Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium
for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Barton Rovers FC and we hope your brief visit to St Neots is an enjoyable one before a safe journey home later this evening.
I’ve come to the conclusion that football can be a somewhat cruel and unforgiving game at times. Our last home game saw us outplay league leaders AFC Dunstable yet we ended up on the wrong end of a 5-2 defeat with PRINCE MUTSWUNGUMA and SAM BENNETT our scorers.
Saturday saw us go behind at Carlton Town in the FA Trophy to a free header from a
free kick a the same player then doubled his side’s lead with a carbon copy from a corner. We then got ourselves back in the contest as SAM GOODE bundled home and we then enjoyed a prolonged period of pressure on the home side where we almost nicked an equaliser but then succumbed to a break away sucker punch and conceded a needless penalty to book the home sides passage into the next round. The story of both games – individual mistakes and not taking good chances are preventing us from getting positive results but hopefully we are taking these points on board and learning from them and the return of experienced players Ben Bradley, Jacob Noble and Sam Gomarsall can only help the lads.
Tuesday saw us put in what has been described as our best performance of the season so far as we faced Yaxley on their 3G pitch in the Southern League Challenge Cup and it was a story of goals at the ends of both halves. Hot on the heels of making his first appearance of the season on Saturday, BEN BRADLEY nudged us in front just prior to the break and the host then levelled a minute into the second half and stole the win with a 92nd minute winner. Again, another cruel ending to a game in which we had performed very well.
Please keep the faith and cheer the boys on. Your support has
been absolutely superb as ever and please rest assured, everything is being done to try and arrest our recent run of decent performances but no reward for our efforts.
Until next time…
From The Dugout… With Manager
Today we welcome Barton Rovers FC to the Premier Plus Stadium. We hope all off
the supporters, club officials present to watch the match enjoy their visit. Reflecting on the previous few games, starting with the visit to Carlton Town in the FA Trophy - we were well aware of their start to the season, being mindful of their dynamic CF’s. We were disappointed that it took us to go 2 goals down to really step into the game and gather some momentum. One thing for sure though is that our away support was fantastic and we thank you all for travelling up to support us. We then travelled up to Yaxley in the Southern League Cup - we had some positive individual performances, in particular the return of Ben Bradley who scored and played an important role within the 1st half. A disappointment to concede at the moments we did Tuesday night, we are working really hard with the players to ensure we can learn from these quickly. I honestly believe that we are not far off being a much more consistent side. Once we add that consistency we have all the tools to be a competitive side. On the injury front, it will only be Jacob Joseph who won’t feature as recovers from a broken metatarsal sustained in the U18s Fixture. On the behalf of the 1st team he will be fully missed both on and off the pitch as he’s a great lad to have around and we all wish JJ a speedy recovery. We hope to see as many supporters at the game Saturday - continuing the fantastic support from last week and beyond. Trust me, the players appreciate every bit of positive support given to them... so please continue to back them! A special mention to the committee members & the Cheese & Wine society who have spent the last few games travelling up and down the country to support the club and our players, superb guys………

Welcome Especially To Our Visitors Barton Rovers For Our First Meeting Since 2Nd January 2012. Although situated just 25 miles away we have only met Barton Rovers on the pitch five times in competitive football in the last sixty years or so according to my records. Out last meeting here in St Neots was on 2nd January 2012 – a New Years’ Bank Holiday meeting in the Southern League Central Division. For those with long memories this was our first ever season at Step Four of the National League system following our promotion from the United Counties League the previous season. It was a cracking match – report later in programme if space permits – finishing in a 5-3 victory for the home side. That completed a league double because on the August Bank Holiday Monday that season we had won a narrow 1-0 victory over our visitors. Interesting to note that the
attendance that day was 438 – we should be glad for a repeat of that!! Barton are fairly recent newcomers to the Southern League having spent many years in the Isthmian part of the non-league pyramid but transferred across the year before we won promotion to that level. Our previous meetings were either in the Hinchingbrooke Cup (twice) or the East Anglian Cup (once) and all three of those meetings afforded St Neots home advantage resulting in two wins and one defeat for our lads. At present Barton sit in ninth place in the table seven points ahead of our lads but we hope to reduce that gap this afternoon. Barton are also comfortably through to the next round of the FA Trophy having defeated Hullbridge Sports 4-2 away from home last Saturday. PREVIOUS MEETINGS OF OUR CLUBS 1998/99 St Neots 1-1 Barton Rovers (East
