Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Emirates FA Challenge Cup, First Round Qualifying tie. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bishops Stortford Football Club and we hope you all enjoy your brief stay with us here this afternoon. Anybody who came along to Tuesday night’s Southern League Challenge Cup match with Bedford Town certainly got their monies worth of entertainment – Four goals and a penalty shootout win for the lads in which every single spot kick was tucked away with such assuredness and all for just Five Pounds. You even got to see Harry O’Malley open his account for the club with a very important header, great stuff and great preparation for today’s huge cup tie. Not just a place in the next round at stake but also the windfall of £6000 to the winners. The FA have increased the prizefund to winners of each round considerably this season and whoever wins today grabs that huge prize and puts themselves in with a chance of winning £9000 in the next round. This can be an absolute godsend to all Non League Clubs who enter this magical competition, from today’s game you can amass a huge £30,000 with just three wins so plenty to play for. Prior to Tuesday night’s game our Under 18 side got back to winning ways on Monday evening. Having somewhat surprisingly lost their opening fixture at Ely City the previous week 3-2, they firmly put this result to rest with a convincing 7-1 win over league new boys Long Melford. John Walker’s match report can be found later in today’s edition so well done boys, you’ve set the benchmark for future performances and let’s see if we can make it a hattrick of league titles come the end of the season with a continuation of this game’s efforts. Right then, back to today’s Cup tie. Please do get behind the lads from the first whistle. Your voices and support really do make a difference. Pump Up The V

From the Dugout… With
Good afternoon all and hope you are well. The magic of the cup returns and we welcome our visitors from Bishop Stortford. After a positive and brave performance midweek the signs are coming that our form is returning. Which I’ve always been confident of and know we will click to the levels I require. With some players starting to step up and a few new faces appearing in the upcoming days and weeks, we take that performance into today with more of the same on view. We have a brave and exciting team who can excite and play attacking football. Talking of new faces, I’m delighted to welcome Gary Wharton into the squad after spending a whole year doing his rehab with us behind closed doors and two years out of the game completely. His attitude, quality and standards will be a huge positive for the team. With that, also one of Cambridge United’s brightest young talents, Ben Worman. We thank Cambridge for allowing us to loan in an exciting, bright and talented attacking player and I’m sure you were impressed with his debut and what potential he has for a young man who’s only just turned 17 in the last 7 days. Id also like to mention how outstanding Taylor Parr has been this season from an individual point and congratulate Harry O’ Malley on his first goal for the club. So, plenty of positives, plenty to build on and trust me, plenty more to come in the upcoming weeks. I thank you for your ongoing support and need your voices and encouragement to help us progress through and start a cup journey together. COYS

BISHOPS STORTFORD FC Joined League: 1874 Chairman: Ian Kettridge Website: www.bscfc.co.uk The Club was formed on Thursday 28th January 1874 at the Chequers Hotel in the town. Just over two weeks later the first match was played with the East of England Non Conformist Grammar School (now Bishop’s Stortford College) being defeated by two goals to one, both scored by the Rev. R J Tomes. In that first season fifteen games were played, three of which were won, with seven others drawn. The Club colours at that time were vivid crimson and olive green. After several years of playing just friendly matches the Club became one of the founder members of the Hertfordshire Football Association in 1885 and played in the first ever County Senior Cup Competition that same season, beating Aspley 2-1 away from home in their first match. The Club progressed into league football in the 1890s by joining a succession of locally based competitions. The highlights between 1889 and 1929 were the “double” seasons in 1912-13, when both the Saffron Walden & District League and the Stansted & District League titles were secured, and 1919-20, when the East Herts League and the Stansted & District League were won. The Club was accepted into the FA Challenge Cup for the first time in the 1924-25 season and then it was in 1929 that the next milestone was reached when the Club was accepted into Division 2 (East) of the Spartan League. A good start was made with the Ministry of Health being well beaten by five goals to nil. Three years later, at the end of the 1931-32 season, the Division 2 (East) championship was won and
