Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium – Home of
the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Alvechurch FcC for their first ever visit to St Neots and we hope you all have an enjoyable stay with us here in Cambridgeshire. It was a case of mirror images with our recent back to back games with Leiston, with ourselves coming out on top with a 2-0 win here in our last home game with JNW and Dylan scoring our goals and then the hosts achieving the same scoreline in the return match on Saturday, this time with both teams losing a man in each half to red cards Tuesday evening saw us travel to Evostik League South Central Division side Yaxley FC, for our Huntingdonshire FA Senior Challenge Cup Semi Final and we progressed to our third successive Final with a penalty shootout win, after the match finished 2-2. Great to see Hally open his account with a decent header and JNW scored an absolute screamer from fully 25 yards. During the shootout, keeper Fin again played his part with two great saves and it was left to Knighty, Dyls and Woody to score the all-important spot kicks to send us through to a Final against either Godmanchester Rovers or Eynesbury Rovers, details of which will be published in due course. Back to today, please do your bit on the sidelines and hopefully the boys can repay your support as we seek a third home win on the spin.
Til next time…… BE LOUD… BE PROUD… BE A SAINT

FOOTBALL’S Coming Home at last for supporters in the south-west after Truro City announced this week they are to make a welcome return to Cornwall and play the remainder of their home games back at their Treyew Road home. The White Tigers were forced out of their home ground back in August with supermarket giant Lidl planning to build a store on the site. But now those plans have been shelved, the National League South club have been given the green light to return home and resume as the only senior football club in Cornwall. Truro had been playing their home games at Torquay United’s Plainmoor ground, meaning a gruelling 180-mile round trip for Tigers supporters. Naturally, that move badly hit fan attendance figures with the White Tigers averaging fewer than 200 fans per game because of the two-hour trip to south Devon. Their lowest recorded attendance was just 86 for their game against Hemel Hempstead Town in October, while just 52 ‘home supporters’ made the trip on New Year’s Day against their landlords with 2,760 ‘away’ fans making up an attendance figure of 2,812. In a statement, the club said: “We are pleased to confirm that Truro City Football Club will be playing the remainder of this season’s home Vanarama National League South and Buildbase FA Trophy matches at Treyew Road. “The move back has been necessitated for a number of reasons, including the late withdrawal of Helical from the retail development project. “It understood that the ground’s owners, JIL, are still in talks with Lidl and there is still a strong possibility that the development will still go ahead sometime in the future.” Now, at least with their own roof above their heads, Truro City can look to the future and a proposed move to the new 10,000-seater Stadium for Cornwall, which they would share with the Cornish Pirates rugby club. Work on that development has yet to begin with Helical, the firm which bought Treyew Road, still in discussions about settling Truro City's £2 million contribution towards the £12m project. At the time of writing this, Truro were due to kick off their first next Vanarama National League South home match at their new permanent home against south-west rivals Westonsuper-mare on Saturday January 19. The club added: “We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible supporting the team at Treyew Road between now and the end of the season.” If the Stadium of Cornwall really is, as promised, to become a future hotbed of senior football in the south-west, then it’s important that White Tigers fans embrace the present.

