WELCOME Our performances in said games have been as big as the stature of the games themselves, full of heart, passion and endeavour Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to a rather chilly Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier division fixture. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Banbury United Football Club and we hope you all have an enjoyable, if brief, stay with us here in Cambridgeshire this afternoon and we also extend a very warm welcome to the young ladies of Stevenage Starlets FC, who are spending the afternoon with us and once again, we really hope you all enjoy your matchday experience with us this afternoon. Hopefully the ‘Beast from the East’ hasn’t been as ferocious as first expected and we have managed to get today’s game on meaning we will have a 100% record so far with our home fixtures, testament to the good work which has been carried out on the pitch over the last couple of seasons, so as I’m penning these notes, it’s definitely a case of ‘fingers crossed’.

Some big games in recent weeks against teams in and around the top five in the division and I’ve got to say our performances in said games have been as big as the stature of the games themselves, full of heart, passion and endeavour. Ok, we may not have got the three points in some of the fixtures but we have pushed the opposition all the way, most notably in the Hereford and Slough games. Very, very pleasing, both from the view of a director and of course an avid supporter of the Saints. A big shoutout to the hardy souls who travelled to Edgar Street last Tuesday to cheer us on, massive credit to you all. Off the pitch, again, as I write this, we are very close to being able to announce our new Chairman. We are just awaiting the relevant paperwork being returned from the Football Association and we will release all the details.

Details of our Hunts FA Senior Cup appearance are beginning to take shape. The Final will take place on Wednesday 2nd May at the home ground of the losing semi – finalists, of which the clubs are Eynesbury Rovers and Yaxley FC. This Semi-Final was due to take place on Tuesday evening (27th February) however due to the weather situation, may well have not yet taken place. Keep an eye on the website and our social media channels for further details. Ok then, back to today’s game. Keep your fantastic support going again this afternoon, play your part off the pitch and I’m sure the lads on the pitch will match your efforts. THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED AMAZING SUPPORT…..

MANAGER’S NOTES We welcome today Banbury and all their fans as we look to put some points back on the board after two close but tough encounters. And we know today will be exactly the same against a good footballing side. Despite being a bit battered and bruised squad wise recently, Scott & Lewis (hamstring) Harry (kidney stones) and Kyran suspended. We have performed fantastically well and really shown we can compete in the league with anyone on our day. And with a run of Chesham, Weymouth, Tiverton,

Hereford and Slough and picking up 6 points that proves that. And a special thank you to traveling away fans making some huge journeys we respect it and appreciate it. So it will be safe again today. A base of honesty and character combined with brave football and boys of magic.

So wrap up warm and give us your support as we aim to entertain and represent the club positively again. Finally a warm welcome to our mascots today we hope they have a great experience with us today. COYS Matt Clements

BANBURY UNITED FC Joined League: 1931 Chairman: Ronnie Johnson Website: www.banburyunitedfc.co.uk Nickname: The Puritans

A special welcome for our next home Southern League Premier Division fixture of the season with BANBURY UNITED our visitors this afternoon. After being very early season leaders of the table Banbury have spent most of the season just outside the play-off places and are currently eighth five points and three places ahead of our lads at the time these notes were penned. At the end of the 2014/15 season Banbury finished 21st in the table and was relegated to the South and West Division but roared back to win promotion back to the Premier Division at their first attempt. In our nine meetings with Banbury we have won four times and drawn twice but all four of those victories came in our first five meetings, so some recent improvement would be desirable. Earlier in the season we travelled to Banbury returning with a creditable draw thanks to a Dylan Williams goal in the second half, having trailed at half time. Banbury are a fan-owned club and have been playing at Step Three since the year 2000. Recently their best showing at this level was last season when they finished sixth – just one place but five points below the playoffs. Banbury have reached the first round Proper of the FA Cup three times in their history but this season they bowed out at the third round qualifying stage to Northern Premier League side Shildon. In the FA

