Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for this afternoon’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Today we extend a warm welcome to our friends and near neighbours of Biggleswade Town and we hope you enjoy your brief stay with us before returning down the A1 back over the County border into Bedfordshire.

Four points out of six for our young squad following our recent 1-0 defeat of Barwell here and

more recently, the eventful 1-1 draw up at Redditch United, a game in which the hosts were reduced to eight men and we conceded very late on to return with just the one point rather than the three up for grabs. Disappointing yes, but at the same time, let us not forget these are young lads, many of whom are playing at Step 3 men’s football regularly for the first time and had our new keeper, JAMES PHILP (welcome to James, who joined us prior to the Barwell match), not saved a first half penalty, we may well have come home empty handed, so please, before you vent your frustrations on social media, please remember, nobody will have been more gutted than those lads out on the pitch and for them to read negative comments will not help the cause so let’s focus on the positives in what we already knew was going to be an extremely tricky end to the season and get behind them 100 percent.

The Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division title is within grasping distance for our

Scholars, having beaten Mildenhall Town (5-0) and Cambridge City (1-0) most recently , they were due to face the only real team who have a realistic chance of catching them, Haverhill Rovers, at the Premier Plus Stadium on Monday evening . At the time of writing, the result was unknown, however a match report should appear in this edition along with the Cambridge City report so fingers crossed, we could be just one win away from retaining the title for a third consecutive year.

Apologies today as we are very light on the ground here at the game as it is our annual pilgrimage to Benidorm will all be continuation

(all booked before the fixtures are released) but rest assured, we cheering on the boys from some sunny beach bar, hoping for a of our good form and a reward for our efforts. Til Next time….

BE LOUD… BE PROUD… BE A SAINT

Gaffer’s Notes‌ With Manager

Today we welcome Biggleswade Town FC to the Premier Plus Stadium - With our visitors

currently occupying 8th place and ourselves sitting in 20th place. We hope that all of their supporters and club officials present enjoy their time at the game today.

Since our last home game versus Barwell FC where we showed fantastic character and determination in coming away with 3 valuable points, the players have really grown and matured - they have all shown a fantastic attitude, training professionally & preparing themselves for the Saturday match in the right manner.

Last weekend we travelled to Redditch United FC, where we knew the importance to maintain a small gap between ourselves & Redditch. The game started with Philpsy making a couple of important saves, a pattern which was similar to the Barwell game. Then on four minutes, Gary Wharton showed what an important player he will be over the next 11 games, with a fantastic finish from distance. The game then became broken up with many bookings / red cards without us really managing the game well enough at key times in the game, leading to Redditch scoring a breakaway goal in the 92nd minute. A disappointing 2nd half performance, however, the courage that these young players have shown over recent weeks has been 1st class and individually there has been some exciting performances from players with experience in Matty Miles, Scott Pollock and Gary Wharton. Our young players have really challenged themselves too and look hungry to become better players with many good individual performances whilst picking up 4 points in 2 matches which is a positive return. Today we head into our run of back to back home games and start with Biggleswade Town FC,

from my time at Haverhill where I played versus Lee Allison’s team in pre-season, I know that we will be in for a tough game with their style of play, the experience and quality they possess. They will continue to push for the play offs, however have experienced some difficulties in recent weeks with injuries, suspensions etc so we will be approaching the game positively and I am sure over young team will not fail to deliver another excellent performance.

We hope you have much

you all enjoy the game and continue your fantastic support all shown over recent weeks which has been, as always, very appreciated.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

BIGGLESWADE TOWN FC Joined League: 1874 Chairman: Maurice Dorrington Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/biggleswadetownfc

1874 - 1954 - the First 80 Years Biggleswade Town were originally formed as Biggleswade F.C. in 1874 and began by playing friendlies. They became one of the founder members of the Biggleswade and District League in 1902/03 and won the championship at the first attempt. The successful season was climaxed by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup - the first of eight victories so far in the competition. The ‘Waders’, as the club are known, first entered the FA Cup in 1904. 2008 - Chris Nunn became manager in Nov 06 after a very poor start to the season saw the team heading for certain relegation. In Feb 07 the team had made up a lot of points but were still bottom of the Premier table. The team avoided relegation on the last league day of the season. The winning of the NBC Cup in the very last match of the campaign reinforced that optimism. The 2007/08 season saw the squad develop further with new signings and for the first time in 15 years the club found itself top of the division at one point. A final position of 3rd was a result of hard work and changes gradually moving the club forward. As the 2008/09 season beckoned, the new Stadium was ready for occupation and the

