MANAGER’S NOTES All the latest news at www.stneotstownfc.co.uk

The Perfect Formula Ian Parr Hello to all from Canvey Island for tonight’s FA Cup replay. A fair result last Saturday of which after watching Canvey the other night against Leiston I thought our game plan was very good. Canvey have an unusual team set up and both Gary and myself felt that we should try and combat that; a 4-2-31 line up is unusual to say the least.

Lack of concentration If it was the penalty taker that followed up that would be expected but another player who we failed to track scored the goal. A lack of concentration on our part. We then had to endure what I call a home side pressing the game of which we coped with very well, taking the lead again in the second half only to concede in the 82nd minute.

Hopefully Searsy and Jordy will both be fit and in the squad tonight, which will be a great addition. Because of programme deadlines I do not know who will be our or Canvey’s opponents in the next round but any one at home would suit both of us. Welcome Gary Welcome to our new Assistant Manager Gary King, of whom I’m very excited about working with him.

We both have different backgrounds but put them together and we have what I think is the perfect formula. Gary and myself had a very long chat last week about both our ambitions and if they matched the ambition of the club. Right Direction Both of us and the club are all singing off the same hymn book as they say, and we look forward to moving the club in the right direction. We have added Leon’s experience to the squad and will soon we hope add a couple more experienced

players to help our very talented young squad. Finding the right blend between experience and youth is not that easy but we know what we need and will try and get the right type of player to the club. On to tonight’s game and I’m sure it will be a very tight game both sides know a little more about each other so it will be a very interesting contest. Lets hope that we can overcome a very good Canvey team and reach the next round of the FA Cup.

Every Chance Still I would have taken a draw before the match and having played them I feel we have learnt enough to give us every chance tonight.

However we went ahead to a good footballing goal only to give away a penalty for handball. I was a little disappointed that after Niall had made a good save by pushing the shot onto the post we allowed them to get the rebound and score.

ACTION REPLAY

04

This week eight years ago FA Vase Second Qualifying Round Replay- 4th October 2005 Witham Town 4

St Neots Town 2

With eleven minutes of this replay remaining St Neots were leading 2-1 but just one minute later they had conceded two goals and were on the way out of the competition. They really had only themselves to blame because they had fought they way back from a one goal deficit to put themselves in a winning position but having gone in front in the second half they opted to sit on their lead rather than going on to capitalise on that advantage. To add to their disappointment they finished the match with only ten men with Nicky Hurst sent off three minutes from time. The first twenty minutes of the match was a continuation of the goalless draw at Rowley Park with very little positive football from either side. With most of the play in midfield neither goalkeeper was tested until 25th minute when Stefan Shamlian had to throw himself to his right to keep out an angled shot by Kevin Budge. That incident seemed to signal a more positive and direct approach by both sides and St Neots were unlucky not to go ahead when Justin Griffiths played Craig Reynolds clear on the left but his cross shot was just wide of the far post with the home keeper beaten. Eight minutes before the break slightly against the run of play a poor clearance by Cameron Clark was picked up by Danny Rowell whose cross was headed home firmly by Kevin Budge who had lost his marker. However within fifty seconds St Neots were level when a Steve Kuhne header from a Russell Lawes free kick was blocked and Craig Reynolds reacted first to drive home his shot for only his second goal for the side. Parity at half time seemed a fair outcome to a disappointing first half but both sides were more pro-active after the break. Gary Bennett should have put

the home side ahead but he wasted his chance when clear and then after 61 minutes St Neots went ahead. It was yet another Lawes free kick that broke the deadlock headed home at the far post in trademark fashion by Steve Kuhne for his twelfth goal of the current campaign. Witham immediately sent on two substitutes and adopted a much more attacking formation and in the next quarter of an hour Shamlian was the busiest man on the field. He did well in a crowded area to punch clear off the head of David Hawes and then tipped an inswinging corner by Bennett over the crossbar. His finest moment came after 79 minutes when he produced an eye catching double save in the same attack to deny both Bennett and Budge but all to no avail for with thirty seconds Gary Bennett produced a stunning volley to give him no chance and level the scores. With St Neots defence still debating whose fault that was Kevin Hawes produced the killer blow with a narrow angled shot past the unsighted Shamlian to put Witham in control. Now St Neots belatedly changed their formation pushing on all three substitutes but to no avail. Desperation was setting in as Nicky Hurst exchanged angry words with an Assistant Referee after being penalised and after consultation the Referee produced a straight red card to reduce St Neots to ten men. At the death a second goal on the evening for Kevin Budge rubbed salt in the wound of the defeat for sad St Neots. St Neots: Shamlian, Hurst, Lawes, Watts, Buckland, Hoggett, Clark (Dellar 81 mins), Reynolds, Kuhne, Griffiths (Walker 80 mins), Brown (Franklin 81 mins). Subs not used: Moule & Fox Goals: Reynolds (38 mins), Kuhne (61 mins).