AVECHURCH FC Joined League: 1929 Manager: Ian Long Website: www.alvechurchfc.club
Club History Alvechurch The Early Years The earliest mention of a Football Club in Alvechurch dates back to 1913 when a team called Alvechurch Juniors was recorded. By the 1920s, the team were known as Alvechurch Swifts and were playing football on Crown Meadow and using the Red Lion Inn as their headquarters. They were a successful team winning the Redditch Cup and Shield in 1924. 1926 brought the General Strike followed by the depression. The club folded until late in 1929 when a team of young players, resurrected the Alvechurch Juniors name. To be called juniors the average age of the players had to be less than 21. The Meadows at the end of Meadow Lane, had been donated to the village by Col. Wiggins, making an ideal venue for the team. The team played successfully in the Redditch League until 1939, but was disbanded following the outbreak of war. It took a little while after the war for Alvechurch
Football Club to reestablish itself. Several village lads, after demobilisation, went to work at H.D.A. and joined the factory football team, which was a successful club playing in top class amateur football. When the village team was revived it attracted a number of these players. By 1948 a strong football committee had formed chaired by Major Border, with an excellent hard working secretary/ groundsman in Frank Bullock and an equally excellent treasurer in George Louch. The president was Harold Norton, a gentleman whose word was his bond and gave support by attending matches and providing team strips. The club became the hub of village life and a supporters club was formed under the chairmanship of Tom Atkins. The majority of the committee members were ladies, who organised social events such as the Christmas Whist Drive and on one occasion a Carnival with Roy Court and Angela Teague as the Prince and Princess. The club prospered from
the funds raised by these events. Few village clubs at the time could own and use three different coloured strips in a season and what is more to have a committee who ensured that the kit was washed after each match. The level of support for Alvechurch F.C. was such that for a needle match against Feckenham, six coach loads of supporters travelled from the village. During this successful period matches were still being played at the Meadows, but as this venue belonged to the village no admission charge could be made. A box would be passed round hoping for donations to the club, so when the opportunity arose to move to a new ground at the Guants, the club took the decision to do so. This was a field situated below the Church, off Snake Lane. Hence it was possible to make an admission charge, but when the land was required for building houses a further move was necessary. Mr Philip Palmer sold the field adjoining his house on Redditch Road to the club for ÂŁ1,000. As a result of determined fund raising,
the club was able to raise this sum in five years, this providing a permanent home – Lye Meadow. In 1955 the club achieved a rare accolade from the “Birmingham Sports Argus” newspaper when it was voted “ in the top ten in the midlands”. Junior League Clubs, never mind a Worcestershire village team, were rarely given that kind of coverage at the time, if at all. Lye Meadow The Glory Years The move to Lye Meadow in 1957 was the turning point in the clubs history and it began to go from strength to strength. Alvechurch finished runners-up in the West Midlands Alliance League In 1961 under the guidance of Rhys Davies they joined the Worcestershire Football (now Midland) Combination and claimed their first league title the following year. In twelve seasons they won the championship four times and were runners-up on five other occasions. They also claimed the League Challenge Cup five times and were runners-up twice in this period. The club captured the imagination and enthusiasm of the Midlands in the midsixties with the team’s giant-killing runs in the FA Amateur Cup. In
the 1964/65 season Alvechurch were the first side in the history of the Worcestershire FA to reach the quarter finals, before losing 3-1 at home to Enfield before an estimated crowd of 16,000. The following season they were one step from Wembley, reaching the semi final, played at Chelseas Stamford Bridge before losing 1-0 to Wealdstone in front of a 14,225 gate. In their second year in the FA Cup Church reached the first round proper in 1971/72 after the 11 hour, 6 match marathon in the Fourth Qualifying Round against Oxford City. This tie is now recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. However Alvechurch then went down 4-2 to Aldershot in the first round proper, in a match that was the 12th in 3 weeks for some of the team. In 1972/73 Church became the first amateur side to ever win the Worcestershire Senior Cup – retaining it the following year. In 1973/74 was, in fact the most successful season in the clubs history. Joining the West Midlands (Regional) League, the club won the Premier Division Championship, the League Challenge Cup, the Birmingham Senior Amateur Cup and the Worcestershire Senior Cup. In the FA Cup Church reached the Third Round Proper, going
down 4-2 at Bradford City after beating Exeter City at St James Park in the First Round Proper. In 1974/75, again Alvechurch achieved the West Midlands League and Cup double, despite losing five players, but were beaten in the final of the Worcestershire Senior Cup by a single goal. In 1975/76 the club completed a hat trick of League Championships and also won the Border Counties Floodlit League. In 1976/77 saw Church win the League Championship a fourth consecutive time and this was the year the Worcestershire Senior Cup and the Border Counties Challenge Cup returned to Lye Meadow. The club gained entry into the Southern League for the 1978/79 season and as the only true village club playing in the league finished in a creditable third position. 1980/81 saw another milestone for Alvechurch with the winning of the Midland Division and the Championship of the Southern League having beaten Southern Division Champions Dartford in the two legged final. The 1981/82 season produced a seesaw battle to retain the League Championship but Nuneaton finished the stronger to push Alvechurch into the runners-up position.
