yaxley FC in the Hunts Senior Cup, so it would be great to see a good following travel to this game as we look to defend the trophy we won on May last season. Right then, back to tonight’s game. Get behind the boys as you did on Saturday as your part in proceedings is so important.

Til next time…… BE LOUD… BE PROUD… BE A SAINT

Greeny

From the Dugout… With

Good evening and hope you all had a good Christmas and healthy & happy new year.

Great to get a very positive performance & result on Saturday of which I was very

proud of the players for. It’s the hardest thing in life sometimes when your down and out to pick yourself up... it shows massive character to keep going and keep trying despite the knocks, comments, negativity and lack of self confidence... but to get up and eventually perform shows true character. I’m sure we’ve all experienced this in life and know how it feels.

It’s one win, one game there’s many more to come of which this group will lose some of... but they will perform and they will win more games and they will survive.

I wish you a happy and positive 2019... it’s your Club and I respect you all and as I have said you’ll be here longer than I will but till the end of the season it would be great to keep being positive and end the season on a high. Many thanks

COYS

Matt

So another festive season has flown by, once again serving up an absolute feast of Non-League football for us to gorge upon! As is annual tradition, football fans from up and down the country worked off their Christmas lunch by marching to Boxing Day games, while a week later, supporters braved hangovers from the previous night’s antics to back their teams on New Years’ Day. A look at the attendance statistics during these two days demonstrates what an important time of year the Christmas period is for football fans and clubs alike. For example, on Boxing Day well over 1,500 Scarborough fans crammed into the Flamingo Land Stadium to watch their side’s top of the table clash with South Shields, while a sold out crowd toasted Dulwich Hamlet’s winning return to Champion Hill. Records were also smashed on New Year’s Day with Altrincham recording their highest league attendance since 1970 when Stockport came to visit Moss Lane and well over 2,000 Kettering fans danced around in absolute ecstasy as Rhys Hoenes nodded home a stoppage time winner to give the Poppies an injury time victory over AFC Rushden & Diamonds. The money gained from these increased gate revenues is absolutely vital for clubs across the Non-League pyramid, especially as we are now into the time of the year when the fixture list of often decimated by the handy work of the British weather. These Christmas fixtures also provide a special time for fans, whether it involves being able to return to where you grew up to watch your boyhood team or briefly escaping the monotony of sharing small talk with distant relatives to enjoy some football on the terraces. Nevertheless, it was interesting to note that a few clubs opted to alter their festive schedule this year, with a number of Bostik league clubs opting to reduce their fixture congestion by taking up the league’s offer to not play on Boxing Day. Ultimately, this decision is perfectly understandable, even if it may have disappointed a few fans. While we all adore the festive football schedule, we must remember that it puts an immense strain on both players and volunteers at clubs, who often have to forgo the Christmas celebrations that we take for granted in order to ensure that matches are fulfilled. Whether you enjoyed the Christmas period on the terraces or with your feet up on the sofa we hope that is was an enjoyable one! Roll on 2019 and a fascinating second half to the season !

LEISTON FC Joined League: 1880 Manager: Andrew Crisp Website: www.leistonfc.com A special welcome this afternoon for the Manager, players, officials and supporters of LEISTON who make their first ever visit to the Town. However, our two clubs did meet in competition a little over eight years ago when we travelled to Leiston for a First Round Qualifying FA Cup match that was won by our hosts by three goals to two. It was an incident packed encounter with Leiston reduced to ten men before the break. St Neots led twice but the ten men came back to score a late winning goal to proceed in the competition (match report elsewhere in programme). Leiston have been part of the Bostik Isthmian League since winning their way up to Step Four via the championship of the Eastern Counties League in the 2010/11 season – one year before we joined the Southern League. Like us their impetus was maintained to achieve Step Three status just twelve months after their elevation. At the time these notes were penned, Leiston were twelfth in the table having won seven of their eighteen completed matches and drawn four more. Their away record shows victories at St Ives, Royston and Kettering (the first defeat of the season for the league leaders) so they do appear to travel well this season. Last season they finished fifth in the Isthmian Premier Division to feature in the play-offs where they lost by a goal to nil to league runners-

up Dulwich Hamlet. In the past twenty years their trophy cabinet has been full, as in quick succession they lifted the Eastern Counties League championship, the Ryman League Division One North title and the East Anglian Cup so success has been a regular feature of their history. Now in company with two other East Anglian sides who have transferred from the Isthmian Premier League across the pyramid they find themselves travelling westwards for their league programme as opposed to south.

