Greenie’s Greetings With Director Mike Green "Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today‘s United Counties League Premier Division South match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of March Town United Football Club and we hope you enjoy our hospitality this afternoon“. The big games just keep on coming and today we entertain one of the clubs challenging us for promotion in the form of March Town United. The Hares, like ourselves , have been in or around the the top five all season so we know we are going to have to be at the top of our game today, as we were at their place earlier this season when were victorious when Harvey Williams scored a quite magnificent goal to take the points. Tuesday evening saw us surrender our long unbeaten run as we lost three - one at home to Godmanchester Rovers in the Senior Cup Semi Final, the game we had to replay because the referee let us make a fourth substitution two minutes from time with us leading three - nil. You work out the logic in that one. The most annoying thing on Tuesday evening was the fact that we had players suffer injuries in a game which, in my opinion, should not have had to take place. Either expel us from the competition or make the result stand as the substitute did not have an influence on the result. All very disappointing but there you go, that’s local non league football. At the same time, we wish Goddy all the best in the final versus St Ives Town in April. Back to today and we will need to be on our game both on and off the pitch if we are to get a positive result against the Hares, who may well have a couple of ex Saints in the team, namely Joe Rider and Jonah Gill, so grab you friends, family and work colleagues and let‘s get the place rocking again.

Boardroom Gossip From The Dugout With Chairman BarryCameron Cavilla With Manager Mawer " I’d like to welcome everyone associated with March Town to the Premier Plus stadium. It was a warm summers day when we went to March in the league in the reverse fixture. They are a side I hugely admire in the level, the way they go about their business makes them very difficult to play against“. One defeat in ten in the league shows the level of confidence they will have coming to us and I am sure it will be nice for the fans to see a familiar face in Joe Rider, who will be returning for the first time since leaving in the summer. We are now in a huge period playing against alot of the sides around us, the vast majority are at home but that counts for nothing, as our record shows we are better on the road. We said at the start of the season about making our home patch a fortress and that’s the challenge I have now given the boys over the next set of games.

We are at the business end of the season and have eleven league games in which will determine the outcome of thirty-eight games of graft and hard work. If we want to be a success come the end, we have to show the togetherness we have shown in the last six months. I believe there will be ups and downs still and twists and turns but we have to make sure come April, we are in a position how hard work deserves and nothing else. The disappointment of Saturday and Tuesday night we have to use as a wake up call. To say at this level no matter who you are or what run you’re on you have no define right to go and win any football match unless you win the battle and I would say we haven’t in them games. But we will puff our chests out and come out swinging. In our last home league game against Lutterworth Town, I thought the roof was going to lift off the stands, and I have no doubt it will be the same come Saturday.

A magnificent hat trick in just twelve minutes of extra time by Gary Walker propelled St Neots into their second Cup Final of the season at the expense of reigning UCL champions Cogenhoe on Tuesday evening at Rowley Park. The League Cup Final on 27th April will therefore be against Yaxley in the first ever UCL Final involving two Huntingdonshire sides. It was a stubbornly defiant performance by St Neots short of three or four first choice players and typifies the character instilled in the side by Manager Steve Kuhne. Cogenhoe had already beaten the Saints twice this season home and away in the league, but this was a Cup Tie to remember as both sides adopted a swift raiding attacking approach to the match. The only difficult thing to explain was why more than the first hour was goalless because both sides created chances, but their finishing was disappointing. St Neots began well creating early chances but visiting keeper Pete Earl did well to parry a low shot by Danny Griggs and saved well from Gary Walker. At the other end James Thatcher headed tamely over the bar from a free kick and Steve Young saved bravely at the feet of Tom McGowan. Nicky Hurst up for a set piece headed narrowly wide and when Steve Diggin caught the St Neots defence square to go clear his finish did not bother the well-placed Young. The momentum stayed high until half time but upon the restart both sides adopted a more cautious approach. Clearly the first goal was going to be significant, and it arrived after 71 minutes from an unexpected source. A Matt Endersby corner was only cleared as far as Ricky Dear some 25 yards from goal and his gentle lob goalwards seemed to catch everyone by surprise and the visiting keeper only flapped at the ball that finished up in the net. In their euphoria St Neots were caught by a sucker punch for within forty seconds Cameron Clark upended Elliot Sandy and from the penalty spot Darren Collins levelled the scores. Both sides had a late opening to finish the tie in normal time but Andre Maltay’ s close range header was saved, and Steve Young blocked Steve Diggin’s low drive.