with it promotion to Division 1 of the Spartan League. A year later Stortford won the Herts Senior Cup for the first time. During the Second World War the Club played mainly friendly matches against locally based service units. The 1945-46 season saw Stortford compete again in the Spartan League, where they stayed until the formation of the Delphian League in 1951. The 1950s saw steady progress in the Club’s fortunes with the League Championship being won in season 1954-55. Until this time progress in the FA Amateur Cup had been nothing but a dream but in season 1962-63 Stortford found themselves only two games away from Wembley. In a tense quarterfinal, in front of 9,000 people, Stortford were defeated 1-0 by the Isthmian League Champions Wimbledon at Plough Lane and Wimbledon went on to win the Cup. The mid 1960s turned out to be a very exciting period for the Club as in the space of three years, the Bishops having by now joined the expanded Athenian League, were runners-up in Division 2, Champions of Division I and runners-up in the Premier Division. The Premier Division title was eventually captured in the 196970 season. Then, a long-term ambition was realised when an application to join the Isthmian League was accepted for the 1971-72 season. The early 1970s was also another very successful period in the Club’s history, 3rd place in the League was achieved in season 1973-74, Stortford’s best ever position, whilst six Cup
Final victories were achieved in the space of four seasons. The undoubted pinnacle of these highlights came fittingly in the Club’s centenary season when the FA Amateur Cup was won at Wembley Stadium by beating Ilford 4-1 in front of over 30,000 spectators. This in fact was the last FA Amateur Cup Final ever held. Scorers for Stortford were Dave Lawrence, Peter Leakey, Dennis Murphy and lastly Martin Smith from the penalty spot. The rest of the decade was something of an anti-climax, with the Club being relegated to Division 1, but there was another huge upturn in the Club’s fortunes as the 1980-81 season was another memorable one in the Bishop’s history. The Club won the Isthmian League Division 1 title and the “double” came in May 1981 in the Final of the FA Trophy when Terry Sullivan scored a late goal to leave lsthmian League Premier Division side Sutton United defeated 1-0 This victory came after a record breaking run of 13 games that had begun in the Preliminary Round in the September of the previous year. In achieving this success, Stortford became the first ever Club to capture both the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Trophy. After reaching the quarter final of the FA Trophy again in 1982 and setting the record for consecutive unbeaten matches in that Competition (17), Bishops turned their attention to the FA Cup. Though they had reached the Competition proper 5 times before, it was in the 1982-83 season that they really made an impact. After disposing of local rivals Harlow Town, 3rd Division
Reading were beaten at Elm Park in the 1st Round and then Slough Town were defeated in the 2nd Round. The 3rd Round saw the Bishops drawn away at Middlesbrough, then managed by Malcolm Allison. In the tie at Teesside, Stortford fought back from a two goal half-time deficit to earn a well merited replay. The following Tuesday over 6,000 people packed into the Rhodes Avenue ground for the replay. Lyndon Lynch gave Stortford the lead on the stroke of half time but Middlesbrough’s superior fitness told in the end and they fought back and eventually won through with two late goals. Stortford again faced League opposition in 1985 going out after a replay to Colchester United. Towards the end of the 1980s, two former favourite players of the Rhodes Avenue crowds returned as Managers. Firstly, former England international John Radford, who had played in the FA Trophy winning side, became manager in 1987. He took the Club to success in the Herts Senior Cup in his first season and continued the following season, 1988-89, by winning the AC Delco Cup (Isthmian League Cup). Apart from the Cup run in, he also took the team on a promotion challenge, which only faltered in the closing weeks and the Club finished 7th in the table. Terry Moore, a record holder in his days as Stortford’s goalkeeper when he collected both FA Amateur and FA Trophy cup winners’ medals - the only player to do so for the same Club, then became manager and he led the Bishops to victories in the Premier Inter-League (Clubcall) Cup and Isthmian League Full Members (Loctite) Cup. In more recent times, the Club was relegated to Division 1 at the conclusion of the 1991-92 term, but with ex-Arsenal star John Radford now as the Blues manager Stortford regained Premiership status by winning the Division 1 Championship in season 1993-94. Life back in the Premier Division was not easy,
