Today we extend a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Newport Pagnell Town and we hope you enjoy our hospitality here this Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.
These notes were penned prior to Saturday's trip to Lutterworth Town so obviously I hope that pre match today, we are all talking about another which keeps us at the top of the table and our phenomenal start to the season intact. However, we are not naive enough to think that we are going to do an Arsenal and go unbeaten all season. We know that the run will end at some point, maybe today, maybe already has done but whatever happens, the start to the season has been a fantastic time to be connected with the Club, whether it be a supporter, player, member of the management team or a board member. The Club has been brought back together, from top to bottom by events on and off the pitch and that in itself has been a major win. There will be ups and downs to come for sure, so lets enjoy the good times and stick together during the low.

You can only respect what the football club has done for the past two years getting to Wembley twice, unfortunately losing out last time round. To get to two back to back finals is some achievement and I have no doubt they will have high hopes in the league this season with some good players at their disposal.
However for us, we stand at 5 games played and 5 wins in the league, but for me I don’t think about league position or where we might finish, I focus on the next game. I hope the fans can start to see what a Cameron Mawer side looks like, our first half performance against Desborough was without doubt the best performance of the season, in terms of going forward. Last Saturday’s win at March Town showed a completely different side to our game.
I understand we can’t be at our fluid best eve season targets we have to be able to grind ou going to March and picking up 3 points, so rig themselves as it’s about the small wins and e easy to come by. The following and support m received so far has been amazing and I’ll con successful. ST NEOTS TOWN 2 STRATFORD TOWN 2
St Neots twice came from behind to share the spoils with league new boys Stratford Town but will be disappointed with the outcome. When you have more possession and more chances than the opposition you should push home that advantage but St Neots fell short. Stratford have found their feet quickly at the higher level and looked a well organised unit and could have snatched a surprise winning goal deep into injury time but St Neots will point to a shot off the woodwork and two goal line clearances that might have earned them full points. Once again the home side were indebted to the finishing skills of Tom Meechan who claimed both goals to take his tally to eight in just five outings. The one change in the home starting line-up saw Nathan Frater back to replace Lee Clarke who failed a late fitness test.
The first half was end to end but produced surprisingly few open chances.Stratford central defensive pairing of Marcel Simpson and Liam Francis looked well in control when St Neots threatened and at the other end Danny Gay never had a direct shot to bother him before the break. Nathan Frater had an early shot blocked following a Wilkinson cross and Stratford’s only early threating move saw Gay sprint from his area to clear from the feet of Edwin Ahenkora. Tom Meechan off balance shot wide and a blockbusting shot by Ryan Hawkins was too hot for Andy Kemp to hold but a defender produced a last ditch clearance.Isaac Galliford tried his luck from the left with a crossgoal shot but Adkins cleared off the line and at the other end Ahenkorah fired into the side netting after Stratford’s best first half attack. Just before the break St Neots carved out two more chances but Meechan saw Kemp out to field his cross with Hawkins poised on the far post and then Meechan set up Galliford whose hurried shot went well wide of target.
The second half was a much more open affair. After 50 minutes Hawkins had a good shout for a penalty waved away after he had been baulked by Simpson and two minutes later slightly against the run of play Stratford went ahead. St Neots conceded a free kick 30 yards in an almost central position and despite building a three man defensive wall they saw Robert Thompson-Brown strike the ball inside the wall and beyond the despairing dive of Danny Gay.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Saturday 22nd August 2015
This setback seemed to inspire St Neots to greater effort and a cross-cum shot by Hawkins went over the head of Kemp to deflect off the top of the cross bar. Meechan volleyed wide and Hawkins shot over the bar but St Neots were on top and deservedly levelled after 64 minutes when Mat Mitchel-King headed down a Tom Ward free kick and Tom Meechan netted from a narrow angle. With substitutions by both sides the game lost some rhythm and after 71 minutes Stratford regained the lead as substitute Tyrone Fagan knocked down a Simeon Tulloch cross for Joe Halsall to force the ball home. However within sixty seconds parity was regained as from a great cross by Bamoussa Cisse who had outwitted his marker close to the bye line Tom Meechan was perfectly placed to net his second goal of the game. He might have had a hat trick in the next attack but clear of the defence he was cynically brought down outside the area by goalkeeper Kemp who seemed very fortunate only to be shown a yellow card. As the game moved into added time both sides could have snatched a match winning goal. For St Neots Tom Ward produced a spectacular goal line clearance at the expense of a corner and substitute Luke Trotman making his home debut saw his shot rebound off the legs of a defender. It must be seen as two points lost as St Neots continue to seek their first Saturday afternoon victory of the season.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR OLD FRIENDS FROM NEWPORT PAGNELL FOR THEIR FIRST VISIT SINCE THE 2010/11 SEASON
Recently Pagnell have highlighted their history with two end of season trips to Wembley Stadium for consecutive FA Vase Finals. In May 2022 they defeated Littlehampton Town 3-0 to lift the trophy returning twelve months later but narrowly losing their crown to Ascot United by a goal to nil.Two former St Neots players – James Sage and Ben Ford – featured for Pagnell at the famous stadium just three months ago. They have become known as the penalty champions having won six penalty shoot outs in their past two Vase campaigns. Their success in the national competition has probably cost them league honours because after a crowded fixture list last season they finished third behind promoted sides Coventry Sphinx and Rugby Town and the previous season they were fifth with last seasons promoted sides ahead of them in third and fourth.
This season Pagnell lost their opening game at March Town but defeated the fancied Wellingborough side in midweek. They then bowed out of the FA Cup by the odd goal in three at AFC Dunstable. Since then. three consecutive home victories over Lutterworth Town (2-1), Easington Sports (2-0), and Eynesbury Rovers (3-2) has lifted them to sixth in the league table.
Previous meetings of our teams:
We played Newport Pagnell in eleven of the sixteen seasons between 1995/96 and 2010/11 during our spell in the UCL after our return to senior level. In addition, we faced then twice in the league KO Cup in the 1994/95 and 2003/04 seasons – both at home and winning both!
In the league our record was: Played 22 Won 9 Drawn 4 Lost 9 Goals for 40 Goals against 36
Pagnell won only one of their first nine visits to St Neots, but the overall record above shows how evenly matches our two sides are. Enjoy the match.