Calor League Premier Division Rowley Park - The Cozy Stadium (Att 307) Saturday 21st September 2013 - Kick Off 15:00 - Referee Paul Evans (Northampton)

St Neots Town Hurst (38 mins), Safee (73 mins) n Sharman (68) Conroy, Nkinga, Steer, Davies, Crowie, Hoyte, Hilliard, Sear, Hurst, Ann, Adjei Subs: Sharman (for Sear 22 mins), Sembie-Ferris (for Ann 56 mins), Safee (for Hurst 69 mins), Taylor and Wood.

Truro City n Broad (30) n Afful (32) n Cook (45) n White (84) Hands, Moran, Branch, Towers, Pickering, Charlton, Degville-Cross, Ford, Canavan, Dubidat, Bates Subs: Bryan (for Bates 62 mins), Sturgess (for Ford 80 mins), Bevas (for Branch (84 mins), and Downes

A goal in each half and a second clean defensive sheet in a row were the main ingredients of this St Neots victory that lifted them several more places up the league table. ahead of the cup match but Ryan Sharman filled in effectively and with Niall Conroy looking good in goal and Dan Crowie and skipper Gavin Hoyte in solid form at the heart of the defence it was a very satisfactory and deserved victory.

Added to this they missed a penalty so the final score line adequately sums up this match against a spirited visiting Truro side. For the first time this season Manager Iain Parr named an unchanged starting line up but they found positive progress against a stubborn visiting side difficult to achieve in the early stages of the match. However their confidence seems higher after the recent improvement in their results and this bodes well for their FA Cup trip to Canvey Island next week. An injury to inspirational midfield player Adrian Sear could be a worry

Grew in confidence Truro carved out the first chance but Matt Andrews’ downward header to a Cody Cook cross was confidently handled by Conroy. It was twenty minutes before St Neots had a clear chance and then they were unlucky not to score when a powerful Liam Hurst volley hit the goalkeeper on the line with him unable to move. However he made up for that a minute later when he saved well from Lewis Hilliard. The departure of the injured Adrian Sear seemed to halt St Neots forward moves and after an unlucky defensive deflection Les Afful fired well over the bar. However St Neots grew in confidence and Liam Hurst skilfully rounded goalkeeper Ollie Chenoweth but White got back to clear off the goal line. Alasan Ann had few openings but he did bring one important save from Chenoweth but after 38 minutes St Neots went ahead as Liam Hurst took a clever reverse pass from Hilliard and moved inside to beat the keeper at his near post with a low shot. On the

stroke of half time it should have been 2-0 when St Neots were awarded a penalty kick after Cook had handled a corner. Hilliard struck the kick well but the keeper guessed right and pushed a spot kick away. Substitutions Several early second half substitutions by both sides seemed to pep up the pace with Truro striker Liam Eddy proving a thorn in the side of the home defence. Conroy saved well from his rising shot but only five minutes after his introduction St Neots substitute Karl Safee wriggled into the penalty area showing great persistence to collect a Hilliard flick and he forced the ball in to make the score 2-0. Another St Neots, substitute Dion Sembie-Ferris tested Chenoweth but St Neots looked comfortably in control until Matt Andrew his a fine shot from outside the penalty area that rebounded from the junction of bar and post to be scrambled clear twelve minutes from time. Eddy saw his shot deflected across the face of goal as Truro strained to get back in the match but St Neots were to have the last word with Jay Davies moving through the defence to fire just over the bar.

With St Neots winning 2-0 with 10 minutes to go Truro striker Matt Andrew smashed his 25 yard shot against the underside of the bar. Had this gone in then the Saints might have had a very hard last spell of the game.

Both Gavin and Dan had outstanding games. They played as a pair of centre backs and the understanding between them meant that the Truro strikers were in for a very unrewarding day.

It was a great game to watch with St Neots never looked in that much trouble.

However thankfully the shot was cleared and the Saints controlled the rest of the game and came out very comfortable winners.

Both centre backs heading on the day was exceptional, as was their positional play and their tackling. They are forming a very dominant partnership.

It was a shame that Lewis missed the penalty as I think we would have scored more goals. All of the team played well and we are winning games. I like it when we win as it makes everyone happy and they all sing about the Saints.