Club History Leiston Town Football Club was first affiliated with the Suffolk County FA in 1880 and at the time was undoubtedly closely associated with the Richard Garrett Engineering Works. In the early days, games were played on the old Recreation Ground adjacent to Gas Hill (now known as Park Hill) and players would change at either the White Horse Hotel or at the Works Hall. In the early 1920’s Richard Garrett’s bought the ground off Victory Road renaming it the Leiston Works Athletic Association and this has been the home for over 90 years although the ground name was changed in the 1980’s to LTAA (Leiston Town Athletics Association). In the early years the club were members of the North Suffolk

League and then Ipswich and District League, winning the latter League three times in 1900, 1901 & 1902. They then had two spells in the East Anglian League sandwiched between spells in the Ipswich & District League. After the Great War the club was reformed as Leiston Works Athletic and during the 1920’s was part of three Leagues – Essex and Suffolk Border League, Ipswich & District League and North Suffolk League. In 1934 the club returned to be called Leiston Town spending fourteen years in the Ipswich & District League before returning to the North Suffolk League for a third time but yet again returning to the Ipswich & District League five years later in 1953 where they stayed for the next 48 years. During the Second World War the King’s Regiment, which included most of the players of Liverpool FC, were stationed at Leiston and they played some of their matches at the LWAA ground. More recently, and in their first Jewson League season, Leiston lifted the Division One trophy in 2002. The club also lifted the prestigious East Anglian Cup after a penalty shoot-out over higher ranked Brentwood Town in May 2008 and then the club achieved back to back titles winning the Ridgeons Premier Division in 2011 and the Ryman League Division One North a year later in 2012. Efforts on and off the field in the past

few seasons has also seen the club win prestigious awards for Respect and Fair Play from the Ryman League and the club is extremely proud to collect such achievements. After ten seasons in the Eastern Counties League the club gained promotion to the Ryman League as champions of the Ridgeons League. The inaugural Ryman League season provided unexpected success and at the first attempt secured the Division One North title with some fantastic performances including a 26 games unbeaten run. Now in its sixth season at Step Three, the club achieved its highest ever finish last season (5th) and qualified for the play offs for the very first time, beaten by a single goal at Dulwich Hamlet in the Semi Finals. A fantastic effort by all but the Blues now say good bye to the Isthmian League as a new chapter begins in the newly formed Southern League Premier Division Central for season 2018/2019. Over the years, Leiston have been blessed with many able and willing Chairmen, Secretaries and committee members and the club has prides itself on its family attitudes. The club has also been very fortunate over the years to have players of note in their ranks and includes many links with professional clubs including Ian Gillespie, Ted Phillips, Jackie Warne, Stuart Boardley, Byron Lawrence and Jason Dozzell to name but a few. The club continues to improve its facilities in line with FA grading requirements and now has some of the best Non- League facilities in Suffolk and the club is forever looking to improve. The efforts

of Chairman Andy Crisp and Vice Chairman Peter Mayhew have been the main driving factors behind the changes and the meteoric rise of the club to step three of the national Pyramid. Manager Glenn Driver, who has had two fantastic seasons in the first team hot seat, continues to push the club forward especially with the development of Youth at Victory Road.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots Town St Neots was hoping for a new start to the New Year, but their in-form neighbours had used up all their goodwill and left with the three points to condemn their hosts to a fifth consecutive league defeat over the festive period, now seemingly doomed to a relegation battle in 2019. Manager Matt Clements had brought in James Hall to lead his attack after a two years absence, following the defection of striker Nabil Shariff, but he received precious little service and was closely shadowed by the solid St Ives defence. Hall has an excellent strike rate in St Neots colours with fifteen goals in 26 appearances but despite his efforts on the day he had just one significant shot on target. With only one defeat in their last nine matches St Ives have climbed to half way in the table and they look compact and well-organised. However it is perhaps significant that they fielded just three of the players in their starting line-up that had featured in the last meeting of the two sides whilst St Neots numbered six survivors. With Johnny Herd unwell Clements made two team changes with Hall joined by Tom Wood returning in midfield and Matt Miles starting on the bench. An enthusiastic local crowd saw a competitive start to the match, but it was St Neots who still had one seasonal gift to bestow as they preswented their visitors with a goal after twelve minutes. Forced on to his left foot to clear a back pass, Finley Iron miskicked directly to the unmarked Robert Parker and although his effort was blocked by a defender, the ball fell at the feet of Jake Newman who guided it past the stranded Iron. The game was then held up following a clash of heads but both players happily continued after treatment and St Ives began to dictate play with Newman close to adding a second goal. He sped between the last two defenders but was brought down in full flight from

0

St Ives Town

behind by Ryan Hughes on the edge of the area. The St Neots played looked fortunate only to be shown a yellow card, but the free kick was wasted. The home side did produce a brighter period around the half hour when a Russell Short cross was plucked off the head of James Hall by Martin Conway and the keeper then save an important save to deny Dylan Williams. Ben SeymourShove fired wide after neat play by Parker but the visitors finished off the first half with a flourish as from a Ben Baker cross, Kelly won the ball in the air but saw his effort rebound from the crossbar and then St Ives had a credible shout for a penalty when Parker appeared to be brought down in the area but Referee Alex Rayment, perfectly placed, waved play on. However the first half had been an accurate reflection of the form and league positions of the two sides.

