Good Evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of Coming Soon the Saints and the Goldstraw Goldsmiths Academy, for today’s Pitching In Southern League Division One Central match. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters Barton Rovers and we hope you enjoy your visit before making a safe trip home later on this evening. After the twelve day lay off due to our early FA Cup exit at Bedford, the lads had trained hard and recuperated from any knocks suffered at Kempston and headed to Welwyn Garden City on Saturday, scene of a seven – one mauling the last time we visited their place but there was to be no repeat with our young warriors returning home with the three points after a commanding four – one win. Another two goals for Joe Rider and singles for Mylo and Neo. There could and should have been an even bigger margin in the scoreline but hey, lets not get greedy lol. A superb debut for Mamadou Jobe who has joined us on loan from CUFC and great to see both Dequane involved from the bench and recent signing Jake Battersby travelling and getting his fitness back. Once again, terrific support from the travelling Saints fans, something that is greatly appreciated by the squad and management. Saturday saw us travel to league leaders North Leigh, the result not known at the time of writing these notes. This game should have seen the return of Joe Sutton to the squad after serving his three game ban. Back to tonight’s game, get behind the lads in the manner I know you will please, we have simply some superb supporters who cheer on their team in the right way, making us all very proud.
Come on You Saints
Firstly, I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone from Barton Rovers. I hope you enjoy your visit to St. Neots and wish you well for the season ahead. I’ll start by reflecting on the bank holiday weekend fixtures. We targeted 6 points after what was a bruising opening week or so for us. I was really pleased with but mainly for the players. To win both games and return 6 points on the board is always pleasing. Starting with the Kidlington game, I think we dominated in the early stages and deservedly scored early. A couple of moments of magic from Myles set us on the way. Kidlington did however have a large spell of pressure in the first half. The most pleasing moment for me came during this spell. I saw the players throw themselves in front of the ball and as silly as it sounds, I saw a real desire to not see the ball end up in the back of the net. The second half was maybe less impressive but it’s always hard to re-motivate yourself sitting at half time in such a comfortable position. Moving onto the Kempston game, we carried some knocks and niggles with the quick turnaround. I still can’t believe we didn’t manage to score in the first half! Apart from 2 counter attacking moments we carried a constant threat and created 10 chances on goal in the first 45. We said to the boys at half time to be patient and keep playing the same way and the results will come. I must admit, I did fear the missed chances may cost us! However, once we scored one, I did feel there would only be one winner. Yet again, Kempston did have chances, but we put our bodies on the line to protect our goal and come away with the clean sheet and importantly three points. After a 12-day break, we then travelled to Welwyn Garden City where the lads produced without doubt our best 45 minuets of the season during the opening period. Despite losing our way a little in the second half we walked away with a positive 4-1 win after some clinical finishing. Just prior to the bank holiday weekend we lost the services of Arel Amu who has signed for Kings Langley. We wish Arel the very best for the season, he’s a player who always conducted himself with the highest level of professionalism and always performed well in a Saints shirt. At the time of writing, we also expect to lose young Florian to Yaxley, we again wish him the best of luck for the season ahead. On a positive note, regarding player news, we are delighted to secure the loan services of Mamadu Jobe. We also are delighted to welcome back a familiar face in Jake Battersby. Jake comes to us nursing an injury so we may have to wait a while to see his “second debut” in a Saints shirt. We know Barton will be a tough challenge and we will have to be at our very best tonight to get a positive result. We have a tough run of games, so we’ll have to perform at our maximum to gain anything from the game tonight. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who turned out to support the boys recently. The boys and all the staff really appreciate your support. It’s always great to see so many Saints fans at the away fixtures and hopefully we are building a team that you enjoy watching. Enjoy the game. As always, please get behind the boys tonight. Up the Saints!

