Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s Emirates FA Challenge Cup First Round Qualifying tie.

This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of BIGGLESWADE TOWN FC and we hope your brief stay with us here is an enjoyable one before hopping the county border back into Bedfordshire later this evening.

What a difference a couple of days can make in football. Tuesday evening saw us back performing how we’ve come to expect with a high tempo and pressing the opposition and we benefitted from what we put into the game versus Godmanchester Rovers. It was a decent all round team performance with everyone doing their bit for the cause starting with PHILPSY making a handful of good stops at one end and of course, PRINCE doing the business at the other end , popping in all three goals with some great finishing.

It was a good week in National Competitions with our Under 18’s progressing to the First Round

Qualifying with a convincing 4-0 win over Barton Rovers here at the Premier Plus Stadium. Goals on the night came from JACOB JOSEPH (who came on as a substitute for the Senior side in the FA Cup the previous evening), ADRIAN O’HARA, JAKE WOOD and REIF CLARKE (who has scored in every game so far this season). Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing who we get in the next round.

Off the pitch we have again been victims of some serious acts of vandalism inside the stadium with broken bottles being thrown onto the pitch, a large metal pole thrown over the perimeter fence again onto the pitch, this time whilst people were on there prior to kick off and the latest incident was the destruction of one of the picnic benches on Wednesday night. THIS HAS TO STOP !!!! Please, if anyone knows the identity of the culprits, then do get in touch with us at the club and we can hopefully put an end to this shameful behaviour. Right then, back to today’s game, one in which we can approach as underdogs

and with no fear as we have nothing to lose so please get behind the boys from the off, you know you can make a difference and then head into the bar afterwards to watch the England game and take some well deserved refreshment.

Until next time…

A HURRIED WELCOME TO OUT NEAR NEIGHBOURS FOR THIS FA CUP TIE FOLLOWING OUR MIDWEEK REPLAY SUCCESS

This season the Waders have had an inconsistent start and are in the bottom seven of the table:

A very special welcome to our visitors this evening who are the players, officials and supporters of near neighbours Biggleswade Town. The Waders have been in the Premier Division of the Southern League for five seasons after winning their way up to Step Three at the end of the 2012/13 season via the play offs. They won promotion the hard way with two away victories and have finished 9th, 19th, 14th, 7th and 16th in the top-flight since that promotion. Our older supporters may remember us crossing swords with Biggleswade Town in the United Counties League back in the 1970’s but over the years we have met countless times in Cup competitions including the FA Cup, the FA Trophy, the East Anglian Cup and of course the Hinchingbrooke Cup plus of course twelve recent meetings at Step Three.

In the Southern League Central Division 2011/12 season St Neots 1-2 Biggleswade & Biggleswade 1-3 St Neots Club History 1874 - 1954 - the First 80 Years Biggleswade Town were originally formed as Biggleswade F.C. in 1874 and began by playing friendlies. They became one of the founder members of the Biggleswade and District League in 1902/03 and won the championship at the first attempt. The successful season was climaxed by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup - the first of eight victories so far in the competition. The ‘Waders’, as the club are known, first entered the FA Cup in 1904. 2008 - Chris Nunn became manager in Nov 06 after a very poor start to the season saw the team heading for certain relegation. In Feb 07 the team had made up a lot of points but were still bottom of the Premier table. The team avoided relegation on the last league day of the season. The winning of

the NBC Cup in the very last match of the campaign reinforced that optimism. The 2007/08 season saw the squad develop further with new signings and for the first time in 15 years the club found itself top of the division at one point. A final position of 3rd was a result of hard work and changes gradually moving the club forward. As the 2008/09 season beckoned, the new Stadium was ready for occupation and the seasons in the ‘wilderness of ground sharing’ were over. For the first time in the clubs 134year history, it finally had a home of its very own. 2008 – 2009 - Moving into the new ground certainly created a great feeling at the Club and new faces began to appear on the playing side as well as behind the scenes. As the final whistle blew on the last friendly there was a definite feeling of readiness for the forthcoming season. The Wader’s first season (2009-10) at Step Four proved a tough start but gradually the team strengthened and finished in a comfortable twelfth place with the team taking points off every side that season except Bury Town and Hitchin Town who finished first and second respectively. 2010-2011 - This season saw the Waders climb to their highest ever position in the football pyramid, finally finishing in 4th place and