with a best position of 12th being achieved in season 1995-96, although the Herts Charity Cup was won the following season with a crushing 4-0 defeat of Ware. Off the field the Club suffered delays moving to its new ground at Dunmow Road having left the Rhodes Avenue ground at the end of 1997, which they had been at since 1919. After 18 months during which home league matches were played at Boreham Wood, St. Albans City, Hitchin Town, Dagenham & Redbridge and Ware, the Club were once again relegated to Division One at the end of the 1998/99 season. But a new and eagerly awaited chapter in the Club’s history began on Saturday 17th July 1999 when the new Woodside Park Stadium finally opened with a pre-season friendly against Norwich City. The match ended in a 2-2 draw in front of a 918 crowd. On Friday 3rd September a crowd of 2,444 saw the official opening of the stadium performed by George Graham followed by a match against a strong Tottenham Hotspur side including Hans Segers, David Ginola, Chris Armstrong, Ruel Fox, Jose Dominguez, Mauricio Tarico, Steffen Freund, Stephen Clemence and Justin Edinburgh. Blues made the record books on Thursday 30th December 1999 when Bishop’s Stortford won 5-3 at Chertsey in a Ryman League match, which was the last Association Football League match played in England in the 20th Century. The Club, supporters and team finally settled in at Woodside Park but only after some serious problems with the pitch had seen many postponed games and fixture headaches in those first two seasons. In the 2000/2001 campaign, Blues came with a late challenge after making wholesale squad changes at Christmas and narrowly missed out on a promotion place. However, by season 2001/2 the playing surface was immaculate and hosting Ryman and England
representative games along with many local and junior league cup finals and Blues themselves were faring better in the League. Promotion back to the Ryman Premier after a 3 years absence was secured on the 6th April 2002 at home to Walton & Hersham. The 2-0 victory was courtesy of goals by club captain Al-James Hannigan and Tim Langer. Manager Martin Hayes had done the job required of him by both Club Directors and supporters. Meanwhile, Blues top scorer Vinnie John was trialling at League Clubs up and down the country, with QPR, Torquay and Wycombe Wanderers all showing interest. His departure at the end of that excellent season seemed most likely even after he rattled in the Blues 100th League goal of the season in the final game at Woodside Park in that promotion campaign. A week later and Blues had finished second, missing out on the championship to Jimmy Chapman’s Ford Utd by just one point as the last day of action saw Blues win 4-2 at Whyteleafe and Ford just hang on to win 2-1 at home to George Talbot’s Uxbridge. Vinnie John’s departure though was not to be for almost another season. The 2002/3 campaign saw Bishop’s Stortford back in the Premier Division and the near disaster of the Rhodes Avenue sale and ground sharing were fading in the memory. On Tuesday 14th January 2003, Martin Hayes team travelled to Tring in the semi-final of the Herts Charity Cup and recorded the Clubs best ever win in a competitive match away from home with a 9-1 victory. Blues fortune in that Cup continued as Hemel Hempstead Town were defeated 3-1 in the May final and Captain Rob French lifted Blues first silverware for 6 years. Back in February, the club had sold star striker Vinnie John to Hornchurch FC for a club record fee and in March amongst much publicity, ex Arsenal striker and Liberian International Christopher Wreh signed to play at Woodside Park. The Club
ended that season in a respectable 13th place, but Wreh made only one appearance, scoring on his debut in a 4-0 win at Hendon in front of the Sky Sports cameras. 2003/04 saw the restructure of the football pyramid with the top 12 teams from the Ryman Premier (after champions Canvey Island) joining DML counterparts in a new Conference League with 2 first divisions, North and where Stortford would compete if they qualified, South. The battle for the top half of the table added spice to the campaign and manager Martin Hayes duly added strength to his team. The first round proper of the FA Cup was achieved and a tie away at Nationwide League Club Mansfield Town. 600 travelling fans saw their team lose 6-0. In April, exactly 30 years to the day that Blues won the last ever Amateur Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Stortford retained the Herts Charity Cup by defeating Cheshunt 4-1 to match that Wembley score line. A ‘promotion’ place had already been secured as Blues won 2-0 at Hitchin on the April bank holiday Monday. The last game of the season saw tearful scenes as the fans said goodbye to midfield supremo, inveterate goal scorer and triple winner of the player of the season trophy, Glen Southam. His £20,000 fee to Dagenham & Redbridge set a new Club record. A brave new world opened for Blues in August 2004 as they kicked off their Conference South campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Eastbourne Borough. It was a journey into the unknown with league trips as far afield as Weymouth and Newport but Blues held their own in the autumn with a position on the fringe of the play offs. There was a disappointing early FA Cup defeat by Hayes but FA Trophy wins against Kingstonian and Lewes saw Stortford through to the 3rd Round in the New Year. There were echoes of 1981 as Blues beat Dagenham, Canvey Island and Gravesend from the Conference National to reach a semi-final against Hucknall Town. In the meantime league wins against