NEWPORT PAGNELL 1 ST NEOTS TOWN 1
One moment of unjustified madness threatened to derail St Neots season at Newport Pagnell. After 37 minutes goalkeeper Luke McShane was clearly fouled as he went up to collect a high cross but the ball broke loose to a defender and was cleared and play continued. However McShane was clearly upset and fired a salvo of abuse towards the Referee who stopped play and administered a red card. After debate St Neots opted to give the goalkeepers jersey to midfielder Rob Hughes who was on the substitutes’ bench so Lewis Hilliard was sacrificed. That incident could have cost St Neots their unbeaten league record but far more drama was to unfold. Trailing 1-0 at the break St Neots pulled back level with yet another Shane Tolley goal before new signing Stefan Moore was pulled down in the area but had his penalty kick saved. With two minutes of normal time remaining St Neots were reduced to nine men when Will Fordham was sent off for a tackle on the edge of the penalty area and in added time Stefan Moore looked lucky only to pick up a yellow card after appearing to elbow an opponent and finally Adam Jones who had been substituted after picking up an injury was shown the red card as he sat on the bench apparently for abusing an Assistant Referee.
There was also a football match played and St Neots began well against a side with a 100% home record who were breathing down their necks at start of play. An early clever dummy by Stefan More saw him go clear but home keeper Mark Osbourne blocked well and Lewis Hilliard brought a good save from the keeper with a low shot. Pagnell looked lively on the break and their leading scorer Daren Dykes forced McShane into a parried save. Darren Lynch was left unmarked at the far post but curled his shot wide of the far post and then Shane Tolley had a shot cleared off the line and Dan Jacob brought another good save from Osbourne at the expense of a corner. Dykes had the ball in the net for Pagnell but was ruled offside and then the first sending off eight minutes before half time left St Neots looking ragged and confused. Hughes first action in the yellow jersey was to pull off the save of the match to turn a pile driver of a shot from Dykes around for a corner but a minute later he was helpless as Dykes ran on to a through ball to slot the ball past him.