seasons in the ‘wilderness of ground sharing’ were over. For the first time in the clubs 134year history, it finally had a home of its very own. 2008 – 2009 - Moving into the new ground certainly created a great feeling at the Club and new faces began to appear on the playing side as well as behind the scenes. As the final whistle blew on the last friendly there was a definite feeling of readiness for the forthcoming season. The Wader’s first season (2009-10) at Step Four proved a tough start but gradually the team strengthened and finished in a comfortable twelfth place with the team taking points off every side that season except Bury Town and Hitchin Town who finished first and second respectively.

2010-2011 - This season saw the Waders climb to their highest ever position in the football pyramid, finally finishing in 4th place and with the resultant position in the playoffs. Waders travelled to 3rd place Daventry Town, a team they had previously beaten both home and away in the regular season. Football being football, Daventry ran out easy winners ending Waders hopes of promotion.

2011-2012 - This season saw the Waders fade as season progressed. Having topped the league early in the season, injuries and suspensions took its toll and the season finished with a top half finish just outside the play offs. 2012-2013 - Winning the 2012/13 Playoff final secured a place in the Southern League Premier, was upstaged by the best ever season in the club’s 140-year history, finishing 9th in our first Premier season, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to a well organised Stourbridge side. Season ended with Waders beating Luton Town at Luton to lift the County Cup. 2013-2014 - First season ever at step three and the Waders feel they have arrived. Finishing a creditable 9th in the table and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in the club’s history put the club in the record books. The Waders were the draw specialist of the premier division and had they converted the drawn games to winning ones, they would have finished in the play-off positions. Winning the Beds Senior Cup for the second successive season was the icing on the cake. 2014-2015 - This season was a real test for the Waders, with injuries both on and off the

field. Long term injuries meant bringing in loan players and they all played their part. 2015-2016 - A difficult season for the Waders, Southern League gets harder every season, an injection of new players helped steer the ship. 2016-2017 - Having established their premier status the Waders went on to achieve their highest points total and finished just outside the play-offs in a creditable 7th position 2017-2018 - Tough season with the club suffering a number of significant injuries ended with a Mid Table finish and a narrow loss to Luton Town in the Beds Senior Cup Final.

Biggleswade Town FC Squad – 2018/19 Sam Donkin - Sam has returned to Biggleswade Town as our no.1, previously having played for Stamford, Corby and Whitehawk. Lucas Perry - this will be Lucas’s 3rd season as a Wader. Lucas is an outstanding defender playing at left back. Previous clubs Barton Rovers and Luton Town FC. Tom Smith - A new signing and new club captain Tom is a commanding centre half and good leader. His previous clubs were Hayes and Yeading and Barton Rovers. SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots Town St Neots recorded their first home win since 8th January and only their second in the last seven league outings, but more significantly their first win since the defection of eight senior players. All this after they were rocked in the week by the news that regular goalkeeper Finley Iron had been recalled by his parent club Cambridge United after making 39 appearance for the side. New Manager Marc Abbott moved quickly to sign Haverhill based Birmingham University student James Philip for a ‘baptism of fire’ as they hosted Barwell whom had won 6-1 in the first meeting of the two sides in December. If there was a prize for sheer determination and commitment in addition to the three points, that would have been in the bag as well, after they had despatched their Leicestershire visitors. They had to survive a torrid first half hour and ride their luck as the visitors were denied three times by the woodwork, but few could deny they deserved their reward with some heroic defending. In addition to the replacement goalkeeper the Manager made two team changes leaving Mason Rhiney and Joe Rider on the bench in order to bring in Joe Sutton for his full debut as well as recalling Prince Mutswunguma. Barwell began full of intent and confidence producing five shots on goal in the opening six minutes. Two of those brought significant saves from the new keeper as he denied Jacob Whitmore with his legs before pushing a fierce shot from Nigel Julien around a post for a corner. The one-way traffic continued but with less intensity as Daniel Durkin volleyed high over the bar and Elliott Percival’s effort was also too high after he had stolen in unmarked at the far post. St Neots replied with a shot from Prince Mutswunguma