A warm welcome to our supporters and the visiting officials and players of Barton Rovers Football Club for tonight’s game at The Premier Plus Stadium. Pete and the team have really started to find their feet with his talented squad and have found real form and goals in recent games. The Saints are steadily moving upwards and find themselves just outside the playoff positions. We all are excited to what we can achieve this season under Pete & Sean’s positive leadership and look forward to seeing this squad of players evolve and develop and the brand of football you all are enjoying so far. Our U18s, under the Tuition and leadership of Alex Minall, Academy Head of Coaching and our Director of Football Iain Parr who have been an integral part of the success of our emerging young players over past years continue to bring new talent forward and success to the club and have recently progressed in the FA youth cup 4-1 and are looking forward to an exciting season ahead, great work lads. The Club is slowly but surely opening up again for Entertainment and hospitality events and have hosted a great charity fundraising evening recently with Black Cat Radio, our partners in music events and we offer some excellent new multi functional rooms and facilities for our sponsors and potential business partners and the local community to enjoy . We are also working on a new scheme for our club members to join and support and help community projects in the future, which Hopefully will be available to you soon. Finally, it’s your support that is so important in helping our teams reach their potential Goals. Wishing you all the best for the up and coming games.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL St Neots Town

Kidlington
0
A first league win of the season and a clean sheet got St Neots’ Bank Holiday programme off to the perfect start. After a stuttering start to their league programme, they needed a positive performance and result, and they got both against visiting Kidlington who arrived occupying the bottom place in the embryonic league table. After two heavy defeats Kidlington arrived on a back of a surprise away FA Cup victory at North Leigh but they never really competed in this match and the final tally against them could have been higher. Even an extended half time break due to an injury to one of the officials failed to dampen St Neots hold on the match and they deserved their success with man of the match Myles Cowling turning in a sparkling individual performance. Manager Pete Gill made two team changes reinstating Callum Anderson in midfield and Joe Rider up front, leaving Erin Amu and Lawrence Hammond on the substitutes bench. It was Kidlington’s first appearance at the Premier Plus Stadium with the previous two seasons’ scheduled visits ruled out by COVID-19. St Neots made much the better start creating two good chances before taking the lead on 13 minutes. Charley Barker stung Harry Way’s hands with a 30 yarder after four minutes and three minutes later the visiting keeper was again in action parrying a Myles Cowling effort after unselfish play by Joe Rider. The opening goal came courtesy of a Joe Rider penalty kick after visiting skipper Lewis Gabbidon had scythed down Cowling as he wove his way through the defence. Briefly the visitors rallied, and John Mills sent a free kick from a promising position high over the crossbar, and a Gabbidon free kick was pushed away by Louis Chadwick. St Neots continued to dominate from midfield and ten minutes before the break the mercurial Myles Cowling did negotiate his way through the visiting defence to score his first goal of the season. Rider then got the ball in the net only to by pulled back by an offside flag and as half time approached Cowling had two further chances to increase the home lead. He first went around the last defender and goalkeeper only to be denied by too narrow an angle as he found the side netting, and then after a flowing team move Lee Watkins set him up at the far post but his finish was too high. However, St Neots were not to be denied and in the final seconds of the first period Barker crossed to the far post for Joe Rider to claim his second goal of the match.
An appeal for a replacement for an injured Assistant Referee was answered from the crowd and the second half got under way after an extended half time break. Lee Watkins picked up a yellow card for a late challenge and then Kidlington went for broke as they sent on all three permitted substitutes in a bid to revitalise their approach. Despite reshaping their line-up, they were caught short in defence after 64 minutes as Neo Richard-Noel again fed by Cowling, picked his spot with a searing finish to make the score 4-0. That was the signal for St Neots to give substitutes some game time with Florian Tsaguim, Erin Amu and Lawrence Hammond all introduced for Richard-Noel, Cowling and Watkins. For a spell they seemed to coast on their comfortable lead and Kidlington looked more confident as substitute Jordan Godfrey brought a fine full length save from Chadwick after 71 minutes. With 13 minutes left visiting skipper Gabbidon was sent off after a rash two footed tackle and that signalled the end of the visitors’ attacking efforts. St Neots comfortably finished the match creating three more good scoring opportunities with Rider shooting narrowly wide, substitute Florian Tsaguim getting the ball in the net but being ruled offside, and Ben Heal bringing the save of the match from Way as he twisted in the air to turn the ball over the crossbar. It was an overall satisfactory performance and will have boosted the confidence of Pete Gill’s side. SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Kempston Rovers

