WELCOME Another point towards our battle for safety which, I’m pleased to say, looks like we might just win. Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League Southern Premier Division match. This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and of course, the travelling supporters of Cambridge City Football Club and we hope you all have an enjoyable stay here with us before safely heading back along the A428 later this evening. Saturday saw us play out an entertaining draw with team of the moment, Frome Town here at the PPS and in all honesty, we really should have been celebrating a three point haul instead of a share of the spoils. Remy Gordon, who has been like a new signing since his return from injury, scored two very good goals however some very uncharacteristic sloppy defending allowed the visitors to restore parity to the score line on two occasions. Easter Monday we were due to travel to Norfolk to take on Kings Lynn Town, however, Mother Nature had other ideas and the game was postponed due to the results of Hurricane Katy which had passed over the country, leaving the pitch waterlogged but the game was
hastily re-arranged and we travelled to the Walks Stadium on Wednesday evening and after going in one goal down at the break after soaking up a lot of home pressure, we eventually managed to get back on level terms, courtesy of a super free kick from Drew Roberts and maybe should have gone on and nicked all the points with a couple of chances not converted, however, another point towards our battle for safety which, I’m pleased to say, looks like we might just win. Moving away from the First Team briefly, I’d just like to say a massive well done to
all the players, coaches and parents, who represented the Academy and Scholarship at the Barcelona Cup out in Spain impeccably and I’m sure there will have been a million great memories created during their time out in Catalunya. Ok then, back to today, a local derby against a City side who will no doubt be wanting to gain revenge for our 4-1 victory at Westwood Road earlier this season so, as ever, get behind the lads please, you do make a difference. Easter proved to be a very eventful period for both of our sides for very different reasons. Cambridge travelled to Paulton on Easter Saturday and led 1-0 only for the match to be abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch and so face a daunting return midweek trip of nearly 400 miles on top of an already crowded fixture list. Our lads’ meantime earned a point from a 2-2 draw with the improving Frome Town whose ‘Great Escape’ from relegation this season is almost as memorable as the film of the same name. Then on to Easter Monday when Cambridge lost by a late goal to nil to play-off chasers Hitchin Town whilst we got as far as Downham Market towards our scheduled visit to Kings Lynn where the match referee called the match off because the pitch was waterlogged. As a result that match was rescheduled for last Wednesday evening (these notes completed on Tuesday) – the same night as Cambridge was due to entertain Stratford Town at St Ives. After that match Cambridge still have eight league and two cup matches still to fit in in the next 22 days starting this afternoon! Good luck with that. Like us Cambridge have spent much of the season at the wrong end of the league table and survival is the top aim for both of us. Therefore, the three points on offer today could be vital to both sides although the four matches in hand ‘enjoyed’ by our visitors should be more than enough to see them safely at Step Three next season.
CLUB HISTORY Cambridge City re-joined the Southern League in 2008/009 after an absence of five seasons. Previously, City had played there for 46 seasons from 1958/59 until a last day victory in 2003/04 confirmed the Club’s elevation to the newly formed Conference South Division.