Dorchester and Cambridge City kept Blues play off hopes alive. Both semi-final games against Hucknall were lost narrowly to dash hopes of an FA Trophy Final return and fatigue eventually ended the play off hopes in the penultimate game of the season at Eastbourne, the day before the Herts Charity Cup Final was lost. A final placing of 10th was very satisfactory in the end and dispelled doubts about how Blues would manage the loss of Glen Southam. By contrast the 2005-06 season was a disappointment and yet it ended with a trophy. Eastbourne were the first visitors again and the game summed up how the season would go – a frustrating 1-0 defeat. Major injury problems and suspensions to key players helped to cause inconsistent form for Blues, as well as bad luck. This was epitomised in the 3-0 defeat at home to Lewes in November when the visitors had only 2 shots on target all game. Shortly afterwards Blues demolished Histon 5-0. This didn’t kick start the campaign though and after going out of the FA Cup at Hayes again and the FA Trophy at Exeter all that was left apparently was a relegation struggle. However a 10 game unbeaten league run in the New Year banished fears of relegation and at the same time Blues won through to the Herts Senior Cup Final. The Cup was won for the first time in 20 years with a 1-0 win over Stevenage and the season was rounded off with a record Woodside Park league crowd of 1,016 as champions elect Weymouth visited. The Blues’ leading goal scorer at this time was Steve Morison who went on to play in the Premiership for Norwich City. In 2006-07 the club flirted with promotion to the National Conference, the top echelon of non-league football. A top-six league finish led to a play-off semi final against Salisbury City. The home leg, played in front of 1049 spectators ended in a 1-1 draw with Greg Pearson scoring for Stortford. Back at Salisbury,
the score was again 1-1 after 90 minutes. But two extra time goals saw Salisbury march to the final and the Conference. The FA Cup first round was reached, but Blues fell by five goals to three at Woodside to Kings Lynn - the attendance, 1,750.The following season saw a second successive promotion bid. But this time Blues faded away on the run-in, falling from 5th to 10th in six winless matches. A highlight was an FA Trophy second round appearance against Halifax Town. Blues’ illustrious opposition were somewhat fortunate to take the tie to a replay, but made no mistake in 4-1 demolition of Blues’ Wembley hopes. 2008-2009 season saw Martin Hayes record 500 games and 10 years in the job. However, a shoestring budget and poor results led to his surprise dismissal and the promotion of reserve team manager, Mark Simpson assisted by Gordon Boateng. The new management team rung the changes and Stortford rallied to move from 20th in the league table to finish 9th. Mark Simpson remained at the helm until February 2011 during which time, in season 2009/10, Stortford again won the County Senior Cup. Simpson was replaced by ex England and Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker. He and his Coach, Fraser Skimming managed to save the Blues from relegation at the end of the 2010/11 campaign when 3 wins in the last 3 fixtures kept the Club above the drop zone. In addition the County Charity Cup was won. Ian Walker’s stint in charge lasted until early in December 2011 when he left by mutual consent and Rod Stringer took over as Manager. Under the former Braintree boss, the Bishops finished in 10th and 17th positions in their two seasons in the Blue Square Bet North Division. In addition the Blues did the “double” of winning both the County Senior Cup and Charity Cup in the The 2014/2015 campaign was not a great one for the Blues but after some inconsistent form up until