FA Cup 2nd Round Qualifying Rowley Park - The Prospects Stadium (Att 256) Saturday 28th September 2013 - Kick Off 15:00 - Paul Yates (Maidstone)

St Neots Town Hilliard (4 mins), Safee (73 mins) n n None Conroy, Crowie, Steer, Sharman, Hibbert, Hoyte, Hilliard, Davies, Ann, Hurst, Adjei Subs: Taylor (for Hibbert 64 mins), Safee (for Ann 67 mins), Wood (for Davies 84 mins), Felix and King

St Neots returned from Essex with a draw and a second chance to reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1978/79 when they were beaten at home by March Town. However they will look to be in a slightly more attacking mood in Tuesday’s replay at the Cozy Stadium because despite leading twice in this match they looked the happier of the two teams to be facing a rematch. They were forced into two significant team changes with both Adrian Sear and Jordy Nkinga on the injury list so straight into the side in defence came new signing Leon Hibbert (formerly with Arlesey Town) whilst Ryan Sharman filled the midfield role vacated by Sear. Canvey were a hardworking side who might have beaten St Neots had it not been for an inspired display in goal for the visitors by Niall Conroy and two well taken goals but the home side second goal eight minutes from time sent the tie into a replay. Lively Start St Neots made a lively start scoring after just four minutes as Ed Adjei beat his marker to send a square cross for Lewis Hilliard to last home his third goal of the season from 20 yards. Eight minutes later the scores should have been levelled when a flowing move the length of the field slit the St Neots defence

as Freddie Warren and Harrison Chatting combined to send Sheldon Sellears clear but Niall Conroy pulled off a stunning full length save to keep his goal intact. However after 17 minutes Rene Steer was adjudged to have nudged Simon Thomas off the ball and a penalty was awarded to Canvey. Once again Conroy rose to the occasion to push away the Mike Jones spot kick but Ashley Dumas was first to move to the rebound to level the scores. This incident seemed to inspire Canvey and for much of the remainder of the first half they were in the ascendancy with Conroy producing two more fine saves to deny Sellears and Spencer Bellotti. Dangerous St Neots most notable effort came eight minutes before the break when Alasan Ann collected a Liam Hurst pass to set up Jay Davies but his finish was weak and comfortably saved by home keeper Josh Vickers. St Neots looked most dangerous on the left flank where Ed Adjei received constant rough treatment by his marker but a series of free kicks produced no reward.

Untidy There was an untidy start to the second half with neither side making much headway. When the defender slipped Conroy saved well from Warren and then a free kick from the same player was pushed around a post and from the resultant corner Bryan-Edwards put the ball well wide with a free header. St Neots needed to change things to pep up their efforts so they replaced the tiring Ann with Karl Safee and sent on Bobby-Joe Taylor for the new man Hibbert who was clearly lacking match fitness. Super Sub Safee had been on just three minutes when he got a clever touch to an Adjei volley and St Neots were back in front. Canvey sent on two attacking substitutes and mounted a fierce counter attack and with just eight minutes left they were rewarded when a long ball out of defence by Sellears was brilliantly controlled by Spencer Bellotti as he turned his marking defender to fire home from fifteen yards. That levelled the scores once again and gave the overall match a very fair outcome. Both teams will now attempt to gain benefit from what they learned in this match seek to come out on top in the replay which will be played to a finish.

Edd scoring our second goal. Everyone knew then that we could come home with at least a draw.

Edd played to the instructions of the management team by keeping out wide and attacking his full back.

A long trip to Canvey Island saw us go ahead with a well-taken goal by Lewis Hilliard.

Some very scary last few minutes but we got what we deserved on the day and in the FA Cup a draw away from home is always a great result.

He took some very hard tackles in the course of the game but that did not stop him or put him off his game.

We gave them a very sloppy penalty and were on the back foot for the rest of the first half. The second half was a little more even until we scored our second goal to lead 2-1.

Edd finished off his performance with our second goal of which virtually guaranteed us a replay.

To get a draw in any away cup match is a really good result and I am sure it will be Canvey on the back foot for the replay.

GREENIES GREETINGS

14

Super Sub Mike Green Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, Home of St. Neots Town Football Club.

You have to be in the right place at the right time and the young striker is growing in confidence with every minute he spends on the pitch and obviously, every goal he scores. Tonight we extend a very warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Canvey Island FC and hope you had a good journey up this afternoon and of course, have a safe trip back to Essex later on tonight. Improved Form We’re here tonight due to the lads continuing their improved form of late and of course, returning from Canvey on Saturday with a 2-2 draw and our names still in the hat for the Third Qualifying Round draw and of course the £4500 prize fund for this round. Of course, I’m writing these notes on Sunday morning as this is an extra game and the programme has to be hastily compiled and sent to print, so the result of who either club

could be playing in the next round is not yet known to me. One thing I do know is that our scheduled home game with Biggleswade Town on October 12th has been postponed as The Waders are definitely through to the next round, to be played on that date, after their fine 2-0 win over AFC Chelmsford City on Saturday. Hopefully we will be playing a Cup match that day too, however, I’m sure the Club will try to rearrange another fixture should this not be the case. Tigers Tamed Our last game here saw us defeat Truro City 2-0 a week or so ago in the Calor League Premier Division when Liam Hurst and substitute Karl

