Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for

today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Aylesbury United and we hope your brief stay with us here today is an enjoyable one.

Saturday saw a decent performance against a high flying Daventry Town team and

the goal scored by PRINCE was one created by flowing , sweeping football and determination by the lads to keep the move going. Disappointed we didn’t get anything positive from the match after shipping two goals in quick succession however pleased with the overall performance and this hopefully will bode well going forward.

Tuesday’s Huntingdonshire Football Association Senior Challenge Cup quarter final

tie against Eynesbury Rovers will be rescheduled after the heavy rainfall caused the centre circle to flood. All very frustrating however we move on.

Off the pitch, those who subscribe to our monthly newsletter will already have read

about ongoing improvements we are making to our facilities including the purchase of a new fridge for the bar, new ice machine and most importantly, the installation of LED lighting in the Gregory Suite, which looks absolutely fantastic as well as being cheaper to run. It’s our long term intention to replace all the internal lighting but this will be done as and when finances allow.

Right then, back to today’s game. Cheer the boys on as

normal, enjoy the game and come in afterwards to watch the late Premier League Fixture in Reedmans.

Thanks for your continued support…

AYLESBURY UNITED Year founded: 1897 Chairman: Graham Read Club Website: www.aylesburyunited fc.co.uk

WELCOME ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS AYLESBURY UNITED WHO VISIT US FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.

After finishing fifteenth in the Division One Central last season, our visitors are now mounting a

determined challenge for at least a play-off place

this time around. They currently sit in ninth

place in the league table having lost just twice in their eleven completed league matches.

Formerly members of the Football Conference for one season in 1988/89 they have had a roller

coaster existence which culminated in three

seasons at Step Five in the Spartan South

Midlands League just a

decade ago. However, since that adventure at Step Two, Aylesbury

United have had fourteen

back to Step Five. This

and this is their twelfth

were limited because in

seasons at Step Three at Step Four. Their

problems during that

30 years period have included the loss of

their Buckingham Road Stadium after their

lease had expired and

their resultant nomadic existence which sees

them ground sharing at Chesham United this

season. Their recent

history is littered with FA

Cup highlights including a

Third-Round Proper home tie with Queens Park

Rangers in 1995. Added

to that they have reached the competition Proper on seven occasions in the past thirty years.

Recently they were in

local competition with Aylesbury FC at Step

Four, but that club has

now suffered demotion

season their cup exploits the FA Cup they lost in

the first Qualifying Round to Walthamstow, whilst in the FA Trophy they

were recently defeated at Haywards Heath.

Club History Aylesbury United were founded in 1897 when

three local sides: Night

School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury

Town decided to merge. The club, affectionately

known as ‘the Ducks’ due to the famous ‘Aylesbury’ breed, have experienced some incredible highs

over their long 112-year

history but now battle for

existence without a home ground to call their own. In the early years United played in local leagues

before joining the Spartan

club’s history. ‘Hercy’

season saw United back

Manager Steve Ketteridge

got the ball rolling on the

League Cup title to

League, a move which

club’s most successful period. A number of

events followed which

were to help: In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager,

and then a year later a young local lad called

Cliff Hercules made his

debut, unaware that he

was to become the most successful player in the

delivered the Isthmian Aylesbury, but it was

to be the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the Buckinghamshire

club. After almost going out of business, the

Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League

title by Sutton United a year later, despite

heading the table for long periods. The following

in administration and on and off the pitch.

Since that time Aylesbury have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches

some twenty miles out of Aylesbury whilst the committee work hard

keeping the club alive.

The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was

launched in earnest, and has generated plenty of

publicity, but so far, sadly, nothing concrete has

materialised in terms of a new home for the club.