the last few months of the season they improved to steer clear of the relegation zone to ensure another year as a member of the Vanarama National South. Rod Stringer resigned as Manager after four and a half seasons at the end of the 2015/16 campaign to take charge of Chelmsford City. That season saw the Blues again finish around midway in the League table and win the Herts Charity Cup. Striker Elliott Buchanan was the top goalscorer in the league and won the Vanarama Conference “Golden Boot” award. The 2016/17 season was a disaster for the Club and probably the worst in the history finishing in the second-from-bottom place to be relegated to the Evo Stik Southern League after 13 seasons in the Conference set-up. Stortford had two management teams running affairs before ex Spurs, Swindon, Rotherham United, Reading and Colchester United midfielder Kevin Watson was appointed manager late in the season. Stortford did reach the County Cup Final but lost 2-1 to Hitchin Town. With a young squad Kevin Watson took the Blues to 18th place in the 2017/18 campaign with their best performances against Slough Town collecting four points against the Rebels who were eventually promoted into the Vanarama National League South via the play-offs. Watson left the club at the end of the season with Adam Flint, from Witham Town, stepping into the manager’s shoes for the 2018/19 term. PLAYER PROFILES CALUM KITSCHA – Goalkeeper Calum was signed by Stortford towards the end of February and made his debut in the home fixture against Frome Town. The Blues were Calum’s first senior club as he was in the Community club set-up before playing a number of matches for the reserve side in the Capital League in the 2010/11 season. He then joined Histon, in the National League South, and was with the Cambridge side for
three seasons clocking up over 60 appearances. Calum then joined Hayes & Yeading also in the National South at the start of the 2014/15 term. In October 2014 Calum made his one appearance for the England C national side when he played in a 2-0 defeat by Turkey in Istanbul. In July 2015 he joined National League side Cheltenham Town and made his debut for them in a FA Trophy tie against Chelmsford City. After helping the Robins gain promotion into the EFL Calum signed a new one-year deal in June 2016 and made his Football League debut during an EFL Trophy tie against Blackpool. Whilst at Cheltenham he had a spell on loan at Worcester City. He left Cheltenham at the end of the 2016/17 term upon the expiry of his contract and signed for Welling United in November. Before joining Stortford he played a few games for Hoddesdon Town in the Spartan South Midland League. By the end of last season Calum had made 13 appearances for the Blues. BOBBY MASON - Goalkeeper Bobby signed this summer from Witham Town where he kept 12 clean sheets in 35 appearances last season, his steady performances saw him pick up the Supporters Player of the Year award despite only joining in October. 27 year old Bobby was previously number one for Thurrock when they won promotion to the Bostik Premier two seasons ago, and has also spent time at Hullbridge Sports in the Essex Senior League. CHAD CRUSE - Defender Signed on senior forms in January when Chad was in his second year at the Blues Academy setup. In the first year he played in midfield but last season he was successfully playing in the left back role. He was called up for the first team for the home fixture versus Banbury United last season and was an unused substitute in that match and then made his debut away at Hereford when he was in the starting line-up.
Chad went on to make 5 senior appearances for Stortford by the conclusion of last season. MAX BRASSINGTON – Defender Max made his senior debut for Stortford in a Herts Senior Cup tie away at Hitchin Town last December. He had earlier last season played in every tie of the under 18s great run in the FA Youth Cup. Max spent seven years in the Colchester United youth setup and also a spell in Cambridge United’s youth set-up. By the end of last season Max had made 11 first team appearances. CHRIS GREGAN – Defender Chris, who can play in midfield as well as defence, was signed on dual registration forms at the start of the season, his other club being Chelmsford City. He originally played for the Clarets under18 side. He was awarded a diploma to attend the Hartpury College, the number one sports college in the UK, a few years ago. Based in Gloucester, Chris played for Gloucester City, Frome Town and Yate Town during his time in the West Country. He made his Blues debut in the opening league match at home to Dorking Wanderers. SAM ROBBINS - Defender 25 year-old Sam joined Stortford from Waltham Abbey in the summer. Sam began his career at Wingate & Finchley before moving on to the Abbotts. He spent the last three seasons at Waltham Abbey playing well over 100 games, mainly in central defence where his superb reading of the game, speed and tenacious attitude caught the eye of the management. Sam made his Stortford debut in a Herts County Charity Cup tie against Hitchin Town in early August. ELLIOT WRIGHT - Defender 21 year-old Elliot Wright has superb pedigree, he spent over ten years at Arsenal before leaving two years ago. Elliot also represented England at U17 level and has even clocked up 10.91 in the 100