Safee scored the important goals. The margin of victory could have been even greater had Lewis tucked away his spot kick however their keeper pulled off a stunning save. Karl it seems is earning himself the tag of ‘Super Sub’ after scoring for the second game running after being introduced to the action, however, I’m not sure how much he knew about his FA Cup goal on Saturday as it was a strike from Ed Adjei which took a wicked deflection off his backside (and not his heel as he claims) and flew into the top of the net to give us the lead at the time. You have to be in the right place at the right time and the young striker is growing in confidence with every minute he spends on the pitch and obviously, every goal he scores. Keep going Karl, you have a big, big future ahead. FA Youth Cup Defeat Sadly, our Under 18’s bowed out of this year’s FA Youth Cup, losing 4-2 after extra time to Cogenhoe United in what was a very entertaining game watched by a healthy crowd. Hard luck lads, you battled very well on the night but injuries and certain decisions went against you but you should be proud of the way you stuck to the task after twice going behind in normal time and managing to take the game into the extra period and the way you played football in the manner which has been synonymous with Steve Pickering’s teams over the past couple of seasons, a credit to the Club. Ok then, on with the action and let’s get behind the boys and cheer them into the next round and hopefully a nice home tie with a Skrill Premier side. PUMP UP THE VOLUME ‘Greenie’

England 3 Hungary 6 #10. GREATEST FOOTBALL MATCHES EVER PLAYED! Voted for by over 1,000 supporters. Each programme we will run from 10 right down to the greatest ever football match played.

Friendly, Wembley, November 25, 1953 The match that changed the game. Hungary arrived in England as Olympic champions and undefeated for three years, prompting the English press to call the friendly “the match of the century”. It was England’s first defeat on home soil by continental opposition, and the emphatic 6-3 scoreline led captain Billy Wright to acknowledge: “We completely underestimated the advances that Hungary had made, and not only tactically. I looked down and noticed that the Hungarians had on these strange, lightweight boots, cut away like slippers under the ankle bone. I turned to big Stan Mortensen and said: ‘We should be all right here, Stan, they haven’t got the proper kit.” England were unprepared for the Hungarian 4-2-4 formation. Nandor Hidegkuti was wearing the No 9 shirt but played in midfield, and his marker, centrehalf Harry Johnston, ended up getting pulled out of position. Hungarian forwards Sandor Kocsis and Ferenc Puskas were continually swapping positions, confusing the English defence and prompting The Times correspondent Geoffrey Green

to describe Wright as “a fire engine heading for the wrong fire”.

Hungarians beat England again, 7-1 in Budapest.

Hidegkuti scored after just 90 seconds. England equalised through Jackie Sewell but Hungary roared back with three more goals before half-time. Mortensen added a second for England before the break but Hungary score twice more in the second half. Alf Ramsey got England’s third, a penalty.

Line-ups

Tom Finney, who watched England’s woe from the Wembley stands, spoke for everyone when he said: “I came away wondering to myself what we had been doing all these years.” Six months later the

A BLAST FROM LE PAST

18

Eric Cantona Full name: Éric Daniel Pierre Cantona
Date of birth: 24/05/1966 Has there ever been a more ‘French’ Frenchman in football than Eric Cantona? He is perhaps one of the most iconic men to have ever played the game – a loose canon on and off the pitch, with his tall frame balanced by finesse, flair and skill the like the English game had never seen before. Ooh Ahh said fans of Cantona and he certainly gave them something to ooh and ahh about. So the Nike advert goes, Eric Daniel Pierre Cantona was born in a big year for English football, 1966. His parents moved from Paris to the south in Marseille, where Eric began to hone his love of the beautiful game. His father was a huge influence on him and pretty soon Eric was attracting the spying eyes of the talent-scouting clubs, who took boys as professionals at only 14. In 1981, when Eric was 15, he joined the Auxerre youth team. There he was spotted by the French national youth team too, but Eric had to do his duty to France in more ways than football back then. The time had come for him to complete his year of national service in the army. Eric completed his stint but kept up the football throughout and went straight to Auxerre upon his return and right into their first team. After a promising period with Auxerre, a bout of illness led to him being dropped before going to Martigues on loan and then in 1988 to Marseille. Eric remained at Marseille until 1991, but during this period he was loaned to a couple of other clubs before finally being taken by Nimes in 1991. The fires of the Frenchman’s belly were starting to bubble up. His temper on the pitch, which had

been a huge part of his rocky eight years in French football, now made him a trouble-maker at Nimes and it was French legend Michel Platini who suggested Eric should move to the more aggressive game over the English Channel. Calais to Dover…to Yorkshire Eric was going to sign for Sheffield Wednesday but it was rival Yorkshire club Leeds United who nabbed the Frenchman. He became a vital part of the Leeds side that won the last ever 1st Division before it became the Premier League in 1991/92. Cantona left the club in Nov 1992 and joined giants of the English game Manchester United for what would become one of the biggest bargains in football – only £1.2 million. The number 7 shirt It’s questionable whether the complete dominance Man Utd had on the English game in the nineties would have been possible had it not been for ooh ahh Cantona. He appeared in 143 games for the Red Devils between 1992-97 with a fine return of 84 goals. He made an explosive start at Old Trafford and, in the first two seasons arriving from

