Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s BetVictor Southern League Division One Central match.
This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Wantage Town FC and we hope you all enjoy your first visit to St Neots before travelling home safely later this evening.
As has been mentioned on our social media in the build up to today’s game, big matches are normally Cup matches or playoff games at the end of the season but today’s game is equally as big, if not bigger, with both our sides sitting at the wrong end of the table. A win for ourselves will put us eight points clear of our visitors yet a win for Wantage will close the gap down to just two points. Performances from ourselves have improved tenfold in recent weeks but as per normal, when you’re struggling, lady luck seems to desert you. Let’s hope she makes a timely return here this afternoon.
I thought I’d take in the Reserves’ home game with fourth placed West Wratting on
Saturday and what a decent game it was too. The visitors went in front before REIF CLARKE restored parity to the scoreline and then in the second half, the Saints dominated the game yet the visitor’s went back in front against the run of play yet the lads kept going and were awarded a penalty for a push and REIF CLARKE confidently slotted home from the spot to earn a well deserved share of the spoils, their first point of what’s been a pretty torrid season. Quite a decent crowd was in attendance too so a big well done to Mark Gearing, Clemmo and most importantly, all the lads. Now time to push on….
As the weather is now getting much colder, why not invest in one of our superb double-knit club scarves to keep yourself warm, on sale from behind the Reedman’s Bar at just £12. Right, back today’s game. Let’s get behind the lads from the off. Our 12th man is going to play an important part in proceedings today. Let’s make it an afternoon to remember.
PUMP UP THE VOLUME
From The Dugout‌ With Manager
Firstly, once again I’d like to thank the support we have consistently received over the block of home matches. New and old supporters have been fantastic both home and away. This is certainly having an effect on the players and we are hopeful that our season will turn into a positive one, starting today v Wantage Town.
We have two important fixtures over the next few weeks where we will be aiming for
maximum points - a challenge we are setting the players/ staff, but capable of delivering after recent performances versus good, experienced sides.
The previous match v Berkhamsted FC, we had a structured game plan - knowing their
strengths and style of play, we made sure we were tough to beat, staying in the game for as long as we could (we did that) until the turning point in the match - Jonny Butler’s 2nd yellow card. It was a real blow, to the team and our momentum that we had at the time. Personally, I felt it was very harsh and undeserving. We chased the game at 2-1 then got caught on the counter to concede late on. I was gutted for the players, they gave absolutely everything and again showed the small details in this league between winning and losing matches. The support was class, clapping the players of for their endeavours during the game.
On another note - Jake Kerins has decided to pursue football elsewhere so we wish Jake
well & thank him for all his efforts this season. With Jake moving on, it gives us a chance to recruit the right type of player needed at the football club - so we hope to have news very shortly!
We look forward to welcoming all the supporters today and once
again, thank you for all your continued backing for the Club. Please get behind the players throughout! Marc, Sean & Matty J

WANTAGE TOWN Year founded: 1892 Chairman: Ian Glover
WELCOME TO ALL ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS WANTAGE TOWN WHO VISIT US FOR OUR FIRST EVER MEETING FOR A CRUCIAL MATCH FOR BOTH SIDES. Although it is only November this league match can be seen as potentially pivotal for both sides this afternoon. It is not unkind to say that both the sides on view today have had a very disappointing start to the 2019/20 campaign. Local supporters will not need reminding that last season St Neots’ suffered only their second relegation in around a century! The first was in the 1981/82 season when the side was relegated to Division One of the United Counties League but bounced back at the end of that season as Champions. Wantage first won Step Four status six seasons ago . They were relegated three seasons later but won promotion back to Step Four at the end of last season. However, they have found the going tough and last weekend were beaten 8-0 at home by high flying Corby Town to register their thirteenth consecutive League defeat this season. Our lads have only five league points so

far this season – all collected away from home. Here at the Premier Plus Stadium we have been beaten in all six of our completed league matches so this afternoon something has to give – for one side or the other (or both!). There was an early glimpse of success for both sides in the FA Cup competition. St Neots defeated Godmanchester in a Preliminary Round replay before losing to Biggleswade Town, again in a replay, whilst Wantage won Extra Preliminary Round and Preliminary Round replays before losing to Swindon Supermarine. All that is history, now onto the here and now and Step Four survival. Club History Wantage Town FC (the Freds) has been affiliated to the Berks and Buck FA since 1892. Prior to this, they played in the Swindon & District North Berks and Reading & District Leagues., achieving success in 1903-04 in the Swindon Advertiser Cup, which they repeated in 1907-08 as well as becoming the League Champions.
