Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of
the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Banbury United Football Club and we home your brief stay with us is an enjoyable one before a safe trip home later this evening. Tuesday saw us entertain playoff chasing Coalville Town and unfortunately, we ended up losing the match 4-1. On the plus side, it was great to have both Ryan Hughes and Scott Pollock (who came through 45 minutes) back in the fold and also new signing Ben Bradley, who signed from Haverhill Rovers earlier in the week, replacing Scott at half time, so please join me in welcoming Ben to the Club and we hope your time with us is both rewarding and enjoyable. Today should also see the return of Dan Trendall, who has missed the last two games due to a pre-arranged trip away before signing for ourselves. Don’t forget that next Friday ( 5th April) our Under 18 side are looking to secure a league and County Cup double when they face St Ives Town Under 18’s in the Huntingdonshire Football Association Under 18 County Cup Final at Eynesbury Rovers FC – kick off – 7.45pm. It would be absolutely brilliant to see a good turnout from our supporters to cheer the youngsters on as they have been fantastic this year, winning their league title for a third consecutive season and of course, many making appearances for the First Team in recent weeks.
Back to get very much 100%
today’s game and as always, I ask you guys to please behind the lads. Your support is very important and is appreciated by the team and in return, they will give effort and commitment.
PUMP UP THE VOLUME
Gaffer’s Notes… With Manager Today we welcome Banbury FC to the Premier Plus Stadium- currently sitting in 17th place, we hope that all off the supporters, club officials present today enjoy their time at the game today.
Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Scott Pollock and Ryan Hughes on their fantastic news on gaining a professional contract at Northampton Town. Both players are really grounded, have an excellent desire to improve their games and since their time with St Neots have also added some extra detail to their games with the physicality of the league. Matt Clements has a strong, trusted relationship with The Cobblers and we look forward to continuing their trust with the young players they look to offer senior football too. Moving onto Tuesday night’s game versus Coalville Town, we felt they were the better team on the night. They played with a real purpose and style which I’m sure will get them into the playoffs. Once again there was a great deal of learning made by our players on the night something that will help their Journeys and development in the longer term. I felt Stevan Shaw was outstanding once again and he is maturing as a player week by week, likewise Matty Miles, who is enjoying the responsibility of leading the team and is another player who has been outstanding game after game...I could go on with many other players. The game itself was a disappointment in terms of goals conceded and the timings of them, they were at key moments in the game which really flipped the game on its head. We gathered some momentum for a period of 25mins - with directness, forward running and looking to regain the ball as high up the pitch as possible. Credit to Coalville who have a strong winning mentality in their group and we wish them well.
Today we host Banbury United, a team who will be looking to win the fixture which would all but secure their step 3 status. On the other hand, we understand how important today’s game is for our young group. We have a full squad to choose from which is a positive and we are confident the players can deliver! We hope fantastic them on
you all enjoy the game this afternoon and continue your support you have all shown to the players. Please drive with your support!
OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
BANBURY UNITED FC Joined League: 1931 Chairman: Phil Lines Website: www.banburyunitedfc.co.UK Banbury United’s genesis is to be found in Spencer Villa, a works club formed in 1931. Friendly matches were played on a ground on the town’s Middleton Road. The club joined the Banbury Junior League for the 1933-34 season and won the championship at their first attempt. They changed their name to Banbury Spencer in 1934 and moved to their current ground for the start of the 1934-35 season in which they competed in the Oxfordshire Senior League. This too they won at their first attempt. During the season they were elected to the Birmingham Combination for the start of the 1935-36 season. After the war, Banbury resumed in the Birmingham Combination and turned professional for the 1946-47 season. In 1947-48, with attendances averaging 3,500, they finished runners-up in the league and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 2-1 at Colchester United, at that time a Southern League club. The next season the ground attendance record was broken when 7,160 turned up to see Banbury lose to Oxford City in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. The same season also saw Banbury reach the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup, losing 2-1 to Nuneaton Borough. Banbury’s manager at this time was Jimmy Cringan, who had joined them in 1936 and was to remain ‘The Boss’ for no less than 25 years until his retirement in 1961. The status of the Birmingham Combination began to decline in the early 1950s. At the end of the 195354 season the league disbanded and, along with most of its remaining clubs, Banbury joined the Birmingham League. In 1959-60 they reached the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup for the second time, again losing to Nuneaton, this time 1-0. In 1961-62, Banbury reached the first round of the FA Cup for the second time, travelling to Third
Division Shrewsbury Town and losing 7-1. The Birmingham League continued to expand and became the West Midlands League in 1962. This coincided with the effective independence of the football club, the Spencer company having all but ended its association. The club name remained unchanged, however, until April 1965 when, with the club’s finances suffering – attendances had fallen to a historical low – a group of local businessmen bought the club. Banbury Spencer became Banbury United. The new owners were ambitious and were looking to a higher grade of football. Former Chelsea, West Ham, Arsenal and England player Len Goulden was installed as manager. During the summer of 1966 Banbury were elected to the Southern League. Significant improvements were made to the ground. Floodlights were installed and the famous old railway coaches that had been used as changing rooms were removed and replaced by a new clubhouse. United then embarked on an unbroken 24-season run as members of the Southern League. They came close to league honours in 1967-68 when they finished in seventh place in the First Division, just two points and three places behind Rugby Town who were promoted to the Premier Division. The first round of the FA Cup was reached twice more; in 1972-73, United lost 2-0 at home to Barnet, then a Southern League club, and the following season, after a 0-0 draw at home, they lost 3-2 away to Fourth Division Northampton Town in a replay. United twice reached the last sixteen of the FA Trophy, losing 1-0 in a replay to Hereford United in 1970-71 and, in 1973 74, by the same score in a second replay to eventual Southern League champions Dartford. From the late 1970s United’s fortunes declined sharply as debts mounted.