To their credit St Neots started the second half very positively and within two minutes they were level as Shane Tolley produced an angled shot from wide on the left that sailed over Osbourne and into the net. After 53 minutes Moore was pulled down in the area by the home keeper who amazingly avoided any punishment other than facing a poorly taken penalty kick from Moore that he comfortably pushed away. For a while St Neots then pulled Tolley back into midfield and were happy to defend and the work rate and effectiveness of the St Neots back four kept them comfortably in the match. Pagnell were unable to get a significant shot at the stand-in St Neots keeper with visiting skipper Glen Fuff winning everything in the air. Stefan Moore broke away to send the ball across the face of goal but no-one was forward enough to get the required final touch and then with two minutes of normal time left Will Fordham was sent off after upending Jordan Spruce. Pagnell then threw everything at their nine-man visiting side but failed to create any real chances to snatch a winner and as St Neots left the field, their single point taking them back to the top of the table, they heard that rivals Kings Lynn had been beaten for the second time this season – at Deeping Rangers.

ST NEOTS TOWN FC 1994/95 SEASON
This is the third of our historical records, highlighting what was our first season at our brandnew Rowley Park depicting both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. This was a season to savour in the lower Division of the United Counties League. Our squad which had been assembled during our four years in the Huntingdonshire/Cambridgeshire leagues at Step Seven under Manager Guy Loveday was largely retained and given the chance to prove themselves at the higher level – and they did just that! They romped to the league title in their first season back at Senior level scoring a record breaking 147 goals in just 47 league and cup matches to move up to the Premier Division of the UCL which they had left seven seasons earlier. One unusual honour was picking up the runners-up medals in the rarely played for UCL Benevolent Cup.
League: UCL Division One

We completed a memorable league ‘double’ over Harrowby United beating them 13-0 at home (Steve Galbraith scoring four goals) and 9-1 away.
Our attacking approach to the game meant we conceded 41 goals in our 36 league matches but still finished with a goals difference of +78.
We beat higher graded Newport Pagnell in the league KO Cup but lost in the third round and also reached the third round of the Hunts Senior Cup – beaten in a replay by another higher graded side – Godmanchester Rovers.
Our youthful Reserve side finished in the top half of the League table.
Our goal scoring record, as mentioned was outstanding with the leading scorers as follows:

ST NEOTS U18 4 MARCH TOWN U18 1
With only three of last season’s players in his starting line-up Manager Simon Trigg must have been delighted that his reshaped side began their new league campaign with three points. Opponents March Town looked a much better side than that which finished seventh last season and the home side had to rely on two late goals from substitute Harleigh Camfield to confirm the final convincing scoreline. The visitors created the first opening of the match after just four minutes when Harrison Graham was robbed by Jesse Cowley forcing Alex Bent into early action. However, St Neots took the lead after 14 minutes when Caleb Wright went past his marker to cross for Will Jolly to net with a well-placed finish. March then enjoyed a good spell of possession but lacked a significant finish and then Nigel Coleman fired wide after neat work by Jolly. Graham then made a fine run from his own half to set up Jolley but visiting keeper Matthew Oakey responded with a full length save.Eight minutes before the break some hesitant home defending let in Samuel Pond who levelled the scores with a sharp finish. The half ended with Jolley beating his man but shooting wide.
The second half was just six minutes old when the lively Caleb Wright picked up a lengthy clearance from Bent and held off a challenge to restore St Neots lead. The game became very competitive with two players from each side finding their names in the Referee’ notebook and the visiting keeper then did well to save another net bound effort from Wright. St Neots then almost extended their lead when lively substitute Harleigh Camfield saw an angled shot deflect from the far post with the visiting keeper beaten. In a break against the run of play Bailey Christian went clear of the St Neots defence but put his shot high over the bar and then St Neots were reduced to ten men when Rocco Smith was sent off for a remark directed at the Referee. As the visiting side tired in the 90th minute Harleigh Camfield put the result beyond doubt after a slick move split the visiting defence and the same St Neots played added a fourth goal six minutes into added time.

