Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of current league leaders, Kettering Town, and we hope you have an enjoyable stay with us here this afternoon. The big games just keep on coming with today’s visit of the Poppies, just days after our monumental Emirates FA Cup victory at second placed Coalville Town and the feel-good factor around the place is going off the scale. In all the years I’ve been involved with the Club, I’ve never known a bond and never say die spirit within the team like what we have at present and long may this continue. So, we travel to Alfreton Town of the National League North next Saturday (20th October), after Tuesday’s short trip to Royston Town in the league. As I’m penning these notes, travel details are being arranged so please keep an eye out on social media and the official club website for details for those wishing to travel to Derbyshire to cheer on the boys. Today is a special day here at the club as we have a gathering of managers and players from our past, including members of the 1966 FA CUP squad and we hope they all enjoy their visit to the Premier Plus Stadium and we put on a good display against the table topping Poppies. The FA Cup magic has been fantastic and I speak on behalf of the players and staff when I say your support and praise has been nothing short of amazing and we respect and appreciate it so much. So thank you and in return we hope you’re enjoying the ride and loving the entertainment. But it’s put to the side as I’m very serious about wanting and needing this young talented side to keep improving. And whereby our adventure isn’t to be played down it’s got to be part of platform building and using the positives from it to ensure our performances are consistent in the league and every competition we enter and compete in. So again, give us the support we need and we will today again go out to compete and be relentless in looking to keep our standards high and take our cup form into the league. KETTERING TOWN FC Joined League: 1872 Chairman: Ritchie Jeune Website: www.ketteringtownfc.com A special welcome this afternoon for our next league opponents KETTERING TOWN who arrive here as league leaders. Last season they reached the play-offs after holding on to the coat tails of Champions Hereford United as the season progressed. Finishing fourth a couple of points shy of a home play-off place they travelled to Slough but were beaten 3-1 but their start to the new season showed their determination to make up for that disappointment this time around. They went through August winning all six opening league matches scoring 14 goals and conceding just three before suffering a surprise 2-1 home defeat by Leiston who are also in the play-off zone. They bounced back to win 3-1 at Alvechurch and along the way recorded FA Cup victories away at Romford and at home to AFC Mansfield. Then last Saturday they entertained Hednesford Town and became one of only four Southern League sides to go automatically into the hat for the Fourth Round Qualifying draw on Monday with a convincing 4-0 victory over Hednesford. The other three Saturday winners were Hitchin, Stourbridge and Winchester. However, the big recent news for Poppies fans is the following statement about the future of the club issued last week: “The board of directors are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement, subject to contract, for the purchase of land within Kettering for the development of a new
stadium complex. Land off Scott Road was identified as a possible site some months ago and the club along with Kettering Borough Council (KBC) have been working hard to review the option and to ultimately reach a commercial agreement. Final agreement was reached this week and we now look forward to the next phase which involves working with adjacent landowners and developing our planning application, to meet the requirements of the planning and highway authorities prior to the construction phase. Fans need to understand that the new stadium is some years away and there will be more hurdles to negotiate but the most important thing is that our journey back to Kettering has started and we can’t thank the officers and councillors at KBC enough for the support they have given the club over the last year or so”. All of us here at the Premier Plus Stadium wish them well in the pursuit of their aspirations.