After the 1st World War, the Freds briefly played in the North Berks League, winning the North Berks Cup in 1920 and 1921 and the Championship in 1921-22. After a brief period playing in the Reading& District League with no success then reentered the Swindon & District League, winning the title in 1933-34. The Fifties was the most successful period for the Club, winning the League in 1952-53 (without losing a game) and again in 1955-56, while in 1954-55, the Freds won no fewer than five cup competitions, including the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup. In 2010-11, the Freds won the Premier League title, but despite great effort on the part of the Club management, they were not promoted to the Southern League due to ground grading criteria not being achieved. In the 2012-2013 season, the club achieved the Southern League Ground grading, but finished runners-up to a very strong Marlow, and again missed out on promotion. The 2013-2014 saw a great season for the Freds . The First Team won the Uhlsport
Hellenic Premier league title, and with the appropriate ground grading in place, promotion to Division One (South and West) of the Southern League. The Reserves, as Runners Up, were promoted to Division One (West) of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, and the ‘A’ Team squad also gained promotion from the North Berks League to Division Two (West) of the Uhlsport Hellenic League. With sound management in place throughout the Club, on and off of the pitch, and with growing support from the local community, the Club has a unique opportunity to put in place the foundation upon which it can establish itself at a higher standard of football, at each level within the Club. This is reinforced with the maintenance of the F.A. Community Charter Standard, which recognizes the levels of care, coaching and management, within the Club. The Club also continue to invest in Youth football, including an Allied Counties team, a Junior section, as well as supporting Nursery football (4 to 6 years old), and teams from under 7 to under 15 for boys and girls thus cementing the Club’s growing involvement with football at all levels. Player Profiles Matt Biddle – Joint Manager Thinks he is playing real life football manager. Retired at the tender age of 26 due
to chocolate left knee. Was known as “busy bidds” during his playing days which basically means he tried hard. Won’t leave Tom Austin’s side so naturally became joint manager.

Will find anyone’s bad touch and punish them for it. Likes to arrive to games in a shirt and tie. Jozef Fullerton – Midfield Another new signing this season who is mainly known as “Fully”. Has had an impressive preseason campaign who is a hardworking centre midfielder that isn’t afraid to put himself about. Talker on the pitch, hits the mute button in the changing rooms. TIME TO MAKE HEADWAY! Parslow calls for con cussion review
FORMER National League champion and Non-Leag winner Daniel Parslow ue double is making a plea for football’s concussion protocol to be improved .
The 33-year-ol Town and York d ex-Cheltenham City defender retired in the summer following a head injury during a National League North game. He is now calling on football to follow rugby union and allow temporar substitutions while y by an independent a player is assessed allowed to continue.doctor before being Parslow told The NLP: “I feel there a place for that is in it will eventuall football and I think y come into play. hope it doesn’t take I just something serious for it to happen.”
SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town A deflected first half goal condemned St Neots to an undeserved sixth league defeat in as many home starts this season. Once again, the performance was improved overall, but there was still no reward. In a defiant second half the home side did everything but score a goal, but they should reflect on the fact that dominance of possession does not automatically produce the quality of chances to break down a determined stubborn defence. Manager Marc Abbott had senior players back from injury in his squad, but he kept faith with his players to opt for an unchanged starting lineup for only the second time this season. With Kempston Rovers pulling off a surprise away victory over league leaders Corby Town, the gap between St Neots and the sides above them was extended to five points. St Neots began well and created the first two chances of the match – the first after just 90 seconds when Joe Sutton darted between defenders to be upended on the edge of the penalty area but Prince Mutswunguma sent his free kick tamely over the crossbar. Then Lee Watkins did well to get to the bye line, but his cross was headed wide of target by Sam Gomersal. James Philp then did well at full stretch to parry a shot from David Manu but to St Neots’ relief Jamie Jellis skied his effort over the bar. However, after 14 minutes another cross by the lively Manu was only cleared as far as Sonny French and from around 25 yards, he sent in a snapshot that deflected off a defender to leave the St Neots custodian flat-footed. At that point St Neots did not deserved to be behind but it did seem to boost the confidence of the visiting side and they could have capitalised on a free kick just outside the penalty area by Ollie Hogg that was deflected over the bar by the defensive

wall. However, St Neots were soon on the offensive again with Jonny Butler moving forward to fire over the bar, and then Alan Musoke went through the visiting defence but delayed his finish and a defender got back to smother the shot. Little was seen of the visiting attack apart from a 34th minute effort by Jellis that Philp did well to push away one-handed under pressure from Ken Feyi. The half ended with St Neots skipper Lee Watkins picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign for a mistimed tackle meaning a one-match ban at the end of the month. It was a resolute and determined unchanged St Neots line-up that reappeared after the break. They adopted an attacking approach with Gomersal volleying over the bar when he should perhaps have done better, and then a Lee Watkins free kick only just cleared the crossbar with the visiting keeper looking beaten after Sutton had been brought down in full flight. Gomersal then made way, in a straight swap, for Ben Bradley who quickly featured in an attack that broke down on the edge of the penalty area. Aylesbury seemed to have decided to sit on their narrow advantage pulling off their two most attacking players and filtering back to blunt the St Neots attack. The match became very polarised with the visitors happy to depend on breakaway attacking moves and in one of these St Neots last defender Stevan Shaw was unjustly yellow carded when his opponent appeared to trip himself up! With thirteen minutes left and the pressure firmly on the visiting defence Prince Mutswunguma slipped his marker but shot disappointingly across the face of goal, and then in successive attacks Aaron Smith shot wide and a rising shot from Bradley was parried by Jack Hopwood. St Neots now had four players