1

Barwell

that was comfortably saved and in another attack Joe Sutton’s delightful flick played in Gary Wharton, but he delayed his shot and was robbed. After 23 minutes Jamie Towers could hardly believe his luck when his close range shot rebounded from a goalpost and then Durkin showed great skill to draw Philip from his line to chip over him towards goal, but Ryan Hughes got back to clear off the line. Sutton looked lively for St Neots and visiting keeper Liam Castle needed two attempts to keep out his rising shot and then in the five minutes before the break Barwell created two chances that should have seen them take a lead into the break. First Whitmore beat his marker to find the head of Dominic Brown-Hill, but his free header was wastefully too high and then Towers was left unmarked at the far post but saw his looping header bounce off the top of the crossbar to safety. Upon the restart St Neots looked more confident and were only denied a goal after 49 minutes when Castle produced a superb full length save to deny Scott Pollock after the St Neots player had ridden three tackles. A close-range Durkin header from a Percival cross rebounded from a post – the third time the woodwork had intervened, and by now St Neots stalwarts were beginning to think that this could be their day. Their belief was further cemented when less than a minute after coming on as a substitute on the hour, a first-time delightful flick over the defence by Jacob Joseph freed Gary Wharton and his non-stop effort was rewarded as he claimed what was to be the winning goal. However Barwell were not surrendering with a fight and they threw on attacking substitutes in a bid to retrieve their situation. An Eliot Putman free kick was well saved

0

by Philip, and substitute Jai Rowe shot wide when he should have at least tested the keeper. St Neots one anxious moment came sixteen minutes from time when Philip mishandled an Alex Tomkinson cross and had Stevan Shaw to thank as the defender cleared off the line. St Neots now had to concede possession and concentrate on defence but despite their pressure Barwell managed only one further significant shot by substitute Rowe that passed the wrong side of a post. St Neots deservedly celebrated at the final whistle, and the confidence boost will have been almost as important as the victory. St Neots: Philip, Hood, NorvilleWilliams, Miles, Hughes, Shaw, Beckley, Pollock, Wharton, Sutton, Mutswunguma Subs: Joseph (for Beckley 60 mins), Rider (for Wharton 81 mins), Rhiney (for Mutswunguma 87 mins) and Fulianty. SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

Redditch United A point away at Redditch is on paper an acceptable return as the St Neots youngsters find their feet in their new surroundings but with the equalising goal coming three minutes into added time from a host side with just EIGHT players on the pitch, it felt like a defeat on the way home. The match was marked and eventually dominated and spoiled by an over-zealous Referee who finished up with a tally of nine yellow cards and three reds. To the casual reader of these facts it sounds like it was a physical bad-tempered affair but that is nowhere near the truth. The majority of the cautions were for dissent – either verbal of frustratedly kicking the ball away when a free kick was awarded – several times in error – although two of Redditch’s dismissals were straight red cards for cynical and dangerous fouls. In the final analysis St Neots were guilty of being caught out by their own inexperience because their tactics were not good as they failed to take full advantage of their growing numerical advantage and should not have been caught lacking defensive concentration in that added time. Overall the performance was encouraging as they held their opponents at bay after stealing an early lead, and they received a massive boost when rookie goalkeeper James Philip saved a first half penalty kick in only his second appearance for the club. However, it will go down as two points lost when a victory would have lifted them out of the relegation zone. There was just one team change with Mason Rhiney preferred to Harry Beckley in midfield. The visitors got the perfect start when after just three minutes Scott Pollock sent a though ball in the heart of the home defence and Garry Wharton with his back to goal sidestepped a challenge and hit a low shot past Adam Whitehouse for his second goal in successive matches. Two

1

St Neots Town

minutes later he won a header from a Pollock free kick which passed the wrong side of a post. Redditch thought they should have had a penalty after 20 minutes when Philip was exposed, and he rushed from his line to collide with Jack Storer but the Referee waved play on. With two player booked early in the first half the home side looked frustrated and created few openings but from a Robbie Bunn corner Richard Batchalor should have got his free header on target. On the break St Neots were looking good with Joe Sutton only inches wide after good work by Mason Rhiney and a lengthy Pollock shot well saved by Whitehouse. Five minutes before the break Redditch pressed and won a penalty kick following a handball offence by a defender. Leading home marksman Danico Johnson hit a fierce effort to Philip’s right, but the keeper guessed correctly and parried the effort. Then approaching the break Pollock was cynically brought down by Batchalor to earn the first red card of the afternoon so Redditch went to the break a man down. Unfortunately the injury sustained by the inspirational Pollock in that incident meant he was unable to continue after the break, so Harry Beckley came on as his replacement. Redditch also made two early second half substitutions and one of them Michael Nelson quickly tested Philip and the keeper also saved well from Shaquille LeachmanWhittingham. Although Redditch were clearly intent on an attacking approach and were able to dominate possession despite being that man short, they created few direct openings as the match became a midfield contest with the Referee taking the attention as he flashed his cards. After 72minutes Michael McGrath got on the end of a Robbie Bunn corner and pushed the ball over the line with a hand. Already

