Taking installations to another level Specialist Installers of: HUGE FORMAT BANNERS SELF ADHESIVE FILM RETAIL DISPLAYS POSTER FRAMES EXHIBITIONS LIGHTBOXES

G.E.S.S Limited is a well established sign installation company which has been installing various signs and banners worldwide for the past 15 years. We are a highly competent company who are able to install all types of signage from street level through to extreme high level including complete building wraps and various other creative works. Over the years we have been approached to undertake a huge variety

industry.

We have developed with the aid of structural engineers our own variety of bespoke systems and fixing methods to enable us to install large pvc/mesh images totalling thousands of square meters to scaffold/ steel work structures, brick/stonework buildings and largely exposed structures which are affected by heavy winds from all directions. Included in this pack are various images of installs we have carried out across Europe, however these are just a few from our portfolio. Also included are some visual examples of some of the fixing solutions we have developed.

You will see when you flick through this pack that as an organisation we are capable of meeting the expectations of all our clients, even the most demanding.

Taking Installations to Another Level

of projects, some of which are unique and new to the media and sign

The Project at its peak involved over 20 crew members and contains over 3300m2 of print weighing over 1250kgs and over 18 tonnes of steel work. The completion of the building wrap on time was particularly satisfying as it was a project that we picked up at a late stage due to the failure of the previous installers and it had to be completed in time for Liverpool 2008 capital of Culture launch party on Friday 11th January 2008. The event took place in front of 100,000 people and a worldwide TV audience estimated at over 300 million. The pictures below illustrate the size of the project and the impact the completion of the wrap has on the site.

LIVERPOOL – LIME STREET PROJECT

A great example of a full building wrap undertaken by GESS. The building in Lime Street Liverpool is over 40m tall and due to its exposed location is hit by gale force winds almost constantly.

LIVERPOOL – LIME STREET PROJECT

A25m by 30m white banner with a ‘V’ for victory symbol printed in the union jack colours, this was a tribute to say ‘thanks’ on VE day to all the brave soldiers that fought in World War 2.

DOVER

This was quite the publicity stunt; 2 days spent on the white cliffs of Dover. On the first day installing a bespoke system which consisted of tensioned ropes running from Land Rovers on the cliff to weighted boxes at beach level.

Then on the second day the media arrived in full force along with a helicopter and navy frigate! And despite the terrible weather we dressed up in paratrooper clothing and hung the banner over the cliff, 2 abseilers went over and attached it to our system and waited while the media took all the video and photographs they needed. Once they were finished the banner was pulled up to the top and all the rigging cleared away.

The lads were all very pleased to see the banner in the paper the next day.

MILLENNIUM MILLS BUILDING

GESS Ltd were given the task of wrapping the derelict Millennium mills building in London opposite the excel arena, this consisted of installing a purpose designed banner attachment perimeter system and the Vauxhall campaign banners, which measured a total of 3887.5m2! They were posted to three sides of the building. A team of 11 abseiling specialists unveiled the large format Vauxhall Corsa advert on the main face from under a blackout cover. This particular unveiling was the biggest in the world and was on one of the biggest poster sites in Europe.

THE RED BULL AIR RACE 2008

We successfully won the contract to brand 3 huge grandstands being used for the Red Bull Air Race 2008 on the Greenwich Peninsula, London. The three grandstands were split between both sides of the Thames meaning logistically the crews had to move between two sites on opposite sides of the river to complete the installation. The grandstands were installed during the week prior to the event and were all different in size, shape and design. This meant each grandstand had to be measured following completion of it being built on site before we could begin to print the panels ready for installation. The 8 panels installed on the grandstands totalled over 3250 metres square. However, the final panel was installed early on the Friday morning prior to the event to the client’s satisfaction. Following the close of the successful event we returned to site to complete the removal of all the panels by Monday lunchtime in time for the dismantling of the grandstands.

HAMMERSMITH

The images you can see are part of a 4000m2 montage wrap of a one-to-one St Pauls Church image. There is an impressive PVC 46m x 12m advert facing the M4 and 2.9m x 9m lightbox images all changed fortnightly. This site is the leading London outdoor huge format advertising site.