CLUB HISTORY Kettering Town were originally formed in 1872, turning professional in 1891. The club graduated through twelve different leagues from 1892 until they became founder members of the Football Alliance in 1979. The club maintained its status in the top flight of semi-professional football throughout the Gola and Vauxhall sponsorships, until the 2000-01 season. Many honours found their way to Rockingham Road, winning the Midlands League title in 1896
and 1900. The Southern League Championship was won on three occasions, in 1928 and 1957 under Tommy Lawton and in 1973 under the guidance of Ron Atkinson. In the 1930’s the club won the East Midlands League and in 1948 the Poppies became Birmingham League Champions. The Conference Title has so far eluded Kettering, who have finished runners-up in 1981, 1989, 1994 and 1998. The GMAC Cup, (the non-league, league Cup) was won in 1987 and the Poppies were runnersup in 1995, then known as the Bob Lord Trophy. County competitions have been won regularly by Kettering Town, with the Northants Senior Cup won on 28 occasions and the Maunsell Cup 13 times.The FA Cup has brought success and publicity to Rockingham Road with the first round proper being reached on 41 occasions. Wembley has been reached on two occasions before. The Poppies lost 2-0 to Stafford Rangers in the 1979 FA Trophy Final. More recently the FA Trophy Final in 2000 saw the Poppies lose a closely fought final with Kingstonian 3-2. Most recently, the club were narrowly relegated on the last day of the 2000/01 season which ended 30 years in the top flight of non-league football. The Poppies made a quick return to the Conference in the 2001/02 season winning the Southern Premier League with a last-day victory at Tiverton Town under Carl Shutt - his first full season in charge. In October 2005 it was announced that longserving chairman Peter Mallinger was to hand over the reins to
a consortium consisting of Imraan Ladak, Mick Leech and England legend Paul Gascoigne. Gascoigne was installed as manager, replacing Kevin Wilson, and ex-Arsenal stalwart Paul Davis was recruited as assistant manager. In February 2006, Morell Maison was appointed Kettering Town manager, and led the team to 6th place in Nationwide North, after a run of seven wins in the last eight games. An announcement was made in May 2006 that the playing staff for 2006-07 would be full-time, and that six new signings had been made. These included ex-Tottenham starlet Darren Caskey from neighbours Rushden and Diamonds. The ambition was there for all to see, but after a roller coaster of a season, saw the Poppies fall behind eventual Champions Droylsden, with Maison sacked with just two games to go. In 2012/13 having been relegated from the Conference with a ten points deduction Kettering finished bottom of the Southern League Premier Division but the following season finished third in the Central division but lost in the play offs. Then two seasons ago they stormed through to the Central Division championship to win their way back to the Premier Division last season. Their stated ambition of a swift return to Step Two was halted as they finished sixth in the table after a strong finish – just one point and one place shy of a play-off place. Then three seasons ago they stormed through to the Central Division championship to win their way back to the Premier Division. In addition to their trials on the field of play Kettering lost their long time Rockingham Road ground in the Town and were forced to seek a ground share with neighbours Corby Town before joining up with lower league Burton Park Wanderers in a nearby village to develop their Latimer
Park ground up to the required standard.
PLAYER PROFILES DURRELL BERRY Derby born Durrell is a right back who joined the Poppies during the close season from Truro City. A strong powerful defender he has also played for Plymouth Argyle, Torquay United, Cheltenham Town and Alfreton Town. Durrell’s career started at Notts County and the Aston Villa Youth Academy’s. Durell was one of the most impressive players at the early part of last season until injury cut his season short. ANDREA BORG Andrea, a Maltese U19 and 23 international is a fast and pacey forward on loan from Peterborough United. He has made three first class appearances for the Posh and has impressed since joining the Poppies in August. JAMES BRIGHTON James is an experienced full back who has played for Cambridge United, Cambridge City and Hemel Hempstead Town. He had an outstanding pre-season and signed for the Poppies in August 2015 after impressing manager Marcus Law. His progression within the side earned him a contract with the club during the season, with a string of superb performance James was voted Player of the Season for 2015-16. James had a frustrating 2017-18 season being out for most of it through injury, fully recovered he is champing at the bit to get going again. JAHVAN DAVIDSON-MILLER Jahvan was signed during the 2018-19 pre-season campaign after impressing manager Marcus Law. He has previously played for Belper Town, Cardiff City U23’s and Derby County.
MATTHEW FOY Matthew, a young striker is on loan from Cambridge United having made his debut in the 3-1 win at Stratford Town. He has also played for Cambridge City, St Neots Town, Chelsmford City and Lowestoft Town. RHYS HOENES Rhys a midfield / striker, first came to our attention as part of the Barton Rovers side that got the better of us three and a half seasons ago and we have been keeping an eye on him ever since. Having enjoyed a goals laden spell at Royston Town, Rhys moved to Conference National South side St Albans City before ending the season at Biggleswade Town. He is one of the few players who have scored a hat-trick of penalties. He played every league game last season, chipping in with 10 goals. MARCUS KELLY Kettering born Marcus previously played for Rushden & Diamonds, Oxford United. Before joining the Poppies in November 2009. After a few cameo appearances on loan Marcus joined the Poppies on a permanent basis in January 2010. Marcus scored his first goal for the club away at Barrow as the Poppies ran out 2-0 winners. 2010-11 was a special season for Marcus as under new boss Marcus Law, he developed as an attacking full back, not only impressing his gaffer, but also he won the Supporters Player of the season and Vice –Presidents Player of the season. Carrying on from where he left off Marcus was the Poppies best player from the start of the 2011-12 season, but with crippling finances, he became the victim of the annual pre-Christmas clear out, joining rivals Mansfield Town. Marcus returned to the Poppies in January under returning boss Mark Cooper, seeing the season out, but he left the Poppies again
