Greeny’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.

Today we extend a warm welcome to Berkhamsted FC and we hope their players, officials and supporters enjoy their visit To St Neots Town before travelling safely home later this tea time. A frustrating time at present with the awful weather conditions playing havoc

with fixtures up and down the country and of course our latest outing was called off on Saturday morning with the pitch at Chesham ( Aylesbury United’s home) waterlogged after the latest storm battered the country. As I’m penning these notes , the weather forecast for the weekend looks favourable so hopefully we will be able to get the game on. Congratulations to HALESOWEN TOWN, who defeated BARNET 2-1 on Saturday to reach the semi final stage of the FA Trophy. They will face either Concord Rangers or ROYSTON TOWN in the two-legged last four tie. Quite amazing this season that we potentially could have either a step 4 or Step 3 side walking out at Wembley in May. Unfortunately myself and a few others will be absent from today’s game as we will be in Spain for our annual visit to Benidorm’s finest establishments but we will be watching from afar.

Please get behind the lads once again today, they really do appreciate your support off the pitch.

A FEW years back, a manager - who will remain nameless - of a then-Conference club finished giving his post-match interview. His side had just lost an FA Trophy quarter-final. He’d said all the things you’d expect. Disappointed that his side had been below par, frustrated at the goals they’d conceded and rued the missed opportunity of a trip to Wembley. Then, after checking the assembled press had got what they needed and all dictaphones were off, he cheered, ‘I’m so glad we’re out!’ In truth, you could partly see his point. They were going for promotion, something the club desperately wanted and the additional games could have been a tipping point. But the Trophy has had a bit of a kicking in recent years. Managers moaning about fixture pile-ups, calls for it to become a midweek competition, there was even a spell when the final was moved to March in a bid to help those Step 1 clubs. Thankfully the FA have held their ground and moving the finals back to Wembley in May - as they have been in recent years since the inception of Non-League Finals Day - has restored the showpiece final to its rightful place. And it’s a competition that has thrown up some wonderful stories. Not least this season with the incredible run of Step 4 duo Halesowen Town and Aveley. Both caused upsets on their way to the quarter-final, where Aveley finally bowed out in front of 500 travelling fans at Notts County. Manager Keith Rowland couldn’t have been prouder of his players and spoke about how it has helped their league form. Now their focus returns to winning promotion from the BetVictor Isthmian Division One North. For Halesowen the journey, remarkably, continues. An extra-time win against Barnet keeps their dream alive and is conjuring memories of their famous past when they were a big Non-League hitter in the 70s and 80s. No one would have called the Yeltz reaching the final four. But 13 games later - including replays - Paul Smith’s side are a two-legged semi-final away from reaching Wembley. At the time of writing they don’t know who their semi opponent will be. National League South Concord Rangers saw their quarter-final with Step 3 Royston postponed at the weekend. Both those sides are also enjoying fantastic runs of their own. It’s been the year of the underdog in Non-League’s top cup comp. On the face of it, all three will be thinking they’re unlikely to get a better chance of getting to the famous stadium. National League pair Harrogate Town and Notts County make up the other semi. But the unpredictability is what makes the football so exciting. One lucky club will be climbing the Wembley steps victorious not too long from now. Yes, there will be a knock-on effect with their league fixtures. But what a great problem to have - if you get there.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

BERKHAMSTED FC Year founded: 2009

Chairman: Steve Davis

WELCOME ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS BERKHAMSTED WHO VISIT US HERE AT THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Berkhamsted were promoted to Step Four of the National League system for the first-time last season less than a decade after forming in the ashes of the defunct Berkhamsted Town. So, in less than a decade they have progressed up to this level of football and are now mounting a determined and very convincing bid for further promotion. As things stood after last weekend, they were a close second in the league table behind leaders Halesowen Town needing around twenty points from their final twelve matches to guarantee at the minimum a play-off place at the end of the season. Last season in their debut at Step Four they narrowly missed out on a play-off place in their first Southern League season finishing sixth and finishing with the best goal difference outside that top five.