EARLY YEARS The club was formed in 1908 as Cambridge Town, winning several titles and cups in its early years. Cambridge moved on to the Spartan League, winning three league titles between 1945-50. When Cambridge was granted City status in 1951, Town and Eastern Counties League neighbours Abbey United both applied to change their name to Cambridge City. Town’s application was first to arrive at the Cambs FA and was accepted, leaving Abbey United to change their name to Cambridge United. City finally left the amateur game in 1958 and joined the Southern League, gaining promotion in their first season at the expense of Cambridge United and going on to win the Premier Division in 1962/63, again edging out United in an enthralling title race. The absence of a pyramid system and automatic promotion put a lid on City’s ambitions. Nevertheless, City were regular challengers for the title and had the highest attendances in non-league football up until the mid-1960s. But City lost their way and were relegated to Southern League Division 1 in 1967-68. Promotion back to the Premier Division followed in 1969/70, but this was the same season Cambridge
United was elected to the Football League. City were left to reflect that, in 12 Southern League seasons together, they had finished above United in 8 of them. City went on to finish Southern League runners up in 1970/71, The period from1975-1985 was dreadful. Relegation in 1975/76 was followed by dwindling crowds and a Board decision in 1977 to return to amateur status by joining the Isthmian League. However, as in 2006, Directors were to find they could not ignore the views of City supporters. Protests forced out most of the Board and the club remained in the Southern League. City improved and a new generation of fans mobbed their heroes after the 1985/86 Southern League South championship was won on the last day of the season. City have reached the 1st round of the FA Cup five times and the 2nd round once since 1993 - this is a far better record than achieved by the more illustrious City sides of the 1960s. Manager Gary Roberts has stayed loyal to the club through its recent uncertainties and is now in his 9th season as manager. The enthusiastic fans of the ‘Shed’ made Milton Road one of the noisier grounds in Conference South. However, at the start of the 2013/14 season they were made homeless and entered in to ground share arrangement with former Conference neighbours Histon and after just two seasons moved again to share with St Ives Town who themselves had progressed to become members of the Southern League Division One Central.
GARY ROBERTS: Gary was appointed manager in January 2003. He previously took St.Albans from a relegation situation to promotion candidates and before that the same with Baldock Town. His playing career included over 200 games for Brentford and spells with Barnet, Maidstone and Welling in the Conference. In the early ‘90s he enjoyed a short time as a player at City . NEIL MIDGLEY (35): In summer 2013 Neil was appointed as first team coach. Neil is a product of Ipswich Town’s Academy but he made his name at Barnet where he scored freely. He moved on to Kettering Town via Canvey Island. Neil had a three month loan spell with City in 2006 before returning to Kettering for three weeks when he made the move to City permanent. Neil has made over 200 appearances for City. ZACHARY BARRETT (27): Zac is a goalkeeper who joined Luton Town at the age of 11 and progressed through their colts teams into their Academy.He earned a 3 year contract and was a regular in the reserve team through season 2006/07 but injury curtailed his appearances. He was released from his contract on financial grounds and signed for City in September 2008 and has been ever present since then until last season when he missed most of the season through injury . PAUL COOPER (23): Paul is a product of Bedford Town’s youth system and plays at right back. He progressed in to the Eagles first team before moving on to Ware until signing for city in January 2016. CHARLIE DAY (21): Charlie is a product of Histon’s Scholarship programme and made his 1st team debut at the age of 17 and has gone one to make over 50 appearances at leftback or midfield. He signed for City in summer 2014. DURAN REYNOLDS (25): Duran can play either leftback or centreback or midfield and is a product of Histon’s Academy. He has previously played for Barrow, Dagenham & Redbridge and Boston United.
LEE CHAFFEY (31): Lee is a centreback/leftback signed by City after being released by Ipswich Town after five years in the Portman Road Academy. Lee, now in his twelfth season at City, played initially at leftback before forming a formidable central partnership initially with Glen Fuff and latterly Dave Theobald. Lee is also the teams emergency goalkeeper. ADAM MURRAY (26): Adam is a centrehalf signed from Mildenhall Town early last season. He was widely regarded as the best centrehalf in The Thurlow Nunn League at the time .and soon justified that status with strong performances for City. STUART PEARSON (26): Stuart is on a months loan from Hitchin Town. He can play anywhere across the back or midfield . He has previous experience with Paulton Rovers and Swindon Supermarine. MARTIN STANDEN (32): Martin can play centreback or centre midfield. He was a member of Royston Town’s squad that got promotion to the Southern League. BUSTER HARRADINE (30): Buster joined City in the summer of 2014 after two successful seasons with Soham Town Rangers where he scored freely. Buster plays on either wing or centre midfield and prior to his spell at Soham, he plied his trade with several county league clubs. Buster was voted supporters player of the year last season. ALEX SERRANO (26 ): Spanish born Alejandro was previously with AD Colmenar Viejo in the Spanish league. Alex plays in centre or right midfield and showed great promise in his summer trial at City. DANNY KELLY (25): Danny signed for City in August 2011 having previously played for Eastbourne Boro, Dover Athletic and Barnet. Danny scored freely in this spell including two hattricks in consecutive matches .Unfortunately for City, Danny decided to give life a chance in Australia. On his return to England in March 2014, he had no hesitation in rejoining City and helped the team to a playoff place the following season.