in May, linking up with former boss Marcus Law at Tamworth. Later he played for Forest Green Rovers, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. Marcus also played for Wrexham before making a dramatic return to the Poppies in July 2018. DION KELLY-EVANS Full back Dion was signed during the pre-season after impressing Marcus Law. He graduated through the Coventry City youth academy, making 28 appearances for the Sky Blues first team. Already Dion has showed what an excellent player he is and surprised us all with his goal scoring ability. LINDON MEIKLE Lindon a winger / striker was signed by Marcus Law from Barrow during the close season. The former England C international has also played for Eastwood Town, Mansfield Town, York City, Macclesfield Town, Alfreton Town and Southport (on loan). An exciting committed player who should prove to be a valuable asset to the squad. Lindon opened his account for the Poppies with a stunning injury time winner against Redditch United on his home debut. BEN MILNES Ben joined the Poppies from Corby Town in June 2017. A highly rated midfielder, whose career began at Leicester City, before a move to Boston United. While at Corby Ben was the Player of the Year and had an exceptional game against the Poppies in the Northants Senior Cup final at Sixfields. Ben scored the scored goal against Slough on the opening day of the season, also on his club debut. AARON O’CONNOR Aaron a much travelled experienced striker joined the Poppies in September 2016 from Stevenage Town. He
previously played for Ilkeston Town, Scunthorpe United, Grays Athletic, Mansfield Town, Rushden & Diamonds, Luton Town, Newport County and Forest Green Rovers, he also had spells at Gresley Rovers and Nuneaton Borough. Aaron had a terrific season with the Poppies ending the 2017-18 campaign as the club’s leading scorer with 38 goals, he also won the Overall Player of the Year, Player Players of the Year at the Club’s at the Club’s Presentation Evening. MASON RHINEY A forward who signed on for the Poppies during pre-season after impressing manager Marcus Law. Mason has spent the early part of his career within the Hull City youth academy. MICHAEL RICHENS Michael originally played for the Poppies on loan in 2015 making 4 appearances before returning to Hemel Hempstead. A highly rated midfielder, Michael has also played for Peterborough United, Farnborough, Whitehawk, Nuneaton Town, Stevenage, and Bishop Stortford. Michael rejoined the Poppies in June 2017. Michael opened his Poppies goal scoring account with a 35-yard equalising lob, against Northampton Town in the 2017 Maunsell Cup final. He followed that up with the goal of the season at Stratford, an absolute stunner from 35 yards. LATHANIEL ROWE-TURNER Lathaniel, a defender was signed by Marcus Law during pre-season. He has previously played for Cheltenham Town, Redditch United, Kings Lynn (all on loan from Leicester City) before signing for Torquay United. He later played for Luton Town, Alfreton Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Nuneaton Town and Chester. MICHAEL SHAMOLA. Michael is a young forward who
has previously played for Luton Town and Barton Rovers (on loan), who joined the Poppies in August 2018. BRETT SOLKHON. Brett primarily plays in midfield but has played in a variety of rolls at the club including goalkeeper. Previously he turned out for Rushden & Diamonds and has also played for Corby Town. Brett re-joined the Poppies from Brackley Town in the 2014 close season, having left the club in 2011. He was a member of the team that won the Blue Square North Championship in 2007-08 while becoming a hero with classic FA Cup goals home and away against Notts County. Throughout his first six seasons, which included representing an England Select XI and a Testimonial game against Oxford United, he was ever-present in the side proving to be one of the finest midfielders to wear a Kettering shirt. Last season he scored his first hat-trick for the club against St Ives Town, etching himself further into the history books. Brett became only the second player in the history of the club to win all of the end of season trophies at the 201415 Club Presentation Evening, as well as the first Poppies player to switch on the towns Christmas lights. He also became only the second Poppy in our history to reach 500 hundred games for the club on New Year’s Day 2018. He is also nearing 100 first class goals for the club as well, GARY STOHRER Gary signed for the Poppies in July 2017 from Frickley Athletic. A right back born in Northampton he has also played for Irchester, Long Buckby, Garforth Town, Ossett Town and Shaw Lane. An exciting prospect who has pace and can find the net when pushed forward. A valuable asset to the squad who put in some impressive performances during the 2017-18 season, scoring a brilliant individual goal against
Dunstable Town at Latimer Park. BEN TOSELAND Ben, a young defensive midfielder joined the Poppies from Northampton Town in July 2017. He had been at the Cobblers since he was 9 years old going through their youth and academy teams. Last season he was in the running for the goal of the season in the League Football Education division when he scored a wonder goal against AFC Wimbledon and repeated the dose against Farnborough with an absolute stunner.