with the resultant position in the playoffs. Waders travelled to 3rd place Daventry Town, a team they had previously beaten both home and away in the regular season. Football being football, Daventry ran out easy winners ending Waders hopes of promotion. 2011-2012 - This season saw the Waders fade as season progressed. Having topped the league early in the season, injuries and suspensions took its toll and the season finished with a top half finish just outside the play offs. 2012-2013 - Winning the 2012/13 Playoff final secured a place in the Southern League Premier, was upstaged by the best ever season in the club’s 140-year history, finishing 9th in our first Premier season, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to a well organised Stourbridge side. Season ended with Waders beating Luton Town at Luton to lift the County Cup. 2013-2014 - First season ever at step three and the Waders feel they have arrived. Finishing a creditable 9th in the table and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in the club’s history put the club in the record books. The Waders were the draw specialist of the premier division and had they converted the drawn games to winning ones, they would have finished in the play-off

positions. Winning the Beds Senior Cup for the second successive season was the icing on the cake. 2014-2015 - This season was a real test for the Waders, with injuries both on and off the field. Long term injuries meant bringing in loan players and they all played their part. 2015-2016 - A difficult season for the Waders, Southern League gets harder every season, an injection of new players helped steer the ship. 2016-2017 - Having established their premier status the Waders went on to achieve their highest points total and finished just outside the play-offs in a creditable 7th position 2017-2018 - Tough season with the club suffering a number of significant injuries ended with a Mid Table finish and a narrow loss to Luton Town in the Beds Senior Cup Final. 2018-2019 - A successful first season for new manager Lee Allinson and his new squad. Winners of the Beds senior cup. 7th in the Southern league central premier division, narrowly missing a play-off place. Reached the 2nd round qualifying of the FA trophy only just beaten 1-0 away to conference side AFC Fylde.

The demise of Bury should be the turning point for football regulation across all levels in the country. On Monday (September 2) The Football Supporters’ Association met with the Alliance Committee – the National League, Northern Premier League, Southern League and Isthmian League - to put forward proposals on how to protect football clubs. The FSA’s proposals – which they believe should apply to all levels of football including Steps 1-4 in Non-League – have two key principles: the community significance of football clubs and avoiding conflicts of interest in regulation. The FSA believes The Football Association should be the overall regulatory body following the failure of clubs selfregulating under their respective leagues. It would eradicate conflicts of interest in the way that rules and regulations are set and administered by the leagues, and especially where some of the decisions on the conduct of owners and directors of clubs are taken by the owners and directors of other clubs. “We will be emphasising the need for reform of the regulations around ownership of clubs because we want to protect clubs and protect football’s assets from speculators and chancers coming into the game,” Andy Walsh of the FSA told The NLP in the wake of Bury’s expulsion from the EFL. “Football clubs in this country still represent the biggest expression of community identity of any organisation in towns and cities up and down the land. “Some football clubs sit on very healthy assets, pieces of land that their ground has been built on and have been in the club’s ownership for generations. That is quite an attraction to some speculators. Those assets deserve some protection. The FA can provide that. The FA would deter speculators and chancers from taking over our football clubs. “You can’t expect clubs to regulate themselves. You need some independence in the regulation. We believe the most appropriate regulator is The FA. “The leagues are privately owned entities owned by the football clubs themselves and they are going to be less likely to vote for stronger regulation. “Self-regulation in the EFL has been shown to have failed and it’s now time for The FA to step in and apply that regulatory structure. “If The FA doesn’t step in then it should be government because football clubs are not just like any other businesses, they are cultural and community assets in their local towns and cities and therefore they deserve a greater level of protection.” The FSA are also calling for the Owners’ and Directors’ Test to be strengthened with a more stringent process put in place. “The provisions within the Owners’ and Directors’ Test we believe to be inadequate,” said Walsh, referencing the ownership of Steve Dale at Bury and Bolton’s Ken Anderson. “Those tests clearly need to be strengthened. “We also believe there should be greater scrutiny of spending at football clubs to ensure they are being run in a sustainable manner. “Stewart Day, who owned Bury before he sold to Steve Dale, racked up millions of pounds worth of debts incurred because of over spending. No action was taken by the Football League or The FA. “There needs to be a review of the finances in the game. We would argue there needs to be a fairer distribution of wealth but that should be done within a regulatory framework because we equally do not want to see owners such as the Oystons, who took advantage of their stewardship of Blackpool to enrich themselves. One thing is for certain, we cannot stand still.”

FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND REPLAY St Neots Town Prince Mutswunguma produced a performance ‘fit for a King’ as his well taken hat trick propelled his side through to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and earned his club a financial reward of £2,890. Recent form was forgotten as Godmanchester came into the match on the back of three consecutive league victories whilst St Neots had been crushed 5-1 at home just three days earlier. It was a much better match that the original encounter full of end-to-end football and a huge commitment by both sides. The difference in the final analysis was the finishing because for long periods possession was shared but the visitors’ attempts on goal were few and far between although it has to be noted that both goalkeepers made important saves. St Neots made just one team change with Mutswunguma replacing Mason Rhiney who was on the bench whilst Godmanchester were without unavailable leading scorer James Hall. The match got off to a lively start and three goals in seven minutes in an early first half spell kept the crowd well entertained. The visitors had two early off target attempts on goal with Micky Hyem firing well over and Charlie Bowen heading a lengthy Chris Hyem throw wide of target. The feast of goals started after twelve minutes when a poor defensive clearance fell to Prince Mutswunguma 25 yards from goal and his perfectly placed shot just under the bar left goalkeeper Niall Conroy rooted to the spot. The visitors hit straight back with Austin Diaper miskicking in front of goal after neat play by Micky Hyem but five minutes after the opening goal the scores were levelled as

3

Godmanchester Rovers

a rare fumble by James Philp saw the ball go loose and Jack Chandler forced it home from close range. However, parity only lasted ninety seconds and then Mutswunguma made his mark again with a delightful chip over the goalkeeper. That seemed to deflate the visitors’ confidence and it was St Neots who went on to create further chances as the hardworking Alfie Connor skimmed the crossbar after neat work by Lee Watkins and then the same home player brought an important save from Conroy. The first half ended at the other end with Philp spreading himself to push away a low effort by Diaper. St Neots went on the offensive after the break and Charlie Bowen found his way into the Referee’s notebook for a late challenge on Jake Noble. A Connor free kick then tested Conroy, but he pushed the shot for a corner which was successfully defended. Tim N’Kala was testing the visiting defence with some pacey runs down the flanks but Godmanchester will rue an excellent chance to level the scores after 66 minutes when skipper Micky Hyem went clear, but James Philp left his line to narrow the shooting angle and save with his feet. However, this was an isolated threat to the home defence whilst at the other end Sam Bennett fed Mutswunguma and only a fine save by Conroy delayed his hat-trick. A corner from Jack Chandler stretched Philp but after 72 minutes another St Neots goal effectively settled the outcome. Once again it was Mutswunguma who was the scourge of the visiting defence as following a lengthy throw from Aaron Smith the defence failed to clear and the hat trick

1

was completed. At that point Godmanchester sent on Harry McGregor and tried to adopt a more attacking approach but the St Neots back line looked confident and secure. It could even have been better for St Neots had Conroy not produced the save of the match to turn a Jake Kerins dipping shot over his cross bar and then Sam Bennett broke clear of the defence but shot across the face of goal. Even a late booking for Alfie Connor failed to dim the gloss on this satisfactory performance and result. St Neots now have three days to prepare for the visit of Step Three Biggleswade Town in the next round.
