Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium – Home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Emirates FA Challenge Cup Second Round Qualifying tie. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of ROMULUS FC and we hope your brief visit to St Neots is a pleasant one. Well here we go then, another huge game for the club and of course our opponents, with progression to the next round at stake and also the small matter of a prize pot of nine thousand pounds awaiting today’s victors. Three very good victories on the spin now for the lads with our League Cup win over Bedford, our thrilling 2-1 win over Bishops Stortford in the last round and Saturday’s superb 3-1 demolition of previously unbeaten Banbury United, so it looks like the lads are hitting form just at the right time. Saturday saw striker Nabil Shariff return to the club and he started where he left off last season by notching twice on his (second) debut and was joined on the scoresheet by Dylan Williams who added another trademark strike from outside the box. Today’s visitors arrive here having beaten Belper Town in the last round 4-0. Their last TOTAL MOTION Midland League Premier Division fixture (Wednesday 12 th September) saw them lose 1-0 at Coventry United and last Saturday they progressed in the FA Vase by winning 1-0 at Wolverhampton Casuals so our visitors must be treated with the upmost respect and we must be at the top of our game if we are to progress to the next round. Sadly, Monday evening saw our Under 18 Scholars bow out of this season’s FA Youth Cup at the Preliminary Round stage, beaten by a very good Peterborough Sports side, who had swept aside Biggleswade Town in the prior round 6-1, eventually succumbing in the second half having gone in all square at the break, with the final score showing a 4-1 win to our visitors. Hopefully, all being well, today should see the official naming of the Goldstraw Stand, with the livery being installed during the week. Once again, we would like to thank Paul Goldstraw for his generosity and support and I’m sure you will agree, the Main Stand now looks superb. Right then back to today’s game and please do get behind the boys from the very first whistle, you, our 12th Man can play a massive part in proceedings so make plenty of noise. PUMP UP THE VOLUME

The magic of the FA Cup is back and after a positive few weeks, that was always coming, we entertain our visitors with the knowledge that a win today will put us further than we have been for 40 years. I’d like to thank departing Matty Haniver for all his hard work here at the club and to Introduce Jack Cassidy as assistant manager and Ben Yeomans steps up to first team coach. OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

ROMULUS FC Joined League: 1979 Chairman: Richard Evans Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/romulus A special welcome to all for our FA Cup second Qualifying Round fixture. Our visitors are Romulus from the Castle Vale area of Birmingham, and this is to be the first meeting of our two clubs. Romulus are members of the Total Motion Midland Premier Division where they have started their campaign with the objective of a return to Step Four at the end of the season, with three wins and three draws from their seven league starts. Their goals tally is twelve scored and twelve conceded but in their FA Cup campaign it is a very different story. In the Extra Preliminary Round, they defeated Westfields 6-1 and followed that up with a 4-0 victory over Newcastle Town. In the last round it was another 4-0 victory with Belper Town their victims. So that is fourteen goals scored and just one conceded but all of the matches have been at home so now it is new ground as they visit the Premier Plus Stadium this afternoon. They have followed up their FA Cup heroics with a 1-0 away victory in the FA Vase last weekend so cup football is very much on their programme at present. Our record in recent seasons in the FA Cup is not impressive. Only once is the past four seasons have we gone beyond the

first qualifying round and we have not reached the third qualifying round since 1978/79 – before the club folded whilst playing at Shortsands! This afternoon’s victors will pocket a sponsorship cheque for £9,000 and that would be our best earnings since 1966. So get behind the lads to help them to rewrite another chapter in our FA Cup history.

Leicester City), Stuart Bowen (West Bromwich Albion), Luke Rogers (Shrewsbury Town) Darius Vassell (Aston Villa, Manchester City, Leicester City & England) and Zat Knight (Fulham, Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers & England), Marvin Johnson (Motherwell, Oxford United), Nathan Blissett (Bristol Rovers) are all Romulus old boys.

The story of Romulus Football Club began in 1979, when three dads, including the now President Roger Evans, decided to form a club, one based on the ethos that the best young players from the North Birmingham area were always able to play for their side, irrelevant of their ability to pay weekly subs.

Indeed, this is a trend that continues to this day, especially since the club launched their now acclaimed Academy in 2014, with Football League scout’s regular fixtures at Roms’ Academy games.