St Neots needed a positive response after the interval, but their only real early effort was a shot by Jack Daldy deflected for a corner. At the other end Kelly had a shot blocked by a defender and although St Neots were beginning to enjoy a greater share of possession the visitors produced the perfect tactics in reply. They filtered back playing confident containing football restricting the home side to opportunistic shooting from distance with goalkeeper Conway seldom in action. In one rare opportunity for the home side the hard-working Tom Wood saw a header rebound from the bar, but St Ives always looked in control and were happy to protect their narrow advantage. With just three at the back St Neots continued to dominate but failed to create genuine scoring opportunities despite introducing attacking substitutes. Jordan NorvilleWilliams volleyed over the bar when well placed and substitute Scott Sinclair back for the first time this

1

season, also shot well off target as St Neots’ frustration began to show. It could have ended badly in added time when St Neots was caught short ion defence and substitute Ollie Snaith was allowed time and space, but he failed to test Iron who save comfortably.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots Town This long awaited third home league victory of the season was a fully deserved reward for a determined St Neots performance. They were having to avenge a 5-0 defeat at Royston earlier in the season and they went into the match on the back of five successive league and cup defeats at the Premier Plus Stadium. Mid-table Royston nine places ahead of their hosts were unbeaten in their last three matches and began the match in a very positive way but St Neots matched them, and the result was a competitive encounter in the grey chilly conditions. The home side were without two key players – skipper Luke Knight and utility player Tom Wood – both serving suspensions, and Manager Matt Clements again shuffled his pack making four changes including a debut for seventeen years old impressive Northampton Town loanee Scott Pollock, but this time he significantly got the formula right. Into the side came full backs Matt Miles, Johnny Herd and Devante Stanley but the most significant change was the midfield pairing of Pollock and veteran Russell Short who had spent the last couple of months in defence.

There was an explosive start to the match with each side close to taking the lead twice in the opening quarter of an hour. St Neots shook off their ‘slow starters’ tag creating the first two chances only to be denied by some excellent goalkeeping by visiting custodian Joe Welch. Back in the side Devante Stanley found Dylan Williams on the edge of the area and his clever turn wrongfooted his marker but the keeper pushed his low shot away to be cleared. Then James Hall was twice involved in prising open the visiting defence as he collected a neat return pass from Jordan Norville-Williams only for

1

Royston Town

the keeper to smother bravely at his feet. Play moved to the other end where Ryan Hughes save his side clearing off the line from Vance Bola, and Tom Newman squandered a good opening shooting wide after good work by Josh Castiglione. The pace never really slackened with both sides playing attacking football as Finley Iron saved well from a Joe Newton free kick and Rohdell Gordon fired over after good play by Bola. Royston had to make an early substitution when Newman limped off injured, but his replacement Sam Corcoran quickly made an impact as he saw his effort rebound from the crossbar. Visiting skipper Dan Braithwaite robbed Devante Stanley when a St Neots goal looked certain and then Norville-Williams sent a free kick over the bar. Castiglione had the final first half chance, but Finley Iron saved well, and the sides went to the break wondering how the match was still goalless.

0

sent on Mason Rhiney urging his players to go in search of a winning goal. It eventually arrived eight minutes from time. A long Johnny Herd throw was returned to him and his second cross was powered into the net by Taylor Parr – appropriate reward for he had been a defensive stalwart for the home side. St Neots held out for the last few minutes and added time without the visitors’ threatening to spoil the party and now they must build on both confidence and this result in the second half of the season.

St Neots: Iron, Miles, Herd, Short, Hughes, Parr, Stanley, Pollock, Hall, Williams, Norville-Williams Subs: Sinclair (for Hughes 61 mins), Rhiney (for Miles 78 mins), Wharton and Gomes. Cards: Stanley (Y – 36 mins) Goals: Parr (82 mins)

Corcoran found the woodwork for a second time with a cross that bounced on top of the bar four minutes after the restart and Norville-Williams set up Stanley, but he fired wildly over the bar. After 56 minutes Royston got the ball in the net following a Castiglione cross, but St Neots were saved by an Assistant Referee’s flag and with Hughes suffering an injury, Scott Sinclair became the first St Neots’ substitute with Short moving back into defence. From a Williams free kick Hall fired wide after 73 minutes and then the industrious Scott Pollock set up Williams following a corner, but his effort was blocked by a defender. The pace slackened but St Neots were still the more impressive with Norville-Williams teasing the visiting defence with his pace. Pollock was driving St Neots forward and Hall had another effort blocked by a defender and in a bid to boost his tactics Clements

Royston: Welch, Joseph, Newton, Thomas, Murray, Braithwaite, Castiglione, Mentis, Bola, Newman, Gordon Subs: Corcoran (for Newman 26 mins), Gallin (for Gordon 68 mins), Scott-Morriss (for Castiglione 68 mins), Green and Oswick. Cards: none Goals: none