Anglian Cup Round Three St Neots won 5-4 on pens) 2003/04 St Neots 3-0 Barton Rovers (Hinchingbrooke Cup Round One) 2005/06 St Neots 2-3 Barton Rovers (Hinchingbrooke Cup Round Two) 2011/12 St Neots 1-0 Barton Rovers & Barton Rovers 3-5 St Neots (southern league)

Club History Barton Rovers have their home in Barton-le-Clay, a village of some 5000 people just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter-village football for the first 50 years until 1946 when they reformed and joined the Luton & District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League. They enjoyed only
limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964-65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep in their final season - the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy - the only time this has been achieved to date. In 1976 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time and went to the quarterfinals before losing to Farnborough Town. The following year it was one step better with a Semi-final appearance against Sheffield. 1978 saw the pinnacle reached with a crowd of 16,391 watching the FA Vase Final at Wembley where Barton Rovers lost 1-2 to Blue Star of Newcastle. In 1979 The Rovers gained election to the then Isthmian League. In their first season they finished a credible 8th. In 1980-81 this was improved to fourth and the same position was repeated in 1981-82. At the end of the 1982-83 season Barry Reed retired
having achieved the clubs highest position of 3rd. He had also fulfilled his greatest wish - to see Barton Rovers play in the First Round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when the Rovers lost 0-2 to Torquay United at Plainmoor. The club had to settle for mid-table obscurity as three managers guided the Rovers through a transitional period in the mid 80’s. In season 1990/91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two, for Manager Mick Huckle that was his final game in charge after five years, as he retired to step up to General Manager. After an unspectacular 1991/192 season with firstly Ray Brandon and then Tony Dumigan in charge a new man was appointed in May 1992 he was Brian Williams who had been one of the most successful non-league managers in the area. Unfortunately his success was limited to cup competitions with the Rovers having their best FA Vase run for seven years, eventually falling to, Wembley finalists Tiverton Town from the Great Mills Western League in the 4th Round. The semi-final of the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also reached but the most notable success came in the Isthmian
Associate Members Trophy where the Rovers reached the final of an Isthmian League competition for the first time in their history. Despite a 3-1 extra-time defeat against Northwood it was an achievement that lit up the reins, retaining Gordon Brown as his coach. Together these two steered the Rovers clear of the relegation threat that had hung over the club all season, securing their Division Two status in the penultimate league match with a 2-2 draw at Witham Town.

WE ALMOST had to check the calendar on Saturday night. Yes, it is 2019, but here we still are reporting on alleged incidents of racism in Non-League football. So often are we quick to jump on it when heard in other countries but time and again this horrible issue keeps rearing its head in England and Wales and it can’t be brushed off anymore. Last weekend, word quickly filtered through from Hartlepool United’s National League game with Dover Athletic. Dover striker Inih Effiong had scored a penalty and in the aftermath of the celebrations, something had sparked up between the players and a section of the home support. When Pools players also took severe exception, it was clear something very untoward had happened. Whites boss Andy Hessenthaler later said he considered taking his players off – a move that would have been backed by Hartlepool manager Craig Hignett – but they chose to play on. Sadly, it wasn’t the only reported incident of the week with other accusations made elsewhere. Hartlepool, to their credit, have been swift in response. They made an announcement at half-time of the game, have dedicated their programme front cover for their next home game with the Kick It Out message and have vowed to come down heavily on the culprit, who has also been arrested. I’ve written in the past about how it is a difficult subject to write about – and one that feels ever common – because I’ve not been the subject of racist abuse. I don’t know what that feels like to be vilified for the colour of my skin. But we must listen to the people who have. The people who know what it feels like to have someone spitting and snarling in your face or hidden by a keyboard and throwing out insults on social media. England star Raheem Sterling has been a fantastic advocate in recent times, speaking out against the injustices and asking society as a whole to look at itself in the mirror. Racism isn’t just a football problem but the game is a reflection of wider society. And it’s a game that has a platform to make a difference. It’s high time the authorities came down harder than ever when racist or homophobic behaviour is proven. There is no justification for it.