WELCOME A poor game which was spoilt by the swirling, windy conditions Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of St Neots Town Football Club and the Mick George Academy for tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Evostik League Southern Premier Division game. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bideford Football Club and we hope you have an enjoyable stay with us here in Cambridgeshire for what will be their second visit to the county in little over 72 hours having been beaten two-nil by Cambridge City on Saturday. Saturday saw us entertain a Hungerford Town team who are looking for promotion and in a poor game which was spoilt by the swirling, windy conditions, it was the visitors who scored twice in the first half and then were happy to sit and defend their lead against a Saints side who had scored five in their previous outing at Cirencester yet contrived to create only one effort of note on the Hungerford goal throughout the ninety minutes, this being a shot from outside the box from new Stevenage loanee, striker Dipo Akinyemi. During the game, we lost keeper Ben Jackson with a badly cut eye so please join me in wishing Ben a speedy recovery and also welcome Dipo to the Club. Our next outing sees us travel to near neighbours Histon this coming Saturday in the

second of two very important games as we look to keep the gap between ourselves and the drop zone as wide as possible. Please, if you can, get yourselves over to the Glassworld Stadium to cheer the boys on as your support really could make a difference. Ok then, back to todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game

BIDEFORD AFC Founded: 1946 Nickname: The Robins Chairman: Roy Portch Website: www.bidefordfc.co.uk Today we welcome our visitors for our next engagement in the Southern League. They are the players, Directors and supporters of Bideford and we extend to them our usual warm welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium. Of course a midweek trip of more than 500 miles is a daunting prospect and we wish Bideford an uneventful and peaceful trip back to Devon after the match. The reason for this rearrangement is that on 14th November – the original date set for this match both teams were involved in home ties in the Second qualifying round of the FA Trophy with Bideford defeating their Ryman League Premier Division visitors by the odd goal in five whilst our lads bowed out 2-1 to Hungerford. Bideford went on to lose in the Third qualifying round to Maidenhead United who play in the National League South. However the prospect of national cup competition is now only a distant memory for both of our clubs today with Southern League Premier Division survival the main preoccupation. When these notes were written Bideford were languishing at the foot of the league table with 17 points from twenty-six matches – a dozen points away from Step Three survival and even doubling their points haul in their remaining 20 matches may not be enough to guarantee survival. They have played at this level since the 2012/13 season having won the South and West Division the previous season so both out clubs arrived at Step Three at the same time. Bideford’s best finish at this level was 8th – two seasons ago. We wish them well in their survival attempt.

Club History Founded in 1946, the club played three seasons in the Exeter & East Devon League before joining the Western League in 1949. Bideford had a request to be elected to the Second Division denied, and had to play in the Third Division instead. This was the only season the Western League ran a Third Division, and Bideford won it without losing a game. Two seasons later they also won Division Two, and so took their place in Division One. Bideford won the Western League three times before joining the Southern League in 1972. The club spent three seasons at that level before the expense involved and increased travelling took its toll, and they had to drop down back to the Western League. During their Southern League days, the club set an all-time FA Cup record, when in 1974-75 they played thirteen FA Cup games in a single season - they faced numerous replays in qualifying rounds including needing five games to beat Falmouth Town and four more to beat Trowbridge Town in the next round. With the subsequent abandonment of second and further replays, this record is likely to stand for a very long time. Two more Western League titles followed in the early 1980s. Several players from the club have progressed to Football League status, the most recent of them being Tony Dennis and Shaun Taylor. Two former internationals have played for the club at the end of their career, Welshman Leighton Phillips, and Dermot Curtis from the Republic of Ireland.

