StNeotsarrested asequence offourmatcheswithoutavictory –the worstrun under the tenure of Manager David Batch – with a confident and well deserved victoryoverneighboursCambridgeCityattheirsharedhomewithStIvesTown. The victory was revenge for a Red Insure Cup penalty shoot-out defeat by City just two weeks earlier and buried a bit of a bogey for this was only St Neots’ second victory over Gary Roberts’ side in eight meetings since joining the Southern League. The match was also significant for featuring Drew Roberts’ first goal since 25th April as he eases himself gradually back to match fitness and it was St Neots first away league victory since they won at Paulton on 10th October. Undefeated at home in the league since September, City started as favourites but after a good start they faltered after the break and were incommoded by the reduction to ten men when John Kyriacou was dismissed for a rash tackle after 65 minutes. St Neots now face a further three away leaguematchesbeforehostingHistononDecember8th.
There could hardly have been a worse start for the visitors’ for in City’s first attack in the third minutes Brett Langdon was judged to have tripped Ieuan Lewis and Josh Dawkin confidently stroked home the resultant penalty kick. The home side looking slick and confident next mounted a flowing move from which Joel Norris wastefully shot across the face of goal and then Danny Kelly failed to score from close range after good work by Norris. St Neots settled after repelling these early attacks and were level after 20 minutes when Tom Meechan was brought down twenty yards from goal by Lee Chaffey and Ryan Hawkins delightful chip over the defensive wall left Zac Barrett helpless. Ten minutes later Norris did get the ball in the net from a Buster Harradine cross but was ruled offside and St Neots varied their approach by pushing the lively HawkinsupfrontwithDrewRobertsmovingbackinmidfield. Just when a first half stalemate looked on the cards St Neots snatched the lead sixty seconds into added time when Roberts produced a well-placed bullet header to a Jamie Antoncross.

City needed a quick response after the break but fortune went the other way when Barrett brought Meechan down as he bore down on goal and Meechan climbed to his feet to confidently despatch the penalty kick to extend St Neots lead. This third goal seemed to breathe confidence lacking for so long into the visiting side. With Matt Mitchel-King moved back into defence they looked sure at the back and menacing in attack as first Isaac Galliford and then Ryan Hawkins shot just wide of the target. City introduced substitutes to freshen theirapproachwithlittlenoticeablesuccessandStNeotswentclosetofurther extending their lead when Shane Blackett headed narrowly wide from a Galliford corner. Then after 65 minutes Hawkins’ pace took him past Kyriacou ontheedgeofthepenaltyareaandthedefenderwasissuedwithastraightred card and from the resultant free kick Barrett produced the save of the match to deny Roberts a second goal. City seemed totally unable to regain any momentumafterthisandStNeotswereabletocoasttovictoryaddingafourth goal deep into added time when Isaac Galliford’s shot took enough of a deflection to beat Barrett to see St Neots retain their record as the second highestgoalscorersintheDivision.

A special welcome for the players, officials, and supporters of Corby Town who visit us for the first time since their transfer to the Northern Premier League one season before we joined them there. The match report (our most recent meeting) elsewhere in the programme is dated January 2020 and we were also due to meet our visitors in the league the following season but both scheduled meetings fell victim of the COVID cancellations. So, in summary Corby are undefeated in the league here at The Premier Plus Stadium in three appearances although their visit here five years ago in the FA Trophy resulted in a 3-2 victory for our lads with Dion Sembie-Ferris, Tom Meechan, and Liam McDevitt our marksmen. Last season Corby finished 15th in the league table following their transfer but this season they have shown a marked improvement and last week after a narrow 3 2 victory over high flying Boldmere St Michaels, thanks to a last-minutegoal,theystoodsixthintheleaguetablejustapointshyoftheplay-offzone. In the FA Cup they were beaten 1-0 at home by lower graded AFC Mansfield who are members of the UCL Premier Division North and in the FA Trophy they fared no better, beaten3 1awaybyLoughboroughDynamo(samescoreasourslastSaturday!).However, in the Northamptonshire Senior Cup they beat higher graded Brackley Town and Long Buckby to progress to the semi-finals due to be played in the new year. Their away record in the league this year is good with their only defeat coming at the hands of the thenleagueleadersHalesowenTown

Following two excellent home victories, St Neots were outplayed by league leaders Corby Town in their rearranged league match.Although the match was goalless at the break it only took Corby a few minutes after the break to forge ahead and St Neots could only point to the first twenty minutes and the last ten when they competed with any conviction. The victory propelled the visitors back to the top of the league table although displaced Berkhamsted have a game in hand and a superior goal difference, but this was a match in which the Northamptonshire side were determined to push home their advantage. Unusually after two unchanged startinglineups,BarryCorrmadefourteamchanges, twoofthenenforcedwithJoe Sutton unavailable, and playmaker Lee Simper injured but he also rested Stevan Shaw and Jonny Butler bringing in Sam Goode, Lee Watkins and Prince Mutswunguma and he also included teenager Jacob Joseph for just his second start sinceSeptember.
The start was disappointing with neither side imposing themselves. St Neots criticised for a slow start in their previous matches were out of the blocks quickly and they created the first real opening after eleven minutes when Lee Watkins ran at the defence, only to be brought down by a combination of two defenders and a penaltylookedpossiblebutthewell-placedofficialwavedplayon. Attheotherend Stephen Diggin was proving the main threat and his searching cross after 17 minutes found Jordan Crawford behind the St Neots defence but his fierce volley was too high. St Neots were beginning to be forced back after their bright start where they had shaded possession and as Corby grew in confidence leading scorer Elliott Sandy fired in from the edge of the area for Tom Dickens to clear off the goal line.JamesCliftontwicebrokeintotheboxfromtheleftandthesecondtimehewas impeded by Tom Boxer earning the St Neots skipper a yellow card. From the free kick on the edge of the box Jake Duffy’s free kick was deflected wide.Three minutes before the break, Jordan Crawford was left in too much space on the right and he crossed back to find Clifton at the back post whose effort was also deflected for a corner, fromwhichdefenderGaryMulliganfiredhighoverthebar.

St Neots Manager Barry Corr clearly had to vary his sides’ approach if they were to compete in the second half and he freshened up his side with two half time substitutionsreplacingJacobJosephandJoeNealwithReifClarkeandLewisFoster. The changes had hardly registered because just five minutes in Corby stuck with a quick break through the heart of the home defence, as Clifton skilfully set up the unmarked Steve Diggin to fire across the keeper for the opening goal. Tom Boxer wastheninjuredtobereplacedbyStevanShaw, sothehomesidehadutilisedtheir three permitted substitutes with almost forty minutes remaining. On the hour St Neots might have drawn level when Panny Boxer released Prince Mutswunguma beyond the visiting defence, but his finish was a foot too high and the opportunity squandered. After 66 minutes the impressive Lee Watkins wove his way into the penalty area and looked to be fouled but once again St Neots’ penalty appeals were rejected. A rising Clifton shot was palmed away by Iron for a corner after 73 minutes. Before it could be taken, Corby replaced Sandy with James Ireland and the substitute, on the pitch for around ten seconds, headed home Jake Duffy’s corner with his first touch to double Corby’s lead. That really was the killer blow although the visitors added a third goal nine minutes from time through Curtis Hartley. This stung St Neots into a late revival and although Sam Gomersall netted a consolation goal from the penalty spot after he had been brough down by a defender, the rally proved too little too late to have any meaningful effect on the outcome of the match.

NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE – MIDLANDS DIVISION
St Neots Town 1 Stamford 3
The moral of this encounter between two sides with seventeen places separating them in the league table: you rarely give away two goals and come back to win. This was, arguably, St Neots best performance at home this season but it was always going to be tough against a side that by 4-45 pm were top of the league table with former leaders Halesowen beaten at Coleshill Town. After gifting their visitors with two first half goals, St Neots kept plugging away and pulled a goal back but a stunning third goal for Stamford thirteen minutes from time sealed the outcome. It was again a much-changed line up that started for the Saints. Aaron Smith and Mamadou Jobe were both serving one-match bans and Declan Nche and Manny Osei were rested. With Toib Adeyemi reinstated to the defence alongside new signing Steve Sylvester, striker Brandon Njoku returned for his first start since the opening day of the season and Charlie Lewis was also back after missing nine of the last ten match through injury. It was a stunning start to the match as both sides were immediately on the offensive and St Neots created three excellent chances in the opening ten minutes. Trey Charles fired narrowly over the bar from a narrow angle, Brandon Njoku shot narrowly wide and then the same player set up Charles again only for his effort to be blocked by a defender. Meantime Stamford won two corners that were cleared and after a quarter of an hour Jake Duffy fired wide after being played clear by Harry Vince. The end-to-end action continued with Charles skilfully curling a shot around the defence to force a full-length parry by visiting keeper Ben Heath who then had to dive bravely at the feet of the same St Neots player to keep his goal intact. Then after 26 minutes a long throw by Connor Bartle eluded all the players in the six yards box and home keeper Jamie Greygoose had the misfortune to fumble the ball into his own net. The keeper atoned for his error with an acrobatic diving save to deny Ollie Brown-Hill and then at the other end Joe Rider had a shot blocked and Charles again tested Heath and the first half ended with the visiting keeper saving well from Njoku.