St Neots Town

St Neots rounded off a very successful Bank Holiday 72 hours’ period completing their first away win of the season finishing with seven goals and six valuable league points. Star of the show was striker Joe Rider who recorded his first hat trick in a St Neots shirt since 20th January 2019 when he scored three goals in a 4-1 Hunts Youth Cup victory at Yaxley. It was the first away hat trick by a St Neots player since Tom Meechan performed that feat at Bideford on 8th August 2015. For the trip to Kempston, manager Pete Gill named an unchanged starting line-up for the first time this season and his only concern will have been injuries picked up by Charley Barker, Ben Heal and Neo RichardNoel all of whom had to be substituted as a result. However, with no match this coming weekend, the injured players now have twelve days to recover prior to the trip to Welwyn Garden City on 11th September. Now up to seventh in the table with a healthy goal difference in their favour St Neots will go into their next six scheduled matches – four of which are away from home with their confidence high. It was a rather strange first half, St Neots having much the larger share of play but mainly on the break, Kempston created two or three decent openings that could have seen St Neots having to come back from behind. However, as the half wore on the visitors created their own chances and only some inspired goalkeeping by home custodian Carl Knox ensured parity for his side at half time. St Neots early pressure promised much but delivered little before Miguel De Matos breaking down the flank set up Emmanual Dahio but he put his header well wide before the unmarked Daniel Naylor headed tamely over the bar. An early injury to Charley Barker saw Erin Amu on as substitute and he sent Myles Cowling on a forward run which ended with Knox going full length to push the ball for a corner. After 27 minutes the keeper distinguished himself with a fine save from Joe Rider and ten minutes later, he produced an even more impressive save to deny the same St Neots player. On the stroke of half time a four man move from the back ended with a free kick from which Rider nodded wide.
Immediately after the break Neo Richard-Noel was sent tumbling in the box but the Referee waved away the visitors’ penalty appeals. As St Neots increased their hold on the match, Kempston had two defenders cautioned and after 57 minutes Rider then got the ball in the net but was ruled offside. However, he was not to be denied for less than a minute later in St Neots’ next attack Richard-Noel picked up a long clearance from Louis Chadwick on the left wing to set up Joe Rider for his first goal – his third in as many appearances. Kempston broke away with Charlie Hayford feeding former Saints striker Chris Manangu but he was driven wide and the chance lost. Cowling was again the live wire for the visitors, and he brought another excellent save from Knox at the expense of a corner. As the second half wore on Kempton visibly flagged and the last ten minutes was one-way traffic towards the home goal. After 81 minutes Wynford Marfo powered forward to feed Rider and he produced an electric burst of speed to round the final defender and shoot powerfully across the home keeper into the far corner of the net to make it 2-0. The icing on the cake came four minutes into added time when visiting skipper Lee Watkins powered his way into the penalty area to be upended by William Peck and when the Referee pointed to the spot there was only one St Neots player going to take the kick. Joe Rider calmly placed his kick into the corner of the net to take his personal tally to five goals this season and earn his right to the match ball as a souvenir. St Neots: Chadwick, Heal, Smith, Anderson, Johnson, Marfo, Cowling, Barker, RichardNoel, Rider, Watkins Subs: Amu (E) (for Barker 19 mins), Steel (for Heal 69 mins), Tsaguim (for Richard-Noel 88 mins), Hammond and Peacock Cards: Watkins (Y – 90+3 mins), Goals: Joe Rider (3) (58 mins, 81 mins and 90+4 mins) Kempston: Knox, Dada, De Matos, Irish, Pock, Amghar, Steele, Naylor, Manangu, Hayford, Dahie Subs: Davis (for Dada 46 mins), Slama (for Manangu 78 mins), Quigley (for Naylor 83 mins), Aquimede and Laws. St Neots recorded their first ever league victory over their Hertfordshire hosts by four goals to one with a commanding performance to lift them to the fringe of the play off places. The last time the two sides had met, St Neots squandered a two goals lead to collapse to an odd goal in five defeat, but this time there was never any fear of a repeat as St Neots dominated almost throughout. Aaron Smith missed the game through injury and Charley Barker was not fully fit and started on the bench, so Erin Amu made his second start of the campaign, whilst the latest teenage Cambridge United loanee Mamadou Jobe made his debut in defence. There was also a welcome first appearance of the season for Dequaine Wilson-Braithwaite who came on as a late substitute. Joe Rider’s double took his personal goals tally this season to seven in four starts whilst Myles Cowling was also on the scoresheet again. St Neots assumed control from the start. In their first attack Erin Amu shot just wide and after 12 minutes they deservedly took the lead as Joe Rider pulled the ball back from the bye line for Myles Cowling to rap home. Cowling was terrorising the home defence and he was scythed down by David Keenleyside to earn the home skipper a deserved booking. Wynford Marfo then beat three players in a mazy run forward after 25 minutes, but his finish was too high and in the next move a home defender cleared off the line from an Amu finish to a Callum Anderson corner. Little was seen of the