Bideford have won the Toolstation Western Premier League 9 times over the years, as well as lifting silverware in the Devon St Lukes Bowl, Devon Professional Cup, and Western League Cup. In FA competitions, Bideford AFC’s record is quite impressive, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup on four occasions, and reaching the Semi-Final of the FA Vase in 2003/04. In 2008/09 the FA Vase campaign saw Bideford reach the quarterfinal stages, where they were knocked out by an impressive Lowestoft. Bideford AFC gained promotion from the Toolstation Western Premier League at the end of a fantastic 2009/10 season, in which they did the double winning the League and the Westinsure Devon St Lukes’ Bowl where they beat Exeter City 2-1 in the Final. Bideford AFC were promoted to the Evo-Stik Southern League South & West Division in May 2010, the first time they have played in the Southern League in 35 years. After finishing that first season in a credible 10th place, the 2011/12 season saw them crowned Champions by an impressive 11pt margin, gaining promotion for the first time in their history so the Southern League Premier Division. Manager Sean Joyce is an exprofessional footballer, who spent his career playing for Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City and Torquay Utd. He has managed Bideford since 1998, bringing an unprecedented level of success to the Club during his time here.

WHO’S WHO GOALKEEPERS KYLE MOORE Kyle has also played for Hereford United after progressing through their youth ranks. Kyle has now played over 30 games for the Robins. RYAN WALTON Ryan is seventeen years old, and has joined us from Brixham. DEFENDERS NICK BARKER He is primarily a Defender, but is capable of putting in a fine performance anywhere on the pitch, and over the years has played in almost every position, including in goal for the Robins. He has played over 360 games, scoring over 30 goals in the process. DAN HARRISON Dan is in his first season with the Robins, and is a 24 year old Central Defender. He has previously played for Newport County and Cinderford. Dan has now made over 50 appearances for the Robins. JOSH JOHNSTON 19 year old Josh has stepped up from the reserves this season. He has also played for Park United. CHRIS MCGRATH Chris is a Central defender, who has previously played for his home town club Taunton Town as well as The Republic of Ireland, Burnley, Liverpool, Walsall, Telford, Leigh RMI, Chorley, Bridgwater Town and Frome Town. NICK MILTON Nick has made over 90 appearances for the Robins. He has also played for Torquay United and Stoke Gabriel. He won the young player of the year award last season. O’NEIL ODUFIN O’Neil is a young Torquay United first year pro, who is on loan with the Robins. STEVE ORCHARD He has made over 160 appearances for the Robins, He has also played for Bridgwater; Weston-Super-Mare and Willand Rovers. STEPHEN REED 30 year old Steven has played League football for both Torquay United and Yeovil Town. He has also played for Macclesfield, Weymouth, and Holsworthy.

IAN SAMPSON Ian has played over 150 games for the Robins and with us won the Southern League Division One South and West. MIDFIELDERS MATT ANDREW He has now played over 230 games for the Robins, scoring over 50 goals in the process. Matt has won the Devon St Luke’s Bowl, and the Western League Premiership and the Southern League Division One South and West with the Robins. KHALED BADAVI Khaled is 24 years old, and has also been on the books of Budleigh Salterton; Exmouth Town; Tiverton Town; Taunton Town; Aylesbury and Willand Rovers. MATTY BYE He has previously played for Exeter City (where he was voted young player of the year); Truro City and Tiverton Town. Matty is a skill full midfielder who also played in Belgium for six months. Matt has now played over 180 games for the Robins, and scoring over ten goals in the process. SEAN DOWNING He has played over 220 games for the Robins, scoring over 70 goals in the process. He has been leading goal scorer two seasons on the trot as well the player of the year. He made his England C debut last season. RICHARD GROVES Richard is Club Captain, and he has played over 170 games for the Robins, and scored over 30 goals in the process. He won the Southern League Division One South and West with us. BEN WOOD He is in his third spell with Bideford, and has made over 230 appearances for the robins, scoring 20 goals in the process. Ben has also played for Yeovil, Weymouth and Frome Town. STRIKERS JOE BARKER He is 20 years of age, and signed from Appledore this season. JAMIE CHAMBERLAIN 26 year old Jamie is in his second spell with the Robins, after being in