1

booked he picked up a second yellow card and an early bath. At that stage St Neots should have tried to push home their advantage but they concentrated on containing the home side. The final five minutes plus four added were manic with three more yellow cards and a straight red card for Jamie Ashmore. However in the third added minute Bunn was left unmarked to fire in a low shot to earn an unlikely point for the home side.

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION CAMBRIDGE CITY U 18 St Neots took another huge stride towards the league title with a narrow and rather nervy victory over second in the table Cambridge City. The result almost certainly extinguishes the home side’s lingering chances of taking the title and now there are just three games remaining for St Neots. The next and critical test comes on Monday at the Premier Plus Stadium when third placed Haverhill are the visitors and a victory for St Neots could snuff out the chances of the Suffolk side. Now eleven points ahead at the top of the table St Neots are undefeated in the league since their opening game back in August and seemingly moving towards a third consecutive league title. St Neots looked well in control from the start. After the home side had won an early corner headed wide by Alfie Lawrence the game settled with St Neots dominating possession and creating goalscoring openings. From a Sam Routs corner Joe Rider had a header cleared off the line and then home keeper Brad Green saved

0

ST NEOTS TOWN U18

well from an effort by Dan Olive. Leon Fulianty joined the attack but shot well wide and the main St Neots threat was coming down the right flank through Reif Clarke who was brought down three times earning Jamie Baxter the first caution of the match. What proved to be the winning goal came in the 34th minute when a delightful through ball by Sam Routs released Jacob Joseph and he took his time to beat the home keeper. Towards half time Harry Farrow missed a half chance for the home side in a rare attack and then St Neots should have increased their lead when Adrian O’Hara shot wide when well-placed after good work by Brad Brown. St Neots seemed to adopt a more defensive approach after the break. However they still created chances with Rider heading wide from a Fulianty free kick and Routs set up Clarke with a defence splitting pass but Green saved at his feet. A solo effort by Rider saw him leave three players in his wake but his effort passed the wrong side of a post and

1

the introduction of three home substitutes seemed to spur Huntingdon. A free kick by Aaron Hiscock tested visiting keeper Joe Burberry and then an injury to Brad Brown forced a St Neots substitution and a change of tactics. St Neots now were clearly happy to defend their narrow lead and despite Huntingdon enjoying the greater share of possession they never really tested the visiting goalkeeper. In a hectic last few minutes and seven minutes added time the only real chance for Huntingdon came when two substitutes combined and an Owen Mullee cross was headed wide by Ricardo Green. St Neots: Burberry, Olive, Leagas, O’Hara, Dunnett, Fulianty, Joseph, Brown (B), Rider, Routs, Clarke Subs used: Goodridge, Wood and Rowland. Card: Goodridge (Y – 90+5mins) Referee: Laurie Parnham (John Walker)

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION ST NEOTS TOWN U18 This match was dubbed as the title showdown with the only two clubs still in the running meeting at St Neots. In the end it was a fairly comfortable victory for the home side as suggested by the score line, and they now need just three points from their two final games to win a third consecutive Cambridge Division title. They could therefore clinch the title next Monday when Royston are the final visiting team this season. However those facts assume that to deny St Neots the title, Haverhill would ned to win their final six matches in the span of the next six weeks and on this showing that looks doubtful. Two goals late in the first half set St Neots on their way but Haverhill had looked dangerous on the break cancelling out St Neots’ advantage of possession. As the visitors tired after the break St Neots rammed home their superiority. Playing an attacking 3-4-3 formation St Neots began full of confidence and in the opening three minutes carved out as many goal attempts. Haverhill replied with Jake Mingay bringing an important