metres Essex District final. After a year out of the game via a short injury plagued spell at Waltham Abbey, Elliot is looking to get his football career back on track and joined Stortford in the summer. DAMIEN GREEN – Defender Damien who joined in the summer, is a 26 year-old central defender who originally progressed through the youth set-up at Stortford. He played a few matches for Harlow Town in the 2009/10 season when still only 17 years old. He then played for Heybridge Swifts. A strong, tall and extremely quick defender, Damien finds himself back at his local club after spells at Chelmsford City, Witham Town and most recently Ware. TOIB ADEYEMI – Defender 23 year-old Toib joined Stortford in August after starting the preseason with National League side Braintree Town with whom he played one pre-season match. Originally played in Charlton Athletic’s youth age group set-up. He then had spells at Dulwich Hamlet, Redbridge and Sporting Bengal before playing for Barking in the Bostik Division 1 North last season. Toib made his Stortford debut in a Herts County Charity Cup tie in August against Hitchin Town. MARCUS CROWTHER – Defender Only 17 in July, Marcus signed for the first team last October on the back of some excellent performances with the youth team in the FA Youth Cup that took them through to the 2nd Round proper of the competition. He made his 1st team debut as a substitute in a 4-0 win against Hanwell Town in the FA Trophy and by the end of the season had made 5 appearances in the senior side. LEWIS DARK – Midfielder 29 year-old Lewis joined in the summer from Heybridge Swifts having captained them for the majority of last season, marshalling them to the FA Cup 1st Round and FA Trophy 2nd
Round as well at the play-offs. A combative and efficient midfield player with high work ethic and superb leadership qualities, Lewis began his career in the academy at Tottenham Hotspur before joining the Centre of Excellence at Brentford. He made his debut for the Bees against Doncaster Rovers in April 2007 and made 3 Football League appearances in total before dropping into non league, spending time at Stansted, Redbridge, Maldon & Tiptree, Grays and Thamesmead amongst others. Lewis made his Blues debut on the opening day of the league season in the home match versus Dorking Wanderers. ELLIOTT RONTO – Midfielder 23 year-old midfielder Elliott has returned to the club for the second time after a superb season at Witham Town in the Bostik Division 1 North. The Aussie playmaker notched ten goals and nineteen assists from central midfield last season, earning him the Manager’s Player of the Year Award for Witham. A former Australian under18 international Elliott began his career with former A League club Gold Coast United before moving to England and joining Witham two years ago. Elliott was with the Blues in the 2016/17 term making his Stortford debut away at Eastbourne Borough in October 2016. He made 22 appearances and notched two goals in that earlier time with the Blues RYAN CHARLES – Midfielder 22 year-old Ryan arrived at the Prokit (UK) Stadium from Canvey Island. He is a skilful wide-man capable of scoring spectacular goals from distance. Nicknamed ‘Spider’ - Ryan bagged 10 goals for the Gulls last season including the winner in the Play Off SemiFinal against Bowers & Pisea. Ryan’s previous clubs include Ipswich Town, Needham Market, Witham Town and Stanway Rovers. His Blues debut was as a substitute against Hitchin Town in a Herts County Charity Cup tie in August.
ISAAC NKOSI – Defender/ Midfielder Signed in August, Isaac made his Stortford debut coming on as a substitute in the away match at Bognor Regis Town the same month. As a youngster he was involved in the Charlton Athletic youth set-up before joining Woking’s Academy. Since then he has played in Enfield Town’s under 21 side and Walthamstow and Ilford in the Essex Senior League. JOHNVILLE RENEE – Defender/ Midfielder Johnville began his career at Leyton Orient before leaving for Stoke City at 15 years old. Johnville made his Stortford debut against Hitchin Town in a Herts County Charity Cup tie in August. JORDAN WESCOTT – Midfielder 22 year-old Jordan impressed in pre-season before the start of last season. Jordan made his Blues debut coming on as a substitute away at Tiverton Town in the first match of the 2017/18 campaign and scored his first goal netting a late equaliser against Farnborough in November. By the end of last season Jordan had made 49 appearances for Stortford and netted 3 goals. JACK THOMAS – Midfielder Jack spent two seasons with the Blues Academy set-up and gained valuable experience of senior football with Sawbridgeworth Town in the Essex Senior League in the 2016/17 season. He made his Blues first team debut in a Hertfordshire Charity Cup Semi-