the squad that won promotion from the South and West Division one. He has also played for Upton Athletic. KEVIN SQUIRE Kevin has played over 290 games for the Robins, and scored over 80 goals in the process. BILLY TUCKER Billy is back with the club for a second time, having also played for Barnstaple town. ANGUS WILSON Angus Wilson Hails from South Devon, and also played for Dartington and Totnes and Willand Rovers. MANAGEMENT SEAN JOYCE, MANAGER A former League professional, who played for Cambridge United, Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City; Torquay United and then NonLeague with Elmore and Taunton Town. Sean made 200 Football League appearances, taking over as Bideford Manager, during the 1998/99 season. Bideford were at that time a struggling Western League Premier division side, and since then, Sean has taken the club from success to success during his seventeen years as club manager, gaining Promotion to the Southern League South West Division one and then up to the Southern League Premier. MATT HOCKLEY, ASSISTANT MANAGER Matt was a professional footballer with Torquay United gaining the nick name “Pitt Bull” for his energetic tackling, he made 239 appearances, and scored 10 goals, He also won promotion with them after they won the Second Division. He also played for Truro City and now plays with Dereham Town in the Ryman League. Matt is 33 years of age, works with Learning difficulties patients. Matt is a legend with the Bideford fans, and has won the supporters player of the year trophy. He has made over 220 appearances for the Robins, scoring over 40 goals in the process. Matt has won the St Luke’s Devon Cup three times, and also the Western League Premier Division as well as the Southern League Division One South and West Title.

A brief round up of the recent results from the teams that matter Premier Division 06 February 2016 Hungerford Town struck twice before the half-hour mark to secure a 2-0 win at St Neots Town and move up to third in the table but Redditch United missed the chance of moving back into the play-off places when a goal thirteen minutes from time condemned them to a 1-0 reverse at Kings Lynn Town while Hitchin Town, twice trailing, brought an end to a run of three successive defeats when they scored with two minutes remaining to complete a 3-2 home win over Histon. Bedworth United moved out of the bottom two when, after going behind five minutes after the interval, they struck twice within the next six minutes to win 2-1 at Slough Town while Cirencester Town, two up with ten minutes remaining, conceded a goal a minute from time but secured a 3-1 win at Chesham United when they converted a penalty in time added on and Cambridge City struck

twice in the second half to win 2-0 at home against bottom of the table Bideford. Division One Central 06 February 2016 AFC Rushden & Diamonds, a goal ahead at half time, consolidated their position at the top of the table when two further goals after the break gave them a 3-0 home win over Ware while St Ives Town scored twice after the hour mark to win 2-0 at Fleet Town to move into second replacing Chalfont St Peter who dropped three places when they lost 3-1 at Kings Langley who took over third spot and Royston Town, ahead after seven minutes and three up at the interval, rose to fourth with a convincing 4-0 success at Northwood. Egham Town struck two minutes from time to secure a 1-0 win at third from bottom Leighton Town but Beaconsfield SYCOB, who went behind three minutes before the break, conceded three times in the final

twenty minutes to crash to a 4-0 defeat at Potters Bar Town while Godalming Town scored three times in the second half to inflict a 3-0 home defeat on Bedford Town. In the only other game to beat the weather, Uxbridge, who had taken a first half lead, conceded an equaliser twenty minutes from time but struck a minute from time to win 2-1 at home against bottom of the table North Greenford United. Division One South & West 06 February 2016 Winchester City, two ahead at the interval, took advantage of other playoff contenders being hit by the weather by moving up to fifth in the table after completing a 3-0 home victory over Yate Town.