The club started with two age groups, and success came instantly - during their earlier years Romulus won the Lichfield League and Birmingham Boys League on regular occasions as well as the Staffordshire FA Youth Cup, a competition where the Romulus overcame teams from higher age categories throughout.

Back to the early beginnings, and while the youth sides continued to flourish, Romulus then decided to enter adult football, entering a team in the Sutton and District Sunday League. Initially placed in Division Two, they won three successive championships, including the Premier Division crown, heralding a move to the stronger Birmingham Sunday Festival League, where the club won four successive promotions.

As well as winning trophies the Roms developed a reputation for producing top class youth team players - Dean Sturridge (Derby County,

At 28, the current chairman and join first-team manager Richard Evans - Roger’s son - took the Player/Manager’s role, having played in every

season since Romulus began 16 years earlier. Indeed, Evans combined his Roms duties with his successful Saturday career in the Southern League with Moor Green (now Solihull Moors), Kidderminster and Stourbridge. For the next two years Romulus continued to succeed at the top of local Sunday football before the decision was taken to progress into the Saturday game, and they joined the Midland Combination Division One. Again, success was imminent with promotion to the Midland Combination Premier Division sealed at the first attempt. In 2003-4 the Roms win the League title on the final day of the season, and then completed a unique treble, by winning the Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup, and the Midland Combination Endsleigh Challenge Cup. The following season, Romulus made their bow in the Midland Football Alliance, and a creditable 12th place was achieved with more cup success - arch rivals Leamington were beaten 1-0 in the Terry Allden Memorial Cup final. Another year on, and the champagne corks were popping again as promotion to the Southern Football League was sealed after gaining the runnersup slot behind runaway champions Leamington, with Romulus firing in 102 league goals along the way. This coincided with an impressive FA Cup run to the Second Qualifying Round, where

they came within seconds of beating Worcester City of the Conference North. Alas, Worcester equalised, and then won the replay. They reached the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round again in 2008-9, and the following year beat then League Two side Burton Albion 2-1 in the Birmingham Senior quarter finals - a notable achievement bearing in mind Burton had six first team regulars in their side that night, including a Jamaican international with 21 caps, and their first team top scorer. The summer of 2010 saw Romulus transferred to the Evostik Northern Premier League. The Roms have now become an established fixture in this league, hovering around the play-off places for the past eight years, without yet managing to make it to the line. Last season, 2016-17, they were well placed until injuries and suspension saw them lose seven games on the spin in February/March, and they subsequently faded from the picture. As ever with the Roms, they saw sunshine through the clouds – instead of running off and signing players to fill the gaps, they saw it as an opportunity to blend in the cream of their Academy teams, and were delighted that so many of them made an encouraging impact: the games they lost were close, and it means that Evans and joint first team manager Andy Turner have what they describe as ‘a great pool of talent’ to pick and choose from going forward

into this season. Turner, the ex-Tottenham winger, joined the Roms in 2015, and has made a big impact with the Academy. Last year the Roms youngsters their National League Under 19 Alliance divisional championship – pipping rivals that included Football League clubs Mansfield Town and Crewe Alexander, completing an amazing campaign that saw them win 10 of their 16 games, draw five and lose just one. The Roms youngsters also reached the second round of the FA Youth Cup, losing to Oldham Athletic. In 2017/2018 after 11 years as a step 4 club Roms were relegated from the Evostik NPL division one north but under the new managerial partnership of Richard Evans and Dale Belford we will be looking to bounce back at the first attempt. The club has had a busy summer leaving their groundshare with Sutton Coldfield Town and moving to a superb facility at Castle Vale Stadium where we can establish our own identity and build the club properly.