home attack with Louis Chadwick not tested at all in the first half and St Neots might have made more of their superior possession, but home keeper Charlie Crowley produced a couple of good saves. Then after 35 minutes a bizarre incident saw St Neots given a controversial dropped ball advantage on the edge of the Welwyn penalty area after a midfield head injury has stopped play, and St Neots took full advantage as Joe Rider knocked in a Cowling cross to extend the lead. Welwyn almost produced an instant reply, three minutes later when Benjamin Spaul played Jordan Watson clear of the visiting defence but covering defender Ben Heal got back to block his finish at the expense of a corner. St Neots knew a positive start to the second half would further increase their domination and after Cowling had fired narrowly wide from distance a third St Neots goal really confirmed them in control. It came after 56 minutes when a home defender dithered as the home side tried to play their way out of defence, and Nehemiah Richard-Noel stole the ball to beat Crowley with a firm curling shot. Six minutes later the game was over as a serious contest when Joe Rider went clear of a square lying defence and finished with a flourish to make the score 4-0.
At that point St Neots looked to become a little careless as Welwyn were clearly stung by their seemingly hopeless position and in the last 15 minutes Welwyn enjoyed their best period of the match. After Crowley had made a good save from Amu, Welwyn earned some consolation for their determined efforts when Jordan Kinoshi pounced on a poor defensive clearance to claim their consolation goal when his shot took a wicked deflection and left Chadwick flat-footed, but the match was far from over as Cowling sent a free kick over the bar and Rider was denied a hat trick after he sidestepped two defenders, but Crowley saved well. Five minutes from time debutant Jobe marked his first display with a fine goal line clearance after a sloppy defensive clearance. Now St Neots have two rearranged games, away league match at League leaders North Leigh next week and a home game versus Ware FC on Tuesday 21st September, prior to their return to Bedford Town in the FA Trophy on 25th September.

FA YOUTH CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND ST NEOTS TOWN U18
4
HARPENDEN TOWN U18 1
St Neots recent record in the FA Youth Cup is no better than patchy. In the past five seasons they have won just one game, going out in their first match on the other four occasions. The one exception to this record was a home Preliminary Round victory two years ago over Barton Rovers U18. However, they more than made up for this with a comprehensive Preliminary Round victory this time around, over visiting Harpenden U18. It was a result fashioned around a stunning first half display where they carved out their passage to the next round with three well taken goals. In only their second competitive match of the season they looked confident and sharp from the off although visitors Harpenden looked well-balanced opponents. In the first attack Marley UgarteEdwards was played clear of the defence but his effort was too high whilst at the other end Charlie Culank shot wide in the visitors’ first real attack. Then after 14 minutes St Neots took the lead. An attack down the left saw Julinho Gomes go past two defenders and when his effort was blocked the ball fell to Kasper Kobus on the edge of the area and he rapped home. St Neots continued to press, and Ugarte-Edwards set up strike partner Alfie Carberry but visiting keeper George Nicol spread himself to block the shot with his legs. St Neots though, were not to be denied and another decisive attack ended with the speedy Gomes setting up Marley UgarteEdwards for a decisive finish. As half time approached the visitors were pinned back in their own half and three minutes before the break Newman Nshangalume added the third goal to give the home side a very commanding half time lead. The second half saw St Neots adopt a less attacking approach and although they still had a much greater possession of play, they found the visiting defence tighter and more determined. Nicol distinguished himself with a 59th minute full length save to push away a low drive from St Neots skipper Ryan Thomas, and St Neots introduced substitute Jaiden Bell in a bid to break down the visiting defence. Carberry tested the keeper but was then substituted and Nshangalume shot wide after a good move split the Harpenden defence. The most notable second half action came in the final five minutes. The lively Julinho Gomes was upended by David Omoregbees to earn a penalty kick which he converted himself before the visitors earned themselves a late consolation goal, also from the penalty spot, scored by Reece Lambert. St Neots: Anthony, Hargreaves, Thomas, Nshangalume, Perry, Cranfield, Kobus, Clark, Carbery, Ugarte-Edwards, Gomes

BARTON ROVERS Year founded: 1898 Chairman: Darren Whiley Club Website: www.bartonrovers.com BARTON ROVERS WERE THE LAST TEAM WE PLAYED (AWAY) IN THE LEAGUE BEFORE THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN LESS THAN A YEAR AGO A special welcome this evening to our visitors Barton Rovers for the third league meeting of our two clubs here in St Neots. It certainly seems more than a year ago because of the lengthy COVID pause but it is in fact just ten months ago since we visited Sharpenhoe Road and came away with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Ben Warman and Ryan Robbins. Our two previous meeting here were on 2nd January 2012 prior to our promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern League, and on 5th October 2019 – our first season back in Division One. The results of those two meetings were in stark contrast – our lads winning the first 5-3 with two goals each from Stefan Moore and Ben Mackey and a fifth from Dan Jacob, but Barton got their revenge two seasons ago with a 2-0 victory. Away from home we won 1-0 (goal scorer Luke Webb) to complete a double, but Barton also did the double over us two years ago winning 3-0 on home soil. Barton have been members of the Step Four Southern League since 2010/11 but previously had been a real force in the South Midlands League where they won eight league honours in the 1970’s. Also during that spell they were FA Vase runners-up at Wembley in 1977/78 and in 1980/81 enjoyed their best ever FA Cup run when they reached the First Round Proper.