Leeds, Eric helped United win the next two league titles, the FA Cup and picked up the individual reward of 1994 PFA Player of the Year. Not everybody was Kung Fu fighting Fan abuse directed at players is the norm, but Cantona took issue with a certain Matthew Simmons at Crystal Palace. Finally snapping after being sent off, Cantona would deliver the most infamous kick in football, directed at Simmons. Cantona received a year long ban and 120 hours of community-service for assault. United consequently lost the league title to Blackburn that year. Cantona helped United to 6 out of 7 league titles as well as numerous other cup wins. However in 1997 Eric announced his early retirement aged only 30. It came as a surprise to everyone but Eric. He simply felt he had archived enough so he hung up his boots and turned down his collar. Eric remains one of the most talked about and unique players the game has ever seen. He was what the French would call, la pièce de la résistance.

Career Appearances: 335 International Caps: 45 Goals: 151 Career Highlight: Eric Cantona has claimed that his infamous kung fu-style kick on a Crystal Palace fan was the highlight of his career!

A Great Turnaround Mike Kearns Welcome to the officials, players and supporters for tonight’s FA cup replay.

Still a fair result with Canvey having most of the game, as you would expect from the home side. Play to our strengths I think it will be a very different game tonight with us hopefully playing our own game to our strengths. I would like to welcome Gary King to the club as Assistant Manager, I have already mentioned that Gary’s knowledge of clubs and players at this level as well as his managerial expertise will benefit us as a club moving forward. Gary has been instrumental in us signing Leon Hibbert of whom Gary had with him at Arlesey Town last year.

Three wins and a draw from our last four games is a great turnaround from our indifferent start to the season and hopefully we can now push on and make headway in the league. Of course we know we still have to make a few new signings and with each round of the FA cup now every two weeks we will find that clubs who

have gone out of the competition but top loaded their budget at the start of the season to try and have a good cup run will now have to start cutting back and very good players will become available. We have noticed that already and have enquired about a few players that we believe might just become available. Learning as we go along This is how the system works and we are learning more and more about this level as we go along.

Biggleswade at home. Whatever the result tonight our league fixture that day will be postponed because Biggleswade have progressed to the next round with an excellent home win against Chelmsford City, congratulations to Chris Nunn and his team on a very good win. Nerves Right on to tonight’s encounter and I have no doubt that the nerves of all of us supporters will be on edge for the whole ninety minutes.

We hope to have some good news on players by the end of the week with a little bit of luck.

Lets hope that we can progress to the next round.

I can see that the next round of the FA Cup will be in two weeks time when we should have been playing

All for one and one for all. Mike

Welcome Leon Welcome Leon I remember you well from our away game with Arlesey Town last season, where Leon just about had Ollie Thorn in his pocket all day. In fact when I introduced myself to Leon I asked him if Ollie was still in his pocket, Leon smiled and said hang on I will just have a look.

Three wins and a draw from our last four games is a great turnaround from our indifferent start to the season and hopefully we can now push on and make headway in the league.

Our visit to the Prospects Stadium was a very nervous but enjoyable experience. The FA Cup does that to you and I like all of you just want to proceed to the next round. It would be nice to play our usual way of free flowing football but we had a game plan last Saturday to get a result and by and large it worked, having lead twice and with Canvey scoring their second goal on eighty two minutes left us all on tender hooks.

Canvey Island The Gulls That small geographical area of Essex know as Canvey Island supports two senior non-league football clubs – Canvey Island and Concord Rangers. Canvey are members of the Ryman Premier Division at Step Three whilst Concord is one step higher in the Skrill Conference South.

Year Founded: 1926

Chairman: George Frost

Club Website: www.canveyislandfc.com

A special welcome to our visitors this evening for the FA Cup 2nd Round Qualifying replay following the 2-2 draw last weekend. Club History The Club was founded in 1926, but unfortunately most of the early records of the Club were lost in the devastating East Coast floods of 1953. The Club were very successful during their days in the local leagues, winning many cups and league championships in the process. During these years, the club appointed Denis Neville as manager, his first job after leaving his position as the Dutch National Team manager. However, the club had drifted away towards the end of the 1980’s, and the very existence of Canvey Island FC was in serious

doubt. When it looked as though the end was near, local businessman and former Canvey player Jeff King took over as manager, as well as helping to generate funds to take the club forward. Canvey the enjoyed a meteoric rise up the football pyramid, the success starting in 1993 where The Gulls won the Essex Senior League and reached the semi-final of the FA Vase.

in the FA Cup they reached the First Round Proper and drew 2-2 with Football League team Brighton & Hove Albion at Park Lane in front of a then ground record crowd of 3,400. The replay was lost at Brighton in front of a crowd of over 7,000. As well as winning Division Two the team were also winners of the Carlton Trophy and Thamesside Trophy.