Trophy they defeated Tiverton (whom they had also knocked out of the FA Cup) but lost to Farnborough in the Second Qualifying Round and in the BFB League Cup they were early casualties losing to lower graded Didcot Town in the first round. CLUB HISTORY Banbury United’s genesis is to be found in Spencer Villa, a works club formed in 1931. Friendly matches were played on a ground on the town’s Middleton Road. The club joined the Banbury Junior League for the 1933-34 season and won the championship at their first attempt. They changed their name to Banbury Spencer in 1934 and moved to their current ground for the start of the 1934-35 season in which they competed in the Oxfordshire Senior League. This too they won at their first attempt. During the season they were elected to the Birmingham Combination for the start of the 1935-36 season. After the war, Banbury resumed in the Birmingham Combination and turned professional for the 1946-47 season. In 1947-48, with attendances averaging 3,500, they finished runnersup in the league and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 2-1 at Colchester United, at that time a Southern League club. The status of the Birmingham Combination began to decline

in the early 1950s. At the end of the 1953-54 season the league disbanded and, along with most of its remaining clubs, Banbury joined the Birmingham League. In 195960 they reached the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup for the second time, again losing to Nuneaton, this time 1-0. In 1961-62, Banbury reached the first round of the FA Cup for the second time, travelling to Third Division Shrewsbury Town and losing 7-1. In 1965 a group of local businessmen bought the club and Banbury Spencer became Banbury United and during the summer of 1966 Banbury were elected to the Southern League. Significant improvements were made to the ground. Floodlights were installed and the famous old railway coaches that had been used as changing rooms were removed and replaced by a new clubhouse. The first round of the FA Cup was reached twice more; in 197273, United lost 2-0 at home to Barnet, then a Southern League club, and the following season, after a 0-0 draw at home, they lost 3-2 away to Fourth Division Northampton Town in a replay. United twice reached the last sixteen of the FA Trophy, losing 1-0 in a replay to Hereford United in 1970-71 and, in 1973-74, by the same score in a second replay to eventual Southern League champions Dartford. From the late 1970s

United’s fortunes declined sharply as debts mounted and in 1990, United finished 21st of 22 and were relegated for the first time in their history, starting season 1990-91 in the Hellenic League. In 1999/200 the club clinched the Hellenic League championship with two games remaining and Banbury United were back in the Southern League almost ten years after leaving it. The restructure of non-league football meant that the 2004-05 season was anticipated as keenly as any in the history of the club and United were equal to the challenge of Premier Division football – but only just. Winless after five games, they rose to ninth by the end of October but then struggled and by February had sunk to within one place of the relegation zone and spent two months there before a late improvement saw them to safety with a game to spare. Five wins in the first eight games of the 2011-2 season took United to second place but as players left the cash-strapped club, tempted by better offers, an alarming slump followed. Winning only six of their next 31 matches, United fell into the relegation places on Easter Monday. Two wins in the last three games saw them to safety. In 2013/14 Banbury finished 16th in the table nine points above the relegation zone. Relegated the following season Banbury bounced straight back to the Premier Division this season via the play-offs. It’s the biggest shake-up in the Non-League game since 2004… and now the FA has revealed what it might look like. From 2018/19, an extra division will be added at Steps 3 and 4. The FA’s Leagues Committee has released provisional Step 3 and 4 league boundaries ahead of next season’s National League System restructuring. At their meeting on February 6, the Committee decided the principles to be applied when allocating clubs at the two steps. The Committee decision was taken after hearing the results of two exercises, the first using the tables at the end of last season (2016/17) and the second based on the tables as of January 2 2018. It is emphasised by the FA that, for the time being, this is a guide only and they have deliberately not included names of clubs because the full allocation can only be made when the identities of the constituent clubs are known. It is clarified that this is for season 2018/19 and the make-up of clubs in future seasons may alter this approach. At Step 3, the decision is to implement a north division, a central ‘band’ from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, together with south west and south east divisions, as shown in The NLP’s graphic below. The Southern League is to administer the pink and yellow areas, the Isthmian League the green area and the Northern Premier League to administer the area coloured black. At Step 4, the seven areas will be divided as shown in The NLP’s graphic below. The Isthmian League has responsibility for the green, blue and orange areas, the Southern League administers the yellow and pink areas and the Northern Premier League in the area coloured black. The Northern Premier League is calling a meeting of its clubs to decide whether to remain with a north/south split or to change to an east/west allocation.