St Neots travelled 500+ miles to play out their first ever goalless draw in the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik league and that result reveals an interesting but worrying trend in recent matches. Only two teams in the division have scored more goals than St Neots but Iain Parrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side has now failed to score in four of its last five outings and since the turn of the year they have failed to find a suitable strike partner for Ben Mackey to replace the departed Stefan Moore. To be fair both Dubi Ogbonna and Kyle Asante who filled the gap during this match looked reasonable but may need more time to establish themselves and in the meantime the slide down the table continues. St Neots could easily have won this match and probably deserved to return from North Devon with all three points but three times they were denied by the woodwork whilst defensively they looked encouragingly sound with the return from suspension of Arthur Lee and keeper Jack Giddens was only twice seriously tested. The first meeting of the sides at St Neots produced eight goals but this return was a very different contest. On an uneven surface St Neots had to moderate their

usual short passing approach but they created the early chances with Adrian Sear testing Tim Sandercombe from distance before the keeper did well to push a low shot from Dubi Ogbonna around a post. It was 25 minutes before Jack Giddens was in action saving a weak header from Aaron Harper-Penman but St Neots were enjoying much the better share of possession with Jay Davies and Sear dominant in midfield. Just before the half hour St Neots were unlucky not to be in front after two good efforts by Ogbonna. He first accelerated past his marker to see a shot rebound from a post and he then collected a short pass from Ben Mackey only to see his shot blocked on the line by Ian Sampson. As the first half drew to a close a shot from Rob Farkins following a corner was comfortably gathered by Giddens. The second half began with more end to end action as the sides sought to up their game. Ben Wood overlapped to fire wildly over the bar and then St Neots suffered a setback as Sear was cruelly brought down from behind by Farkins earning the Bideford player a booking. Sear continued after five minutes on and off the

field treatment but was clearly slowed up by his injury. Upon his return he saw skipped Dan Jacob round the final defender to see a shot rebound from a post to be scrambled clear and then in the next attack Lewis Hilliard had a lengthy shot blocked and from the rebound Ryan Auger shot across the face of goal. St Neots sent on Kyle Asante from Ogbonna and the woodwork then saved Bideford for a third time as a Mackey shot rebounded. St Neots continued to look the better side with both Hilliard and Jacob shooting wide and then there was an eventful last five minutes as both side seemed to sense they could snatch all three points. Giddens made an outstanding save to deny Sean Downing and the same player produced a cheeky back heel that rebounded from a post. However the final word went to St Neots as Asante had a shot blocked and from the rebound Ben Mackey blazed wide.

After their dismal run of just one win in their last seventeen matches St Neots came good with an excellent victory at Cirencester. This was their first win since 25th November and it featured five different scorers including three players notching their first league goals for the club. Four goals ahead after 55 minutes it was looking like a runaway victory until the home side belatedly came to life to score twice but the final outcome was never in doubt. The injury to Ryan Hawkins at Stratford seven days earlier was followed by a midweek training injury suffered by goalkeeper Andy Wilton so into the side to join the other two Stevenage loan players came Ben Jackson for his debut between the posts and he was joined in the starting line-up by central defender Tom Ward back from injury after missing fourteen matches. The side carried on where they had finished at Stratford but this time they scored the goals they had created and left the home side nonplussed despite them having won at the Premier Plus Stadium earlier in the season. The midfield pairing of the experienced Adam Tann and the lively Peter Clark was the real key to the St Neots victory and the visitors were defensively sound apart from a brief spell early in the second half. It was the perfect start for the visitors who went ahead in their first attack after ninety

seconds. A flowing move down the left saw Brett Longden pick out Lee Clarke in the centre of the field and he rolled the ball invitingly into the path of George Casey playing wide right and he scored with a low shot to open his account with the club. Cirencester responded with Jamie Reid testing Ben Jackson and then Tom Meechan in full flight was tripped by Leigh Henry earning the home skipper the first yellow card of the game after quarter of an hour. Ten minutes later a similar break by Meechan picking up a through pass from Adam Tann saw him burst through and when his first shot rebounded off the advancing keeper he followed up to double St Neots’ lead. After 28 minutes Meechan was played clear on the right by a delightful pass from Casey but his shot flew across the face of goal. With the St Neots defence easily repelling the sporadic attacks by the home side the visitors’ domination continued and home keeper Jack Stevens had to throw himself at the feet of Lee Clarke to smother the ball after good work by Josh Dawkin and Peter Clark. However, the Cirencester defence was breached again after 32 minutes when another cross from the left by Brett Longden who was finding lots of space picked out