IEUAN LEWIS (27): Ieuan was signed from Hitchin Town in October 2012 after making 200 appearances for the Hertfordshire club. He is equally at home on right or left of midfield and has played many times at rightback for City. Ieuan played for Arlesey Town and Stevenage Town before Hitchin. JON KAYE (21): Jon is a local lad who had a short spell with City 3 seasons ago before going off to Bath University. He rejoined City last season initially for the reserves but soon found himself in the first team squad. Jon is a rightsided midfielder or rightback. CHARLIE BROWN (20): Charlie is a product of Cambridge United’s academy and plays in midfield. He has been plying his trade this season for Hardwick in The Kershaw League . RYAN AUGER (22): Ryan is a born and bred Cambridge lad who learned his footballing trade in Southend United’s Academy before earning himself a two year contract. He is a midfielder and played for Bishops Stortford and Histon since leaving Southend. JOEL NORRIS (25): Joel has been a prolific scorer in lower leagues, scoring 76 goals in 84 matches for Welwyn Garden City before signing for Bedford town and continuing his form in the early stages of this season. KAAN FEHMI (28): Kaan has been a long term target of manager Gary Roberts who finally got his man in early December this season when Kaan decided to transfer to City from Royston Town where he had had five successful seasons. He won the league’s Golden Boot in 2012. JAMES HALL (26): James signed for City in early February after banging in 25 goals in 24 appearances for Godmanchester Rovers. James was previously prolific for his home town club St Ives Town after impressing for Godmanchester previously . CHARLIE WOOLFE (18): Charlie is a member of City’s successful youth team who made it through to 1st Round Proper of The FA youth Cup this season. Charlie is an exciting prospect with an eye for goal.

A brief round up of the recent results from the teams that matter Premier Division Good Friday and Easter Saturday Action On Friday, Hitchin Town struck eleven minutes from time to move up to third in the table with a 1-0 home victory over Weymouth who remain three points shy of the play-off places. On Saturday, leaders Redditch United recovered from going behind after just three minutes to win 4-1 at home against bottom of the table Bideford, a victory which took them four points clear of Poole Town who, having trailed at the interval, lost 2-1 at home when Stratford Town scored three minutes after the home side had levelled midway through the second half while fourth placed Leamington, a goal down at the break and trailing by two soon after the hour mark, scored twice in the final seventeen minutes to share a 2-2 home draw with Chippenham Town who moved into fifth place replacing Hungerford Town who, after being a goal ahead at half time, went down 3-2 at home when Dunstable Town struck two minutes from time. Kettering Town stayed in touch with the leading pack when a goal just after the hour mark secured a 1-0 home win over Slough Town but Kings Lynn Town lost ground when hosts Chesham United scored twice in the first half to win 2-0 while Biggleswade Town converted a penalty after half an hour to win 1-0 at Dorchester Town and Merthyr Town scored twice in the final twenty minutes to win 2-0 at Histon, leaving the home side five points from safety. Cirencester Town, trailing to an own goal at the interval and two behind midway through the second half, drew level with two goals in six minutes but second from bottom Bedworth United
snatched a 3-2 away win in time added on while Frome Town made it seven games without defeat when they twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at St Neots Town.