Continuing the Cup theme our two clubs have met three times in cup competition – in the East Anglian Cup in 1998/99 and twice in the Hinchingbrooke Cup. Our East Anglian Cup meeting was in our most successful season in that competition and it was a third round match at home where we won in a penalty shoot out to go on to be beaten in the Final. Our Hinchingbrooke Cup meetings were in 2003/04 (won 3-0 at home) and 2005/06 (lost 2-3 at home) – despite leading twice with goals from Steve Kuhne. Enjoy the match John Walker
HISTORY – BARTON ROVERS Barton Rovers have their home in Barton-le-Clay, a village of some 5000 people just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter village football for the first 50 years until 1946 when they reformed and joined the Luton & District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League. They enjoyed only limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964 65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep in their final season the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy the only time this has been achieved to date. In 1976 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time and went to the quarterfinals before losing to Farnborough Town. The following year it was one step better with a Semi final appearance against Sheffield. 1978 saw the pinnacle reached with a crowd of 16,391 watching the Final at Wembley where Barton Rovers lost 1 2 to Blue Star of Newcastle. In 1979 The Rovers gained election to the then isthmian league. In their first season they finished a credible 8th. In 1980 81 this was improved to fourth and the same position was repeated in 1981 82, when the club also enjoyed another good Vase run reaching the Rainworth MW 1 2 on aggregate. At the end of the 1982 83 season Barry Reed retired having achieved the clubs highest position of 3rd. He had also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the First Round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when the Rovers lost 0 2 to Torquay United at Plainmoor. The club had to settle for mid table obscurity as three managers guided the Rovers through a transitional period in the mid 80's. In season 1990 91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two, for Manager Mick Huckle that was his final game in charge after five years, as he retired to step up to General Manager. After an unspectacular 1991/192 season with firstly Ray Brandon and then Tony Dumigan in charge a new man was appointed in May 1992 he was Brian Williams who had been one of the most successful non league managers in the area. Unfortunately his success was limited to cup competitions with the Rovers having their best FA Vase run for seven years, eventually failing to, Wembley finalists Tiverton Town from the Great Mills Western League in The 4th Round. The semi final of the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also reached but the most notable success came in the Isthmian Associate Members Trophy where the Rovers reached the final of an Isthmian League competition for the first time in their history. Despite a 3 1 extra time defeat against Northwood it was an achievement that lit up the reins, retaining Gordon Brown as his coach. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season at Sharpenhoe Road saw him guide the Rovers to 4th spot, the club's highest position since 1983, behind runaway leaders and big spenders Newbury Town, Chertsey Town and Aldershot Town. This platform was built upon in season 1994-95, and Gordon Taylor successfully steered the Rovers into Runners up position behind Champions Thame United. But to leave it there would hide the real success story of the season. It was realised at Christmas that the Clubs financial position was precarious to say the least, and drastic action was needed, initially to cut costs. With the team riding high in the table, and the very realistic chance of promotion, if not the Championship, lying ahead the decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not an easy one, but a necessary evil to ensure the Club's survival. This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by the manager Gordon Taylor, and the bulk of the playing squad, cannot be disputed. Their response had to be seen to be believed. Playing the best football of the season they subsequently swept to nine straight victories, eight in the league that put Barton back on top of the table, scoring 30 goals and conceding just 4. Only one victory in March allowed the chasing pack to make up ground, but a return to form in April culminated in promotion being gained in the penultimate match. No praise can be too high for the achievement of the management and players, who after all the adversity, took Barton Rovers into the First Division of the Isthmian League for the first time ever, after 16 seasons of membership of the League. The elevation also saw the Rovers join the top 176-non league clubs in the country in the FA Trophy.
