ST NEOTS TOWN Redditch United ISSUE 23: THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE £1.50 The Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division
WELCOME The games are coming thick and fast Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of St Neots Town Football Club and the Mick George Academy for today’s Evostik League Southern Premier Division match. This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Redditch United Football Club and we hope you have an enjoyable, if brief, stay with us up here in St Neots this evening. The games are coming thick and fast and we have quite a few home games coming up in a short period of time and I’d like to thank you all for your continued support over the remainder of the season and of course, into next season and beyond. Tuesday evening saw us entertain a high flying Hitchin Town and despite an explosive start to the game with us taking the lead inside the first two minutes, we couldn’t kick on and put the visitors to the sword. I wasn’t able to make the game due to work commitments however I’m led to believe we got the ball down and gave it a damn good go, especially in the first forty five minutes. Also, please join me in welcoming Charlie Coulson to the Club. Charlie has joined us from Ilkeston Town in the Northern Premier League and will be a great addition to the Club. It was nice to see the attendance up to almost the
THE 12TH MAN three hundred mark for this game too. A good turnout from both Clubs on a bitterly cold evening with supporters taking advantage of the two-for-£15 offer. Wonder how many will be here today? Today is going to be yet another tough game with our visitors pushing for automatic promotion and having won five-nil at
Bideford on Tuesday evening, they are sure to arrive in a confident mood. Get behind the boys as per normal, it does make a difference. PUMP UP THE VOLUME Mike Green
TODAY’S VISITORS
REDDITCH UNITED Founded: 1891 Nickname: The Reds Chairman: Chris Swan Website: www.redditchutdfc.co.uk A very special welcome for our next Southern League Premier Division engagement with Redditch United our visitors this afternoon. Currently third in the table with games in hand of the two clubs ahead of them they are well placed to achieve at least a play-off place if they can maintain their form and results in the final third of the season. They hold the distinction of being our ‘bogey’ side because in seven league meetings with the Reds we have so far picked up just two points from drawn matches although we did beat them at Redditch in the Red Insure Cup semi-final almost exactly two years ago on the 24th February 2014. That was thanks to a memorable hat trick scored by long-time fans favourite Lewis Hilliard and of course we went on to lift the trophy in a two legged final with Tiverton. Redditch have been in the Southern League for just four seasons following their relegation from the Conference North. Geographically located in the Midlands they are one of the ‘yo-yo’ clubs who have been shuttled between the Northern and Southern pyramids but they will now be happy to settle to establish themselves in the Southern League – despite losing near neighbours Stourbridge who were moved north last season. So this will be a fourth visit to the Premier Plus Stadium for Redditch and they are one of the few teams that presently still have a 100% record on this ground but our lads will be happy to dent that record this evening.
Club History Redditch Town was established in 1891 and immediately joined the Birmingham Combination,
where they played for a single season. The club achieved its first success by winning the Worcestershire Senior Cup in 1894 and becoming runnersup in 1898. In 1914 they won the Birmingham Combination Championship for the first time and, finally, the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1925. The 1930s were a much more rewarding period for the club and its supporters, starting by winning the Worcestershire Senior Cup and the Birmingham Senior Cup in successive seasons. Reds almost achieved a notable double in 1932–33 when, having won the Combination, they were defeated in the Senior Cup Final. Apart from an unsuccessful appearance in the Birmingham Senior Cup final just before the World War, Reds moved into a fallow period. In 1953 Redditch regained the Combination Championship and was runnersup in the Worcestershire Senior Cup. This Championship success was repeated in 1955. In 1957 they were runners-up in the Birmingham Senior Cup. In 1971–72 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 6–0 in the replay at Peterborough United after a 1–1 draw at home in front of a crowd of 4,500. At the end of the season they finished sixth in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division and joined Division One North of the Southern League. They won the Worcestershire Senior Cup in 1974 and 1975. The following season they won Division One North and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1978–79 they finished eighth in the league and became founder members of the Alliance Premier League
(now the Football Conference). However, they finished bottom in its first season and dropped into the Southern League’s Midland Division. After finishing as runners-up in 1985–86 the club was promoted to the Premier Division, where they remained until relegation in 1989. The following season they reached the first round of the FA Cup losing 3–1 to Merthyr Tydfil. At the end of the season they beat Northwich Victoria 4–3 over the two-legged final of the Staffordshire Senior Cup. In 1997–98 the Reds reached two cup finals, the Southern League Cup and the Birmingham Senior Cup. Both were lost, and the cup run caused a large fixture backlog that resulted in the club having to play nine matches in nine days at the end of the season. In 2003– 04 the club won the Southern League Western Division. Due to league re-organisation caused by the establishment of the Conference North and South, the club entered play-offs to be promoted to the new leagues. After beating King’s Lynn 1–0 and Merthyr Tydfil 3–0 the club was promoted to the Conference North. After a ninth-place finish in 2004–05, Redditch struggled in 2005–06, only avoiding relegation on the final day of the season. Although they won the Worcester Senior Cup beating local rivals Worcester City the following year, they only avoided relegation again after Scarborough received a 10-point penalty for going into administration. After a very difficult 2010–11 campaign in the Conference North Redditch was relegated to the Southern League Premier Division.