HAMMERSMITH

This installation involved the application of over 550m2 of contravision in 105 panels each measuring 3.5m x 1.5m onto the glass facade of the BT Centre in London. The installation required the use of a 72m truckmount machine and abseiling which meant the application was undertaken in difficult and unusual conditions. The install was completed late on the Sunday night after 2 long days. The successful completion of the project meant the client and passers by were treated to a pleasant surprise the following morning when they returned to work.

BT CENTRE - LONDON

Six weeks later the 72m machine and our crew returned to remove the contravision and the facade was left as if we had never been there.

The London eye was another rather impressive project, as part of an advertising campaign for Transport for London. One of the pods on the London eye was completely wrapped in self adhesive film to look like a red London bus and another pod again completely wrapped to look like an underground tube carriage. The pods were originally only supposed to be wrapped for a short period of time but Transport for London were so impressed that the pods were left wrapped for much longer. After the seeing the impact of this original project, the pods were wrapped several more times one of which was the oyster discount promotion. Left: 500m2 adhesive film to the glass from ropes at Building.

GESS Ltd operatives using their IPAF powered access licenses to drive a genie boom and attach working platforms to the exterior steelwork so that our vinyl team could gain access to the glass.

VINYL APPLICATION

GESS Ltd are able to provide a highly skilled vinyl applying service and are able to provide an excellent finish to a number of surfaces including glass, and for any size.

GEORGE SQUARE - GLASGOW

This is a site of 53m by 13m which we change over every fortnight. In order to change the banner we have to close the road and undertake the change from 10pm to 4am in the morning, which as you can imagine in Glasgow can deliver challenging weather conditions. However, this has never affected the process and our crews are able to change the banner before the road is reopened. The images below are taken following the successful installation of new banners.

We were overjoyed to win the contract to wrap the Imperial War Museum, London during its restoration.

The one-to-one scale mesh print was produced on a HP Scitex five metre UV printer. The wrap was an exact facsimile of the building. The photography was undertaken by us prior to the onset of works, which was a particularly important aspect of the project as it was vital the facade was photographed at the right time of day with the most appropriate lighting to ensure the best image for artwork production. The wrap was a vital part of the aesthetics of the restoration project as it masks the unsightly scaffold that covered the famous front entrance to the Museum, presenting the building site in the best possible way to the thousands of visitors to his world famous Museum. The wrapping was removed following the successful completion of the restoration works to reveal the newly restored front entrance and front facade.

IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM

We undertook the wrapping of the famous front facade of the Museum on behalf of Mansells PLC, and were extremely pleased with the positive feedback it has received from both Mansells and their client the Imperial War Museum, not to mention the many visitors to the Museum.

To support the regeneration of 3 tower blocks in Lewisham, London. We were tasked with installing a banner on each of the 3 scaffolds surrounding the blocks. Although the blocks were all identical the scaffold frames differed dramatically, so each banner had to be finished to different specifications to fit perfectly onto each block to give the best possible appearance.

LEWISHAM

The banners combined are over 2100 square metres. They will remain in place until the project nears completion and the scaffolds need to be removed.

GESS pulled out all the stops at short notice on this project to install over 2500m2 of Diabond in less than 7 working days. Working around the clock with 2 crews to install 4 weeks work in 7 days to meet the rigid Centre opening deadline. This was particularly impressive as every other trade imaginable were on site working around us to finish all their work in preparation for the big opening.

THE CENTRE - LIVINGSTON

The crew were pleased to complete their installation work prior to the deadline, which was greatly appreciated because as you can see from the following images, the panels brightened up the vacant shop fronts dramatically.

THE CENTRE - LIVINGSTON

We were tasked with enhancing the blank grey walls around the food area with vibrant graphics. We used the latest indoor tension system fixed direct to the walls at high level to allow the installation of bright new graphics over night for the public’s viewing early the next morning.

WEMBLEY

GESS are also the leading install operation for huge format sporting events!

Here you can see the shear size of just one of the banners while it is laid out inside the dome to be prepped for installation.

Also a part of the 2012 back the bid campaign was this mesh banner installed onto a scaffold above the busy St. Pancras Train Station. This impressive banner was 40MH by 12MW and installed onto a tubular frame punched out from the scaffold behind. The install was carried out by a team of 4 men using rope access. As usual GESS worked hand in hand with on site scaffolders and together with the site agents to project manage the job from beginning to end.