The Club then gained promotion to the Isthmian League in 1994 and won promotion from Division Three and Division Two in successive seasons. In 1995/96 after beating Conference team Hednesford Town

The season 1998/99 was yet another exciting one for the supporters as the Club won the Division One championship and the Essex Senior Cup, beating Leyton Orient in the final. Season 1999/2000 was the Club’s first season in the Premier Division of the Ryman League and they finished a very creditable fifth in the League and retained the Essex Senior Cup, defeating Purfleet in the Final. The following season had seen the team win the FA Trophy by beating Forest Green Rovers 1-0 in the final in front of over 10,000 people at Villa Park and thousands more watching live on television. To win the FA Trophy they had to beat four Conference League teams in succession - Stevenage Borough, Telford United, Chester City (over two legs) and Forest Green. In previous rounds Canvey defeated Harlow Town, Northwood and Bilston Town. Earlier in the season the Club had another great FA Cup run and after beating Braintree Town, King’s Lynn

Canvey’s first season in the Conference they finished in 18th position in the League table, achieving their initial aim of consolidation. The season started well with a draw at Carlisle United, in front of a 7,000 crowd, on the opening day and just one defeat in the first seven games, against the eventual champions Barnet. After this the Club lost some key players through injury for several months and struggled in the middle part of the season but came back strongly at the end to seal their status for a second season. The following season saw the club achieve it’s highest ever league position, as they earned a

The 2008/09 season saw The Gulls return to the Ryman Premier League after an absence of 4 years. After being in and around the playoff positions for the majority of the season, Canvey eventually finished in a credible 12th position, completing a memorable double over rivals Billericay Town in the process (4-0 at home, 4-2 away). The following season was a disappointment in comparison, with Canvey in and around the playoffs at Christmas only to fall away and finish 16th come the end of the season, a place which they consolidated the following year. The 2010/11 season was a vast improvement, and a superb second half of the season saw Canvey finish in 6th position, missing out on the playoff places on goal difference. Manager John Batch stood down in January 2012, with the club lying in 10th place in the Ryman Premier League. Then first team coach Glen Alzapiedi took over as manager, with Batch remaining with the club in his role as a Director. In April 2012 The Gulls won the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in a decade with a 1-0 victory against League One side Colchester United at Thurrock FC’s Ship Lane. Alzapiedi left the club in July 2012 and was replaced by former-Canvey captain Steve Tilson, who 5 years previously was managing in the Championship with Southend United. Another managerial change came at the end of the 2012/13 when Tilson and his assistant Craig Davidson were released by the club, with centre forward Danny Heale taking the job - his first managerial role in senior football.

The next season saw Canvey reach the goal they had been working towards for the previous four years, as they won the Ryman Premier League by a margin of nineteen points. Canvey also reached the FA Trophy final and the 1st Round of the FA Cup. The League was clinched at Easter with seven games still to play and the team finally finished with a total of 104 points. The FA Trophy run included wins over Conference teams Farnborough Town and Telford United, in the two-legged semi-final, before losing 3-2 in an exciting final at Villa Park against Hednesford United. After a fine run in the FA Cup the team was narrowly beaten at home 3-2 by Third Division neighbours Southend United, after a 1-1 draw at Roots Hall.

respectable 14th place. However, the lack of success compared to previous seasons had taken its toll on the attendances, so much so that Jeff King made the decision to withdraw his financial and footballing interests from the club. However, the supporters of the club rallied together to allow the team to continue playing the following year in the Ryman League Division 1 North.

Follow the Saints on Facebook /StNeotsTownFC

The Club had enjoyed a then record-breaking season the following year when they reached the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time. On the way they beat five teams including two from the Second Division of the Football League, Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium, and Northampton Town in front of a full house at Park Lane and five million television viewers on ‘Match of the Day Live’. Burnley finally knocked them out in a memorable game at Turf Moor. They finished runnersup in the Ryman Premier League, despite winning thirty games and scoring 108 goals, and in defending the FA Trophy the team had a fine run before narrowly losing away to the eventual winners, Yeovil Town. The team did, however, end the season with silverware when winning the Essex Senior Cup, beating Dagenham & Redbridge in the final.

runners-up in the Ryman Premier League. Although this was another superb performance, finishing thirteen points clear of the third placed club, it was tinged with disappointment as it was the third season running the Club had finished runners-up in their quest to reach the Conference League. Towards the end of the season the Club had a ground record attendance of 3,553 when playing the eventual champions Aldershot Town in a midweek League game. However, the disappointment was a mark of how far the Club had progressed over the last decade, since winning the Essex Senior League.