During that season Alan Smith gained international honours when representing the England Non-league team and subsequently joined Leicester City. He then joined Arsenal for £800,000 where he gained full international honours playing for England. It was back to success in the 1982/83 season when having gaining promotion to the Southern League Premier Division, the club won the Southern League Cup following a 7-2 aggregate win against Waterlooville. The club achieved it’s highest Southern Premier league finish in 1985/86, finishing 4th. The Decline Following the demise of benefactor Philip Palmer and the president Alan Wiseman, the club were relegated to the Midland Division of the Southern league at the end of the 1989/90 season, and there began a gradual decline. Geoff Turton of the Rockin’ Berries pop group stepped in to keep the club alive aided by the sale of Andy Comyn to Aston Villa for a club record fee of £30,000 At the end of the 1991/92 season, the club were relegated to the WMRL Premier Division. Financial speculators gained control of the club in 1992 resulting in closure the following November 1993.
The Resurrection In 1994 a dedicated band of supporters resurrected the club as Alvechurch Villa, rebuilding the seated stand and refurbishing the clubhouse to gain admission to the Midland Combination Premier Division, finishing in fifth position in the league and beaten finalists in the Smedley Crook Cup. The team went onto reach the League Cup Final the following season, only to lose out to League Champions Bloxwich Town. In 1996 the club reverted back to its original name and became simply, Alvechurch F.C. The next few seasons were a struggle but the 2000/01 season ended with clubs first trophy since being reformed, when the Smedley Crook Cup was won. Season 2001/02 introduced the management duo of Andy Hibbert and Neil Bryan, after a management and player exodus. The club struggled through the season, just escaping relegation finishing 20th. The board kept faith however and season 2002/03 witnessed Church’s best season in 20 years with the League and Cup double, winning the Midland Combination Premier League and Challenge Cup, a feat last completed in 1971/72. At the end of the season, Church where promoted
into the Midland Football Alliance. The MFA years In season 2003/04 the Worcestershire Senior Urn was won for the first time and then retained the following season. Season 2006/07 brought further success when the Worcester Infirmary Cup came to Lye Meadow for the first time, which was then retained the following year 2007/08. A double success was achieved that season with The Worcestershire Senior Urn returning to Lye Meadow for the third time. In season 2009/10 Church reached their highest league position since reforming by finishing 7th in the Midland Football Alliance. In the cup the Worcestershire Senior Urn was won for the 4th time of asking and the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup was reached, falling to a stoppage time winner against Nuneaton Town. Season 2010/11 proved to be a tumultuous one – with three sets of managers running the first team throughout the campaign. Church’s lowest MRA finish resulted in a run of poor results leading up to the end of the season could have seen the club in relegation trouble – but just enough points had been secured in the first
half of the campaign proved sufficient to maintain league status. 2011/12 saw a new management team in place, with Graham Scott/ Vaughan Pearshouse taking over the hot seat. Finishing 13th, they reached the final of the Worcester Senior Urn, where they lost 3-2 to Bewdley Town. 2012/13 the club finished 11th, following the appointment of Dean Holtham as manager in September, and won the Worcester Senior Urn, defeating Pershore Town on penalties after drawing 1-1 after 90. 2013/14, the club finished 13th, after their best ever start to a MFA campaign and reached the 3rd round proper of the FA Vase before going out 1-0 to Westfields. The season also saw Dean Holtham leaving in early November, being replaced by Ross Thorpe as manager. A new beginning The MFL 2014/15 saw the Midland Football Alliance and Midland Combination Leagues merge into the newly formed, Midland Football League, with Alvechurch playing in the Premier Division. Ross Thorpe was replaced at the end of August by new manager, Lee Adams, who himself was replaced by his assistant Lee Knight in January 2015. The club finished a