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town For the third time this season St Neots let in five goals in a home league match – and that was after taking the lead in 40 seconds of the start and dominating the second half! Once again it was a tale of shoddy first half defending that left them chasing the game after the break at 4-1 behind, and although the improvement in the second half was significant, the deficit conceded in the first 45 minutes proved pivotal. AFC Dunstable came to town as league leaders with only one defeat in their six completed matches and it will be little comfort to St Neots to know that they were able to compete on level terms when they were not conceding sloppy goals. They must now take away the positives from the performance and improve their defending. To rub salt into the wounds the first two Dunstable goals came from former St Neots players and two more were set up by another former Saint. Prior to the match St Neots had the promising news that two of their senior players had recovered from injury to return to the side with Sam Goode and Jake Kerins returning for Panny Boxer and Jake Noble both of whom were on the bench. St Neots now look forward to their first free midweek of the season so their will have a little time to prepare for the FA Trophy debut this season, next week away in Nottinghamshire. Before all the later arriving spectators were in their seats, St Neots had taken the lead inside the first 40 seconds. A loose defensive clearance reached Sam Bennett on the left and his early probing cross was forced home from close range by Prince Mutswunguma – his fifth goal of the current campaign. However, the visitors took less than three minutes to respond as from their second corner of the match defender Ryan Frater (five goals in 79 appearance for St Neots) rose above the defence to head past James Philp and level the

AFC Dunstable
scores. St Neots seemed to be unaffected by this setback as Sam Goode headed narrowly wide from a St Neots corner and then Mutswunguma brought a good low save from visiting keeper Dan Green. Green then pushed two efforts over the bar from Bennett and Sam Gomersall but gradually the visitors were getting on top and for the final half hour of the first half they were in control. After 26 minutes they forged into the lead as Nathan Frater joined his brother on the scoresheet cutting in from the right to curl a shot beyond the despairing dive of Philp. Then in the five minutes before half time the St Neots defence endured a nightmare spell in which they conceded two further goals to effectively put the match beyond recovery. After 40 minutes the usually reliable Philp spilled a cross from former Saint Martell Powell presenting striker Bernard Christie with a simple tap in finish and four minutes later Referee Daniel Todd wrongly awarded the visitors a free kick when Sam Goode clearly won a tackle on Christie, and from the cross by Powell Luke Abraham got in front of his marker to head past Philp to make it 4-1. To their immense credit St Neots seemed to put the score line behind them after half time and they set about repairing the damage. Mutswunguma shot wide after good work by Joe Sutton and after 52 minutes Sam Bennett gave them faint hope of a recovery when he collected a short pass from Mutswunguma to move inside and curl a shot into the roof of the net. Philp kept their hopes alive with a smart save to deny Nathan Frater, but St Neots was making the running as first Gomersall and then Sutton tested the visiting keeper. However, despite superior possession St Neots lacked inspiration in of goal despite the introduction of substitutes and adopting a more attacking approach. A Sam Goode header from an Alfie Connor free kick was the closest

they came to reduce the arrears but Green once again saved well. Lee Watkins then spurned a golden chance by shooting wide of goal and the final blow came two minutes into added time. St Neots were caught short pushing too far forward and Bernard Christie collected a long defensive clearance to skilfully lob Philp who was to far out of his goal and complete the 5-2 final score line. St Neots: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Connor, Goode, Walker, Gomersal, Watkins, Mutswunguma, Bennett, Sutton Subs: N’Kala (for Mutswunguma 68 mins), Boxer (for Gomersall 71 mins), Noble and Rhiney. FA TROPHY – EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND Carlton Town
3
With just three minutes of normal time left and St Neots pushing hard for an equalizer that their second half performance had deserved with the potential reward of a replay, the outcome of this match was decided. The home side broke away for a rare late attack and with St Neots caught short at the back, substitute Mason Rhiney tripped Mommoke Akaunu in the area and home skipper Tom Maddison despatched the spot kick to put St Neots late hopes beyond reach. At half time trailing by a single goal to nil, St Neots looked lucky to be still in contention because they had been lacklustre and short of ideas in that first 45 minutes. However, they responded well, and had they shown the newly discovered second half industry and commitment before the break the outcome of the match could have been very different. Carlton are currently leading the BetVictor Northern League (South East Division) with only a single league defeat so far in nine fixtures but they made surprisingly little progress against a visiting side that did not produce a single shot on goal in the first twenty-five minutes. The visitors made two team changes preferring Panny Boxer to Joe Walker in defence and reinstating Tim N’Kala in midfield for Sam Gomersal who was unavailable. The one positive in defeat was the return to action as a substitute of former team skipper Ben Bradley who lengthy rehabilitation from injury had seen him last in action on 27th April, and his half hour on the pitch suggested that he will push for a permanent place in the starting line-up. In attacking terms, it was all Carlton in the opening 25 minutes. At times St Neots struggled to get the ball out of their own half as Aaron Opoku shot straight at James Philp when clear, and the lively Oliver Clark had two shots