and Cambridge City they were drawn against Port Vale from the Second Division of the Football League. In an exciting match at Park Lane they drew 4-4 after being 4-2 down with only two minutes left to play. However, even better was to follow as they went to Port Vale and beat them 2-1 after extra time. They were then drawn at home to Football League neighbours Southend United. To accommodate the number of people wishing to see the game, Canvey agreed to transfer the match to Southend’s Roots Hall ground. A capacity crowd of 11,400 people saw the game, with record gate receipts for a game at Southend, and Canvey were narrowly beaten. These tremendous cup runs took their toll in the League. With a large number of matches being postponed on opponents’ grounds because of waterlogged pitches, it meant they had to complete the season with ten league games in fifteen days and consequently dropped points that may have taken them to the league title and a place in the Conference League. However, it was still a fine performance to finish runners-up in their second season in the Premier Division.

Niall Conroy Goalkeeper Niall is a 21 year old goalkeeper who despite his young age has played over 200 games for our local rivals St Ives Town. Niall has impressed in his few performances for the club at the end of last season. The club have every confidence in Niall making the number 1 jersey his own.

Defender

Edd is 21 years old and a versatile left sided player who is comfortable playing at either full back or left midfield, or indeed up front as the second striker. Again a young player under 21 years old Edd has developed into a first class footballer who just loves playing football.

Rene started his football at Arsenal and went on to make one first team appearance before a freak injury playing on loan for Oldham nearly ended his career. Rene first played for St Neots in their Central division championship team but again bad luck hit him again where he was injured in pre season and lost the whole of last season. He is now back in a Saints shirt where he is starting to get back to playing like his old self.

Dan is 19 years old was signed at the beginning of season 2013. Having starting his career at Luton Town his last club was Kettering Town where he was very impressive in the games against us. A very strong centre half Dan, has impressed in pre-season and seems to have made the position his own.

Gavin Hoyte Defender Gavin joined the club just after the start of season 2012-2013. A player of great presence he plays at Centre half and after a settling in period began to dominate his position. Gavin is the second oldest player the squad at only 26 years old. Gavin has been given the role

Theo Davis Defender Theo a 25 year old left back or wide midfielder, who has spent all of the last 18 months recovering from a serious injury. Theo showed just what an outstanding player he is in his come back game last season against Cambridge City. Unfortunately a re-occurrence of the same injury has sidelined him again.

Lewis Hilliard Midfielder 22 year old Lewis started his career with the Rushden and Diamonds, he then spent some time with Hemel Hempstead before joining

St Neots Town. Lewis is now in his fourth season with the Saints having won two championships and numerous cups with the club. A two footed player who can play any midfield position, a free-kick specialist who can score goals from anywhere on the pitch.

Jay Davies Midfielder Jay 21 has previously played for Peterborough United and Woking of whom we paid a transfer fee for his services in September 2012. A dynamic midfield playmaker Jay is only 21 years old but a maturity to see a pass way above his young age.

Liam Hurst Midfielder Liam signed a contract with Cambridge United just last season where he made a single first team appearance. He was on loan in the earlier part of the season with Corby Town but called back to United so as he could be loaned out to the Saints. A tenacious midfield player who likes to get forward and score goals. Liam is thought of very highly at Cambridge United and indeed at St Neots Town.

Ryan Sharman Midfielder Ryan a midfield utility player who is very comfortable on the ball has come through the youth teams being captain of the u18s for most of last season before breaking into the first team squad over the last part of last season. Ryan still only 18 years old has shown maturity way beyond his young age.

Midfielder Adrian Is 28 years old and joined the club from Burnham at the beginning of the 2011-2012 where he won a championship medal as well as the Hinchinbrooke cup. He left the club for a couple of months in season 2012-2013 to try his luck at a higher level where he was quite outstanding, however because of budget restraints he returned to the Saints and slotted back into his old routine of giving it everything he had

Striker

Leon Hibbert

Kieran has joined the club from Kettering Town. He is a very quick lively forward who will cause defences many problems.

Midfielder Leon has played for amongst others Lincoln City, Corby Town and Arlesey Town where he played last season. A very experienced midfield player who can also play centre half. When at Lincoln City they quoted, “Lets not get carried away but think of Patrick Vierra and you are picturing this real handful of a player”.