disappointing 15th. 2015/16 started with yet another new management team in place, with former Tividale, title winning management team of Ian Long and his assistant, Richard Colwell taking charge and bringing most of their squad with them from Tividale. The club amassed a record 101 points and 99 goals scored, finishing runnersup to phoenix club, Hereford F.C. The club also won the Worcester Senior Urn, beating Bromsgrove Sporting 3-0 in the final. 2016/17 saw the club finally win the Midland Football League Premier Division, beating Coleshill Town by six points with 92 points to gain promotion to step 4. They won the league and cup double by beating Hinckley AFC 2-1 in the Polymac Packaging League Cup Final at Walsall F.C. and completed a historic treble when they beat Wednesfield 4-1 in the final of the J.W. Hunt Cup at Molineux. On the UP 2017/18 saw the club promoted to the Northern Premier League Division One South and achieve back to back promotions, finishing runners up to Basford United and gaining promotion to Step 3 at the first attempt. 2018/19 sees the club, with the re-organisation
of Non-league at steps 3-4, compete in the new Southern League Premier Division Central. Already the club has won its first silverware of the season, beating Redditch United to claim the Worcester Senior Cup for the first time since 1977.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
St Neots Town Back to back league victories for the first time this season has lifted St Neots three points clear of the relegation zone for the first time for a month. Suffolk visitors Leiston visiting the Town for the first time were sent back down the A14 with little to show for their ninety minutes effort. St Neots could and should have won by a greater margin for the were the dominant force in the first 45 minutes and more than shared possession after the break with home keeper Finley Iron have only one serious save to make. This was in part tribute to a compact and confident display by St Neots’ central defenders Ryan Hughes and Taylor Parr who shackled the free scoring visiting attack that has netted more than twice the number of goals scored by the host side this season. Undefeated in their last six games Leiston had climbed to the top half of the table after a poor November but they were well beaten in this encounter. St Neots had an enforced team change when full back Matty Miles failed to recover from an injury sustained in the Royston game and so Scott Sinclair got his first start since returning to the side after a voluntary break. However, St Neots kept their loyal group of noisy fans waiting because despite leading for more than ninety minutes they kept the faithful waiting until added time for the clinching goal from the penalty spot. St Neots received a massive early boost when they scored their quickest goal of the season when Jordan Norville-Williams ghosted in at the neat post to flick home a Devante Stanley cross in just two minutes after St Neots had broken clear from a Leiston attack. It was the youngster’s first goal of the season – deserved reward for his non-stop effort in both attack and defence. St Neots’ early pressure continued with several corners and then after seven minutes a Dylan Williams free kick only just cleared
2
Leiston
the cross bar. Williams was then the provider with a delightful reverse pass to Scott Pollock coming quickly forward from midfield, but his shot whistled just a foot wide with visiting keeper Marcus Garnham beaten. James Hall still searching for his first goal since his return to the squad, then fired wide following a corner and the home side thought they were hard done by when Stanley was brought down in the penalty area, but justified penalty appeals were ignored by the Referee. Finley Iron had to save at the feet of Kyle Hammond as Leiston struggled to get a meaningful attacking presence in the game and St Neots then created three good chances in the five minutes leading up to half time. Williams showed sublime skill to outwit two defenders but saw his shot blocked by a third, Johnny Herd curled a shot wide of the far post and then Stanley set up Williams to force a good save from Garnham. St Neots needed to quickly reestablish their confident approach after the interval and in the first minute Norville-Williams sped down the left leaving his marker in his wake and his cross split the defence, but Hall was unable to muster a meaningful finish. Sebastian Dunbar had a shot deflected and when Scott Sinclair gave the ball away in midfield, Matthew Blake was left with time and space, but he delayed his shot and Ryan Hughes blocked at the expense of a corner. Stanley then headed over the bar after 70 minutes and play then moved to the other end where a corner afforded defender Harry Knights with a free head, but he put the ball over the bar. Another well-placed Williams free kick after 78 minutes brought the save of the match from Garnham and Hall then cut in but only found the side netting. With time running down Leiston chanced their arms forward and the St Neots defence had to repel several promising attacking moves that came to
0 nothing. Then two minutes into added time home substitute Gary Wharton fired in a low cross to the near post handled by Knights and the Referee awarded the penalty for Dylan Williams to confidently stroke home for his fifth goal of the season to confirm the three points haul. A late Leiston attack saw Taylor Parr clear off the St Neots line – the only real late threat to the home sides’ important victory.