This large white print was installed onto the BT headquarters using our changeable wire system.

2012 - BACK THE BID

9000m²+ mesh banner, this was a task that nobody said could be done! It consisted of 56 tones of steel wire, rigging and components which took 12 abseilers 18 days to install. We rigged a network of steel wire systems attached to the high level of wishbones protruding through the roof; this gave us a rigging/finished height 2m above the dome fabric roof to avoid any of the rigging or banners touching the fabric. We then proceeded to install the same system to the opposite hand of the dome roof and install the banner sections consisting of three parts to each side of the roof. This was all undertook for the ‘back the bid’ campaign for the 2012 games and in extreme weather of snow and gale force winds.

These 2 banners were fixed directly onto the brickwork of the turrets at Devon house using rope access from weight systems on the roof above. With excellent viewing from Tower Bridge this was another great addition to the ‘back the bid’ campaign.

This set of 5 mesh banners was installed onto a derelict building opposite Hackney Town hall; again this is another part of the back the bid campaign. This banner was installed onto a wire system with projection brackets. This was installed from rope access. We gained access into the derelict building and dropped some weight systems inside the windows to rig our ropes to and within 2 days a team of 4 installers had completed this eye-catching set of banners.

2012 - BACK THE BID

This mesh banner was installed onto a purpose built scaffold at the ExCeL centre. This was an excellent spot for attracting the attention needed for the ‘back the bid’ campaign with large amounts of pedestrian traffic moving through the events centre.

We have managed many of these projects from scratch working with scaffolders, structural engineers, local councils and traffic management companies to get road closure for installations or changeovers.

Working together from the beginning of the project is essential to a smooth transition throughout, this means that all works carried out meet the set requirements with no mistakes and of course those important deadlines can be met.

Installing our custom system means that the advert panels can be changed efficiently and have a smart border frame around the perimeter. The montage leaves the surrounding area with a tidy finish and provides a background when there is no advert in the frame.

GESS Ltd can also supply and install light boxes and incorporate them into the building/ scaffold wraps. Of course many clients simply wish to cover up an unattractive scaffold when their building is based in a prestigious area. For example this is a full cover installed onto the scaffold at the Bloomberg HQ while their building was being renovated. One to one image of the building behind.

FULL BUILDING WRAPS WITH CHANGEABLE PANELS

GESS Ltd have a huge amount of experience with installing full building/ scaffold wraps, these are can be used to cover up eye-sores for example the unattractive look of a scaffold around an advert panel or simply because the client wishes to hide the renovation of the building behind.

Using our vast experience GESS Ltd are able to install many types of signage in places previously not thought possible by others. The following images show some of the ways we have adapted the environment to suit the installation of the signs.

For support of the England cricket team from southern electric, we worked alongside our usual fabrication firm to create and install a custom designed bracket and wire system onto a gasometer outside the oval.

Here we have used the brickwork pillars on the front of the building to install a temporary system for Allianz Cornhill and the following is a similar install of a more permanent install of a bracket based systems using the steel posts outside the entrance to the Marriott Hotel.

This is an installation of four pvc banners onto each side of a tower crane, yet another example of how we can install a banner onto most structures.

BESPOKE SYSTEMS

This installation is part of the Renault Clio campaign. This was an out of the ordinary install with a mesh ‘sail’ shaped background and 96’ sheet into light box in fore ground.

This banner is for the London design week and is installed onto a purpose built scaffold with tubular frame.

DESIGN WEEK

This install takes place twice a year every March and September. It takes 3 men 1 day to install. The specs for the tubular frame are supplied by us to the scaffolding firm each time and as usual we work closely with scaffolders to ensure a smooth transition.

A simple and easy option is a banner onto scaffold, as usual GESS Ltd work with the onsite scaffolding firm to ensure that a custom frame is installed to the correct specification for the banner install.

SCAFFOLD BANNERS

There are number of frames we have developed from working with different scaffold companies over the years so we can ensure we can provide something that will suit the needs of the client. Here are a number of different size installs.