A brief round up of the recent results from the teams that matter Premier Division W/C 15 February 2016 On Monday, Hungerford Town missed the opportunity of moving up into third place when, after taking the lead soon after the hour, they conceded a goal seven minutes from time and another in time added on to lose 2-1 at home to Leamington. On Tuesday, leaders Poole Town took a two goal half time lead but had to settle for a point when visiting Biggleswade Town earned a 2-2 draw with two strikes in the last quarter of the game allowing second placed Chippenham Town to close the gap when a goal eight minutes from time gave them a 1-0 success at second from bottom Paulton Rovers while Redditch United, a goal up at the interval, struck four times in the second half to inflict a crushing 5-0 home defeat on Bideford and fourth placed Hitchin Town scored twice after the break to win 2-1 at St Neots Town after the home side had gone ahead from a second minute penalty. Weymouth, two down at the interval, conceded two more in the second half and crashed to a 4-1 home defeat by Chesham United while

St Neots returned to winning ways with an emphatic and well deserved home victory against Hemel Hempstead. The Visitors, who came to the Cozy Stadium in second place in the table, started well and early pressure produced two chances for Charles and King who were both denied by saves by Saints keeper Giddens, before a goal line clearance following a corner kept the score line goalless. Saints first chance fell to Hilliard who shot over from 20 yards, before Hoyte was denied by the post after meeting a Davies corner. As the first half progressed Saints created more chances, with Hilliard going close after beating two defenders before shooting just wide and then keeper Timms was quickly off his line to intercept a long ball outside his area to deny Davies who had beaten the offside trap with a run from inside his own half. Hemel continued to press forward and Parkes tested Giddens from long range and Charles was inches away from connecting with a cross
HEMEL HEMPSTEAD from Campana, who looked dangerous every time he picked up the ball and ran at the Saints defence. After forty minutes Saints took the lead when Jacob capitalised on a defensive error and his deflected shot beat Timms, going in off the underside of the crossbar. St Neots started the second half strongly and within the first ten minutes scored a further two goals, firstly Ogbonna found the net after a wicked shot from Davies had been parried away and then Jacob scored his second of the night latching onto a through ball from Hilliard. It could have been even better for Saints but Timms saved with his feet from another Ogbonna effort. Hemel responded by making three substitutions but it was Saints who could have extended their lead after Sage found Mackey but he was unable to test Timms when he seemed well placed to score. The Saints defence, marshalled by the excellent Hoyte, had defended stoutly for most of the evening, but were beaten after seventy-one
1 minutes when Parkes beat Giddens, although the Saints keeper was equal to a free kick from May as Hemel tried to find a way back in to the match and Charles missed a good chance after a cross by substitute Nolan. The game opened up in the last fifteen minutes and Saints took full advantage. Davies set up Mackey for the fourth, and then Mackey ran clear from the half way line before beating Timms to score the fifth. Hemel continued to press forward and hit the woodwork twice in the last five minutes through Parkes and Anderson but there was still time for Mackey to complete an eleven minute hat trick following good work from Hilliard and Asante.