1
in attack, but their final pass was not incisive enough and they looked vulnerable to a counterattack, with Philp having to save bravely at the feet of Harry Jones. Aylesbury tried successfully to ruin the clock down with some legitimate time wasting and they could have snatched a second goal deep into added time when Jellis broke clear and only a back breaking save by Philp at the expense of a corner foiled him. It was a disappointing outcome, but the improvement must not be overlooked. St Neots: Philp, Boxer, Smith, Butler, Shaw, Goode, Watkins, Gomersal, Musoke, Mutswunguma, Sutton Subs: Bentley (for Gomersal 54 mins), Foster (for Sutton 66 mins), Kerins (for Boxer 87 mins), Stokes and Badiani. SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Berkhamsted
3
Twelve minutes from time with St Neots bossing the game and looking odds on to steal a goal to level the contest against their table topping hosts, an outrageous decision by Referee Grzegoorz Konasiewicz saw influential St Neots midfielder Jonny Butler pick up a totally undeserved second yellow card to reduce the visitors to ten men. Butler won the ball in a 50/50 challenge that left the Berkhamsted player prone on the pitch and the Referee allowed play to continued for several seconds before stopping the game to get assistance for the home player. Then to the amazement of all he issued Butler with his second caution – even though he had not awarded a free kick for the challenge. Asked about his decision after the match the official replied, ‘I think I reacted too slowly’. That forced a quick St Neots reshuffle and in time added for stoppages leading Berkhamsted scorer Lewis Toomey broke clear to plunder a second goal for himself and a third for his side to give the final score line an almost unrepresentative picture of the contest. The home side started the day as league leaders not having lost any of their twelve league matches this season but St Neots’ second half performance was described by a home official as ‘our toughest test so far this season’. No reward then for St Neots but it should do the team confidence no harm as they go into next weekend’s crucial test against bottom of the table Wantage Town at the Premier Plus Stadium. There were two changes in the starting line-up for St Neots with Ben Bradley back to replace suspended skipper Lee Watkins, and recent signing Ben Stokes replaced Sam Gomersal who was on the bench. Both sides got off to a speedy start with home danger man Lewis Toomey lobbing narrowly wide with St Neots keeper James Philp stranded after just twenty seconds, and a minute later Prince Mutswunguma spotted home
St Neots Town keeper Xavier Leon off his line but sent his lengthy effort over the bar. Toomey was then impeded by a defender on the edge of the penalty area, but Jon Lacey sent his free kick high over the bar. However, Berkhamsted then struck an early significant blow when after eight minutes a Lacy cross saw Lewis Toomey time his run to the near post perfectly as he flicked the ball past Philp. St Neots responded with Ben Bradley bringing a good save from the home keeper, but the home side were showing just why they are promotion favourites with some clinical attacking play as Alex Taylor had a net bound shot deflected for a corner. The match was competitive with Joe Sutton finding his way into the Referee’s notebook, before another lengthy effort by Aaron Smith tested the keeper. Nine minutes before half time the home side stamped their first half superiority on the game as Jon Lacey got on the end of a Joshua Chamberlain cross to extend his sides’ lead. Both Philp and Sam Goode blocked further home side efforts, but two minutes before half time an Alan Musoke cross picked out Prince Mutswunguma and his acrobatic overhead kick put St Neots back in the match at 2-1. After the break St Neots bossed the contest although they failed to capitalise on superior possession because they lack a significant finish. It was 24 minutes into the second half before Berkhamsted had a shot at the St Neots goal, and then Philp kept his side in the contest with a brilliant save to deny Lacy’s searching chip. St Neots’ substitute Jake Kerins on for Stokes made an early impact having a shot cleared off the line by Ryan Kinnane, and as the second half reached a critical stage the dismissal of Butler had its effect. After a six minutes delay whilst home skipper Ben Spaul received extensive treatment the match had lost much of its intensity, further slowed down by more substitutions. With three
1
minutes of normal time remaining, Toomey was denied a second goal when he went clear but failed to finish, but he only had to wait four more minutes before he was again at the near post to take advantage of some hesitancy to convert a Chamberlain cross to dash St Neots’ hopes. Mutswunguma almost had the final word with an effort deep into added time that he sent wide of the far post. St Neots: Philp, Boxer, Smith, Butler, Shaw, Goode, Sutton, Bradley, Musoke, Stokes, Mutswunguma Subs: Kerins (for Stokes 60 mins), Foster (for Bradley 84 mins), Gomersal (for Musoke 84 mins) and Abbott Cards: Butler (RED – 2 x Y – 39 & 78 mins), Sutton (Y – 31 mins) Goals: none Berkhamsted: Leon, Taylor, Cooper, Amu, Kinnane, Farrelly, Summerfield, Spaul, Toomey, Lacey, Chamberlain Subs: Hercules (for Summerfield 60 mins), Witham (for Amu 72 mins), Sexton (for Spaul 84 mins), Murphy and Stobbs.