HISTORY – BARTON ROVERS (continued) With subsequent cuts being made to the clubs running costs, and increase in revenue from sponsorship, the club was once again heading in the right direction. Barton's first season in Division One was not an easy one as the club struggled on to finds it's feet in the higher division, but lessons were learnt from the early setbacks, and by December the tide was turned and the Rovers hoisted themselves clear of the danger zone. Barton also reached the finals of both county cups, where they met Bedford Town twice. Bedford took the honours in the Senior Cup, winning 1-0. Barton then won the Premier Cup 1-0 on aggregate. Tony McNally scoring the only goal 11 minutes from the end of the second leg at Sharpenhoe Road. Season 1996 97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. However a run of seven matches without a win saw Manager Gordon Taylor tender his resignation in October 1996 after three and a quarter years in charge, despite the club still being in a healthy position in the top half of the table. Former Manager Mick Huckle took over the reins with former Coach Ben Harrison on a temporary basis while interviews took place. As a result of these the Club selected Gordon Brown as their new Manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2.1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the "duck “broken and a settled side now back in place, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from the danger zone. On the penultimate Saturday of the season with a 3 - 1 home win over doomed Tooting & Mitcham United, and a win at Molesey on the last day to be absolutely sure. As in the previous season, Barton lifted some silverware. This time it was the in the form of the Anglia TV 5 a side Championship. Manager Gordon Brown hoped his second season would see his team improve within their new found level. This was achieved in season 1997 98 with a new record finish of 16th. The Rovers also had their best run in the FA Cup for 17 years, reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round with wins over Hassocks, Clapton and Windsor & Eton before Braintee Town ended the growing dreams of another 1st Round Proper appearance. Barton also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the 11th time, and Manager Gordon Brown departed to coach in the US for a year with the cup secured thanks to a 4 0 victory over Potton United. The Club appointed Gordon's successor in April 1998, on his own recommendation, in former Arsenal and Luton Town player lan Allinson, who was manager at United Counties League club Stotfold. Another record season was recorded, with 15th a new positional high. To cap a memorable season Barton reached three cup finals. The Bedfordshire Senior Cup was retained with a 3 - 0 win over Bedford Town, in a final played at Bedford Town FC and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup was won for the first time, with a 1 - 0 win over Hemel Hempstead Town, again on the opponents ground. Barton missed out on a cup treble, losing the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final, which they had reached in their first season, by 2 - 1 to Spalding United. 1999-2000 saw an excellent start by the club with Rovers in third spot on Christmas day. However, two defeats over the festive period by local rivals Bedford Town and bottom club Chertsey Town brought Ian Allinson’s shock resignation to join Harlow Town. Ian Donnelly was promoted from assistant to take over the reins, and the club consolidated to record it’s highest ever league finish with a final place of 12th. In addition to this Barton Rovers reached the semi-final of the League Cup losing over two legs to Farnborough Town. With the club suffering a poor start to the next season Ian Donnelly was replaced by Noel Blackwell, who had been assistant Manager at Stevenage Borough. Noel was also a former Barton Player from the 1980’s but his reign was brief lasting just 17 days in September. Bartons third manager in as many months was Alan Biley, the former Everton, Derby county and Cambridge player. Alan was appointed in October 2000 but resigned to take over Diss Town 4 months later. Dick Newman took over, steadied the ship, but had the job of rebuilding the Rovers following their relegation back to Division Two With no relegation taking place due to the forthcoming league restructuring, the club took the opportunity to bring forward some of the younger players from it’s youth academy to give them invaluable first team experience. Although the average age of the side was probably the youngest in the division, the team managed to finish in 14th place in the table.
HISTORY – BARTON ROVERS (continued) This young team also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and won the Hinchingbrooke Cup for the first time with a 2-0 victory over Yaxley. Immediately after this final match of the season, Dick Newman informed the club of his decision to resign to take up a post with Potton United. However this shock news was tempered by the fact that former manager, Ian Allinson, had left Harlow and agreed to return to Sharpenhoe Road for a second spell in charge, continuing the progress of the young players which had begun the previous season. Season 2002/03 saw another period of consolidation with several young players making the grade, Notably striker Drew Roberts, who coming through from the youth side set the league “alight” with some great goals before moving on to Bedford Town. Ian continued to mould a side on a tight budget with yet more youth players to come through, hopes were high for this season. In January Ian decided to try his luck elsewhere and so he left to join Boreham wood on good terms after 18 months with us in his second spell. The club moved fast in finding a replacement and by the following Saturday it had appointed former players Gordon Guile and Graham Golds from Harpenden Town as joint player/managers. The club started the new season in the Southern league following the restructure full of confidence as the rebuilding continued. Unfortunately in early October Gordon found that work commitments meant that he could no longer give his full commitment to the club as manager, and he stepped down. The club moved quickly again and moved coach and former manager Gordon Taylor up into the management “hot seat”. They also appointed long-term player and club captain Tony Mcnally as player coach, and they continued to keep the club together and moving in the right direction. After a season that saw the team consolidate it’s position in the league, and the departure of top goal scorer Paul Barnes to A.F.C. Wimbledon for a club record fee the season ended with a second Hinchingbrooke Cup win and the final retirement of stalwart Tony Mcnally. The club then regretfully accepted the resignation of manger Gordon Taylor. With a view to the future the club appointed youth team manager Kevin Thoburn as General manager and the vastly experienced Neil Rodney as coach and the job of rebuilding the team went on with the team looking very impressive in the pre-season period. The period after Kevin Thorburn’s departure has somewhat been a transition of turning old way’s into new. Manager Gary Fitzgerald took charge during the 2007/8 Season, Gary was the youngest manager to ever take charge of the Rovers team. The 2007/8 season was a season looked at many by trying to achieve stability after the previous regime. The season ended in the Rovers finishing in a comfortable position in the league, safe from any relegation battle. The following season Gary Fitzgerald was still at the helm, his passion and knowledge of the non-league game guided Barton to safety once again. For a team that has such a small population, playing football in the Southern League is somewhat of an achievement in itself, Gary Fitzgerald was building a young and vibrant squad by the end 2008/9 Season. Former Luton Town player Ross Hanley had a superb season, winning the player of the season award. Fitzgerald believed in youth and the performances by Hanley were second to none. The 2009/10 Season witnessed Gary Fitzgerald’s third season in charge of the club. This season was to be a struggle, however there were many highlights along the way. In the league the club battled with relegation throughout the season, and had to await news on a reprieve which gladly came in the summer of 2010. Barton Rovers played some fantastic football throughout the season and the lads battled till the end. Even in such a tough season there were some outstanding individuals, Centre-back Paul Andrews developed into a no-nonsense defender and Tommy Hull a combatitive midfielder had a fine regime. The club enjoyed a great run in The FA Trophy, beating Ryman Premier side Horsham on the way. The start of the 2010/11 season saw Barton Rovers in the Southern Football League, this time in the newly created Central Division. Gary Fitzgerald departed the club after four seasons in charge due to an unconvincing start to the season and was replaced with Dan Kennoy. Dan was recruited from neighbours Arlesey Town where he held a coaching position with their first team. At 30 years of age the former Rovers player, managed to assemble a vibrant squad that ended the season in a solid 12th position in the Southern League Central division.