23 years on from the landmark introduction of the Bosman rule, last week saw another instance of player power carving into football’s status quo with Denmark players holding a strike over their commercial rights. The holdout by the likes of Christian Eriksen, Kasper Schmeichel and Lasse Schone was the result of an in-house conflict between players and the Danish FA over their own individual sponsor deals and the national team sponsor, Hummel. The dispute saw the Danish FA resort to calling up players from the third tier of its football pyramid as well as futsal players for the international friendly against a full-strength Slovakia side. All the talk was whether the Denmark FA (DBU) could save face and reach a middle ground before the match in Trnava as well as a competitive match which followed against Wales. For the first match, they couldn’t. Ticket prices for the Slovakia game were slashed to €1 and, with little to be expected from their team, Denmark’s makeshift side was defeated 3-0. Which isn’t exactly a drubbing by any means for a team hastily assembled like a Frankenstein. Humiliation for the DBU was averted in time for the UEFA Nations League clash with Wales on Sunday. Out of a situation spawned from the politics of sports business, let’s not forget that the players from the third tier have a national team cap. When speaking to players from our own lower leagues who have won England C honours, they describe it as a ‘very proud moment’ to represent your country and a ‘privilege’. Here are three other times football has been downright barmy. Robert Hoyzer and Germany’s referee fixing scandal – 2005 German official Robert Hoyzer came under the microscope from the powers at the DFB after a cup match involving Hamburg and Paderborn when he awarded two penalties and also sent off a Hamburg player. Having initially pleaded his innocence, Hoyzer then confessed to being complicit in a £1.1m scandal which went beyond the German Cup and also affected the Bundesliga 2 and third division Regionalliga leagues. An organised crime faction from Croatia as behind the rigging of the betting market which threatened the integrity of the FIFA World Cup Germany was set to host less than 12 months on from the court proceedings against Hoyzer and other officials and players implicated in the scandal. Hoyzer was banned from football for life and sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison, while five others were also handed custodial sentences. Roy Keane slurs manager Mick McCarthy ahead of Ireland’s World Cup in Japan – 2002 A difference in opinion which derailed Ireland’s World Cup preparations for the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Midfielder Keane saw no reason to bite his tongue over the way manager Mick McCarthy had led to team to only the third World Cup in the country’s history. In a row at a pre-tournament training camp, Keane ranted at McCarthy in front of his team-mates calling the manager “a liar” and a “f****** w*****”. Goalkeeper Shay Given described the exchange as a “a total destruction of Mick, personally and professionally”. Keane was sent home from the camp in disgrace and wouldn’t feature at the World Cup. Draws against Cameroon and Germany and a 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia led to the Irish progressing to the Round of 16, where they met Spain and lost on penalties 3-2. McCarthy was sacked after the tournament and Ireland have failed to reach a World Cup since. 10 players sent off after mass brawl – Vitoria v Bahia, 2018 There’s something about South American football and short-fused tempers. No surprises then when a yellow card was brandished within the first minute of play between Brazil top-flight rivals Victoria and Bahia. Despite a flurry of yellow cards nothing appeared out of the ordinary during a first-half display which saw Vitoria hold the lead 1-0 at the interval. This was the first time in three seasons sets of supporters from both teams were allowed to attend the match. But it was on the pitch not in the stands that the match would descend into chaos. Four minutes into the second half a converted penalty by Bahia’s Vinicius led to a ‘crude’ celebration in front of the opponent’s supporters, something Vitoria goalkeeper Fernando Miguel didn’t take too kindly to. And after confronting Vinicius he was backed up in violent ways by his team-mates who unloaded punches on their opponents. The furore was brought under control after 16 minutes when the referee dismissed a total of eight players; five from Bahia and three from Vitoria. th Incredibly, the match went on but it would not last the full 90 minutes as on the verge of the 80 minute as two more players were shown red cards, reducing Vitoria to six players and leading to the match being abandoned.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP

St Neots Town 2 Bedford Town 2 (St Neots won 4-1 on penalties) After an indifferent first half performance when they were outplayed by their Step Four neighbors Bedford Town, St Neots recovered strongly after the break, to twice come back from behind before confidently winning a penalty shoot-out to progress to the second round of the league cup. St Neots’ record in penalty shoot-outs in League and National Cup competition is very poor with four consecutive defeats prior to this match but that record was firmly laid to rest as four players produced unstoppable penalty kicks to supplement an outstanding save by Finley Iron to send Bedford on their way to defeat. The result also ended a run of three defeats in the competition at the hands of lower graded clubs, but on this occasion Manager Matt Clements, looking for some consistency from his side, opted to name his strongest available line up and was rewarded with the victory. The only change in the starting line-up saw the inclusion of Ben Worman – on loan from Cambridge United – in place of Gary Wharton who was on the substitutes bench. There was a very scrappy start to the match with Bedford looking the more composed side. Ashton Grant powered down the left riding two defensive tackles to cross for Dan Walker who headed wide despite being under no pressure. Then after nine minutes out of nowhere Bedford went ahead as Connor Furlong picked up a casual clearance 25 yards from goal and hit an angled low shot under the despairing dive of Finley Iron. St Neots tried to get back into the match and Claudio Ofosu found pace to go beyond visiting goalkeeper Niall Cooper, but defender Dean Dummett got back to smother his shot.