Dion Sembie-Ferris Striker Dion is one of our young guns, only 17 years old. A striker with a very good turn of pace and good goalscoring record for our U18s last season. MANAGING DIRECTOR’S VIEWS

34

Jumpers For Goalposts Lee Kearns I never thought I’d write about the FA Cup and have a vested interest in it, all very strange and slightly surreal to be honest. My first memory of the FA cup was Arsenal V Ipswich Town in 1978 with Roger Osborne scoring the winner. I’m not sure why this is the first one I remember, who knows, but it started a tradition in the Kearns family household that can be loosely described as “The FA Cup Final Day”! It was never a case of sitting down at 2.30pm to watch the game, no no, it was much more like waiting with baited breath for the Beeb to start the match day build up (always preferred the Beeb over ITV because of the adverts). A Visit to the players Hotel was followed by a comedy slot or a look back at previous finals or interviews with FA cup medal holders who had at some stage played and won on the hallowed turf. Cup Memories Whether it was the Brady cross met by a shaggy haired Alan Sunderland or Terry Fenwick meeting Bob Hazels flick on to force a reply, it was all about the day. Breakfast was followed by a Crusty bread sandwich which in turn was followed after the match by me and Jamie emulating what we had just witnessed, believing that one day we would be part of the history of the FA Cup. My abiding memory of those late 70’s early 80’s finals was Willie Young tripping Martin Allen (I think and who at the time I believe was the youngest to play in an FA Cup final), Tommy Hutchinson scoring at both ends, Ricky Villa tip toeing through a confused defence, Tony Currie tripping someone (can’t remember who) to let Spurs win etc etc. It all seems an eternity ago but at the same time for me to remember it, it must have been something special, something that sticks and doesn’t leave the mind regardless of how many years have passed. I can’t wait

I can’t wait for my son to reach an age where he can share the same experience although I do have to say that the “FA Cup Final Day” doesn’t quite seem to be as romantic and intoxicating for kids today as it did for me 35 years ago. for my son to reach an age where he can share the same experience although I do have to say that the “FA Cup Final Day” doesn’t quite seem to be as romantic and intoxicating for kids today as it did for me 35 years ago. Maybe it’s because of Xbox’s or Play Station’s or any number of other distractions that fill young minds with worthless tosh. It’s sad that today’s kids are not left to occupy their own minds and instead need something to do it for them. Halleluiah for the apprenticeship programme and for our partners St Neots Town Youth & Saints both being a real slice of magic and opportunity.

I’d like to say a big welcome to Gary and Ben and I look forward to working with you both. I feel that we are getting somewhere, both on the pitch and off the pitch. We have achieved so much in such a short space of time but we still have a long way to go. And so onto today’s game, let’s hope for a win and a good draw for the next round. I may have to dig out the old footie boots and see if my brother wants to have a kick around after the game, now there’s an idea!!!! Lee

THE NLP

Now I wasn’t at the Ryman South game so it’s impossible to say what did or didn’t happen. The referee and his officials must have seen, or thought they’d seen, something. Whatever, it might not be the wisest thing to brag about on a public forum and Baker has called for retrospective action. These incidents can often be game changing, be it a penalty or a red card. In some cases they are life changing.

I don’t know, those big bad foreigners eh? And of course the disease has now spread from the continent to these shores. Britain, the last bastion of fair play in football, has been infiltrated at the highest level. Just see the furore over Ashley Young’s theatrics this season and the promise from manager David Moyes to have a word. Last year it was Gareth Bale under the spotlight as former players and pundits queue up to register their disgust and blame the influx of overseas players. In reality, players have been ‘winning’ free-kicks and penalties here for years. Francis Lee, the former Manchester City striker, was a genius when it came to tricking the ref. A little tap on the back of his heel and down he’d go.

Search for diving videos on YouTube and you’ll see Lee accusing George Best of going down easily in pure pantomime gold by swan diving onto the pitch as he explained his version of events while Best received treatment. And there’s a great video online from The Big Match where QPR’s Dave Clement goes sprawling to win a penalty against Middlesbrough. We like to get outraged by it in the modern day game, but it has always happened. But what is diving? Where is the line if there is one at all? And is there a difference between out and out tripping over thin air and going down as soon as you’re touched by an opponent. The Laws of the Game say a referee must be 100 per cent certain no contact has been made. Does that mean that if a player feels the slightest touch and they go down, that’s fair game? Or is it an art?

In The NLP this summer we had four managers sat around a table for a feature where they chewed the football fat. In it Liam Watson admitted he’d taught Shaun Whalley how to slam on the brakes in the box and cause a defender to plough straight into the back of him. He says that’s not cheating and I don’t disagree. It’s part of the game. It always has been and no doubt always will be. Just don’t brag about it on the internet.

No player, manager or fan likes their team to be on the wrong end of an opponent conning a referee into something that wasn’t. So it’s easy to understand why Walton & Hersham manager Steve Baker was so annoyed when he saw Worthing striker Freddie Barker boasting to a mate about his alleged indiscretion on social network site twitter. An offthe-ball incident led to a penalty and a red card for Walton’s Ismail Thomas.

Many of us remember watching Croatia’s Slaven Billic fall down clutching his face leading to Laurent Blanc being shown a red card and thus denied the chance to play in a World Cup final in his home country at France 98.

DIVING, simulation, feigning, cheating – whatever you want to call it, there’s little doubt it makes the blood boil.