St Neots Town blocked. From a Niall Davie cross, Opoku headed tamely over the bar and then Tyler Blake brought a good save from Philp. St Neots first shot arrived after 26 minutes from Price Mutswunguma but sadly it was too high, but St Neots were beginning to look competitive but lacked significant finish. Seven minutes before the break, from a set piece Davie free kick Oliver Clark rose unchallenged at the far post to head firmly into the net to open the scoring and although St Neots tried to respond they made little progress. The second half saw a different pattern to the play right from the first whistle. St Neots adopted a more attacking approach and in the first minute skipper Lee Watkins shot narrowly wide. However, it was self-destruct time for St Neots just three minutes later when with a repeat of his first half goal Oliver Clark produced another towering header – this time from a Davie corner – and St Neots found themselves chasing the game two goals in arrears. To their credit they responded well with some deft changes to their line up that saw Ben Bradley and Mason Rhiney on for Sam Bennett and Alfie Connor. They were almost gifted a goal when the hugely under-employed home goalkeeper Jack Steggles fluffed a clearance, but he was relieved when the ball ricocheted off Tim N’Kala for a goal kick. Prince had a shot blocked and Joe Sutton shot wide as St Neots applied pressure on the home defence, but Carlton still looked threatening on the break with Philp doing well to save from Opoku with his legs as he spread himself. Then after 71 minutes it was game on as from a Lee Watkins corner central defender Sam Goode claimed his third goal of the season scrambling the ball in from close range. Watkins shot wide and then provided the corner for Panny Boxer to heads narrowly
1 over the crossbar and to show St Neots’ dominance the home side were openly wasting time to preserve their lead. It was therefore against the run of play when three minutes from time Carlton broke swiftly from defence for substitute Akaunu to tumble in the area from a mistimed Mason Rhiney challenge and the successful Maddison spot kick earned his side their place in the next round. SOUTHERN LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP Yaxley 2
St Neots Town 1
St Neots bowed out of the Southern League Cup against near neighbours Yaxley, but can feel themselves extremely unfortunate as they lost to a final minute winner in an entertaining end to end cup tie. The one consolation was that the Saints performance was encouraging and provides great optimism that they can soon improve their league position. The game got off to a lively start, with the hosts hitting the woodwork after just four minutes, Waumsley denied after meeting a cross by Duncliffe, before Nolan struck a fierce shot over the bar from 18 yards after an initial effort by Sanders had been blocked. Saints responded with Watkins testing keeper Butcher from outside the box after his free kick had hit the wall, and then Butcher bravely saved at the feet of Nkala who had been put clear by Bennett after he dispossessed Waumsley. Saints continued to press for the opening goal with Bennett and Mutswunguma combining to set Bradley clear on the left but his driven cross across the face of goal eluded everyone. Yaxley created a number of chances themselves, Gothard heading over from a corner and then Cotton forcing a save from Philp with a shot from distance. As the half drew to a close Saints pressed again and after Butcher had saved
an effort from WilsonRhiney, BRADLEY opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, scoring from close range after being left unmarked from a WilsonRhiney corner. It was a disappointing start to the second half, when Yaxley got back on level terms within one minute of the restart, SANDERS finding the net from the edge of the area, and Yaxley continued to press with Sanders missing two great chances to put the hosts ahead with headed efforts going wide from a cross, and then a corner, from Butterworth and Waulmsley forcing a full length save from Philp. After a slow start to the second half Saints started to bring themselves back in to contention with Boxer failing to test keeper Butcher after meeting a corner from substitute Connor when well placed, Nkala creating a chance for Bennett whose shot was saved and then Goode heading wide from yet another corner from Connor. In the final minute of normal time Sanders headed wide from a Cotton cross, but in time added on with the game opening up Sanders had an effort cleared off the line by Saints centre back Goode before BUTTERWORTH found the winning goal in the final minute of added time, and yet again Sanders was involved as he created the chance after Butterworth
had hit the bar with his initial effort. Yaxley: Butcher, Duncliffe, Gothard, Butterworth, Watson, Bettles, Waumsley T, Hook, Sanders, Cotton, Nolan Subs: Williams (for Hook 77), Edge (for Waumsley 81), Chilvers (for Bettles 81), Waumsley S, Furnell Cautions: Hook (41) Saints: Philp, Kerins, Smith, Wilson-Rhiney, Boxer, Goode, Nkala, Watkins, Bennett, Bradley, Mutswunguma Subs Connor (for Bradley 46), Sutton, Walker, Clive, Abbott Cautions: Watkins (54) Ref:
