WELCOME Our Premier Division status is still not guaranteed and any extra support would be very, very welcome Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League Southern Premier Division match. This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and of course, the travelling supporters of Frome Town Football Club and we hope you all have an enjoyable stay here with us. Three games have been played since my last notes and we have only lost one of them and picking up a valuable point in each of the other two games. First up was the entertaining goal-less draw with Slough Town here on Saturday March 5th and next up was a long trip to today’s visitors, Frome Town, on Wednesday March 9th. Absolutely gutted for everyone who went down to Somerset as we battled back from 2-0 down with Wardy and Remy looking to have secured a well earnt point and then the hosts nicked all three points in the dying embers of the game and extend their own unbeaten run which currently has stretched to six matches after their midweek draw up at Redditch United and in fact, they have only been beaten once in the last twelve games, so today’s fixture will undoubtedly be a
difficult one against one of the division’s form teams. Our next outing was against promotion hopefuls Kettering Town, up at their temporary base in Burton Latimer. After a good first half performance from ourselves, the game sprung to life inside the first three minutes of the second half as firstly, we broke the deadlock through a smart Drew Roberts finish and then the hosts equalised almost immediately when Will Grocott smashed home from distance. A very precious and important point gained on the day that Histon lost to a very late goal at Redditch United and currently fill the last relegation place, sitting eight points behind us having played the same amount of games.
Please do bring as many down to our remaining two matches, against Cambridge City next Saturday, April 2nd and the visit of Chesham United on Saturday April 16th, as our Premier Division status is still not guaranteed and extra support would be very, very welcome as we look to secure safety as soon as possible. Ok then, back to today. After some very decent performances from the lads in recent games, get behind them from the off and I’m sure that we will come good. BE LOUD, BE PROUD, BE A SAINT Mike Green
TODAY’S VISITORS
FROME TOWN Founded: 1904 Nickname: The Robins Chairman: Jeremy Alderman Website: www.frometownfc.co.uk A very special welcome for our next Southern League Premier Division engagement with Frome Town our visitors this afternoon. This is a very significant day for both our teams. Without wishing to be over-optimistic a glance at the league table suggests that a win for either could be enough to guarantee Step Three survival at the end of the season with just four Saturdays plus Bank Holiday Monday remaining in this season. From are in a phenomenal run of form just now as they stage their own personal version of the Great Escape. Since February 1st when Frome were six points from safety they have put together a run of form that would have seen them favourites for the league title if it had begun five months earlier. Since then they have played 12 league matches, winning six drawing five and losing just one and they are now nine points clear of the relegation zone. Their three most recent results were that 3-2 victory over our lads ten days ago, a 1-0 home victory over Kings Lynn last Saturday and then a 1-1 away at the league leaders Redditch United on Monday. Another interesting fact is that in seven Southern League meetings to date each side has won three times and there has been just one draw so we could hardly be more evenly balanced opponents. In those seven games each side has scored at least one goal – the exception being our first meeting here in February 2013 when Frome stole all three points in injury time with a 1-0 victory. So the stage is set for what both teams hope will be an historic victory.
CLUB HISTORY Frome Town, known as the Robins, was formed in 1904 and played in the Wiltshire Premier League. Early success came in the form of three Somerset Senior League Championships in between 1906 and 1911, whilst in between the Wiltshire League Championship was won in 190910.The Club reached the Fifth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in 1911-12 under the old format of the competition, which was today’s equivalent of the Third Round proper. The team travelled to Southport Central, only to lose 4-1 in front of a crowd of 3,366. Frome entered the Western League in 1919 and immediately became Division 2 Champions while the Somerset FA Senior Cup was won in successive seasons 1932-22 & 1933-34 & for a third time in 1950-51. Frome have always played at Badgers Hill and the ground held its biggest gate in 1954 when 8,000 spectators saw Leyton Orient win 3-0 in the FA Cup First Round Proper. In the same season promotion was won to Division One of the Western League & was beaten finalists in the inaugural Western League Cup. Promotion was gained back into the Western League after a spell in the Wiltshire League again in 1962-63 where the club remained for some years.Success was gained in the Somerset Premier Cup in 1966-67 with victory over Yeovil Town in the final and the cup was shared by the same two teams in 1968-69. Frome’s greatest triumph came in 1978-79 when the club won the Western League. The Championship was secured by losing only once in the last 32 matches. The League Cup followed in 1979-80. Another
vintage year followed in 1982-83 with victories in both the Somerset FA Premier Cup and the Western League Cup, plus runners-up in the league. The next trophy to follow was the 1983-84 Western Counties Floodlit Cup & in 198485 the Club reached the second round proper of the FA Challenge Trophy. Following those heady days, Frome flirted all too often with relegation from the Premier Division, and were relegated in 1995-96 and the Club spent several years in the lower reaches of the First Division. Frome won promotion back to the Western League Premier Division after a six year absence the following year & also reached the final of the league cup. The 2004-05 season saw the Club celebrate their centenary & events on the field saw the Robins reach the Quarter- Finals of the FA Vase before eventually losing 3-0 at Jarrow Roofing. In 200809 secured promotion into the Southern League for the first time in the Clubs history. The Somerset Premier Cup was also won with a 3-1 win over local rivals Paulton Rovers. After a poor start to life in the Southern League and a quick change of manager Frome went on an incredible unbeaten run and finished the season in sixth place and just three points from a playoff place. Season 2010/11 saw Frome go even further when they beat Sholing 1-0 in the promotion play-off final to secure another promotion as the Robins start another new era in the Southern Premier Division. 2011/12 was another excellent year for Frome as they had a credible mid-table finish in the Premier Division in their first season and were also named as the Somerset FA’s Charter Standard Community Club of the Year.

A brief round up of the recent results from the teams that matter Premier Division Saturday 19th March Redditch United scored four minutes from time to secure a 1-0 home win over fourth from bottom Histon but lost top spot to be replaced by Poole Town, two up at the interval, recorded a comprehensive 5-0 home victory over second last Bedworth United to give them the advantage on goal difference while Leamington scored a goal nine minutes before the break to secure a 1-0 success at Dorchester Town and move into third place to replace Hitchin Town who dropped to fifth when they were surprisingly held 0-0 at home by bottom club Bideford. Hungerford Town scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 at Stratford Town to move up to fourth but Chippenham Town dropped out of the play-off places when a goal midway through the first half gave Chesham United a 1-0 home victory while Weymouth lost ground on the leading pack when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Slough Town and Kettering Town, behind two minutes after the break, scored a minute later to secure a 1-1 home draw with St Neots Town. Dunstable Town took the lead on the stroke of half time but third bottom Paulton Rovers, having equalised just before the hour mark, secured a surprise 2-1 away win when they struck again in the second minute of time added on while Kings Lynn Town conceded a goal nine minutes after the break to go down 1-0 at Frome Town, who increased their run of wins to five and moved up three places and nine points clear of trouble, and Biggleswade Town, trailing at half time, levelled twelve minutes from time but went down 2-1 at Cirencester Town when the hosts scored in injury time. In the day’s other game, Merthyr Town, ahead at the
interval, conceded an equaliser in the opening minute of the second half but secured a 2-1 home win over Cambridge City with a strike twelve minutes later.
Division One Central Saturday 5th March Leaders Kings Langley, two down at the interval, had their ten game unbeaten run ended at Potters Bar Town, who increased their own run without a defeat to eight games when they completed a 3-1 home success while Egham Town suffered their second home defeat of the week when Godalming Town secured a 1-0 triumph nine minutes into the second half leaving Royston Town, who extended their unbeaten run to nine, to take over second place with goals in each half giving them a 2-0 win at Chalfont St Peter but AFC Rushden & Diamonds lost their fourth successive match and dropped to fifth in the table when visiting Uxbridge secured a 2-1 victory with a goal in the third minute of time added on while St Ives Town scored after nineteen minutes to take over fourth place with a 1-0 home win over seventh in the table Northwood. Sixth placed Aylesbury’s play-off hopes took a blow when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by second from bottom Leighton Town but Beaconsfield SYCOB scored twice in each half to complete a comfortable 4-1 win at Hanwell Town while Ware scored thirteen minutes from time to win 1-0 at home against Bedford Town and Petersfield Town also won 1-0 at home when a goal in the fourteenth minute proved too much for bottom of the table North Greenford United. Barton Rovers, a goal up at the break, scored just after the hour to complete a 2-0 win at Fleet Town while third from bottom
Aylesbury United struck with just over half an hour to go to secure a 1-0 victory over visiting Arlesey Town.
Red Insure Cup Final First Leg Monday 21st March Merthyr Town, a goal up at the break, conceded an equaliser in the opening minute of the second half but the home side struck four times before the end to secure a commanding 5-1 lead to take into the second leg at Cambridge City on 6th April.
Premier Division W/C Monday 21st March On Monday, Redditch United, behind on the stroke of half time, went back to the top of the table when they converted a penalty two minutes from time to snatch a 1-1 home draw with Frome Town, who extended their unbeaten run to six games and took another major step away from relegation, while fourth placed Hungerford Town lost 1-0 at home when Weymouth struck five minutes into the second half to move to within three points of their hosts and the play-off places. In the night’s other game bottom of the table Bideford scored two in six minutes around the hour mark to move to within two points of their nearest rivals with a 2-1 home success against Slough Town.

St Neots last league defeat prior to this was at Chippenham on 28th January so they are clearly not suited to away midweek league trips to the West Country as they returned home from Frome with a distinct feeling of deja-vu. However, it was a match they should not have lost for they led FOUR times with Frome fighting back to level each time before snatching a penalty goal to take all three points. The most disappointed man on the coach back home was Shane Tolley whose individual hat trick was his first for the club since 28th January 2012 and it took his current season’s goal tally to fourteen in just eleven starts (although he has featured a further seven times as a second half substitute). It was the first time that St Neots have conceded five goals in an away Southern League match and it left manager Gary King scratching his head in disbelief as his usually water tight defence conceded a goal almost every time the home team attacked. ‘We were just not good enough this evening’ he admitted ‘and we must sit down and sort it out’. However even in defeat there were plus points with Tolley’s hat trick and a very impressive debut appearance at right back for most recent signing Mason Spence a former Welsh U19 international. The first 20 minutes saw St Neots camping in the Frome half of the field with an almost embarrassing share of the possession but they were unable to make their superiority count with just off target finishes from Matt Nolan and Lewis Hilliard to show in their favour. Then after 19 minutes

new boy Spence made his mark winning the ball deep in his own half and finding Hilliard free on the right and his low cross was turned into the net at the near post by Shane Tolley. Ryan Frater had a headed effort deflected just wide from an Arthur Lee free kick and the only threat from the home side came from a series of lengthy throw-ins propelled deep into the penalty area by Ben Wood. That sent a warning of what was to come but when Frome equalised it came from a different source as a reverse cross from the bye line by Josh Ford found Wood unmarked just outside the penalty area and he swivelled to send a low shot past Nathan Abbey after 37 minutes. Two minutes later Rhys Baggridge handled a Hilliard cross to concede a penalty which Hilliard confidently converted to reinstate St Neots lead. The goals kept flowing as after 42 minutes a cross deflected off a defender and Matt Groves made it 2-2 but straight from the restart a Jay Davies shot from another Hilliard cross beat the keeper but rebounded off the inside of a post and Shane Tolley was on hand to end a breathless first half at 3-2 to the visitors. From took just seven minutes of the second half to level for a third time as a low Wood thrown was headed on for Rhys Baggridge to bundle the ball in from close range but two further minutes on Tolley completed his hat trick with a really controversial goal. St Neots were awarded a free kick and as Referee Andrew Newell was talking to the culprit and ushering the defensive wall back Hilliard slipped a quick free
kick to Tolley who nipped around the back of the defence to net as the home team was still awaiting a restart whistle. Frome protests were futile but this seemed to spur them on and just three minutes later a Wood free kick was swept in by Jack Vallis as the St Neots defence stood watching. Both sides may have been happy at 4-4 with a half hour still left but there was still one tragic throw of the dice for St Neots when after 74 minutes A Wood cross struck a St Neots arm and another penalty awarded which Kris Miller thundered past Abbey. Now both sides seemed to settle and there were fewer chances created but four minutes from time with St Neots chasing an impossible dream of a fifth goal they were reduced to ten men after Arthur Lee gave unwise verbal advice to the Referee and became only the third St Neots player to be sent off this season.

Saints and Rebels see out entertaining goal-less draw The real drama in this scoreless draw came after 25 minutes when the ball did finish up in the back of the net. Lee Barney got the ball past the goalkeeper for the visitors after a Ryan Hope shot came back of the crossbar and as Slough celebrated Referee Joshua Few was persuaded by a posse of St Neots players to consult his Assistant as a result of which he awarded St Neots a free kick for a fractional offside. That resulted in St Neots deservedly taking what could be a vital point with none of the sides in the drop zone winning on the day. Now, with two matches in ten days against Frome, who are now just four points behind them and a trip to in-form Kettering the period up to Easter will be an anxious time for Andy Davies’ side. The Manager made just two changes to his starting line-up for this match restoring Brett Longden in defence after suspension and preferring Dan Schiavi to Charlie Coulson on the right of midfield. However, there was also a 35 minutes’ substitute appearance for Remy Gordon and he showed that as he approaches match fitness he could be a key member of the squad in the remaining eight league matches. The match got off to a brisk start with Warren Harris charging
down a delayed clearance by Alex Archer and his cross set up Lee Barney who mis-kicked wide and then at the other end Drew Roberts was played clear by Peter Clark but crowded out when a shooting chance beckoned. Archer then had to go down smartly at the foot of a post to gather a free kick by Jhai Dhillon and Warren Harris lobbed over the bar when well placed. As the match settled Slough were employing a policy of lobbing the ball over a retreating St Neots defence for their front players to exploit their pace and Tom Ward and Danny Burns produced some very timely tackles and clearances to thwart their efforts. The ‘disallowed goal’ incident led to the overall tempo of the match dropping and towards the end of the first half much of the play seemed to get marooned in midfield with the only significant attempt on goal being a lengthy free kick by Sean Fraser comfortably gathered by Archer. The second half was a stark contrast with St Neots coming quickly out of the blocks to enjoy a twenty minutes’ purple patch where they should have taken the lead. Visiting keeper Mark Scott did well to gather a well-placed header by Roberts and then the same St Neots player sent in a snap shot from a reverse Josh Dawkin pass that tested the
keeper’s reflexes. Dhillon was then booked for arresting Dan Schiavi in full flight towards goal and the introduction of Gordon for Schiavi helped to maintain St Neots’ domination. From a Gordon free kick Lee Clarke got above the visiting defence to bring another save from Scott but Slough eager to exploit St Neots all out attacking approach broke well for Scott Harris to head over the bar from an inswinging corner. Still in action at the other end, Scott saved at full length from Gordon and saw a shot from Peter Clark that had beaten him pass just the wrong side of the far post. But that was as good as it got for St Neots with the final twenty minutes a rather nervy affair for both sides who clearly did not want to concede a goal. Roberts had a low shot blocked and Archer kept his goal intact with a reflex save from Warren Harris. Despite the slowing down of the tempo as the ninety minutes approached both sides could have snatched a late winner with Scott diving at the feet of Gordon to smother and Warren Harris twice guilty of failing to capitalize on chances in the final three minutes. The result was probably fair with neither side deserving to lose and the point probably more important to St Neots with Slough looking well clear of a threat of relegation.