The stalemate was quickly broken in the first minute of extra time when a neat chip by Ricky Dear over the defence found Gary Walker who put his side ahead with an angled shot. James Hatch almost increased the lead heading wide from Matt Endersby’s free kick, but it was Endersby who laid on the important third goal after 96 minutes when Nicky Hurst headed down his free kick for Gary Walker to score from close range. Cogenhoe now had to commit themselves to attack, and this left gaps at the back and two minutes before the end of the first period of extra time Gary Walker completed his second hat trick of the season showing great control to ghost past the last defender to make the score 4-1. If St Neots then thought. they had done enough to cruise through the final fifteen minutes they were wrong as Cogenhoe mounted a fierce effort to retrieve their position. Now Steve Young with two magnificent saves broke their hearts and skipper Nicky Hurst was magnificent as he rallied his defence to earn that coveted Cup Final place – the Saints second appearance in that Final in three seasons. Year founded: 1885 Chairman: Lee Brownlow Club Website: www.marchtownunited.co.uk GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS MARCH TOWN FOR OUR THIRD MEETING OF THE SEASON Not having played March since our club reformation in 1991until this season, this afternoon will be our third meeting with the Hares in less than six months! Our two previous meetings with March have been at the GER Sports Ground so today we are pleased to welcome their players, officials, and supporters to the Premier Plus Stadium. The record shows one win apiece in our two recent meetings. In August in a closely fought encounter a goal from Harvey Williams gave us three important league points but around six weeks later March gained some revenge with a 4-1 Hinchingbrooke Cup victory. Our visitors had an almost perfect start to their season winning their first four league matches and being ever present in the top five places in the table since day one. However, their league form has taken a slight dip with four wins and two draws in their last six matches. Their cup form has also been disappointing. First round exits from their three principal competitions have seen them lose away at Wisbech Town in the FA Cup extra preliminary round, at home to Mildenhall in the second round qualifying of the FA Vase, and away at Aylestone Park in the League Cup. However, they have progressed to the semi-final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup beating St Neots and Whittlesey and they also beat Great Shelford in the Cambridgeshire Intermediate Cup. Last Saturday March were forced to watch from the sidelines when their scheduled vital home tie with high flying Racing Club Warwick was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. So, a vital match for both sides at a critical point in the season with the top five places in the table changing from week to week. Footnote Fifteen weeks ago, on 11th November when we lost away at Wellingborough Town, we dropped to fourth in the league table. Now more than three months later we are undefeated in eleven consecutive league matches but are still fourth in the table! How competitive is this Division?? Seasons Past - With John Walker This Edition Focuses on Season 2000/01

ST NEOTS TOWN FC 2000/2001 SEASON This is another of our historical records, highlighting this time another season at our original Rowley Park stadium depicting both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. It was the start of the New Millennium and the team celebrated with a glut of goals. The senior team scored 97 in just 40 matches (plus 31 in 13 cup matches) – the best in any Step Five season for around 40 years prior to our promotion year to Step Four in the 2010/11 season. This was because we had three strikers, Vince Petty, Paul Carey and Wes Byrne all of whom finished with more than twenty goals apiece – 97 being the second best tally in the UCL Premier Division that season despite the team finishing fifth in the table eleven points off top spot. Locally we completed a league double over Eynesbury Rovers for the first time for 23 years, and Rovers were relegated from the Premier Division after a stay of 24 seasons! League