St Neots: Giddens, Auger, Sage, Wood, Lee, Hoyte, Hilliard, Davies, Ogbonna, Mackey, Jacob. Subs: Asante (for Ogbonna 75 mins), Davis (for Sage 85 mins), Sharman (for Wood 89 mins) and Conroy. Cards: Davies (Y – 60) Auger (Y – 75) Attendance: 218 Referee: P Evans
ST NEOTS TOWN 1 HITCHIN TOWN 2 Southern League Premier Division / 17.02.2016 / Attendance: 298 / Referee: David Avent (Northampton)
Hitchin recorded a fourth consecutive league victory to cement their place in the play offs at the expense of a very disappointing St Neots. Having said that the main shortcoming of the home side was their inability to create goal scoring opportunities on the back of a hard-working and fully committed performance in midfield and defence. Hitchin are amongst the leading group in the table on merit and it was to St Neots credit that they held their visitors to just two goals but the lack of goal scoring has to be the principle concern now and this match underlined the priority of replacing the departing Tom Meechan. Although Drew Roberts is back he has not struck up an understanding with Dipo Akinyemi and the visiting goalkeeper had very little to do throughout the entire ninety minutes. There was a new signing on view for the home side with Charlie Coulson from Ilkeston FC pitched in on the right of midfield with George Casey moving to full back. Also back in defence was Jamie Anton for Matt Smyth. There was a sensational start to the match when in the first real action after just 44 seconds Josh Dawkin was fouled as he went into the penalty area and a spot kick was awarded. Some discussion ensued about who would take the kick but Drew Roberts stepped up to beat Charlie Horlock and open the scoring with his first home goal since 18th April last year. This
was only his ninth start of the current season as he works his way back to somewhere near full fitness. Hitchin were taken aback by this turn of events and too some time to settle with their only goal attempt in the first 25 minutes a narrow angled shot by Brett Donnelly blocked by Andy Wilton. Peter Clark set up Dipo Akinyemi with a through ball but he overran it and Horlock saved at his feet but gradually the visitors found their rhythm with the lively Jonny McNamara shooting over the bar before bringing a good saved from Wilton. On the half hour a Lucas Kirkpatrick cross found the head of Brett Donnelly but his effort was too high and as St Neots were penned back late in the first half Hitchin created several chances. The best of these fell to Kieran Barnes from a Kirkpatrick corner but he placed his free header high over the bar. Hitchin’s most threatening moves all seemed to involve McNamara who was giving his marker Brett Longden a torrid time and the St Neots full back picked up a yellow card five minutes before the break. The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw Hitchin camping in the St Neots half of the field and peppering the St Neots goal.
Again the best chance fell to Brett Donnelly who headed tamely over the bar and both Barnes and McNamara failed to convert chances after neat approach work. St Neots reacted well under siege with Jamie Anton and Tom Ward doing well under pressure but after 58 minutes Hitchin levelled with a rather fortune goal when a Kane Smith cross beat all those in the six yards’ box and crept in at the far post with Wilton seeming to misjudge the flight of the ball. This gave the visitors confidence and they continued to dominate and after 72 minutes the pressure paid off as Jonny McNamara bundled the ball in from close range. From that point on Hitchin played with great composure slowing the game down and passing the ball around in midfield with the protection of their slender lead clearly their priority. St Neots huffed and puffed but never really threatened even though they went to three at the back and pushed Tom Ward up as an additional attacker. Even the late introduction of two teenagers failed to fire St Neots and they can have no real complaints – beaten by a side looking capable to go on to claim a play-off place and maybe even promotion at the end of the season.