WE CAN always count on the FA Cup to throw up memorable and unusual stories each season for Non-League clubs. So far this is the season for Chichester City. The Step 4 club have made it all the way to the first round for the first time in 60 years – and then got a bye straight into the second! For those who missed it, the bye came because of League One Bury’s demise. There were an odd number of clubs in the first round proper draw so it was decided the final ball in the hat would progress straight through, with the £36,000 prize money cheque thrown in for good measure. Of course, no football club or fan wants to be seen benefiting from someone else’s misfortune but it seemed fitting that the lowest ranked club left in the competition were the lucky recipients. They’ve even made a donation to the Bury start-up club, which they didn’t have to, showing they understand the importance of the football family. The players celebrated wildly on TV and fair play to them. They now get the chance to draw a plum tie in the second round and even dream of reaching the third round – what a story that would be. Like many others, Chichester City will be grateful for the financial benefits of the FA Cup too. The FA recently doubled the prize fund and this season we saw losing money in the qualifying rounds. The FA see the competition as a great way to put the money from TV deals back into football and it is certainly huge for clubs providing they spend it right. And that’s one of the big talking points – how does a club spend their money wisely? For some that might mean signing that striker that will win promotion. For others it’s purchasing new equipment or renovating the tea bar. Our friend from The Non-League Show, Tim Fuell, penned a column in last Sunday’s NLP on the very subject. As someone involved at Hayes & Yeading he is seeing first-hand how big a cup run can be with their first round proper tie against Oxford United selected for live TV. Check the column out if you can, but Tim brings up the idea of how money can be best spent – how about a voucher to be used by clubs at FA recommended outlets? So instead of the money being wasted on the team, an investment is made into the club’s infrastructure or is used to improve the ground. You’ll no doubt have your own views but anything that can be to the benefit of a football club long term is surely the way to go?

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town With fifteen minutes remaining St Neots led 1-0 and were on course for their first home league victory of the season. However, two goals by the visiting side in three minutes left them and their fans despondent. Overall it was a much-improved performance on their two previous home defeats but after such a traumatic start to the season points are far more valuable than performance. It was a contest marred by some inconsistent refereeing, especially in the second half when the official seemed to penalise some very petty offences by the home players whilst ignoring similar ones by the visiting side. Manager Marc Abbott had been busy in the week prior to the match drafting in four new signings, one of which Jonny Butler, returning to the club from Hertford Town, began the match in place of the injured Jake Kerins and two more of the new faces Ben Stokes and Lewis Foster made substitute appearances. The other team change saw Sam Gomersal return to the starting line-up in place of the injured Ben Bradley. For well over an hour St Neots looked solid defensively so the problem of leaking goals almost at will seemed to have been remedied but then in just a short three minutes spell the bad habits reappeared with one of the visiting substitutes going the damage down the left hand side. However, the side now has two further home matches in four days to try to retain their overall improvement whilst looking for another clean sheet. St Neots got off to a confident start with Prince Mutswunguma skilfully setting up strike partner Alan Musoke after two minutes, but his close-range effort was smothered by a defender. At the other end Jack Bowen shot across the face of goal after good work by Adam Creaney, and then Aaron King sent his effort high over the St Neots crossbar. St Neots continued to

1

Daventry Town

look confident, but they looked vulnerable to set pieces and two in three minutes midway through the half were repelled. Firstly, an effort from the edge of the area from Creaney was watched over his crossbar by James Philp and then a second free kick from a similar position was blocked by the defensive wall. After 29 minutes home supporters thought their side had won a penalty kick when Mutswunguma was sent sprawling in the box by a defender but the Referee waved play on, and then the same St Neots player wriggled past two defenders but overran the ball, and visiting keeper Justin Cerga saved bravely at his feet. More chances followed as Lee Watkins sent a free kick over the bar and from a Sam Gomersal cross, Joe Sutton shot wide. Mutswunguma was again brought down on the edge of the penalty area but taking the free kick himself, he sent the ball well over the bar. The first half ended with Adam Confue squandering probably the visitors’ best first half chance as he headed a Fitzgerald cross wide. The second half began as the first with St Neots taking the game to their visitors and they were rewarded just four minutes after the restart when Sam Gomersal picked up a clearance from a Daventry corner to run half the length of the field before finding Prince Mutswunguma unmarked on the left and he cut in to beat the keeper with a low shot for his sixth goal of the season. Jonny Butler, settling in confidently to the side, then intercepted a wayward pass but could only fire wide, and Joe Sutton set up Musoke, but he was robbed by a defender. The visitors then made a significant team change introducing Taylor Orosz for Creaney and it was to be his incisive play on the left flank that was to prove the match-winning difference. The match then lost much of its fluency with far too many free

2

kicks conceded by both sides and it was now that St Neots players picked up a clutch of yellow cards that seemed to dent their confidence. With fifteen minutes left that man Orosz rounded his marker to pull the ball back to the feet of Aaron King and he beat Philp’s despairing dive to level the scores. Daventry’s tails were now up and in their next attack they fashioned the winning goal as another Orosz cross was not cleared and from close range Jack Bowen claimed what proved to be the winning goal. It did require a good save from Cerga in added time to de Mutswunguma a late equalizer.