HISTORY – BARTON ROVERS (continued) One of the plum results in his first season was the 2-1 away win at promoted Hitchin Town. The 2010/11 season also saw the introduction of a Reserve Team, some 15 years after Barton Rovers Reserves kicked their last ball. Darren Whiley was charged with the responsibility of filtering players through to the 1st team and competing in the Suburban Football League. A solid 13th placed finish in the first season justified the decision to reintroduce a reserve team to the senior setup. Richard Wilmot was awarded the Players Player of the Year award, Sam Spencer was awarded Player of the Year and Andre Maltay picked up the Supporters Player of the Year. The 2011/12 season saw Dan Kennoy retain a majority of the squad so the season started with an air of optimism. It's fair to say that it didn't quite go as planned. Just four points from the opening nine games and an FA Cup defeat to lowly Hatfield Town and the young manager was started to fill the pressure. Then just one defeat in the next nine league games saw the confidence rise as well as the Rovers league position. Some convincing results continued notably the 5-1 away win at Chertsey Town and a 4-0 home win against Chalfont St Peter and the play off places were starting to look achievable. The final quarter of the season unfortunately ended the same as the season started and with only 13 points from the last 30 available the season ended with a league position of 11th place which meant a top half of the table finish, something that hasn't happened since 2005. Ricky Case and Tommy Hull cleaned up with the first team awards, Ricky taking the Players Player award and Top goal scorer with 14 goals. Tommy took home the Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year. Niran Vaughan was awarded the Young Player of the Year trophy. Kennoy stayed on for another crack at the helm in 2012/13 guiding the side to a respectable mid table finish. Some success in both FA cup and Trophy with the season ending with silverware in the shape of the North Beds Charity Cup. Arguably Rovers under the stewardship of Kennoy had its best season for many years in 2013/14. Flirting in the play off places all season before finishing 6th with a last day of the season defeat which saw the side miss out on the play offs by just 3 points. The clubs highest league position in its history was coupled by back to back North Beds Charity Cup success. Following Dan Kennoy’s decision to stand down at the end of the season 2014/15 saw new managers at the helm in the shape of former players Richard Wilmot and Wes Byrne. The season bettered the previous with Wilmot and Byrne achieving a club best of play off finalist beaten by Bedworth Utd 2-0 but the going on to lift the Beds Senior cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Biggleswade Town at Kenilworth Rd. The 2015-16 season yet another a new management team of Matt Endersby and Jon Reed taking the reigns to push the small village outfit to bigger things. Sadly the season was a right off with neither manager staying to the end of the campaign but the club did manage to retain the Beds FA senior cup with a 2-1 win over AFC Dunstable. Former player Jimmy Gray took over in the Sharpenhoe Rd hot season for the promotion chase in 2016/17. Jimmy was assisted by Mark Boyce whist Keith West stayed on as coach. Again its as close as it can be but no cigar as Rovers lose in the play off final in an enthralling match v Farnborough. The two nil loss did not reflect the game but goals are all that matter. Barton regrouped for 2017-18, Mark Boyce moved up to the hot seat for the early part of the season but after a poor run of results was replaced after 16 games by ex Dunstable Town manager and a former Barton player Tony Fontanelle, who is still in charge to this day.
Tony Fontenelle - Manager – Tony is now into his fifth season with Barton Rovers and has steadily improved the squad and league position along the way. Previous clubs: MK Dons, St Neots Town Victor Osobu (ATT) Strong lively forward with a great eye for goal. Bags of pace and energy and loves a challenge. Vic is a real exciting player that has also taken on the mantle of being one of the more senior members of the group to share on his vast knowledge of the game. Previous clubs: Dunstable Town, Chalfont St Peter, Hemel Hempstead Town Connor Vincent (ATT) Connor re-joined Barton Rovers in the 2018/19 season and is a real coup for the club. Connor has been plying his trade in the Southern Prem with local sides Biggleswade Town and Hitchin Town. A strong player with an eye for goal who we know will help us progress up the table. Previous clubs: Biggleswade Town, Hitchin Town Sam King (ATT) Sam joins Barton for the 2021/22 season having previously come through our successful Youth Team.