Our exciting 7-5 home victory over Northampton Spencer was the biggest goals tally in a UCL match that season and we followed it up with an 8-1 victory over Long Buckby. The team recorded its best league defensive record at Step Five (just nine league defeats in 40 matches) since the 1976/77 – 24 years previously. We failed to win a trophy after losing to Somersham at Warboys in the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup Final, but several of our first team players including Vince Petty and Iain Parr picked up Scott Gatty Cup winners medals with St Neots RAFA Club. Reserve side finished 5th/21 in their league. St Neots retained their outside hopes of honours this season when they mounted a stunning second half comeback to beat a determined Godmanchester side and preserve their unbeaten home record. After conceding two goals in the five minutes before the break they introduced substitute Caleb Wright in the second half, and he responded with his second hat trick of the season to clinch the points and send his side six points clear at the head of the table. However, second placed Deeping still have four matches in hand. The first half was fiercely contested with both sides committed to attacking football. If St Neots shaded possession the visitors looked more dangerous on the break. An early effort by Rocco Smith for the home side was only just too high whilst Oliver Chubb went close at the other end. The final 15 minutes of the first half saw the best of the action. From a corner St Neots skipper Adam Baker brought a fingertip save from the visiting keeper but at the other end in a counter-attack Alex Bent had to be at his best to keep out an effort from Robert Cristica.The same visiting player was also close with a free kick just over the bar. Then in the five minutes before the break the visitors really gave themselves a great start. After 40 minutes a superb free kick from 26 yards by Cristica opened the scoring and three minutes later very poor defending let in Oliver Chubb for a second goal. Half time changes saw St Neots send on substitute Caleb Wright and he was to improve their fortunes.After Bent had made an important early save to deny the visitors a third goal, Wright pulled one back for the home side just past the hour with a smart finish. The visitors defended well as St Neots upped the pressure but after 79 minutes a header by Wright from a corner levelled the scores to put St Neots well on top. However, it was a minute into added time when Wright completed his hat trick to earn full points for his side. John Walker's Match Report LUTTERWORTH TOWN (H) 17-02-2024

ST NEOTS TOWN 2 LUTTERWORTH TOWN 2 This was definitely a case of two points lost and not one point gained as a result of which St Neots slipped one place in the league table to fourth.They did recover twice from being behind to finish with a point and prolong their unbeaten run to twelve matches, but they missed a penalty and conceded two sloppy goals against opponents who had not won away from home since 25th October. With two further consecutive home league matches to come against top five opponents they must both sharpen up their attack and tighten up their defence if they are to further their ambition of promotion back to Step Four. Having last played a home league match six weeks previous this should have been a welcome home in front of a good crowd of 355 but most went home disappointed. Now they face successive Saturday visits from two of their promotion rivals and they will look for an all-round improvement in those matches. Manager Cameron Mawer opted for two team changes recalling Chris Tavernier and Ollie Brookes for Dean Dummett and Nathan George. It was a disappointing fairly low-key first half with neither side looking likely to dominate the other. From a 19th minutes Murphy Culkin cross, Rhys Thorpe got clear of his marker buy could only head over an open net and two minutes later Jordan Brown went clear only for visiting keeper Warren Butlin to save bravely at his feet. The nearest to a first half breakthrough came after 23 minutes when from a Harvey Williams corner defender Charlie Bowen brough a full length save from the visiting keeper. Too many of St Neots better attacks were ended by the offside flag and the visiting side was determined to break up the more promising openings at any cost picking up two first half cautions. The second half was a different contest. St Neots had to wind behind them and dominated proceedings but fell behind against the run of play after 54 minutes to a clumsy tackle that conceded a penalty with Luke Wilson the marksman. However, four minutes later the scores were levelled when Rhys Thorpe got a near post touch on a long Culkin free kick to put the home side back in the match. Bowen then got the ball in the net from a corner but was penalised for pushing and from another Culkin free kick the visiting keeper produced the save of the match at the expense of a corner. St Neots should then have gone ahead when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Thorpe disappointingly fired over the bar after 70 minutes and three minutes later Hine Wilson regained the lead for the visitors with a smart near post finish.That set up a grandstand finish for the home side who snatched a late second equaliser three minutes from time from Jordan Brown after James Hatch had hit the woodwork.

Substitute Dammy Nickels saw a net bound shot deflected over the bar and both sides hot the woodwork in a frantic nine minutes of added time.The visitors returned home delighted with their point and St Neots have some serious work to do.