Final tie against Hitchin Town last September and has been a major influence in the Blues midfield since then. Jack made 30 appearances for the Blues last term. FREDDIE OAKMAN – Midfielder Freddie is another member of the club’s under 18s squad that reached the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup last season. Freddie was signed on Evo Stik South forms in mid November and was an unused substitute against Farnborough that month. He made his first team debut when coming on as a substitute in a home match against Banbury United in January. He was struck by illness late in the season but had made 8 appearances by the end of the campaign. JAKE CASS - Forward 25 year-old Jake is a former midfield player turn striker, scoring a bundle of goals for Chalfont St Peter last season in the Evo Stik South-East Division. A strong powerful player who enjoys the physical side of the game, Jake is looking to make a name for himself back at this level after previous spells at Hendon and East Thurrock United earlier in his career. He has also played for AFC Hayes and Egham Town. He made his Stortford debut in August in the home fixture against Leatherhead when he helped his side to a draw with a late equaliser and found the net in his second match when scoring at Harlow Town. CHINEDU OSADEBE – Forward 19 year-old Chi joined Stortford in the summer from Witham Town, where he established himself as a regular last season after jumping up from the under18’s. A strong, quick player, there are high hopes Chi can fulfil his potential and progress with Stortford. He made his Blues debut in a Herts County Charity Cup tie versus Hitchin Town in August. ALFIE MASON – Striker Alfie was a member of the successful under 18s side that
fought their way through to play Colchester United in the 2nd round proper of the FA Youth last term. He scored twice in extra time when Stortford beat Boreham Wood in the 1st round. Alfie made his Blues senior debut when coming on as a substitute against Kings Langley in November. He had a short spell at Thurlow Nunn Eastern Leaguers Coggeshall Town in the early part of the New Year. He netted his first senior goal for Stortford when scoring against Slough Town in March. By the end of the season Alfie had made 19 appearances for Stortford and scored two goals. JAMIE CURETON – Striker A former Premiership striker, Jamie joined from Farnborough in January 2018 and made his Blues debut in the New Years Day fixture at home to Royston Town. In a long and varied career he started at Norwich City making his senior debut against Everton in November 1994 and scoring his first senior goal when finding the net versus Chelsea the next month. An England Youth International, he has gone on to play for Bristol Rovers, Reading, Queens Park Rangers, Swindon, Colchester United, Exeter City, Leyton Orient and Cheltenham Town and in nonleague Dagenham & Redbridge, Eastleigh and St Albans City as well as Farnborough. He was part of the England team that won the Veterans World Cup in in Thailand in June 2017 and he was the star performer scoring in every tie including the 2-0 Final victory over Iran. Jamie is employed as an Academy coach at the Arsenal with the under 15s and under 16s. Jamie scored his first goal for Stortford in a 1-1 draw at Weymouth in early January and finished with ten goals from twenty matches for the Blues last season. LEWIS BYRNE-HEWITT – Striker Signed at the beginning of the season, 21 year-old Lewis spent three years in the Norwich City youth set-up including playing for the Canaries under 18s and under
21s sides. After leaving Norwich he has had spells at Cheltenham Town, Billericay Town, Whyteleafe, VCD Athletic and Ware. TOYOSI OLUSANYA – Midfielder/Striker 20 year-old Toyosi joined the Blues in August making his debut in a Herts County Charity Cup tie and then made his league debut scoring the first goal in the 3-1 defeat of Harlow Town on August Bank Holiday Monday. He began his football career playing in youth soccer in South London and was soon spotted by AFC Wimbledon and was part of their side that had a great run in the FA Youth Cup in the 2015/16 season when they reached the 5th round before going out to Chelsea. He was rewarded with a professional deal in February 2016 and then made his debut for the Dons scoring in that match against Newport County from the penalty spot in May of that year. Toyosi had a loan spell with Kingstonian and after leaving Wimbledon he had spells with Walton Casuals and Fleet before playing for Gosport Borough at the end of last season. JORDAN LAWAL – Midfielder Jordan, 26 years-old, signed for the Blues in early September having previously played for Potters Bar Town at the start of this season and last season. His other previous clubs include Harrow Borough. Edgware Town, Northwood, AFC Hayes and Boreham Wood. Jordan made his Stortford debut in the home match against Folkestone Invicta. LANCE AKINS – Defender Lance was signed by Stortford in early September and made his debut coming on as a substitute in a home fixture against Folkestone Invicta. His previous clubs include Billericay Town, Whitton United, Witham Town and Coggeshall Town.