Just four days on from their first league meeting these two sides suffered contrasting fortunes in the quick return match. St Neots had enforced team changes and seemingly far less method than in the first meeting and the result was a complete turn-around of score line and points reward. With James Hall unavailable and the pair of Northampton Town loanee’s defender Ryan Hughes and midfielder Scott Pollock, recalled by their parent club to play in a youth fixture, St Neots welcomed back skipper Luke Knight after suspension and recalled Gary Wharton and Matt Miles – the latter after injury. However, the visitors were far from their best – unable to put together and real convincing attacking moves, whilst the home side used the pitch well stretching the visiting defence to create openings, and despite playing with ten men for half an hour before a Neots red card levelled the numbers, they thoroughly deserved their victory. St Neots looked only a shadow of the side that came into this match on the back of their first two consecutive league victories of the season and with a County Cup to defend in a midweek semi-final they must swiftly regroup and rebuild confidence. St Neots almost conceded a goal in the opening minute when Luke Knight clumsily upended Kyle Hammond on the edge of the penalty area, but the home player climbed to his feet to send the free kick narrowly over the bar. St Neots responded with a quick counter-attack as Devante Stanley fed Gary Wharton but he fired across goal from an oblique angle. Finley Iron then had to save bravely at the feet of Hammond as Leiston began to assert themselves and Byron Lawrence sent Christy Finch clear, but he shot well wide as Iron narrowed his angle. After 21 minutes the wily Jordan Norville Williams was crudely brought
St Neots Town down by Harry Knights earning the home defender a straight red card – a chance for the visitors to push home their advantage. However apart from one off-target effort by Stanley this never materialised and after Tom Bullard had headed against the bar for Leiston from a corner, they deservedly took the lead on the half hour when the unmarked Patrick Brothers was given far too much space on the left and he curled a sublime chip over the keeper and under the bar at the far post. St Neots managed a brief rally as Dylan Williams had a net-bound shot blocked and a second well gathered by Marcus Garnham. Before the break Luke Knight picked up a strange booking as he appeared to push one of his own players! St Neots still sought to push home heir numerical advantage after the break but after Knight had sent a free kick in a prominent position wide of target and after only six minutes of the second half, parity in numbers was restored when Devante Stanley became the second player in the match to be shown a straight red card after a late high tackle on Bullard. St Neots regrouped with Norville-Williams pushed well forward but six minutes after the St Neots dismissal, the home side effectively clinched all three points with a second goal. It came as a result of some shoddy defending with wide man Lawrence going past his marker to send in a low shot that was deflected to the unmarked Noel Aitkens at the far post for a simple tap-in goal. Leiston quickly stated their objective of sitting on their enhanced advantage taking off two attacking players and defending deep in their own half challenging St Neots to take the game to them. However they almost got a third goal on the break when Scott Sinclair missed a header presenting Brothers with an open chance, but he shot wide.
0 St Neots huffed and puffed with little result although they did try to play some constructive football to get the ball forward. From a late free kick Taylor Parr had a header comfortably saved by Garnham and from a Sinclair cross Gary Wharton missed St Neots best chance for a late consolation goal, before bringing a good save from the home keeper with the final chance of the match.