St Neots went into this match looking to extend an unbeaten run of twelve matches.However, this cannot be regarded as ‘unlucky 13’. St Neots were well beaten by a side that they had already defeated three times this season, but this replay of the Senior Cup semi-final ordered by the Huntingdonshire FA was almost a one-way display by a confident visiting side well deserving of their appearance in the final later this season – at St Neots! The home side probably went into the match in an overconfident mood after their previous victories, but the visiting side clearly had other ideas. Having raced into an early two goals lead they out thought and out played their hosts leaving St Neots’ confidence in tatters. With Rhys Thorpe cup-tied and Jordan Brown unavailable the home attack looked short of ideas and threat, but it was their defence that must bear the brunt of this disaster for conceding three poor goals. Tom Rowley and Magloire Muyembe came in for the two absent strikers and the only other change saw Dammy Nickels preferred to Tommy Reynolds at full back. The visitors dominated the first half hour after Alfie Turner had squandered the first real opening after just seven minutes firing wildly over the crossbar.They then settled down to produce some significant finishing to stroll into a two goals lead. After eleven minutes visiting striker Mani Gbejuade showed persistence to out manoeuvre his marker to put the visitors in front and before St Neots had shown any come-back, five minutes later a quick break saw Alfie Turner go past stranded home keeper James Goff to double the lead. A significant response was required from the home side, but their only threat came from Harvey Williams who headed over the bar following a corner. Visiting keeper Ben Newton was in fine form saving from James Hatch and dominating his penalty area as St Neots tried to respond but the main home threat was blunted when Williams was fouled for a third time and forced the leave the field – Israel Ajana substituting. St Neots needed to rethink their approach, so they brought on Ayomide Akinbobola to add some threatening pace in attack.

A third substitution shortly after the break was St Neots final throw of the dice but they made little headway with attempts by Dammy Nickells and Magloire Muyembe off target and the assured Newton saved well from Charlie Bown following a corner. Newton then saved well again from James Hatch and after reshaping their attack with substitutions, the visitors then effectively clinched the result with a third goal on the break as substitute Sammy Fisher set up Mani Gbejuade for his second goal with the St Neots defence is disarray. In 90th minute St Neots had the ball in the net but saw their efforts ruled out but they persisted and five minutes into added time substitute Ayomide Akinbobola claimed his second goal for the side – but it was little consolation at the end of a performance best forgotten St Neots Town: Goff, Nickels, Culkin, Parker, Brookes, Bowen, Rowley, Tavernier, Hatch, Muyembe, Williams Subs: Ajana (for Williams 59 mins), Akinbobola (for Rowley 45+2 mins), Dummett (for Tavernier 55 mins), Reynolds, and Black. March Town played on several grounds in the early 1880’s before sharing a ground with March Town Cricket Club at The Avenue. March Town played there until after the war. As founder members of the Isle of Ely Football League, March played in that League until joining the Peterborough & District League. After the war they added `United’ to the Clubs’ title, reflecting the move to the GER sports ground in Robingoodfellows Lane. After an unsuccessful spell in the United Counties League, March appointed ex- Norwich City and Notts County player, Oscar Hold as Manager and after two seasons won the UCL Championship. In the 1955-56 season, March joined the Eastern Counties League and finished runners-up to Peterborough United Reserves. They finished runners-up to Spurs `A’ in the 1960-61 season but had to wait until the 1987-88 season to lift the Championship. March have won the League Cup once, beating Spurs 3-2 in a two-leg final, with the second leg being played at White Hart Lane. The Hares have reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup twice, going out to Brentford 4-0 in the 1956-57 season and more recently losing 2-0 at Swindon (1977-78 season). They have jointly held the East Anglian cup with Barking in 1953-54. March Town now runs three senior sides and a Ladies Team. The 1st team play in the Thurlow Nunn (Eastern) Division One North, whilst the Reserves, A Team and ladies teams play in the Cambridgeshire Leagues March Town also has a thriving Youth set up, with the under 18’s playing in the Thurlow Nunn League.