save from home keeper Joe Burberry and after visiting keeper Thomas Hogg had saved well from Sam Routs and Markel Cousins, the game settled with St Neots dominating. After 31 minutes after a great run by Cousins, Reif Clarke netted but was ruled offside but St Neots persevered and after 36 minutes the impressive Markel Cousins jinked past defenders to open the scoring. Five minutes later more slick footwork saw Reif Clark leave his marker standing as he cut in to add a second goal. The best Haverhill could offer was a Cohen Micklewright free kick comfortably saved. Micklewright volleyed wide immediately upon the restart but St Neots then added a significant third goal after 56 minutes as the irrepressible Cousins beat three players before scoring from a narrow angle for his second goal. Clarke then saw an acrobatic header rebound from the cross bar after great work by Routs and then after 68 minutes a Routs free kick was spilled by the keeper and Clarke knocked in the rebound to make it 4-0. The fifth goal came from ace

marksman Joe Rider – his 28th of the season eight minutes from time and the only blot on the victory was an 85th minute fracas following a bad tackle and, in that incident, visiting defender Tafun Yagir was sent off and three players were booked. However St Neots had the last word when substitute Bradley Brown beat the keeper but saw his shot rebound from the foot of a post. St Neots: Burberry, Olive, Leagas, Fulianty, Goodridge, Dunnett, Clarke, O’Hara, Rider, Routs, Cousins Subs used: Brown, Wood, Muse and Rowland. Cards: Fulianty (Y – 85 mins), Brown (Y – 85 mins) Referee: Emma Hunt (John Walker)

A GROUP of people each paying £49 to own a Non-League football club and make every decision? For now, you’ll have to file the majority of us under sceptical. Among the promises on the OWNAFC website, once the decision of which club to takeover has been voted on, subscribers can expect to: Make new signings, hire and fire staff, negotiate contracts, set admission prices, full financial control, select the squad, plan training sessions and make history. Owners will call the shots via an app on their mobile phones. The NLP understands Northern Premier League Premier Division club Hednesford Town – who are up for sale and debt free – are the target with OWNAFC founder Stuart Harvey having already attended games and met officials. In an interview with BBC Sport, Harvey explains his vision of allowing people to live out their dream of owning a football club and taking the game back to the people. “It replaces the boardroom nonsense we see at many clubs with the people that matter,” he says. There’s nothing wrong with that and a glance across English football’s landscape shows there is a lot to be desired when it comes to some of the ownership of clubs in this county. The eagle-eyed will point out that an online community taking on a team is essentially an updated version of MyFootballClub, who took over Ebbsfleet United in 2008. Again the promise was the chance to live out the real life version of Football Manager. Membership numbers topped 27,000, initially it saved Fleet and there was an FA Trophy win at Wembley. But, with no vote on the actual picking of Liam Daish’s team – the big selling point – and perhaps the lack of a star name club, renewals dwindled. Eventually the Kent club were running on empty, bargaining with clubs who had sell-on fees with players, like Stevenage with Michael Bostwick, to bring in quick revenue before they eventually dropped out of Non-League’s top flight in 2013 on the brink of non-existence before being taken over again. Harvey says it is, “… giving people a second club to grow to love – for the football fan who is out priced in the modern game.” If it is Hednesford, what about their fans? Suddenly the big decisions, all the decisions, are being decided by a majority vote by people who have probably never heard of the Pitmen, despite their illustrious NonLeague past. How much they pay to watch their team, who signs, who doesn’t, and, potentially, who plays can be signed off at the click of a button by somebody on the other side of the world waiting in the queue at McDonalds for a burger. While those who follow football from the top, where anything outside of the Manchester Uniteds, Liverpools, Real Madrids and Barcelonas barely exists, Non-League football maybe does seem a bit inconsequential and somehow less important. But it matters. These clubs are part of people’s lives. Football at this level isn’t a joke. They may be fewer in numbers, but to supporters those three points on a Saturday mean just as much in the Evo-Stik Premier as they do in the Premier League. For players, what happens on and off the pitch can impact the rest of their career. It’s a responsibility that will hopefully be impressed on any owners should it go through. Running a football club through a mobile phone isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. There are rules and regulations to be adhered to and if it goes the same way as MyFC, what’s to hold the interest long-term. Any takeover will have to be passed off by the authorities and you’d hope robust questions are asked and business plans are poured over. A football club as a plaything will make many people uncomfortable. Maybe it will work and others will follow. As the headline on OWNAFC’s website asks, ‘Do you have what it takes to run a real football club?’ Time will certainly tell.