HUNTINGDONSHIRE SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL
Yaxley
2
St Neots Town
2
(St Neots won 3-2 on penalties) With half of the standard ten penalties either missed or saved the outcome of this Hunts Senior Cup semi-final was until doubt until literally the last kick of the match. The outcome of the match could and should have been decided by half time because St Neots dominated much of the first half and created chance after chance but lower graded Yaxley repelled their efforts with home keeper James Blake producing several good saves. Then after the break Yaxley came back with a vengeance and the confidence seemed to be drained from the visiting side who, nevertheless, could have snatched a winning goal before the ultimate penalty shoot-out. Yaxley are enjoying their first ever season at Step Four of the pyramid in the Southern League Division One Central and have made a good start presently sitting half way up the table with much the same squad as won their promotion from the UCL. The last time the two clubs met was in the Senior Cup was three seasons ago – a quarter final tie won by the visitors 6-1 with Tom Meechan, Adam Tann, Luis Vieira, Claudio Ofosu, Tom Ward and Isaac Galliford their goal scorers. Unsurprisingly St Neots no survivors from that team in the squad for that meeting. Yaxley last lifted the Senior Cup in 2007/08 beating St Ives in a penalty shoot-out but have been beaten finalist twice since then. St Neots Manager Matt Clements made several changes from the side that had lost at Leiston restoring Ryan Hughes and Tom Wood in defence and James Hall to lead the attack, as well as handing full debut to Mason Rhiney in midfield with Taylor Parr unavailable and Russell Short, Scott Sinclair and Gary Wharton on the substitutes bench. The match got off to an explosive start with both sides scoring in their first credible attack. St Neots were swiftly out of the blocks as Jordan Norville-Williams chased a long cross ball to the corner flag before skilfully turning his marker and crossing for James Hall to rise above the home defence to head home – his first goal since his return to the club on New Years Day. Yaxley’s response was swift and effective as two minutes later the visiting defence failed to
clear, and Dan Cotton returned the ball to the far post for Dalton Harris to level the scores. St Neots then took over with Dylan Williams hauled down on the edge of the area and from Johnny Herd’s free kick, Ryan Hughes saw his shot rebound from a post into the grateful arms of home keeper James Blake after eleven minutes. Three minutes later Williams saw an effort rebound from the crossbar and from a Luke Knight corner, Norville-Williams had his shot cleared off the line by Sam Spencer. However, the pressure paid off and after 18 minutes St Neots regained the lead when Jordan NorvilleWilliams unleashed a surprise shot from 25 yards to beat Blake’s desperate dive. The tempo then dropped with St Neots continuing to dominate with Williams twice going close, Blake producing the save of ther match to deny Devante Stanley, and Herd slicing through the home defence to be upended by Kyle Nolan on the edge of the penalty area, earning the Yaxley player a rather fortunate yellow card when the home side might have been reduced to ten men. If Yaxley had failed to test visiting keeper Finley Iron in the first half, they swiftly made amends after the break, with Matt Sparrow cutting in to see his low shot well saved and then Lewis Hook squandered an excellent chance firing wildly over the bar. Fraser Sturgess also tested Iron and after 57 minutes a Cotton shot was blocked on the goal line. St Neots seemed to regain their rhythm and they replied around the hour with a Knight shot that was deflected for a corner and Hall then set up the unmarked Williams ten yards from goal, but Blake bravely saved his point-blank effort. Substitutions by both sides followed in a bid to grasp the initiative and one of the newcomers, Scott Sinclair burst through with a fierce shot just shy of the angle of post and bar. The last ten minutes was phrenetic as both sides threw caution to the wind. It was Yaxley who produced the decisive moment as a long cross by Cotton found substitute James Ward who levelled the scores with nine minutes remaining. St Neots responded with Norville-Williams
heading over the bar and Knight seeing a free kick well saved. Yaxley will rue their missed late opportunities with substitute Tom Waumsley breaching the visiting defence but firing straight at Iron, and Sparrow shooting across the face of goal when left unmarked. In time added Herd then cleared off the line to earn St Neots their penalty shoot- out. Waumsley fired the first spot kick over the bar to hand the visitors the initiative and the goalkeepers both made two excellent saves to extend the drama but with Luke Knight and Dylan Williams scoring for St Neots and James Ward and Joe Butterworth successful for Yaxley it was left to Tom Wood to become the unlikely St Neots hero as he fired home the tenth spot kick. Holders St Neots will now face either the Rovers of Eynesbury or Godmanchester in the end of
season Cup Final.
Yaxley: Blake, Duncliffe, Eagleton, Nolan, Spencer, Bettles, Sparrow, Hook, Harris, Cotton, Sturgess Subs: Waumsley (for Harris 56 mins), Ward (for Nolan 71 mins), Butterworth (for Sturgess 76 mins), Stebbing and Watson.