The ownership of the ground was given up as security against the club’s debts. On the field the team was also struggling, finishing in the top half of the table just twice in twelve seasons after 1978. In 1990, United finished 21st of 22 and were relegated for the first time in their history, starting season 1990-91 in the Hellenic League. Those fans who expected a quick return to the Southern League were to be disappointed. Only in 1993-94, when they finished third, did United make look like making a serious promotion challenge. However, from 1997 onwards a revived and expanded committee brought about such an improvement in financial circumstances that the club was ready to aim for promotion. Former Oxford, Newcastle and QPR player Kevin Brock was appointed first team manager for the 1999-2000 campaign. United’s form up to Christmas of 1999 was good but they entered the New Year no fewer than nineteen points behind leaders Highworth Town. In only eight weeks they overhauled their rivals with a run of 13 consecutive victories and remained unbeaten for the rest of the season. A 3-1 victory at Wantage Town clinched the Hellenic League championship with two games remaining and Banbury United were back in the Southern League. United took a couple of seasons to find their feet in the Eastern division, finishing 13th and 15th. Eighth place in 2003 was their best in the Southern League in 25 years. That was equalled the following season, enough to qualify for a play-off for a place in a reformed Premier division in the restructured non-League pyramid. Banbury beat Sutton Coldfield Town of the Western division, coming from behind to win in stoppage time in extra-time.
A difficult first season in the Premier division (2004-05) was followed by a much better second. Seventh place in season 2005-06 was an improvement of ten places (United spent nine weeks in the play-off places) but thirteenth in 2006-07 was a big disappointment. However, it was troubles off the field that made the headlines. Club accounts showed a large deficit and big cuts were made to the playing budget. Shortly after the season ended, manager Kevin Brock resigned, citing the cuts as his reason for leaving after eight years. His departure was the first of six changes of manager in the next eight years as United went into another decline. Relegation was avoided in 2009 as the annual bout of resignations and demotions elsewhere in the Pyramid resulted in a reprieve. In 2012 a lastday victory ensured safety. Season 2013-14 began well enough – United were eighth in the table in early February – but more drastic budget cuts were applied. Another player exodus resulted; there followed the most embarrassing run of defeats in the club’s history as the team plummeted to 19th, conceding 43 goals in nine games. The dismal form continued into the 2014-15 season and the inevitable occurred. After 11 years in the Premier division level the club was relegated for only the second time in its history and was placed in the South & West division for the 2015-16 season. Change, however, was on its way. For a year fans had been discreetly working on a takeover. Advised by Supporters Direct, the umbrella organisation for supporters trusts, the supporters club launched its bid towards the end of the season. Agreement was reached with the existing board and a joint committee ran the club during the spring and summer until the takeover was formally completed in the first week of the new season, four months after the 50th anniversary of Spencer becoming United. In May that committee had appointed a new team manager, exOxford United player and Brackley Town and Oxford City manager Mike Ford. He had to assemble a new squad from scratch. Early form was moderate with only four wins from the first 12 games but the team hit form to win 24 of the next 30 and finish runners-up to Cinderford. A nervy victory in the play-off semifinal against Winchester set up a
final showdown with third-placed Taunton. In front of more than 1,200 spectators, the club’s biggest attendance for more than 21 years, United won 2-0 to regain their place in the Premier Division at the first attempt, a remarkable achievement for a club that had been on its knees a year earlier. Those supporters who had thought that after relegation and the takeover a season of consolidation was a realistic target saw their expectations exceeded but even the most optimistic followers might not have anticipated that upon their return to the Premier Division United would enter the last month of season 2016/17 challenging for a place in the play-offs. Only over the Easter weekend did their hopes disappear but a final position of sixth was the club’s best in the post-2004 Pyramid. This was followed by a ninth place finish last season.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