THERE’S a saying at NLP Towers – every day is Non-League Day! But Saturday, October 13 is actually proper Non-League Day as football comes together to celebrate all that is great about this level of the game. Now, anyone reading this will no doubt be familiar with NLD but hopefully there are new fans too only just discovering what Non-League football is all about. Conceived by QPR fan James Doe back in 2010, he wanted to spread the word after attending a NonLeague game himself. Since then, once a season on an international break, fans are encouraged to get out and watch their local club. Within five minutes of many front doors in the country, there is a decent game of football being played every weekend. Whether you are a fan of a club that has been relegated into Non-League or follow the team on your doorstep, we all have reasons for watching. Often people are surprised at the quality of players – something that shouldn’t be so accepted with the big successes of recent years like Jamie Vardy. There are so many great tales to be told. How about Dave Diaper at Sholing who has just completed 1,000 games at the club he took over in the Hampshire Premier League and took to Wembley glory in the FA Vase? As well as managing the team, he’s also helped run the club and led them up the Pyramid. Or, what about The NLP’s current Fan of the Year, James Beardwell? A die-hard Witham Town fan, he entertains us every week with his videos from games and passion for his team. Pop star Olly Murs even appeared in one of James’ vlogs recently when Witham took on Coggeshall Town, the Bostik club Murs is co-owner of. NLD isn’t about dumping the top level of the game, but about realising the football fix can also be found further down. Over the years we’ve seen all sorts of whacky ways to mark the occasion from fancy dress to ferret racing. Clubs will often offer free or reduced entry but Bungay Town even once handed out free mushrooms on the gate upon entry. This year will be no different as new fans try a different experience and mix with those of us who already love Non-League football. Part of the charm is the intimate atmosphere, the closeness to the players and, of course, the value for money. And this is a great chance for clubs to open their doors and show off. Prostate Cancer UK are once again heavily involved, with National League sponsors Vanarama looking to raise a sizeable sum for the charity. We’ll be promoting events in The NLP over the coming weeks but make sure you keep an eye out to see how clubs near you are planning to celebrate NonLeague Day. And if you have an idea yourself, why not let the club know? After all, getting involved is what makes Non-League so special. Just ask us at The NLP

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION
ST NEOTS TOWN U18 7 St Neots kicked off their home league programme with a very comfortable victory over league new boys Long Melford. With a slightly varied line up from the first match they looked more comfortable and balanced and they scored regularly against a side that posed little threat to their defence that was well marshalled by skipper Leon Fulianty. The feature was a welldeserved hat trick for Markel Cousins adding to the goal he scored in the first match. The hosts could not have had a better start scoring in their first attack after just 55 seconds. Jacob Joseph was the provider with a delightful through ball inside the full back and Markel Cousins powered past the last defender to shoot across visiting keeper Michael Bell. Daniel Harewood should have levelled the scores three minutes later when the home defence failed to pick him up, but he shot well wide with the goal at his mercy. After
LONG MELFORD 1
19 minutes Brad Brown was brought down in the area and Leon Fulianty doubled St Neots’ advantage from the penalty spot. Cousins could have added to the score, but the keeper saved bravely at his feet and then Melford scored against the run of play after 36 minutes when Callum Denson picked out James Burgess with Ash Brown getting his fingers to the shot but unable to stop the ball. However, St Neots found the perfect counter-punch less than a minute later when a delightful move involving Jacob Joseph and Cousins ended with the former making the score 3-1. Another goal a minute before the break really cemented St Neots’ superiority as Jake Wood netted from 25 yards. The second half saw Melford win a better share of possession, but they failed to create enough openings to test the St Neots defence. Around the hour St Neots increased their lead
when substitute Kyle Cathergood headed in a Wood corner. Logan Pigram cleared off the line after 73 minutes with his keeper beaten to deny Cousins, but the striker only had to wait a further five minutes to make up for that disappointment as he picked up a Kyle Rudland through ball to net from a narrow angle. The scoring was completed eight minutes from time when Cousins completed his hat trick to send Melford home still searching for their first points of the season.
St Neots: Brewer, Leagas, Rowland, Humble, Fulianty, Joseph, O’Hara, Cousins, Brown (B), Wood Subs used: Ford, Coppolaro, Rudland, Cathergood and Brown (J). Referee: Alex Setchell