Club Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/berkhamstedfootballclub

Earlier this season we made our first trip to Berkhamsted where after trailing 2-0 in the first half we got back in to the match with a Prince Mutswunguma goal just before the break, but the sending off of Jonny Butler late in the match saw us concede a late third goal to lose 3-1. With eight wins and a draw in their last nine matches they would be few who would bet against Berkhamsted making rapid and significant further progress in the immediate future. Like us our visitors had to suffer a blank weekend last time around but hopefully we are all now back to football. Club History The club was founded in 2009 after Berkhamsted Town folded, taking the name of a club that had played in the Herts County League in the early 20th century. They joined Division Two of the Spartan South Midlands League, winning it in their first season and earning promotion to Division One. The following season they won Division One with 107

points and were promoted to the Premier Division. Their points total was the highest in the National League System and saw the Herts County FA award the club the Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy. The 2012–13 season saw Berkhamsted win the St Mary’s Cup, beating Tring Athletic 3–1 in the final. In 2014–15 they won the Premier Division Cup, beating Colney Heath 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw. The club won the Hertfordshire Charity Shield in 2016–17 with a 3–2 win over Tring Athletic in the final. In 2017–18 the club were runners-up in the Premier Division of the South Midlands League, earning promotion to Division One East of the Southern League. The club play at Broadwater, located between the Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line. The ground has a seated stand on one side of the pitch, with an uncovered terrace adjacent to it. There is also covered terracing behind both goals.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Daventry Town With three key players missing St Neots fell to a fourth consecutive away league defeat – this time at Daventry. Having had the better of a blustery first half facing into the wind, the expectation of a change in fortune looked possible and then, going on to take the lead after the break seemed to strengthen further that expectation. However, they then gifted their hosts two goals and did not raise the skill or ability to hit back for at least a point. Now four of their most recent defeats have been as a result of just an odd goal difference in the final score line, and so they seem unable to change the outcome of closely fought contests. Still missing from the starting line-up was on-loan striker Joe Neal who has been restricted by injury to just four appearances, along with another forward Sam Gomersall who has what could be a lengthy illness. Joining that pair was current team skipper Tom Boxer who was sitting out the first of his two matches ban following his sending off at Yaxley. Into the side came Rajan Badiani for his full debut following three very brief substitute appearances, with Steven Shaw reinstated in defence. Also, back into the side from the substitutes’ bench came leading scorer Prince Mutswunguma who responded with his ninth league goal of the season – with Lewis Foster starting on the bench. The first fifteen minutes were competitive but with the conditions testing there was only a single shot on target – that from new boy Rajan Badiani who failed to test home custodian James Martin. Daventry responded with Jack Bowen finding space in the penalty area to head over from an Aaron King corner. King then cleverly created space but shot well wide and gradually St Neots began to dominate proceedings. Martin did well at

full length to deny Lewis Simper after the young midfielder had started and finished one of St Neots’ better attacking moves, Sutton set up chances with several searching crosses, and Prince Mutswunguma leading the visiting attack saw his effort blocked by a defender. The half ended with Jarvis Wilson earning the first of four home side bookings for upending the lively Sutton. After suffering a painful foot injury, Sam Goode failed to reappear after the break and was replaced by Lewis Foster with a noticeable visiting side reorganisation. Foster went to lead the attack with little success, Mutswunguma was withdrawn to a deeper role, Panny Boxer moved into central defence with Stevan Shaw moving to fill the vacant full back berth. Initially it did not seem to upset St Neots rhythm and just before the hour a clever through pass from Simper found Prince Mutswunguma with his back to goal but he turned to shed his marker and shot across the diving Martin to open the scoring. However, any feeling of pleasure was almost quickly extinguished as just ninety seconds later a cross from the right saw Boxer and Tom Dickens going for the same clearance which neither achieved, leaving ball to run through to the unmarked Aaron King who was brought down by the St Neots keeper as he tried to go past him. That resulted in a booking for Finley Iron and a successful penalty converted by Jake Bowen, the leading home goal scorer. That seemed to knock St Neots confidence and their play became ragged as Daventry introduced two fresh substitutes. After fifteen minutes of inconsequential play the home side were attacking again and in the slickest move of the game substitute Michael Gyasi rounded his marker to pull

1 the ball back to Jake Bowen who rapped the ball home to give his side the lead. At that point Daventry clearly opted to sit on their lead and they deliberately slowed the game unashamedly smothering St Neots’ attempts to get back on terms. As a result the Referee added on almost eight minutes of added time and it was during that spell that St Neots created their best opportunity of a late share of the spoils when a long ball found Joe Sutton free on the right and his measured shot beat the dive of the goalkeeper but passed just the wrong side of the far post. St Neots: Iron, Goode, Smith, Boxer (P), Shaw, Dickens, Sutton, Watkins, Mutswunguma, Simper, Badiani Subs: Foster (for Goode 46 mins), Joseph, O’Hara and Hudson.