Included in the photos is the world’s largest advent calendar. A number of different stages were built for each date on the calendar and the banner was draped over the front to add a backdrop. Each stage had a sliding door so that each day a new part of the calendar was ‘opened’ to reveal the surprise behind.

This impressive looking pair of 50m by 20m mesh adverts are on Elland Road football stadium in Leeds and were posted on either side of the main stand by a team of GESS operatives of 8 men and was posted using rope, it was fixed directly to cladding and uses a changeable wire system. The following pictures are of a variety of different size mesh banners installed onto a variety of wire systems.

WIRE FRAME SYSTEMS

When the construction of a scaffold is too costly or just not needed, there is the option of a wire frame system. There are a variety of different methods for fixing the wire frame around the perimeter of the proposed banner that have been designed and modified by ourselves over the years. They all share the basic principle of a used tension steel wire for attaching the perimeter of the banner. Usually this type of frame requires a fixing into the building or structure behind, this can be brickwork, concrete or cladding, however where this is not possible we have many other methods for connecting the wires without disturbing the structure or faรงade of the building.

We provided the complete service for the Bothwell Street Project, from initial site meeting to sign-off. Our service included site survey, structural calculations, system supply and scaffold supervision.

BOTHWELL STREET

The 3no banners totalled over 640m2 and were all installed on the same day to the clients satisfaction. At the end of the project the banners were stripped for recycling in less than 6 hours causing minimal disruption.

I have contracted and worked with GESS on many global events over the past few years, undertaking a variety of rigging and installation projects for which I require the security of industry knowledge, along with an unstinting professional approach to all challenges thrown at them (of which there have been many). I always feel comfortable with GESS on board that a rational and reasonable approach will be taken to all pre-production, and even more so during any production period should issues arise that need resolving. The management team of Martin and Gavin have at all times been exemplary and considered, ranging from carrying out surveys, supplying health and safety documentation and calculations, etc, and this attitude permeates down to the installation teams they supply on site, resulting in a comprehensive and extremely competent organisation. David Jiggens – Production Director – Event Production

“The business ethos of GESS is similar to our own. They never say “NO we do not do that” but always say “YES this is how we can do that”. For this reason, plus their professionalism and 24/7 attitude all our large banner work is installed by GESS. This has included many full building wraps between 3000 and 8000m² each down to 1000m² single pieces draped over the White Cliffs of Dover.” John Walker – Managing Director – Macro Art Ltd “The key to my successful working relationship with GESS Ltd is that throughout each project on which we work together, the process is always smooth and planned out and there is always someone to talk to should I have any questions or require any further information” Andy Wilson – Managing Director Press-On Digital “At BiG Advert we insist on giving our clients quality service with a positive, enthusiastic can do approach; to achieve this we need the same ethos and support from our supply partners. GESS have always fulfilled every aspect of this and have never failed to achieve our demanding schedules on sometimes very complex and difficult projects” Robin Lippett – Managing Director BiG Advert Ltd “GESS Ltd has worked closely with us at Ocean for over ten years on some of the largest Outdoor Advertising sites ever to come to market. They provide a unique “get the job done attitude” and offer us a complete UK wide service. Their operatives always conduct themselves in a professional manner when representing Ocean on our sites across the Country and always operate within the required Health and Safety systems. They help ensure banners maintain their premium status from the design and build stage right through to ongoing posting and maintaining Ocean’s ‘Art of Outdoor’ benchmark. All works are carefully organised in advance and the safety of the General Public is never compromised. GESS continue to provide an exemplary service and we look forward to continuing our close working relationship with them in the future”. Mark Bracey, Development Director, Ocean Outdoor “We are pleased to use GESS as an installer for our large format banner displays. They are easy to communicate with and efficient in any form of response. They install signage to the highest of quality, no job is too big or too small, and their install teams well managed and efficient in the work they have carried out for us. GESS will continue to work for us in the future”. Gary Newton for Outdoor plus Ltd

TESTIMONIALS

The hoardings graphic panels project we were producing was running so late due to the late finishing of the building contractor. We contacted GESS for their help. Within days they had 12 men in Livingston Scotland for a 10 day period working around the clock. The end client was delighted as the project finished exactly on time for the shopping centre to open to the public. What a team! Julian Manuel, Sales Manager – Clicks Digital Solutions Ltd