1ST TEAM REPORT SLOUGH TOWN Southern League Premier Division Two goals either end of the first half proved sufficient to give Slough all three points as they avenged an early season defeat at the Premier Plus Stadium. The game had barely got under way when after 35 seconds in the first attack of the match Slough were in front – the quickest goal ever scored against St Neots in a Southern League fixture. That might have dampened the hopes of any side but for much of the remaining 89 minutes St Neots looked undaunted and might well have returned home with a share of the points. However, their reshaped side lacked bite in front of goal and despite a solid overall performance they can have no complaints about the result. The day began badly with the news that striker Lewis Irwin had failed to shake off an injury sustained in the midweek trip to Hereford, so Stefan Broccoli was restored in a reshaped attack. In midfield Kyron Wiltshire was serving the first of his two-match suspension with David Bridges replacing him but another late problem surfaced with Jack Bradshaw breaking down in the warm-up, so Liam McDevitt came in at the heart of the defence with the versatile Tom Wood moving to full back. With only two substitutes (one of them less than fully fit) it was just as well that there were no further injury scares. That lightning quick goal resulted from some very shoddy early defending. James Dobson waltzed past Johnny Herd to produce the perfect cross and Perry Coles, recently acquired

2

ST NEOTS TOWN from Basingstoke and making his home debut, managed to get free from the two central defenders to give Finlay Iron no chance with a crisp finish. St Neots responded with a Herd free kick comfortably saved by home keeper Jack Turner and apart from a 12th minute let off when Chris Flood was left unmarked to crash a volley against a goalpost, St Neots came back well to compete with some confidence. They still tended to play with their back line too narrow giving wide men Dobson and Warren Harris too much space, but Slough failed to make their attacking possession count and Iron was seldom tested. After 40 minutes a Herd corner went over the head of Turner to finish up in the net, but the Referee had spotted a push on the keeper and a free kick was awarded. Then in the last three minutes of the half there was non-stop action. A glancing header by Mark Nisbet from a Matt Lench corner was headed off the line by the hardworking Luke Knight but from a Guy Hollis long throw, Dobson headed on to the far post and Perry Coles claimed his second goal of the match. In added time at the end of the first half St Neots produced the perfect response when from another Herd corner Nabil Shariff rose to head over the keeper to keep the visitors in the game. Within two minutes of the restart the Referee missed a clear handball by a home defender following a corner and as St Neots vainly appealed, the home side broke forward with Dobson going clear of the defence but

1

with only the keeper to beat he saw his shot rebound from a post. The pace of the game then seemed to drop and for a spell much of the play was in midfield with neither side seeming able to carve out a real opening. Dobson did well to get past his marker to cross to set up Flood for a free header that he put straight into the arms of Iron, but St Neots were beginning to look the more confident and Shariff unselfishly set up Dion SembieFerris whose net bound effort was blocked by a defender. A spate of late bookings broke up the rhythm of the game, but three minutes from time after a sweet move started by Knight deep in the St Neots half, Shariff should have done better but sent his shot high over the bar. However, within Hitchin beaten at Basingstoke, St Neots remain eleventh in the table. St Neots: Iron, Wood, Herd, Knight, McDevitt, Parr, SembieFerris, Bridges, Shariff, Williams (D), Broccoli Subs: Buddle and Bradshaw (neither used) Cards: Bridges (Y – 66 mins), Williams (Y – 69 mins), McDevitt (Y – 82 mins) Goals: Shariff (45 + 1 min)

1ST TEAM REPORT Hereford United Southern League Premier Division St Neots returned from their challenging and lengthy midweek trip to Hereford unbowed despite a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of the league leaders. In front of a massive crowd of 2402 they produced a very creditable performance against the best side in the Division and were unlucky not to get a share of the spoils after matching Hereford in almost every department. Hereford boast the best defensive record in the league and are the second highest scorers, but they were taken all the way by St Neots who gave a brave determined showing and were close to becoming only the third side to win at Edgar Street this season. A fifth successive victory for the hosts has given them a four-point lead at the top with two matches in hand over the chasing pack, with St Neots remaining in eleventh place, eight points shy of the play-off places. Skipper Luke Knight returned to the side after suspension in place of David Bridges who was unavailable, and Dion Sembie Ferris was preferred to Stefan Broccoli who was on the substitutes bench. Hereford began very impressively forcing their visitors on the back foot from the first whistle. In only their first attack Jack Bradshaw had to clear off the line from a corner and then Finlay Iron produced a good low save to deny Pablo Heysham. St Neots did not let their opponents have it all their own way for after 15 minutes Kyron Wiltshire worked his way past two defenders to