Division One Central Good Friday and Easter Saturday Action Royston Town, two goals up at the interval, completed a comfortable 4-0 win at second from bottom Aylesbury United to move into top spot, replacing Kings Langley who were held 1-1 at home by Godalming Town while third placed Egham Town, who had gone ahead ten minutes after the break, conceded a penalty just after the hour and lost 2-1 at Ware when the hosts struck in the third minute of time added on and fourth in the table St Ives Town, two down at the interval and trailing by four with fifteen minutes remaining, lost 4-2 at home to Chalfont St Peter who moved up to sixth where they replaced Aylesbury who had twice come from behind before losing 3-2 at Petersfield Town. Fifth in the table AFC Rushden & Diamonds were held to a 0-0 home draw by Northwood, making it five games without a win for the former table leaders, while Beaconsfield SYCOB, ahead after five minutes and two up at the interval, completed a comfortable 5-0 home victory over bottom of the table North Greenford United but Potters Bar Town lost 1-0 at home when third bottom Leighton Town scored just before the midway point of the second half. Bedford Town took the lead at Fleet Town three minutes into the second half but the home side secured a 1-1 draw with a strike two minutes from time while Barton Rovers, two ahead at the midway point of the second half, conceded a penalty
four minutes from time and had to settle for a 2-2 home draw when Uxbridge struck again with a minute remaining and, in the day’s other game, Arlesey Town scored three times in the second half to inflict a 3-0 home defeat on Hanwell Town.
Premier Division Easter Monday Action Leaders Redditch United took the lead just after the half hour but hosts Merthyr Town equalised two minutes later and went in front before the interval to secure a 2-1 home win leaving second placed Poole Town to narrow the gap to one point when a strike eight minutes before half time gave them a 1-0 victory at Weymouth while third in the table Hitchin Town, reduced to ten men in the opening twenty minutes, struck six minutes from time to snatch a 1-0 success at Cambridge City. Fourth in the table Leamington converted a third minute penalty which proved enough to give them a 1-0 win at Stratford Town while Cirencester Town struck in the fifth minute of time added on to win 1-0 at Chippenham Town who lost their place in the top five when Hungerford Town scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 victory at Slough Town while Biggleswade Town twice took the lead in the first half to set up a 2-1 home win over relegation threatened Histon. Frome Town scored a minute from time to continue their unbeaten charge away from the relegation zone with a 1-0 home win over Paulton Rovers, leaving the visitors still ten points from safety but five points ahead of bottom of the table Bideford who, despite having scored near to half time after going behind after just ten minutes, slipped to a 3-2 home defeat by Dorchester Town.

Player/manager Steve Kuhne has scored more than 300 UCL goals – more than half of them for St Neots – but he has seldom had a better afternoon than he had last Saturday when he rewrote the record books. He scored all four St Neots goals in their 4-1 victory over Ford Sports to lift his tally for the season to 42 in league and Cup, and also taking him to his highest individual tally for a season and the highest number scored for St Neots in a season since their return to senior football in 1995. It was the first time he has scored four in a match for the club and there are still at least eleven matches left for those figures to be further improved. He achieved it without the support of his regular strike twin Gary Walker who was unwell and this let in 17 years old Sean Murray for his first senior start and although he did not score he can be proud of his first showing full of enthusiasm and strength. There was a gale blowing down the pitch at the start of the game and St Neots found themselves kicking against it. As a consequence, Fords enjoyed early possession and after eight minutes as the St Neots defence waited for an offside flag Dave Bond let fly with a volley that rebounded from a post. Three minutes later the

visitors went ahead with a fluke goal as visiting player/manager Shane Geary floated in a long lob that Steve Young seemed to misjudge and the ball sneaked in at his near post. Those two early efforts were the sum total of Fords first half attempts on goal and then St Neots settled down to dominate. Kuhne had the ball in the net after 16 minutes rules out by an offside flag and within two minutes he could not believe his bad luck when a header from a Matt Endersby corner beat the keeper but rebounded from a post. Sean Murray then wasted his best chance of the game shooting wide after being played clear by Kuhne but St Neots did not have to wait much longer for their threatened equaliser. After 26 minutes from another teasing Endersby corner Steve Kuhne swivelled to volley the ball into the net and only a world-class reflex save by Roger Leeson prevented his from doubling his tally. Cameron Clark should have scored but fired wildly over the bar but a minute before the break St Neots did get the half time lead as Jon Hoggett had a shot blocked on the line but he chased out wide to retrieve the ball and cross for Kuhne to add to his tally with a full length diving header. The game took a strange twist after the break, as St Neots seemed to lose their impetus. For a spell there was a lack of
goalmouth incident and Fords sent on all three substitutes in a bid to boost their efforts. However, after 66 minutes Kuhne was felled by Ian Giles in the area and he climbed to his feet to sent Leeson the wrong way from the spot to complete his hat trick. Jon Hoggett then went close with a header as St Neots regained the initiative and the victory was completed seven minutes from time with the award of a second penalty kick when substitute Mark Franklin was tripped. There was little surprise when Kuhne ‘volunteered’ to take the spot kick before trotting off for a welldeserved early bath. It was only left to Franklin to fail to score in an empty net in the final minute with the Fords defence absent.