St Neots Town Wilton, Casey, Longden, Tann, Ward, Anton, Coulson, Clark (P), Roberts, Akinyemi, Dawkin Subs: Ofosu (for Coulson 77), Hobbs (for Akinyemi 89), Nurettin, Rudman and Jeckells. Cards: Longden (Y – 40) Goals: Roberts – pen (2 mins)

CHAIRMANS’ VIEWS Welcome to All Redditch players, officials and supporters Well, I have to say I feel disappointed at having lost at Home to Hitchin on Tuesday evening. I don’t buy into the fact that we are in a transitional period, I would prefer to call it a change in the way we are looking to play football but our expectations remain the same. We are in the entertainment
I will reiterate once again that the Club as a whole is in a fantastic state of play and is all moving in the right direction, in golfing terminology we are winning a number of tournaments but in the majors we are a few shots of the pace. To fix this going forward I have suggested it is all about recruitment, opportunity, desire and attitude and I’m not just talking about playing staff. It’s no secret we have an
TOM MEECHAN business and as such we want to entertain and win football matches, simple. Hitchin Town are a good side who have played the same way all season and have played well, hence the reason they are where they are. We have played a certain way all season and it hasn’t worked and as the reality of what the task in hand entails I’m becoming more and more irritated by my own lack ofHAWKINS foresight. RYAN
outstanding relationship with Stevenage FC and I for one am very excited at how this relationship is going to continue to grow and no it’s not a case of fingers crossed it’s a case of we have been in advanced discussions about how we can become real development partners for over a year now and I for one believe we have only just scratched the surface
of how this will become the life blood for the recruitment and development of talented footballers. I am mindful that this sounds a little too much like a young first team however the truth of the matters is that this is far removed from what we perceive as the way forward. In my last programme notes I made the point of suggesting we need to speak to all current players in the squad before the season’s out and that includes the more senior players. If they are with us at the end of the season it’s because there is a conversation to be had. Tom Meechan’s transfer to Newport County AFC was a learning curve for me personally, what I have been encouraged by is the fact that no deal is ideal for St Neots Town FC, that said if we get our policies correct and have a clear understanding of what our expectations are then we as a business can benefit greatly by having the best set up in non-league football. Newport for their part have been good TOM MEECHAN to talk to and we wish them and Tom every success, as far as one or two other aspects of the whole process (not with Newport’s I hasten to add) I found it a far from gratifying experience and we as a football club will not be making the same mistakes again (fingers crossed we don’t just go and make all new ones!!) Right let’s get behind the team today. Lee
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Who we are and what we can offer We are St Neots Town Learning and Sports Academy Ltd the educational arm of St Neots Town FC Ltd. Based in our new classroom on site at the football club we run a football scholarship programme that is open to both boys and girls and is aimed at post 16 year old students. We work in partnership with The SNLP (longsands and Ernulf academy schools) who deliver all academics onsite at Rowley Park. This we believe is the very best educational pathway for our scholars, the feeling that they have left school when in fact they are being tutored by school teachers from the local Academy school. Over the last few years we have taken scholars into Primary schools to help support PE lessons and after school sports. As a result of this free support we now work in partnership with Huntingdon Primary School delivering Key stage1/2 PE lessons and multi sports after school clubs and have had fantastic feedback from
all concerned. This we now charged for however what we offer is considerably more than other providers and what we charge is considerably less than other providers. We like to form partnerships with everyone we work with, how this partnership works and how it’s structured is largely determined by you and your staff. You see we could offer a fairly ridged package that ticks all the boxes you require to give your pupils the experiences taking part in sport should provide and ensure that you as a school tick all the right boxes as well however we view it slightly differently. We believe to have flexibility is essential because it allows us to explore avenues of support and interaction with your school and more importantly your pupils that you haven’t even considered was possible or available by using a sports provider.
The sky is the limit An example: Huntingdon Primary school have booked a day trip to come over to the
football club. While here they will have lessons in Maths and English (in our new classroom unit) and then participate in multi-sports on the 3G astro as well as accessing our new kids party rooms and having a grand tour of the stadium. There are no additional costs involved because to us this is what a partnership is all about. In a nut shell what we believe we can offer is unique in that we are actively involved with not only the education of the children we teach but also those that are teaching the children. There are many other benefits to be gained by forming a partnership with St Neots Learning and Sports Academy which we are more than happy to have a chat about and because we not confined by inflexibility we have the scope to action and grow any ideas that are presented to us. AFC TOTTON Stags agree Partnership with Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching AFC Totton and Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching (MLT Natural Coaching) have today announced a partnership between the two organisations.