1

St Neots Town be brought down just out the area, but Bradshaw’s driven free kick was blocked by the defensive wall. Four minutes later St Neots had a let off when a Rob Purdie corner was won in the air by Jimmy Oates, but his effort was deflected as a defender stuck out a leg. Hesham was then wide with a header from another corner but St Neots always looked dangerous on the break and Lewis Irwin had a low shot deflected wide by Ryan Green. A 28th minute four by Taylor Parr earned him a booking and Hereford a free kick in a dangerous area but Jamie Bird’s effort was wide of the post and there was plenty of goalmouth action in the final five minutes of the first half as from a Nabil Shariff cross, Irwin saw his shot cleared off the line by Dara O’Shea and then at the other end Iron produced a stunning double save to deny Bird and Heysham. Hereford’s determined start to the second half brought them success. After Purdie had headed a corner onto the roof of the net they scored the only goal of the game after 55 minutes. Again, it came from one of the plethora of set-piece free kicks as another Purdie corner saw Dara O’Shea rise above the defence to power a header into the roof of the net despite the unlucky Iron getting his fingers to the ball. That setback seemed to spur the visitors and in quick succession home custodian Martin Horsell saved well from Shariff and then the same St Neots player headed narrowly wide from a Bradshaw corner. Iron then denied Heysham with an impressive save and then shepherded a Bird

0 free kick around the far post. In a bid to vary his options Matt Clements sent on Stefan Broccoli for the tiring Sembie-Ferris and he almost put Irwin clear of the defence, but a covering defender got back to rob him. With around ten minutes left Iron produced the save if the match diving full length to push away a shot from Mike Symons. Matt Clements declared himself ‘extremely proud’ of the work ethic and overall display of his side against ‘the best side we have played this season’.

St Neots: Iron, Bradshaw, Herd, Knight, Wood, Parr, SembieFerris, Wiltshire, Irwin, Shariff, Williams Subs: Broccoli (for Sembie-Ferris 73 mins), Buddle and Rudman. Cards: Parr (Y – 28 mins), Wiltshire (Y – 31 mins), SembieFerris (Y – 47 mins), Knight (Y – 51 mins) Goals: none

HUNTINGDONSHIRE PREMIER CUP ROUND TWO (9/March/2006) ST NEOTS

2

BIGGLESWADE UNITED

This was only the second meeting of these two sides and like their first match it was very closely contested with a single goal difference deciding the outcome. With three senior players still injured St Neots Manager Steve Kuhne opted to rest two more – himself and Scott Grant - and so it was time for the fringe players to prove themselves. Already through to the Hunts Senior Cup Final St Neots aim is a County Cup double and this victory earned them a home semi-final with Huntingdon Town so they will consider it a night’s work well done. On a very wet pitch the sides had to first adapt to the conditions and after one early shot wide of target by Gary Walker the visitors began to confidently dominate proceedings. Leroy Odd outpaced the defence to shoot across the face of goal and Steve Young produced a smart save to deny Robbie O’Dell and with Biggleswade employing a three-man attack there was no shortage of goalmouth action. After 14 minutes the visitors forged ahead when Robbie O’Dell picked the ball up well inside his own half and accelerated forward to find

Jack Weeden with a perfectly judged through ball and his pace took him clear to fire low past Young. St Neots had to make an early substitution with Jason Darvall making his first appearance since January coming on to replace James Hatch suffering a recurrence of his weekend injury. The visitors continued to look the batter side but after 32 minutes they conceded a free kick 25 yards from goal and Matt Endersby produced a peach of a shot to leave visiting keeper Darren Ayre grasping at air as he was beaten at his near post. That equaliser seemed to level up the contest and after 37 minutes debut striker Ben Smith had a fine header from a Mark Franklin corner cleared off the line but the effort would not have counted because the referee had spotted an infringement. Both sides were more cautious after half time with the focus now on a midfield battle where Jon Hoggett and Andre Maltay looked really strong it began to look that St Neots had regained their confidence. Steve Young had to save from Martin Russell and Robbie O’Dell but the visitors’ efforts were now more long range and midway through the half St Neots withdrew