Dawkin and he took a touch to settle himself before shooting across the goalkeeper for his first St Neots goal. The second half started where the first had left off with Peter Clark shooting narrowly over the bar and then on 55 minutes pure skill by Lee Clarke produced the best goal of the seven scored in this match. Receiving the ball with his back to goal he turned smartly to lose his marker before hitting a perfectly placed shot inside the far post. Maybe being four goals ahead caused the visitors to lose concentration but Cirencester stung into action then had a purple spell of ten minutes when they battered the St Neots defence and were rewarded when Charlie Griffin was left unmarked at the far post to pull a goal back. Ben Jackson then did well to turn a dipping shot from Aidan Bennett over his crossbar and two over enthusiastic challenges by home players earned two further cautions. With eight minutes remaining Griffin scored his second goal for the home side – the ball going in off a post but St Neots had the final word as Peter Clark got his reward for a fine individual performance as he claimed St Neots’ fifth goal after substitute Drew Roberts had seen his shot parried by Stevens.

After their impressive performance at Cirencester seven days earlier it was back to earth with a bump as high-lying Hungerford effectively produced a smash and grab raid scoring two first half goals before shutting up shop after the break. The three points were enough to lift the Berkshire club into the play-off places leaving the rather inexperienced St Neots no reward from a wind dominated contest.

However, their overall performance fell short of the standard they had set in their previous outing and after a poor first half they created little after the break to seriously threaten the solid visiting defence. With Lee Clarke and Matt Smyth joining the injury list there was a recall to the starting lineup for 16 years old Claudio Ofosu whilst up front Dipo Akinyemi, another loanee from Stevenage, made his debut. With the wind in their favour in the first half, St Neots never looked capable of harnessing it in their favour but produced their best play after the break whilst the visitors always looked solid and confident in defence and once having established their two goal lead they never looked like losing. St Neots had goalkeeper Ben Jackson taken off to hospital after 56 minutes with a split eyebrow following an accidental collision but fortunately they had Andy Wilton on the bench and never looked disadvantaged. For Hungerford this was their second victory

Hungerford went ahead in the first real attack by either side after nine minutes. St Neots gave the ball away in midfield and a penetrating through ball from Mike Jones found James Clark behind the St Neots defence and his well-placed shot went across Ben Jackson’s dive to nestle just inside the far post. Thirteen minutes later Matt Day then squandered a chance to increase the lead when he volleyed over the bar but it was Day who set up the second goal after 28 minutes sending a cross to find the head of unmarked top visiting scorer Nat Jarvis who dived full length to convert. Both sides were struggling to come to terms with the swirling windy conditions with the ball out of play for far too long and St Neots’ best first half chance was a 25 yards shot by Dipo Akinyemi that passed just the wrong side of a post. Hungerford seldom created further openings and the first half drew to a disappointing close with both sides hoping for second half improvement.

There was almost a freak goal after 52 minutes when a viciously inswinging corner by Clark rebounded from the outside of the near post and another corner from the same player saw Ben Jackson dive forward to punch clear but in a subsequent accidental collision he suffered that cut eyebrow and so Andy Wilton returned to the side as a replacement. He was quickly in action pushing away a shot from Rhys Tyler before punching away another corner. Akinyemi tried hard to make some impression on the visiting defence but shot over the bar after neat play by Tom Meechan and in St Neots best second half move Meechan sent Ofosu clear on the right but his low cross was cut out by Gary Horgan with two St Neots players waiting to capitalize. The home side then sent on a partly fit Drew Roberts for his fourth appearance as a substitute in a bid to boost their attack but he saw little of the ball with the Hungerford defence giving nothing away. The visitors created two late chances but substitute Harry Goodger headed over the bar and Stefan Brown forced a good save from Wilton.