From a Ben Ford corner Ollie Swain was left unmarked but he header tamely over the bar and then Iron was forced into a good save from former Saint Ben Ford. St Neots lack of accuracy in passing and their failure to produce ball retention was handing the initiative to their opponents, but towards half time the balance seemed to be tipping in St Neots’ favor as Worman had a narrow angled shot saved at the near post after 33 minutes, and following a Luke Knight free kick eight minutes later, James Peters volleyed in to side netting from a tight angle. The match followed a much different pattern after the break with St Neots firmly in the ascendancy. Two minutes after the restart a Johnny Herd free kick was mishandled by Cooper who had Dummett to thank as he cleared off the line. Peters was injured and replaced by Kasey Douglas, but this did not hamper St Neots as Harry O’Malley fired over the bar and Cooper had to save bravely at the feet of Taylor Parr. After 63 minutes Dion Sembie-Ferris saw his shot rebound from the foot of a post but the pressure on the Bedford goal was building and two minutes later Parr hooked a Matt Miles free kick back into the penalty area and Harry O’Malley scored his first goal for St Neots. Ofosu then curled a shot inches wide of the far post but St Neots were pegged back again after 72 minutes when a ball over the top of the defense sent Dan Walker clear. He looked a good five yards offside but was allowed to continue to shoot past Iron to put his side back in front. Three minutes later parity was restored as a Sembie-Ferris shot rebounded from the bar and attempting to clear Cade Stephen-Abbey turned the ball

into his own net for a second St Neots equalizer. Subsequently in the last 15 minutes St Neots were on top, but Warman hit the keeper’s legs with one effort and headed a second over the bar, so the match went to a penalty shoot-out. Taylor Parr, Dion Sembie-Ferris and Johnny Herd all put their kicks away whilst Iron produced a full length save to deny Jermaine Hall and when Taylor Rhiney fired high over the bar St Neots skipper Luke Knight made it four successful kicks in a row to win the tie. FA CUP FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND

St Neots Town 2 Bishops Stortford 1 A ten-man St Neots side put up a tremendous performance against the odds to defeat Bishops Stortford and move into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for only the second time in five seasons. With the £6,000 Emirates sponsorship in the bank they now await the draw for the next round. The outcome of the match probably depended most on a shockingly harsh decision by Braintree referee Anthony Pope to issue St Neots skipper Luke Knight for a red card for what at worst was a clumsy challenge as he brought down Jordan Westcott after half an hour. What seemed to contribute to the decision more than the tackle was the outrageous behavior of most of the visiting side who surrounded the official demanding Knight’s dismissal. Had that decision been the standard for the match there would have been several more players sent for an early bath. However, to St Neots lasting credit they rolled up their sleeves and worked non-stop to eliminate their numerical disadvantage and it must be said for more than an hour there was no sign that the visitors had the extra man. There were enforced changes in the St Neots line-up with loan players Finley Iron (goalkeeper) and Ben Worman unable to play under their loan agreement and James Peters sitting out injured. Into the side came goalkeeper Harry Reynolds for his debut along with Gary Wharton and Dylan Williams after injury. St Neots looked the better in the opening stages displaying an obvious fitness advantage over their visitors and they were unlucky not to go ahead after just four minutes when Taylor Parr headed on a Johnny Herd lengthy throw and Harry O’Malley crashed a shot on the inside of a goalpost to be scrambled clear. Dion SembieFerris looked very lively in attack and he went clear of the

defense but shot wide and then he moved smartly inside his marker to see a net-bound shot blocked by a defender. For the visitors, Jake Cass saw an acrobatic overhead effort sail harmlessly over the bar and then from an Alfie Mason corner giant defender Lance Atkins rose above the defense but headed over the bar. The sending off seemed to slow things down as St Neots regrouped but with seven minutes to go before the break Claudio Ofosu wriggled inside two defenders to be brought down by Johnville Renee resulting in a penalty kick which Dylan Williams tucked confidently ahead to put St Neots in front.

scores after 77 minutes. St Neots sent on Kasey Douglas and within fifty seconds of his appearance he was perfectly placed to side foot home a Sembie-Ferris cross after a great through pass from Matt Miles. Now again in front St Neots looked fairly secure although the Referee added on five extra minutes to be endured. Visiting Assistant Manager James Robinson was red-carded after the match after an exchange of views with the Referee.