After 57 minutes St Neots gifted their visitors a second goal with no apparent danger threatening. A lengthy free kick by Joe Burgess went over a cluster of players the near post and beat Greygoose’s desperate dive to creep inside the far post and double Stamford’s lead. St Neots redoubled their efforts and took the game to their visitors who now seemed happy to sit on their advantage. In a reshuffled side with Declan Nche on for Lewis and Boxer back in defence, St Neots pressed forward and were quickly rewarded after 63 minutes when the lively TREY CHARLES claimed his eleventh league goal of the season in just sixteen starts to put his side back in contention. With thirteen minutes left just after Charles had tested Heath again, Stamford sealed their victory with the goal of the match. Following a corner only partially cleared, Connor Bartle hit a stunning drive through the packed area to give Greygoose no chance and his side all three points to take them to the top of the table. For St Neots it was another home defeat but a much-improved performance suggesting that improvement in results is not far away.

NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE – MIDLAND DIVISION
Loughborough Dynamo 3 St Neots Town 1
A penalty conceded in each half, proved St Neots downfall on their first ever visit to Loughborough Dynamo. There was no dispute about the second award – a goal that clinched the points after a St Neots comeback – but the first was a hotly disputed decision and agreed by home officials as a refereeing error. Lady Luck does seem to be hard on Pete Gill’s side at present because the overall performance was not bad and deserving of at least a share of the points. Once again it was a much-changed St Neots side that began the match with new signings Liam Hook and John-Paul Duncliffe making their debuts following their transfers from Yaxley. Full back Aaron Smith returned after his one match ban and Manny Osei returned to the side.Toib Adeyemi had departed from the club, Joe Tarpey and Marc Abbott were missing and Joe Rider started on the bench.
St Neots goalkeeper Jamie Greygoose was in early action saving bravely at the feet of Princewill Ogunmekan who had slipped the offside trap and then after a quarter of an hour Bastos went down under an innocuous challenge by Steve Sylvester and the Referee pointed to the penalty spot.St Neots protests were waved away, and Kevin Bastos netted from the penalty spot to put the home side ahead. Aaron Smith was then booked for a late challenge and St Neots problems multiplied when the home side scored an excellent second goal. The tricky Bastos went past his marker on the bye line and pulled the ball back to Jack Gibson who unmarked fifteen yards from goal produced an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. St Neots regrouped and tried to reply but their finishing was off target and the home keeper never tested. Greygoose then had to produce a brave save at the feet of Gibson after more clever play by Bastos and the first half ended with the St Neots keeper under pressure pushing away a fierce shot from the overlapping Brandon Webster. The second half began with a very contrasting pattern to the match. With Joe Rider on for the limping Brandon Njoku St Neots dominated play for the first 25 minutes and created several decent chances to get back on terms. Trey Charles had an early net-bound shot deflected for a corner, Charlie Lewis got above the home defence to head wide from a corner and in St Neots best move of the game Callum Anderson exchanged passes with Manny Osei to set up Charles whose shot passed the wrong side of a post with the keeper beaten after 54 minutes. Five minutes later the same combination of visiting players saw Osei set up Joe Rider and his crisp shot beat the home keeper to put the visitors firmly back in contention.

The score could haver been levelled but for a good save by home keeper Lewis King to deny Charles, and then the advantage seemed to shift as the home side hit back. After 70 minutes Bastos forced Greygoose into action once again and four minutes later a mistimed challenge by Lewis on Bastos conceded another penalty kick that the Loughborough man away tucked away to dent St Neots newly found confidence. St Neots tried to rally with all three permitted substitutes utilised, but that unfortunately conceded third goal was enough to see the home side inflict St Neots’ sixth defeat in their last seven outings. With Daventry Town winning at home St Neots are now further adrift of safety.