Desborough Town (H) 15-08-2023
United Counties League Premier Division South ST NEOTS TOWN 5 DESBOROUGH TOWN 1
An unchanged St Neots side replicated Desborough’s last league visit to the town as they dominated the first half of this match scoring four goals without reply, finishing up on that occasion scoring ten goals. However, this victory turned out to be less dramatic than that occasion when the match finished 10-0 in St Neots’ favour. After the break in front of a record midweek crowd of 274 spectators, there was less excitement as the visitors gamely hit back but St Neots had the last word with an added time fifth goal. The result helped them to retain their top spot in the league table – one of just two sides still with a 100% record, the other being March Town who defeated Eynesbury Rovers, and the two meet this Saturday in a show down at March. Manager Cameron Mawer was delighted with his side as he presided over his first home midweek fixture.
Full back Dammy Nickells featured in St Neots first attack in the first sixty seconds, but he saw his shot blocked by a defender and in the next home attack a Tom Rowley effort was deflected for a corner. However, St Neots early pressure was maintained and after 18 minutes they took the lead when a Rowley cross from close to the bye line was converted by Sam Johnson for his first goal at home. Lorrell Smith then forced a full length save from visiting keeper Adam Honour, and Johnson sent a free kick narrowly over the bar. Then in a purple seven minutes spell midway through the first half a rampant St Neots side added three further goals. Lorrell Smith scored the first, latching onto a through pass from James Hatch to score with an angled finish, and then Hatch added the third goal with Johnson the provider. It was 4-0 after 33 minutes as Dammy Nickells added his name to the score sheet with a lengthy cross-cum-shot that evaded several players in the six yards box to creep in at the far post – his first goal for the club. Apart from a goal line clearance by skipper Kyle Lincoln from a rare visitors’ attack there was little other notable first half action.
Desborough came out after the break seemingly determined to make up for a poor first half showing. Will Russell forced a smart save from James Goff, and the keeper then had to dive bravely at the feet of James Hamill to break up a Desborough attack. St Neots introduced substitute Israel Ajana their goal scorer from the weekend, and he was quickly in action beating three players on the right to bring a full length save from Honour at the expense of a corner.
John Walker's Match Report
Desborough Town (H) 15-08-2023
Further substitutions by both sides followed and the match lost some intenseness but after 71 minutes Desborough were rewarded for their efforts when Goff left his line to gather a high cross but failed to collect leaving Will Russell with a simple tapin goal for the visitors. This appeared to jerk St Neots into a more positive approach and substitute Don Lawless tested the visiting keeper. Goff made up for his earlier error with an impressive save to deny Archie Elmore a second Desborough goal from a well-placed free kick and as the match moved into added time Dom Lawless claimed his first goal of the campaign chipping a shot over the visiting keeper to complete the scoring.

MARCH TOWN 0 ST NEOTS TOWN 1
In a hard-fought match between the two unbeaten teams at the top of the league table St Neots came out winners after a tactical second half battle. Having led by a goal to nil at the break, Manager Cameron Mawer manipulated his side in the second half to repel all the best efforts of a determined host side that only surrendered their 100% league record reluctantly. The Manager made just the one change from his winning midweek line-up restoring the fit-again Harvey Williams to the side for Sam Johnson and significantly it was the returning player that claimed the match-winning goal. Skilfully defensively marshalled by skipper Kyle Lincoln, St Neots had to pull out all the stops to retain their unbeaten record with goalkeeper James Goff producing two breathtaking saves as the home side piled on the pressure in the closing minutes of the second half.
St Neots put themselves in pole position with a fifteenth minute goal – the first fired in anger at either end. Receiving the ball around the half-way line the speedy Harvey Williams beat his marker around the outside before cutting in a to fire a low shot just inside the neat post past former St Neots keeper Jonah Gill. Other than that highlight, the first 25 minutes were a tactical battle between two sides prepared to probe patiently in search of an opening but with both defences firm and confident there was little goalmouth action. The first notable attempt on goal by the home side came after 26 minutes when a Craig Gillies effort was wide of its target. St Neots then thought they should have had a penalty when Tom Rowley tumbled in the penalty area but the Referee waved play on. Former Saint Declan Rogers shot over the bar but then March lost central defender Danny Emmington stretchered off after sustaining a knee injury. At the end of the first half both Vitor Vaz and Josh Burrows were both wide of the target for March with efforts from set piece attacks.