A Gordon brace not enough as the points are shared With Histon beaten a win for either side might have gone a long way to ensuring survival at Step Three next season but in the event a draw was a fair result to a hard fought encounter and with five matches left both look likely to have earned a further Premier Division season. St Neots led twice but each time they were pegged back by the in-form fighting Frome side that has now suffered just one league defeat in their last thirteen outings. St Neots were grateful to Remy Gordon who followed up his goal at Frome ten days ago with a brace in this match and he is beginning to have a major influence on the side after missing much of the season recovering from a broken leg. There was just one change in the St Neots starting line-up with fit again George Casey replacing Jamie Anton at right back. The match got off to a great start for St Neots when they went ahead after just four minutes. Lee Clarke burst into the area and looked to have been brought down but as St Neots appealed for a penalty and Frome appeared to freeze the ball broke loose and Remy Gordon sent the perfectly placed shot beyond Darren Chitty and inside the far post. In the next ten minutes St Neots were twice unlucky not to at least double their lead. After 12 minutes Lee
Clarke threaded a pass inside the final defender and Drew Roberts saw his carefully placed shot blocked by the keeper’s legs and two minutes later the same St Neots player sent over a wickedly inswinging corner that beat Chitty but rebounded from the crossbar. Frome gradually began to create chances themselves and after Mitchell Page had miskicked in front of goal they levelled after 20 minutes when the St Neots defence went missing and from a hopeful cross Darren Jefferies was left in space to head home from close range. A mistimed tackle by St Neots skipper Adam Tann on Jon Davies saw both players booked although the Frome player looked fortunate not to suffer more serious punishment for his retaliation. Tom Ward was penalised for a push on the edge of the St Neots area but George Miller’s free kick sailed harmlessly over the bar and then after good work by Mitchell Page a Rob Hobbs shot was deflected wide by Danny Burns. Two minutes before the break Lee Clarke presented Roberts with another chance but his effort beat the keeper’s dive but trickled the wrong side of the far post. St Neots suffered a 57th minute scare when Alex Archer was penalised for carrying the ball outside his penalty area. He was booked but Dan Cleverley sent his free kick over the bar. The wind was increasing in strength and
playing against the conditions St Neots were struggling to clear their lines but after 63 minutes a sweeping move almost the full length of the field saw the home side regain the lead. Remy Gordon won the ball deep inside his own half picking out Lee Clarke and continuing his forward run to take a return pass and beat the keeper with a clinical finish. This time however, the lead only lasted for four minutes before a Jon Davies cross was won the air by Mitchell Page who headed wide of Archer to level the scores again. St Neots sent on substitutes Jordan Brown and Peter Clark and the last twenty minutes was played end to end with both sides having chances to seal a victory. A surging forward run by Brett Longden set himself up but his shot was deflected wide and then substitute Jordan Brown jinked along the bye line before seeing his narrow angled shot also rebound off a defender for another corner. Frome might have snatched a winner themselves but Archer saved with his feet after Davies broke through and then two efforts from distance were both sent high over the bar as St Neots back peddled. Four minutes from time the unlucky Roberts saw his shot saved a full stretch by Chitty and then substitute Peter Clark saw his shot blocked. So each side took a point and perhaps more importantly deprived their opponents from picking up two more!