For a short spell the visitors seemed to be in the ascendancy after the break. Following an Elliot Ronto corner the ball was forced into the net, but the Referee spotted a foul on Harry Reynolds and then Cass tested the keeper with a crisp from fifteen yards, but he saved well. He then had to leave his line smartly to parry an Atkins narrow-angled volley, but St Neots replied with a Herd cross that found Sembie-Ferris at the far post but visiting keeper Calum Kitscha saved well. It was now and end-to-end contest with chances created and in the same attack a Parr volley following a corner was deflected wide of goal, and then a Herd shot suffered the same fate. Both sides sent on substitutes to freshen up their attack and it began to look that St Neots could hold to their slim advantage and even build on it as a Tom Wood volley sailed just wide and Sembie-Ferris was brought down on the edge of the area when clear surprisingly resulting only in a caution for Atkins. Neither side could be faulted for effort as yellow cards were liberally shown but it was Stortford who made the break through as Jake Cass produced a well-placed shot to level the

SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Banbury United 1 St Neots Town 3 St Neots recorded their first away league victory of the season against both the odds and expectations returning from Banbury with three points. It was only their second victory in six visits to Banbury and the home side were on a seven-match unbeaten run stretching back more than a month. In addition, St Neots were forced into five team changes from their previous outing with skipper Luke Knight suspended, Harr O’Malley ill, Gary Wharton injured and Taylor Parr unavailable plus Manager Matt Clements reinstated Finley Iron in goal after he was cup tied for the Stortford match. Into the side came man of the match Nabil Shariff after his brief spell at Stratford, James Peters after injury, Ben Worman (also cup-tied by his parent club) and Dan Olaniran after five matches on the substitutes bench. A goal down after 17 minutes the reshaped visiting side had to dig deep to compete in the opening half hour but Shariff’s double strike before the break breathed confidence into the side. He was not the only player to impress with Iron making several significant saves, Worman impressive in midfield and acting skipper Johnny Herd outstanding in both defense and attack. Banbury looked the better side in the opening twenty minutes with their two speedy wide players putting the St Neots defense under significant pressure. From a first minute Ravi Shamsi corner Iron had to produce a smart save to deny Lee Henderson and them both Shamsi and Rasulo fired over the bar when well placed. Greg Kaziboni shredded the St Neots defense to set up Rasulo who shot narrowly wide, and St

Neots only real opening during this spell when Claudio Ofosu sped past two players to set up Dion Sembie-Ferris whose off-balance volley passed over the bar. The home pressure paid off after 17 minutes when a long clearance from goalkeeper James Goff was touched on by Jack Self and Tom Wood seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball and Ravi Shamsi ran through to beat the retreating Iron. Ofosu was proving a threat to the home defense and he cut in to fire over the bar before testing Goff with a rising effort. He then provided the important equalizing goal as he picked out Sembie-Ferris with a delightful crossfield pass and he cleverly set up Nabil Shariff for a close-range finish after half an hour. Seven minutes later Ben Worman‘s chip over the defense saw Nabil Shariff dart between two defenders and beat the approaching keeper with a low finish. Iron made the save of the first half to deny Kaziboni and a minute before the break St Neots could have gone further ahead but the unmarked Wood headed over from a Williams corner.

attacking approach but their only success was a Shamsi free kick well handled by Iron. With ten minutes left St Neots sent on Jack Keeble for the tiring Ofosu and shortly afterwards a long clearance found Shariff wide right and he advanced to test Goff who prevented his hat trick with a fine save. A late punch clear by Iron from another Shamsi effort was the home sides’ last chance and St Neots ran out comfortable and deserved winners.

St Neots carried on after half time where they had left off and after 59 minutes a searching run and cross by Shariff was only cleared as far as Dylan Williams who produced a delightful well-placed shot into the corner of the net. That provoked a determined Banbury response and Iron had to go full length to push away a shot by Ricky Johnson. Injuries to Williams and Sembie-Ferris meant two St Neots substitutions midway through the second half but the rearranged St Neots attack still looked threatening on the break. Banbury too, threw on substitutes and adopted a more