The experienced former Republic of Ireland U18 international joined the Poppies under Marcus Law in September 2016 making his debut in the 5-1 win at St Neots Town. Paul soon established himself as the Club’s number 1 with a string of excellent passionate performances that have made him a firm fans favourite. Declan a huge centre-back joined the Poppies from Barwell in July 2018, having previously played for Hinckley United. He links up with assistant manager Richard Lavery who was with at Barwell last season.
Marcus is a former Bristol Rovers and Stafford Rangers goalkeeper who also had spells at Evesham, Coventry Sphinx, RC Warwick, Bedworth United, Rugby Town and Quorn. He originally joined the Poppies as manager in October 2010 after a breath taking time with Leicestershire side Barwell, ending his tenure with a 61 game unbeaten run. Marcus replaced Morell
PAUL WHITE Irish born goalkeeper Paul has previously played for Cork City, North Leigh, Gloucester City,
Maison’s short caretaker spell in succession to Lee Harper. But a traumatic season behind the scenes, saw many top players and staff leave the club, making his life at Rockingham Road untenable. Marcus finished the Conference National season with the Poppies in 15th place. But after eight months with Kettering he decided to leave the club and join Tamworth. He later had spells coaching at Forest Green Rovers and Shrewsbury Town before becoming Chasetown’s manager. Marcus though made a dramatic return to the Poppies in May 2015 becoming the club’s 57th all time manager, succeeding Tom Baillie and Scott Machin who had won promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier. In his first season the club finished in 6th position and 2016-17 season 9th, winning the Northants Senior Cup for the first time since 2001. He bettered that last season with the team finishing 4th, also winning the Senior Cup (again) and Maunsell Cup.

A LOT has been said over the years about disrespect in grassroots football – now it’s about changing the tone of voice to focus on the importance of Respect in the game. Respect is a positive action. Yes, there are heightened incidents which can grab the headlines but there is a lot of good work going on every week across the country. We need to make it socially unacceptable to behave badly on the touchline, whether it’s coaches or parents. Having previously been involved with Respect from a County FA’s point of view – I worked for the Suffolk FA – and also as chairman of a youth league for three years, I had my own take on what works well locally. But I was keen really keen to get an understanding about what ‘good’ looks like across the country and appreciate it’s going to be different in different places. So my first year was very much that. We did a lot of research to understand what has worked well over the last eight years but also really look forward to see where we need to position Respect strategically in order to make the greatest impact. Grassroots football covers such a vast area, so the questions were: where do we need to focus our resources time and money? What is most needed? Over the last few months we’ve really started to execute our three-year strategy for Respect.The key focus is mini soccer and youth football – U7s right up to U16s. With the Respect campaign being nearly ten years old, we’ve naturally got a whole new group of parents, coaches, volunteers and players have emerged. Ensuring the environment is right for those players, and that it is created by those parents, coaches and volunteers, is really important. A big point from the research was getting the off pitch right as much as on the pitch. We often talk about the match environment in isolation. Actually a lot of incidents can happen from social media, or from the way the changing rooms were left last time the two teams played, or it could even be the way you are welcomed when you arrive at the ground. That can go a long way to setting the tone for the rest of the day and the game ahead. So it’s looking at how coaches, parents and volunteers from both teams can work together – rather than against each other – to create that environment because, ultimately, everyone is looking for a fantastic experience. It links in to our ‘We only do Positive’ campaign. We know 90 per cent children play better with positivity. That stat isn’t necessarily surprising but it’s important people see that encouragement and a positive environment is so important. If you flip it, we know one negative experience can have a big effect on a child for lasting period of time. It’s adults creating the environment so players will enjoy the game more. This is not about being positive for positives sake. It’s about focusing on the good things players have done. In grass-roots football there will always be mixed abilities. Let’s help players love the game. Everyone develops better when they are having fun. The FA Youth Review was implemented in 2011 and really focused on making the game child friendly with 5v5, 7v7, 9v9 and more appropriate goal sizes. That’s been embraced but now it’s about building on that and topping up all the good work that has been done. We’re well aware people can drop out of the game from 14+ – so this is about giving them a really good experience so they want to keep playing. The challenge with Respect is how we bring longevity to it. We don’t just want it to be a one-off campaign. That adds value but we want to make it consistent in the game each week in all areas. We’ve got Play Your Part code of conducts which helps implement the values whatever your role is. It gives clubs a real focus to help their volunteers but, also, if there is disrespect, how to deal with it. Each month we have activations which focus on different ways of changing behaviour. So in the winter months we’re looking to pilot Positivi-tea. It’s a simple idea of people holding a cup of tea that is labelled with positive messages. The science behind it is people are less likely to shout something abusive or negative if they’re holding something that’s labelled with good messages. In January we’re going to be launching 21 Days of Positive – that’s how long it takes to break or form a new habit. We want to empower coaches and parents to engage with their children in the right way.