CORBY TOWN HISTORY
Corby Town Football Club were formed in 1948 and are the second club to represent the town, following Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, who were formed 13 years earlier in 1935. The club’s nickname ‘The Steelmen’ derives from the old steelworks that were in Corby.
The first chairman of the club was local MP William Montgomery, whilst Reg Smith was named the first manager. Smith had previously played for Millwall and Dundee whilst representing England at international level. Things started well for the newly formed Steelmen, winning their first game 5-1 against Wellingborough Town on 21 August 1948 at Occupation Road, which was home to Corby Town until the move to the Rockingham Triangle in 1985. It took the club only three years to win their first title, wrapping up the United Counties League in 1951 before doing the same again only a year later, with Ernie Middlemiss scoring a club record 135 goals in 136 games, a record that was to stand for 40 years. 1958 saw the introduction of floodlit football in Corby and in the same year the club moved from the Midland League to the Southern League.
The move to the Southern League looked to be a good one as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division in 1964, but promotion was gained the following year. The club made several unsuccessful applications to join the Football League, although they did receive one vote in 1966.
The club moved to the multi-purpose Rockingham Triangle venue in 1985 but it didn’t prove to be a lucky move as the Steelmen were once again relegated from the Premier Division in 1990. They didn’t spend long out of the Premier as they achieved a league and cup ‘double’ the following season.
The mid-90s saw a cash crisis at the club which threatened to put the club out of business, and although they were spared, relegation was to follow. The turn of the Millennium brought about more positivity at the Triangle as they consolidated their mid-table position in the Dr Martens League. More was to follow in 2005 as they just missed out on a play-off place under manager Rob Dunion. Dunion’s side went one better in 2006 as they were promoted once more.
Corby Town saw a change of ownership in 2007 as a new board made up of ex-Kettering Town chairman Peter Mallinger, David Dunham and Mick Leech and in 2009, under Graham Drury, the Steelmen won the Southern League title. The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a play-off spot during their first season in the Conference North.
OpponentSpotlight CORBYTOWNFC
Club chairman Peter Mallinger sadly passed away in January 2011, just months before the club’s new 3,000 capacity Steel Park stadium was due to open. His son David Mallinger took charge of the club and a positive start to life in their new home led the Steelmen into play-off contention and the First Round proper of the FA Cup, where they were beaten by Bristol Rovers at the half-way stage.
Sadly off-field issues had an effect on results and Corby only managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the 2011/12 season, with Graham Drury leaving the club at the end of the campaign.
In the summer of 2012, a Leicestershire businessman took control of the club, with Ian Sampson being installed as manager. However after a tough start to the season Sampson departed and was replaced by his assistant manager Chris Plummer. The former Peterborough Northern Star manager could not repeat the survival act of the previous year however, with Corby Town being relegated from the Blue Square North at the end of the season.
Plummer remained in charge of the side, however resigned just two games into the 2013/14 season after heavy defeats against Burnham and Hemel Hempstead Town. The Chairman moved to appoint the managerial duo of Tommy Wright and Andrew Wilson, who helped to guide the club up the Southern League Premier Division table, however once again financial issues at the club prevented any real challenge to reach the playoffs.
In April 2014 it was announced that a local consortium of seven businessmen headed by Paul Glass had agreed a deal to purchase the club and save it from the threat of administration. Stevie Noble was appointed as the Chairman and Tommy Wright was given sole charge of the first team, with Andrew Wilson departing. In his first year in charge of the side Tommy Wright led his team to the Southern League Premier Division Championship. The Steelmen secured the title and promotion back to the Conference North with a dramatic 3-2 win on the final day of the season against Poole Town who had led the division by one point going into that fixture. Spencer WeirDaley scored the winning goal for Corby with just nine minutes remaining.
However Corby suffered relegation after just one season in the National North. After a period of uncertainty as to which league Corby would be placed in by The FA, the Club made our first ever start in the Northern Premier League for season 2016/17.
Tommy Wright was relieved of his position in early October 2016 after a poor start, he was replaced by Gary Mills ex-Kings Lynn, and Wrexham Assistant manager in midOctober 2016 as Corby look to kick start season 2016/17.
OpponentSpotlight CORBYTOWNFC
However Mills was relieved of his position after just 6 months, the job being placed in Steven Kinniburgh’s hands for the rest of this season 2016/17 (Caretaker).
In early May 2017 David Bell was appointed Manager along with Rob Gould as his Assistant as Corby hope they can succeed in getting the club back into the fourth tier after two relegations in succession tumbling from the National North through the Northern Premier League’s in successive seasons.
After a poor start to the 2017/18 season the club parted company with them in late September 2017. Director of Football Steven Kinniburgh taking charge in a capacity of interim manager.
Steven was made permanent manager in late March 2018. He appointed Ashley Robinson as his assistant in June 2018. Kinniburgh resigned his position in July 2019.
Corby appointed senior players Gary Mulligan andAsh Robinson interim managers with Elliot Sandy as assistant to them. Mark Peters was installed as Temporary Manager in February 2020. In May 2020 Tommy Wright returned as Manager he led Corby to the Conference North (now National North) in his first spell. However Tommy resigned weeks before the start of the season due to family concerns.
Corby then appointed Gary Mills as Manager, Gary found fame with Leicester in the Premier Div before managing York City back to the Football League and winning the FA Trophy in the same season. Gary appointed Darron Gee as his Assistant.
Corby found themselves moved back to the NPL by The FA in May 2021 joining the new Midlands Division. However a poor season saw them both leave in April 2022. Lee Attenborough (ex-Loughborough Dynamo manager) was appointed into the Corby Town hot-seat in May 2022.