St Neots Town Archer, Anton, Longden, Tann, Ward, Burns, Schiavi, Clark (P), Clarke (L), Roberts, Dawkin Subs: Gordon (for Schiavi 55), Brown (for Dawkin 72), Coulson, Heywood and Jeckells. Cards: Dawkin (Y – 53)

CHAIRMANS’ VIEWS I’d like to Welcome to Frome Town FC to the Premier Plus Stadium . First of all I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the last three months especially Andy, Iain and Lou. It’s been a difficult time at the club, not just with regards to picking up the pieces with the first team but with the whole shooting match. If I ever get time to sit down and think about it all I’ll probably s**t myself so best we keep pushing forward, head down ignoring the fact that this is a huge responsibility for all concerned. We have come a long way in a short space of time and with clear objectives and good people working towards a common goal I have no doubt that we are on the right path to sustainable quality success. We are tentatively planning for next season already while at the same time being mind full that we want to finish safe and as
high up the league as possible this season. It looks like once everything has been flushed through we will be running with a players budget on par with this season, spent sensibly over the 38 weeks of the season. Well done to all Academy teams this season regardless of where you finished in the league or whether you win cups. It’s not just about winning (although this is always a very nice bonus) it’s about whether you finish the season as better footballers and individuals than when you started. Time will tell if we have one of the best youth development set ups around but if this first season is anything to go by I have great hope for the future of the club. Nothing is ever easy and yes we have had the occasional incident that has not reflected well on us however to recognise, to deal with and ultimately to learn from our mistakes may just set us aside from a lot of other Academies.
Good luck to all the lads going over to Barcelona this weekend for the tournament, do us proud but most importantly take in the whole experience as you will remember this for the rest of your lives. This is the first of many tours that will be organised every season and will be a great addition to the life experiences we as a club can offer academy players and staff. The supporters football match is gathering pace with a full itinerary on the website for the day’s activities. This is the start of pre-season for us as a club and the first on a number of supporters days we will be holding at the football club. Not all will involve playing football however all will be social events that will bring supporters together for a common cause, to have fun and allow the club to recognise the contribution you make. Right let’s get back to the game. Lee

SO NOW we know then. Wembley will reverberate to the sound of four sets of supporters on one day – the line-up for the experiment which may shape the future of Non-League’s premier cup competitions has been confirmed. Morpeth, Hereford, Halifax and Grimsby fans will all be under one roof (well, if the weather turns!) The FA Vase kicking off at 12.15pm and the Trophy four hours later. Non-League Finals Day on Sunday May 22, a festival of football, is a one-off but should it be successful, this first will probably not be the last. Credit where it’s due. We’ve banged the drum for this for some time and the Football Association have made a brave call and will try something new and untested to breathe some much needed new life into the games. Make no mistake, it’s a logistical nightmare for them. It’s hard enough to police two sets of supporters, but four – all inside the stadium at one point – will be a

Extra time in the first game and a delayed presentation may get the Wembley suits uncomfortable in the posh seats, while a Sunday Leaguestyle tussle for the changing rooms will see the cleaner’s speed to scrub be tested to its fullest should the FA Vase go the whole way. You could of course argue the only reason the FA are giving this a whirl is because it will save a lot of money having to open Wembley’s heavy doors on two separate weekends, but there’s a fascination and excitement about how the whole day will unfold. They have taken stick. Just when the governing body were getting props for their unconventional methods, they leave themselves exposed to a return to the tutting and the eye-rolling. NonLeague Finals Day isn’t exclusive after all. England are playing, albeit in Manchester and yes later on, the fear is that the Three Lions’ Euro warm up with Turkey will steal national focus.
It’s an opportunity missed to dedicate a day to the Trophy and the Vase. There’s no reason at why England couldn’t play on the Saturday and leave all the attention to what’s going on under the Arch. But let’s not hammer the FA at every chance possible. The point remains that they have taken a gamble, risked the wrath of the traditionalists and brought life to both competitions when it was desperately needed.Yet the biggest thumbs up must be for the prices – rarely will you say that about Wembley. You can watch the entire day for £25, with concessions for £10. Do you know a youngster who has yet to see their national stadium? Bring them along for £1. In fairness, it’s a fantastic bargain.