FA CUP THIRD ROUND QUALIFYING
St Neots Town St Neots were in the draw for the Fourth Round Qualifying of the FA Cup thanks to a dramatic added time goal on a wet afternoon at the Premier Plus Stadium. They had fallen behind in the first half before having the unexpected advantage of seeing their visitors reduced to ten men after the break, but then as a comeback beckoned they were wasteful conceding a second goal before their late recovery. So, for the second time in a fortnight their faithful followers were treated to a significant FA Cup goal deep into time added by the official, ironically as a result of blatant timewasting by the visiting side. It was another slow start for the home side, but they were up against a side lying second in their division of the Southern League who had only tasted defeat once in their last ten matches. Manager Matt Clements rang the changes from midweek restoring Matt Miles, Nabil Shariff, and Claudio Ofosu to the starting line-up, leaving Gary Wharton on the bench but being without Ben Worman who is Cup-tied and Dion SembieFerris the hero of the previous round who was handed a onematch FA Cup ban for excessive celebrations which had earned him a second yellow card in the competition this season. In front of their best crowd of the season (518) St Neots made a slow start and the visiting side had two early openings, Tom McGlinchey setting up Andrew Wright to shoot wide after just two minutes and then Lee Cox squandered a great chance ten minutes later firing directly at Harry Reynolds after being played clear in a counter-attack following two St Neots corners. As the half progressed, St Neots seemed to settle down and skipper Luke Knight had a shot deflected wide and from a lengthy Johnny

After 32 minutes there was an anxious moment for the home side when goalkeeper Reynolds left his line to gather a McGlinchey cross but missed the ball and he was relieved to see Tom Wood block the resultant effort from Tim Berridge. However, four minutes later the Coalville player made up for his disappointment when he opened the scoring firing home from close range when the St Neots defense failed to clear a free kick by Steve Towers. McGlinchey was terrorizing the St Neots defense and twice he cut in from the left to see his efforts blocked by defenders and on the stroke of half-time visiting keeper Max Smith-Varnam dropped a stinging Claudio Ofosu effort but there was no one on hand to take advantage.

There was a lively start to the second period as Shariff sent a shot just the wrong side of a post and then from a Johnny Herd corner a shot was blocked on the line. In the next St Neots attack Taylor Parr was bundled over in the penalty area but credible penalty appeals were waved away. Then after 53 minutes from another Herd corner there was an incident in the area which saw Scott McManus kick out at a home player. The Referee did not see the incident but having consulted an Assistant he issued a straight red card to McManus to reduce the visitors to ten men. St Neots quickly introduced substitute Devante Stanley to adopt a more attacking approach whilst the visitors filtered players back in defense leaving just one up front. Ten minutes after the dismissal St Neots were caught short in defense and when they failed to clear a Towers free kick, Daniel Creaney slotted the ball

Commercial Break Gary Atyes When Gary Wilson asked me to consider being the Commercial Director at the club i didn't think i would need my blood pressure and heart condition checking every few days! If Saturday wasn't bad enough Tuesday nights late late show, starring Gary Wharton, Harry Reynolds and a cast of sharp shooting penalty takers was just unreal. (who needs James Corden with all this going on!). I couldn't watch all the penalties until Johnny Herd stepped up to take the last one. I was Johnny's colts team manager from under 11 to under 15 and never seen him miss one so knew we were in safe hands! And our success (as it always does) comes with some hard work commercially for the club. Its all good though as sponsors we are chasing have suddenly reappeared, there is a great merchandising opportunity with the replica shirts and special FA cup t shirts (fingers crossed) available at today's game. Improved merchandising and an online shop are two things i intend to work on in the coming weeks. We need to prepare ourselves to be at the next level commercially in the same way as Matt would expect us to perform on the pitch at a higher level. All of this gives our football club some "nice headaches" for a change. It has been a rollercoaster ride since i arrived at the football club and Tuesday night was the icing on the cake. Perhaps the nicest thing for me that the first two people I celebrated with after Johnny slotted home his penalty were Matt and Lee. Two of the most Decent and hard working people that i have come across in my time working in sport. If anyone deserved that penalty to hit the back of the net it was them. Come on you Saints!!!