The last few games have seen some positive results that hopefully have gone some considerable way to insuring we will be playing at Step3 next season. Staying in this division (or at the very least this step in the pyramid) is of paramount importance to the ongoing “off the field” developments we have already got in place and doubly important for those new initiatives that will come to fruition as we gleefully plod though next’s season trials and tribulations. I of course say trials and tribulations with my tongue firmly pressed against the inside of my mouth however this “tongue position” is only to prevent me from shouting out my own views on what has been a particularly difficult and somewhat TOM MEECHAN unspectacular season.

Please remember that the First Team is the pinnacle of what is quickly becoming a very busy football club and your matchday support is fundamental to us bringing this whole shooting match together. We all need to take stock of what has just passed and get the blood pumping for what is to come next season on the pitch and off the pitch. IT was an extremely good Good Friday for Folkestone Invicta as they wrapped up the Ryman South title and it looks like there will be plenty of drama to come as clubs up and down the country fight for promotion. Invicta did it in style, thrashing poor Walton & Hersham 6-0 at the Fullicks Stadium in front of a bumper crowd of over 1,500 to become the first club from Steps 1-4 to be named champions. It’s hard not to be pleased (unless you support one of their Ryman South rivals!) for a club that has stumbled in the play-offs the previous four years. The fact they lost the previous two finals show they’ve been among the best in the league for some time now and boss Neil Cugley finally got his squad over the line. Cugley and chairman Jim Pellatt led the club out of a Company Voluntary Arrangement which threatened the club’s very existence but no doubt Friday was payback enough for all of their hard work. Chief Pellatt said: “It was probably three years or so of ‘will we survive?’ And we were still really struggling. “Suddenly the work you’ve put in during those three years seems to come to fruition.” Skipper Liam Friend, who was part of the last Folkestone side to win promotion back in 2009-10, added: “It’s been a long process, being here so many years, getting relegated and the going into the play-offs.
“It feels amazing. It was a relief to get my hands on the trophy, knowing I haven’t got to play in the play-offs!” AFC Sudbury and Warrington Town look likely to follow Invicta as the next to have their names engraved as champions. The Yellows were 11 points clear atop the Ryman North at the time of writing with just five games left while Warrington - who have scored over 100 league goals this term - are 12 ahead with the same amount of matches remaining in the Evo-Stik NPL North. Apart from those two, the rest of the divisions from Steps 1-4 could go right down to the wire which is great news for the neutral and not so good news for fans of the clubs involved! It’s a Gloucestershire throwdown in the National League between Cheltenham Town and Forest Green Rovers and with just two points separating them,the final month of the season is going to be massive. Solihull Moors are firmly in the driving seat in National League North with North Ferriby and AFC Fylde challenging but in the South, it could go any of three ways. Long-time leaders Ebbsfleet United have struggled as of late while Maidstone United and Sutton United have crept up behind them. Both clubs can overtake the Fleet if they win their games in hand but with the pressure ramped up at this stage of the season, who knows what will happen?
Darlington 1883 and Blyth Spartans are battling it out to see where in the north east the Evo-Stik NPL Premier title will be heading - with the former having three games in hand. The other two Step 3 divisions are also up for grabs as Hampton & Richmond Borough and East Thurrock United sit in the top two positions in the Ryman Premier. FA Trophy semi-finalists Bognor Regis Town have five games in hand but will their crowded schedule get the better of them? Redditch United lead the way in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier but with arguably six teams still having a shot at the title, it’s sure to be an enthralling end to the campaign. Stafford Rangers’ recent dip in form, meanwhile, has allowed Shaw Lane Aquaforce into the champions’ conversation in Evo-Stik NPL South. In the Evo-Stik Southern Central, Royston Town are in pole position but Kings Langley, Egham Town and St Ives Town are still in with a shot while the South & West division looks to be a shootout between Banbury United, Cinderford Town and Taunton Town. We’ve always said that there’s plenty of entertainment in Non-League football and the month of April is shaping up to be quite something!