Smith and introduced Steve Kuhne to the attack. Within two minutes they had taken the lead as Maltay made a strong unchallenged run from midfield before feeding Darvall wide on the right. His cross was early and with defenders caught out of position Gary Walker forced the ball home from close range to claim his sixth goal in five consecutive matches. Much of the remainder of the second half saw Biggleswade pushing forward in search of an equaliser but the St Neots defence superbly marshalled by Gary Watts now had the measure of the visiting attack and Young was seldom tested. They shook off the fatigue of their fourth match in nine days and held out fairly comfortably to earn their semi-final berth.

St Neots: Young, Clark, Endersby, Watts, Hurst, Hoggett, Hatch (Darvall 22 mins), Maltay, Smith (Kuhne 67 mins), Walker, Franklin Subs not used: Grant. Goals: Endersby (32 mins), Walker (69 mins). John Walker

1ST TEAM REPORT ST NEOTS TOWN Southern League Premier Division St Neots overhauled their tally of league points from last season with this narrow victory over visiting Tiverton to complete their first league ‘double’ of the season. The margin of victory could and should have been greater but two disallowed first half goals gave the visitors a slim hope of a comeback right up until the final whistle. It was only St Neots’ fourth clean sheet in the league this season with the last one being three months ago on 14th November. However, St Neots keeper Finlay Iron did not have a direct shot to save throughout this match, so the victory was thoroughly deserved. St Neots fourth league victory in five matches represents their best run this season ahead of a Tuesday evening trip to new league leaders Hereford United. With Luke Knight and Liam McDevitt suspended, Scott Sinclair injured and Harry O’Malley unwell, St Neots selection options were very limited, but they recalled Lewis Irwin, Stefan Broccoli and David Bridges with Dion SembieFerris the only senior player on the substitutes bench. Now with four defeats in their last six matches Tiverton’s hopes of a play-off place in their first season back at Step Three look to be fading, now five points shy of fifth place. After a couple of good moves in the opening ten minutes little was seen of the visiting attack and St Neots settled to enjoy most of the first half possession. Dylan Williams cut in to fire narrowly

TIVERTON TOWN

over the bar and then burst into the area to shoot narrowly wide of the far post with visiting keeper Alexis Andre well beaten. As the pressure mounted Jack Bradshaw and acting skipper David Bridges had shots saved but after 26 minutes St Neots took the lead. The goal came from a perfectly delivered corner to the far post when Tom Wood, recalled in defence to replace the suspended Liam McDevitt, stole in to fire into the net. After 37 minutes St Neots thought they had doubled their lead when from a deep Williams cross Nabil Shariff headed into the net, but the Referee had spotted a push and the effort was ruled out. If that was a disappointment worse was to follow two minutes before the break, when an early cross from Stefan Broccoli found Lewis Irwin a yard beyond the final defender and his crisp finish beat the diving Andre, only for an Assistant Referee’s flag to chalk out another ‘goal’. A two or three goal half time cushion would have adequately summed up the first 45 minutes but that was no to be. Tiverton came out with a more positive approach to the game after the interval. In the first five minutes both Landricombe brothers were allowed space in the penalty area but Michael shot badly wide and a spectacular overhead volley by leading scorer Levi, passed just beyond the far post. However, Andre was still the busier of the goalkeepers rising above a packed defence to punch clear from a Herd free kick, and then in action again to save at the feet of Shariff. The visitors then sent on two

0

substitutes and adopted a more attacking formation, but they never managed to win enough possession to seriously test the home defence. Another Shariff effort was well saved and both Broccoli and Irwin had shots blocked as defenders threw themselves at the ball. In the last ten minutes the game descended into a very scrappy affair with the Referee booking five players for minor offences. More substitutions followed but in that final period neither side managed to get a serious shot at goal with St Neots looking happy to preserve their narrow advantage. A late booking for man of the match Kyron Wiltshire now means he will miss two of St Neots upcoming matches.