St Neots Town This victory left ambitious Coalville Town just a point outside the play-offs and it avenged an earlier meeting with St Neots when they were dumped out of the FA Cup in a penalty shoot-out. It may have been the fourth meeting of the two sides this season (including the FA Cup replay) but the visitors will have learned little in advance about their opponents for St Neots skipper Matt Miles was the only survivor from the last meeting of the two sides. The home side probably played as well as they had in their previous match against champions elect Kettering Town despite the final score not reflecting this, but the winners created few scoring openings yet managed to convert four of them! It was once again a penalty conceded in the opening quarter of an hour that left the home side with a mountain to climb, but this time unlike in the previous match, the penalty decision was much more contentious. It came after 12 minutes when central defender Owen Dunnett appeared to win the ball with a decisive challenge, but his opponent tumbled, and the Referee pointed to the spot on his Assistant’s advice. From that point on St Neots were chasing the game despite their side being strengthened from their previous match with Scott Pollock and Gary Wharton returning after injury and loanee Ryan Hughes returning from his Football League debut with Northampton Town. Also, back in the side was Prince Mutswunguma with Mason Rhiney, Joe Rider and Reif Clarke on the substitutes bench. After a quiet opening the penalty award after 12 minutes was the first notable incident. Andrew Wright confidently tucked away his spot kick to boost the visitors and a minute later
1
Coalville Town
Scott McManus could have increased the lead, but he shot wastefully over the bar. For the next twenty minutes there was little action in either penalty area but a poor clearance by visiting keeper Richard Walton was seized upon by Scott Pollock whose chip drifted just over the cross bar. With much of the play in midfield there was an effective stalemate as neither side were able to dominate but the reorganised home back four seemed to be growing in confidence. Another opening for the visitors saw McManus fire high over the bar after the St Neots defence had failed to clear and then a lengthy free kick three minutes before the break by Ryan Hughes was comfortable gathered by Walton. A disappointing first half ended with Tom McGlinchey winning his way to the bye line but as he widened his shooting angle his shot flew across the face of goal. Pollock, still feeling his injury, failed to reappear after the interval giving recent signing Ben Bradley the opportunity for his debut in midfield for St Neots. However, before any significant counter attack could be mustered by the home side, two goals in three minutes effectively ended the contest. Five minutes after the restart Coalville won a free kick and Wright’s floated cross was headed in at the far post by defender Kieran Fenton and three minutes later St Neots were floored by a very unfortunate goal. Another free kick by Wright was deflected up into the air by a defender, wrongfooting his colleagues and it fell invitingly for Tim Berridge to poke home from just a couple of yards. St Neots retaliated with a series of attacking moves and a Hughes free kick was deflected for a corner taken by Matt Miles. His inswinging
4
kick was totally misjudged by visiting keeper Richard Walton who called for the ball but off balance, could only punch it into his own net. If that was the boost St Neots desired it did not materialise. Their efforts failed to significantly test the visiting defence whilst at the other end James Philip made an excellent save to deny McGlinchey. Eight minutes from time Joe Doyle-Charles won a corner for the visitors but suffered an accidental neck injury that saw an eight minutes delay in play whilst he was treated on pitch before being stretchered off. However, in the added time substitute Kairo Mitchell took advantage of slack marking to complete the scoring. St Neots: Philip, Hood, Hughes, Miles, Dunnett, Shaw, Sutton, Pollock, Wharton, Mutswunguma, Norville-Williams Subs: Bradley (for Pollock 46 mins), Rider(for Mutswunguma 74 mins), Rhiney and Clarke. I recently caught up with Stockport County’s Jim Gannon to discuss his side’s superb run of form of late. League affairs and the Hatters’ outstanding run of late had to be discussed; the small matter of an unbeaten 16-game charge that had seen Gannon’s side march from mid-table to the summit of National North before last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Brackley Town (that was always going to happen once I chose to write this column on how ‘great’ they have been). But putting last Saturday’s result aside against another side who have hit form at the right time, winning often becomes a habit. In County’s case, Gannon claimed there was a combination of factors: the club, which is still part-time, has added an extra day of training to get the very best out of the squad; they have been fortunate with injuries; and the players brought in have gelled quickly. Meanwhile, old-fashioned hard work has been the garnish to these chief ingredients. But while the Hatters punch away at the top of one table, it is another which they are rooted to the foot of that may well have had the most positive bearing on their season as they prop up the rest in the disciplinary charts. Before last weekend, Gannon’s side had received just 33 yellow cards with only one dismissal from their 33 games. And this is no one-off; last year Stockport were awarded this newspaper’s award for Fair Play, and Gannon spoke then of the need to maintain standards on the pitch because eventually it will have a positive effect. They didn’t receive one red card last season, an astonishing achievement in a league as fullblooded as the National North. Of course, the good behaviour doesn’t always reap rewards; table-topping Chorley are working towards mediocrity when it comes to their disciplinary record this season. But Stockport, along with the side that beat them on Saturday, Brackley, are streets ahead when it comes to keeping players away from the headmaster’s office. We all love a good tackle and the blood and thunder of this game, but the days of Billy Bremner kicking players for fun are long gone. Good behaviour brings its rewards, and there is something to be said for clubs that leave a lasting and positive mark on you, rather than on opposing players.