March Town United (A) 19-08-2023
After a Burrows header had rebounded from the crossbar at the start of the second half, St Neots decided to alter their tactics towards a more defensive stance, and they took off striker Lorrell Smith introducing Dean Dummett in a strengthened midfield with the hardworking James Hatch left to forage up front. James Goff had to be at his best to keep out a closerange effort from Matty Foy and then he distinguished himself further with a top notch save to deny Jack Saunders, the most dangerous home player. Up front Hatch had a net bound volley blocked by a defender and then Sam Green squandered a good March chance shooting wide when well placed. The home side’s best chance of a late equaliser was denied by Goff when he turned a Vaz header from a corner around a post at full stretch. Substitute Dom Lawless was close to a second St Neots goal in the final moments.

NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN
NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN FC HISTORY
The first recorded football team in Newport Pagnell dates back to 1874 and the town has had many different teams since then. The modern club that we know today was formed in 1963 by a few young lads because they wanted a regular game of football. From such humble beginnings to contesting two consecutive FA Vase finals at Wembley Stadium it is fair to say that it has been an eventful and exciting journey.
Newport Pagnell Wanderers entered a team in the North Bucks Minor League in their first season, playing home games on Bury Field Common. The following year saw the formation of a Senior team, they entered the North Bucks League and won Division 3 in their second season. Soon after that they won Division 2 and Division 1 (three times) in consecutive years. In the 1971-72 season they joined the South Midlands League, temporarily playing home matches at the Youth Club. Then in 1972 the club moved to the new facilities at the Willen Road Sports Ground, changing their name to Newport Pagnell Town the following season. In 1973-74 Newport Pagnell Town joined Division 2 of the United Counties League and won promotion to Division 1 in 1974-75. They won the Division 1 Championship.
in 1981-82 and were promoted to the Premier Division. They were relegated in 1985-86, promoted back to the Premier Division in 1991-92 and then relegated again in 1996-97. The club won the Division 1 Championship in 2001-02 and remained in the Premier Division until the FA moved the club into the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League in 2019-20. Following two curtailed seasons the FA moved Newport back into the United Counties League Premier Division South in 2021-22.
Our best FA Cup achievement was to reach the Second Qualifying Round in 2008-09. Newport have performed well in the Berks & Bucks FA County cups winning the Senior Trophy In 2009-10 and 2010-11, Intermediate Cup in 2001-02 and the Reserve Team won the Junior Cup in 1982-83. The club’s major achievement to date is, without doubt, winning the Buildbase FA Vase in 2022. Following a club record crowd of 1,858 at Willen Road for the exciting semi-final victory over Hamworthy United, more than 7,500 Newport Pagnell Town supporters travelled to Wembley to see the impressive 3-0 win over Littlehampton Town in the final. Then the following season this achievement was almost repeated when the Swans once again got to the FA Vase final. Newport once again sold their entire allocation of tickets, although this time a very well organised Ascot United side went on to lift the cup winning 1-0.

NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN FC HISTORY (continued)
Reaching two consecutive Wembley finals is something we never thought would happen in our wildest dreams.
As far back as 1936 Newport Pagnell has had a Women’s team and there has been various teams over the years since. In the last couple of years, the Women’s team has been re-established and in 2022-23 they were Champions of the Thames Valley Counties League Division 3.
They have been promoted to the East Midlands Regional League Division 1 South for the 2023-24 season and will also enter the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.
Newport run Bobicat & Bearcat Disability Teams and has around 30 youth teams for boys and girls. The club is passionate about providing a continuous pathway from youth to senior teams and many of this season’s Senior players have progressed from our Youth Section.