CHAIRMANS’ VIEWS It does seem rather daft that a semiprofessional football club that has part time footballers has a 500 mile round trip to play any football matches let alone one on a Tuesday night. Are we able to invest in academies, scholarship programmes and coaching staff to such a degree that we will produce a whole raft of Jamie Vardy’s with overheads that cripple most or at the very least severely restrict what we are able to reinvest back into the club to increase the overall quality of what we can offer and produce. It’s not a moan it’s just a fact. We spend 11K a year on travel to away grounds, 11K a year!!! We invest around 3K a year on putting academy/scholarship coaching staff through their badges as well as around 4K a year on youth football support programmes. What we are able to spend is determined by what we have available to us and this is determined, in part, by how daft it is that we spend 11K on travel to away fixtures. I only watched the first half against Hungerford due to having to take young Ben Jackson to the A&E to get his eye stitched up but what I saw was pretty poor and not to the

standards we’d set ourselves in our last three matches, the second half was better so I’m told but here’s the thing, we need to beat the teams around us to remain in the league. It’s crap, I know, that we find ourselves in this position but we can only work towards improving on what we have been presented with and I for one believe we are going about this in the right way. Ok things to look out for: • Feb Half term Fifa and Minecraft party room holiday club.......still spaces available • Scholarship trails for boys on the morning of the 17th Feb and for the girls early evening same date • Reedman’s revamp will start over the next month or so and I’m sure we all agree that as a matchday bar it works better than the Gregory. • Programmes are being produced for sale on the day as well as free on the website (Saturday was a blip) there is also the option to reserve a programme on the forum • Rock a sal tickets are available....please support this night as this will be the first of many social evenings during the year. LEAGUE NEWS Bostik extend Evo-stik Southern Sponsorship for further year Leading adhesives and sealants provider Bostik has extended its sponsorship of The Southern Football League until at least the end of the 2016/17 season, furthering its support of grassroots football through its well-known brand, EVO-STIK. The deal means the League will continue to be known as The EVO-STIK League Southern for the remainder of the 2015/2016 season and into 2017, with an option for a fourth successive term. Commenting on the deal, Dale Poulton, Commercial Director of Bostik UK said: “We have a long-standing relationship with this tier of football, which includes our sponsorship of The Northern Premier League. The brand synergy is perfect and this agreement provides extensive exposure through the media, marketing campaigns and advertising in all stadia, programmes and on club websites. KETTERING TOWN

In January 1976, Derek Dougan, the ‘Doog’, had retired from professional football and took on the role of CEO of Kettering Town Football Club. In one of his first major acts in the role, on the 24th January, Kettering Town Football Club became the first club in the UK to have a sponsor on the front of their shirts. At home to Bath City, it was just before 3pm when the players ran onto the pitch with ‘Kettering Tyres’ blazoned across their shirts and history was in the making.

Whether it is Arsenal with Emirates or the local pub team with “Vince the Barber”, every football team up and down the country, from 4 year olds playing 7 a side football in the local playing fields to the heady heights of the Premier League, adorns the name of a sponsor. Everyone knows that other than match day tickets or, for the very lucky few, TV revenue, it is for most clubs the principle revenue earner. What is less known, however, is that without Kettering Town Football Club trailblazing the way, it would never have been possible. This year alone Premier League Football Clubs earned more than £200 million from shirt sponsorship deals. The top ten shirt sponsorship deals in the world account for revenues of over £300 million and this year Manchester City are expected to sign a new improved contract worth more than £80 million per season. The following week after the shirts had been worn again away at Weymouth the FA ordered the removal of the logo. Dougan duly removed four letters, claiming that ‘Kettering T’ stood for Kettering Town. The FA were not impressed and reiterated its order and, with Kettering Town threatened with a £1,000 fine, the logo was removed. The following season both Derby County and Bolton Wanderers, along with Kettering Town, applied for the right to carry sponsorship on their shirts and eventually, in June 1977, the FA conceded but, unfortunately, Kettering Town were unable to attract a sponsor. The rest as they say is history and what a history it has been - since 1976 Shirt Sponsorship has become major business.
